Album Description

"The Music of Candyman" CD is the original music scores written by Philip Glass and produced by his production company, Euphorbia Productions for the films "Candyman" and its sequel "Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh". Subsequent to the first "Candyman" film release, Philip Glass' fans have been requesting access to these recordings. At this time Orange Mountain Music, Philip Glass' new record company, is very happy to make these recordings available. Newly re-mixed to facilitate home stereo playback from the original masters by Don Christensen, this CD will be an important addition to any serious Glass fan's collection as well as a stimulating record for all listeners. The "Candyman" films started out as "The Forbidden", a short story written by the acclaimed horror/fantasy author Clive Barker. It is the story of a graduate student's investigation into a grisly urban legend with distinct racial and social undertones. Director Bernard Rose's ("Paperhouse", "Immortal Beloved") adaptation has given the narrative an underlying intelligence and believability. Unlike most horror films "Candyman" is low on special-effects but still delivers hair raising suspense and surprising shocks, primarily with its creative imagery. Bernard Rose's innovative and realistic direction, the excellent cast (Virginia Madsen as Helen the graduate student and Tony Todd as Candyman) and the Cabrini Green location (a notorious Chicago housing project) made this film an original in its genre. Written for piano, pipe organ and chorus, Philip Glass's score is perfectly suited for this modern gothic tale. Using some of his well established techniques of rhythmic intensity and switching between major and minor key harmonies, Glass's score is as trance inducing and terrifyingly seductive as Candyman himself.

Album Description

In 1990 Philip Glass was approached to compose a score for the psychological horror film 'Candyman' and he provided additional cues for the sequel that followed. Since the release of these films, there has been much demand for a soundtrack album that until now has only been satisfied by bootlegs and cover albums. 2001.

4 out of 5 stars Scary horror music at its finest.......2006-10-29

I saw the film "Candyman" several years ago and, being originally from Chicago, the film resonated with me more than if had been filmed in a different city. However, what stuck in my head for a very long time was Philip Glass' surreal, creepy musical score. When I learned there was a CD with the entire score years later I knew I had to have it.

The album actually draws from both the original "Candyman" film and its sequel "Candyman II: Farewell to the Flesh" (which I have not seen) and while there is some carryover musically there are really two separate musical suites on this CD. The first seven tracks are derived from the first film and center on a haunting melody that is the leitmotif for the film's protagonist, Helen Lyle. The tune is first heard most simply in "Music Box", before changing to a piano solo in "Helen's Theme" and finally culminating in the crescendo of a breathtaking choir with resonating basses and soaring sopranos. The remaining tracks build on the sense of horror in the film, particularly the staccato section of high notes in "Return to Cabrini."

The second half of the CD (tracks 8-13) begin with a brief reiteration of Helen's theme before changing over to Annie's theme, a beautiful melody sung by an anonymous artist. Whereas the first film made heavy use of piano in the score, the sequel replaces it with a magnificent pipe organ. "Annie's Theme" finds its own culmination with choir and organ in "The Demise of Candyman" which soars to unexpected heights.

While you might not listen to this CD every day, it is well written and arranged, and is perfect to enjoy as scary "mood music."

5 out of 5 stars Darkest Horror Soundtrack.......2006-09-30

Setting aside any other bad reviews this soundtrack got, the music that Philip Glass produced here is very authentic... I have not heard very many horror movies that actually have such a flawless music score besides Clive Barker's "Hellraiser" Parts 1 and 2. This soundtrack sets a morbid mood and can actually bring down a bright sunny day. For those who know how to appreciate something outside the box of the usual cliche, this is a must have for the dark-minded.

2 out of 5 stars There is a reason this music doesn't sound as good..........2006-07-22

It's evident from the very first notes that this is a re-recording, and not a very good one at that. If you absolutely must have this music in some form, get this CD. To be honest, you'd be better off just playing the tracks from the DVD.

