not really kansas, but an incredible simulation.......2007-07-10
This album was a bit different than any of their other releases. This is the second album they put out after the original line up went their separate ways.
I had this for a long time on cassette and wasn't really surprised that a CD didn't come out for a long time. It eventually did of course and I snagged this up right away, along with Vinyl Confessions.
This album is not their best. However, as with all terrible albums, there are still a few good songs here. Fight Fire With Fire is hard rocking, and its still played in shows to this day, I believe.
Everybody's My Friend is pretty lame with equally bad lyrics. Mainstream is one of the better songs here and has a great middle section. Andi is my vote for the WORST KANSAS SONG EVER!!
Going Through the Motions is a nice idea lyrically and this song isn't too bad really. Get Rich is an obvious and blatant attempt at writing a song like Song For America or No One Together and falls flat on its face in the process.
Don't Take your Love Away is a power ballad that is almost laughable. End of the Age is another one of the good songs, both musically and lyrically. Ironically enough, all the good songs here were penned by Livgren.
Incident on a Bridge is a decent song too and a good way to end this album.
So we have 9 songs here. 5 are in the OK/good range, 3 of them are terrible and 1 is the worst song these guys ever did. Do you like those odds? This is for the hardcore fan only, or for those of you who want to take a bet than you'll like part of this. 3 stars for this one.
Kansas - John Elefante Takes Over.......2007-06-27
"Drastic Measures" had the unique distinction to be the first Kansas album without a violin. Founding member Robbie Steinhardt left (or was fired) prior to this album and the band moved on as a 5 piece unit. In the end the album would be the last from the John Elefante era of the band. Kansas would basically cease to exist for more than a decade after this album and tour. John Elefante (and his songwriting partner, brother Dino) really comes to the fore on this disc writing the lion's share of the material. Many of the songs deal with the impact of sudden fame. Kerry Livgren only contributes three songs all in the with mainly Christian oriented lyrics. The single "Fight Fire With Fire" was a great rocker and managed to get both radio and MTV airplay. I also like "Everybody's My Friend", and "Mainstream" the longest track on the disc. The rest is all pleasant enough, but does not come close to what the band had previosly achieved. Overall for Kansas fans it is worth owning, but if you are a more casual fan there are many other albums that I would purchase prior to this one.