1 out of 5 stars Geez, I don't remember the movie music being this bad!.......2006-06-06

Now I admit that I've never heard any other Philip Glass music prior to obtaining this CD. However, I was hooked on the "Candyman theme" song (actually titled "It Was Always You, Helen", track 6) from the first movie, so I figured there would probably be additional good tracks on the CD. Ok, made me look! To paraphrase Dr. Phil, I was "stupified" as to how awful this CD is, other than track 6 and a not-too-bad track 10 (Annie's Theme). Repetitious organ melodies and unrelenting, overbearing choral vocals (drowning out most of the music) comprise most of these songs. Maybe it can be blamed on the producer for a bad mix, I don't know. What I do know is, after getting about halfway through this CD while listening to it in my car, I was looking into my rearview mirror saying "Candyman, Candyman, Candyman", hoping he'd show up in my backseat and relieve me from listening any further. Sorry, but other than the "Helen" track so memorable from the first movie, this CD is probably just for hardcore Glass fans.

5 out of 5 stars Candyman, Candyman, Candyman, Candyman......can't do it........2005-03-02

Quite possibly the best horror soundtrack to the greatest slasher movie of all time. Candyman is one of my all time favorite movies you see, and the soundtrack is one of the main reasons why. It is truly one of a kind. Pick it up. Now.

5 out of 5 stars My FAVORITE of Many Relaxation CDs!.......2006-01-26

There is absolutely no vocals on this beautiful harp music CD, although if you don't like the sound of rain or a bit of nature behind some of the music, you may not agree with my admiration of this particular album. I LOVE IT! I have bought numerous "Soothing" music CDs that either throw in unappealing vocals that interrupt the flowing instrumentals or else inject a random fast-paced, spiced up, thundering piece that makes you jump right out of your skin! Not so here, that's why I LOVE IT!
Just a nice "Soothing" CD & I wish I could find more like it.

4 out of 5 stars "One clear harp in diverse tones".......2003-04-12

The Floridian harpist, Victoria Lynn Schultz has three solo albums to her credit: "Harp Dreams;" "Harp Favorites;" and the 2000 album "Soothing Harp" which was originally marketed with aromatherapy products for "Treatment of the Mind, Body & Spirit."

The latter album features four of her own compositions: 'Tender Wishes;' 'Mystic Waters;' 'Reminiscent;' and 'Whisper Dreams.' There are also traditional favorites such as 'Greensleeves' and 'Scarborough Fair,' and a couple of dance tunes from the Renaissance. Close your eyes and let your thoughts resonate to the clear, beautifully-played strings of Schultz's harp and you'll be soothed without the need for essential oils, scented candles, or any of that other New Age clutter.

This harpist also had a chance to tour with the traditional Irish band, The Chieftains when their group's longtime harpist Derek Bell died suddenly last October. Schultz joined them for their "Down the Old Plank Road: The Nashville Sessions" tour. Since she had been a Chieftains fan and a Celtic music buff for years, it was the opportunity of a lifetime.

She has also written the book, "You Can Play the Harp."

Speaking of New Age clutter, my only problem with this album is the inclusion of occasional water sounds that seem less like rain than like someone left a faucet running in the recording studio. There are also occasional bird songs, but these are minor distractions in what is essentially an album of harp music for meditation and relaxation.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Don't ask me how I know.......2006-12-05

Readers:
Before commenting upon this music CD, the following information is helpful.

One morning in 1980 some vans arrived at the California home of Bronislaw Kaper. Out of them emerged Gene DiNovi -composer, arranger, jazz pianist -plus his film crew. Gene had arrived to spend the day with Bronislaw, to interview him about his musical career, to learn the story of incredible tunes like On Green Dolphin Street and Invitation, and to listen to him play some of his own compositions on the living room piano.

Bronislaw Kaper played his creations in a "minimalist" style; after all, he was a composer and studio orchestra conductor, not a Performer. All the while, film cameras were rolling and recording this charming, witty, under-rated musical genius. The end result, after editing and in-cutting was a one-hour documentary film sans commercials. It became part of a public television series hosted by Gene DiNovi, called The Music Room.

A best guess is that The Music Room series was not broadcast in the USA. The series was produced in Ontario and shown across Canada. To date, those people storing the archival film have not made the series available to the public on DVD nor any other medium. It is an absolute crime that this critical musicology remains hidden from YOUR EYES and from students of music. We, who love music and repect those who create it, should complain our heads off to the proper sources in Toronto.

Until the said documentary is made public, this music CD is the only record we have of Bronislaw Kaper playing his own compositions.

It is more of a historical treasure than a CD for ordinary enjoyment of music. The music of Bronislaw Kaper is best heard as performed by the likes of Miles Davis, Michael Feinstein, Wynton Marsalis, Marian McPartland, George Shearing and countless others.

But, we owe the man his Propers.

I sit at the window and watch the rain,
Hi Lili, hi Lili, hi lo.
Tomorrow I'll probably love again,
- - - - - Hi Lili, hi Lili, hi low.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyably 'Inauthentic,' Authentically 1950s Version.......2005-05-14

By rights, this 1955 version of John Gay's much-adapted 1728 'ballad opera' should sound antiquated beyond redemption: the musical version used is Frederick Austin's well-worn, prettified (& verbally expurgated) 1920 arrangement, subjected to the indignity of being blown up from chamber ensemble to full orchestra; Sir Malcolm Sargeant's tempi are impossibly 'inauthentic' (ie. slow); there are numerous cuts even beyond Austin's omissions; & the 2 separate casts, of opera singers & actors, recorded in different months, are not always convincingly 'matched up.' Yet it's one of the most enjoyable recordings I know of.
A quick scan of the cast list(s) will tell you why: the singers include Elsie Morison, John Cameron, Monica Sinclair, Ian Wallace, Owen Brannigan & Alexander Young & the actors Zena Walker, John Neville, Rachel Roberts, Eric Porter & Paul Rogers. In other words, these are top pros & strong audio personalities who grab their every opportunity. The musical performance is sumptuous & sheer pleasure to listen to, the actors & dialogue 'production' brisk, funny & sharper than you might expect. And the sound for both music & dialogue is of demonstration quality, one of the best of the period.
Those who find this version too musically ponderous or dramatically reactionary can find antidotes in the Bare Baroque Basics one by Jeremy Barlow & The Broadside Band (Hyperion), word & note complete, & the radical & often inspired 1948 Benjamin Britten arrangement (complete on Argo, abridged with the original cast on Pearl). They'll be missing some good 50s fun, though.
They'll also be missing the only available excerpts (15 numbers) from Edward German's tuneful 1907 operetta 'Tom Jones.' This really IS 'cleaned up' 18th century, genteel beyond the call of duty, but for those who respond to musical theater of the period, highly recommended. The 1966 recording is lively & accomplished. As Miss Jean Brodie would say, For those who like that sort of thing, that is the sort of thing they like. And a good thing too.

5 out of 5 stars One of my most-played CDs.......2005-10-13

This is one of my most frequently played CDs. I find it perfect background music for meditation, prayer, reading and other tasks, as well as a good CD that doesn't disturb people at work.

This is not intended to be organised as a church service or a concert performance per se, but rather, as the co-producer Carol Rosenberger states, 'this album is meant to recreate an experience many of us have treasured: slipping inside the doors of a cathedral and finding oneself alone in a vast, quiet space with light streaming through stained glass windows. The organist begins to play gentle music, and one is lost in contemplation...'

As a churchy person, I've often had the experience of working or sitting in an empty church while the organists or their students practiced. This recording in many ways reminds me of that experience. Of course, our organ is a far cry from the pipe organ in Atlanta's Cathedral of St. Philip, with over 5000 pipes (and our church does not have a 5-second delay reverberation, either), 4 manuals and 96 ranks. This Aeolian-Skinner organ is a genuinely stunning instrument, but as with any instrument, it takes the right performer to bring out the fullness of the sound from it.

Todd Wilson is just such a performer. His playing is solid and well-suited for this task, with occasional flashes of brilliance. Mozart's 'Adagio', Bach's 'Jesu, Joy of Many's Desiring', and Barber's 'Adadio for Strings' (here arranged for the organ) are truly wonderful pieces. The programme here is a diverse collection of pieces from Baroque, Renaissance, and later pieces, including folk tunes and a few modern compositions. Todd Wilson is a church organist and music director at Church of the Covenant in Cleveland, Ohio (a city with not insignificant music resources and life), and is also head of the Organ Department at the Cleveland Institute of Music. He has had an international performance and recording career.

I applaud the decision to make this a double-disc set - the producer writes that there was just too much good music to limit the selection. Thus, there is a method to the organisation, given the availability of two discs. The first disc has more simple pieces, easily recognisable melodies and well-known hymn/sacred pieces. The second disc has a bit more complexity of music.

There is a booklet that is particularly designed for young people, so that they may become more familiar with the organ as an instrument, and this type of music.

This is a truly wonderful recording.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best sets of organ works.......2005-02-20

This is a superb set of organ works. Strongly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars Mystic!.......2003-12-28

The Æolian-Skinner organ in St.Philip's Cathedral, Atlanta is the finest example on Earth of eclectic organ...and the last- really-marvellous instrument erected by this firm. Flutes and Erzählers speak directly from Heaven...and the organ, despite electric, seems to have tracker action! Listen to Bach's BWV 731 and 648: they sound like played on a Silbermann instrument!
Todd Wilson is a delicate musician, a poet of the organ and a genius in the choice of the stops.
Buy also the other recordings of this Æolian-Skinner by Robert Delcamp (Naxos) and Alan Morrison (Gothic)...and don't forget that Michael Murray recorded in St.Philip's Cathedral for Telarc the finest rendition of Poulenc's "Concerto in sol minore per organo, archi e timpani" under the direction of the late Robert Shaw.

5 out of 5 stars By All Means Get This CD.......2003-09-06

I found this wonderfully relaxing CD above and beyond my expectations. Do you enjoy organ music, then listen and explore the sacred music of J.S. Bach. This music will relax you: keep your muscles relaxed as you work on a time deadline for a large project, or doing some casual items around the house.

5 out of 5 stars To be fair..........2003-04-04

The hiss that one reviewer refers to is undoubtedly the organ's wind supply. The wind can be heard on most organ recordings.

5 out of 5 stars These guys are the best!.......2006-10-02

These guys are going to be big soon. They have a new sound that is going to take over the music world. Although they are talented, they are also very humble. I met them after a show they did on their fall tour. They are very sweet and don't let their 'fame' go to their heads. Buy this CD and see what I'm talking about. My favorite songs are tracks 1,2,6,7, and 8. But they are all good.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad at all........2006-02-27

I first stumbled across These Green Eyes unintentionally on Limewire about a year ago. After hearing Why Hawaii (the Demo version) I began to follow their progress until they released House of Glass.

Anyway, onto the album. A more accurate rating would be three and a half stars, House of Glass isn't quite worth four stars but it's certainly better than a three star album. Most of the songs on the album sound a little like weak Post Hardcore. If you're unsure as to whether to get their album or not you could always download their songs from Limewire (their entire album isn't available but some of their better tracks can be found there).

Tracks that stand out: Self Inflicted, Crimson, Why Hawaii are the best tracks on the album, followed by Watch The Lights Go Out, Stay Awake and Bouquet.

4 out of 5 stars If you want differnt then you want this CD!.......2005-11-11

I have seen this band live and let me tell you AMAZING!! put on a great show. The music is very different from stuff around here or even on the radio. Originality...the only downside is after seeing them live then hearing the CD. You wish to hear the music live. Not bad recording just one of those things where live is better..But again it could JUST BE ME!
BUT the music is still good, the singer has a unique voice and performance style. Again different stuff...but a good different. Check it out! They are very down to earth too, if you go to a show you most likley will catch them walking around before and after so before they become to big I suggest you catch up with them! Just a little tid bit.
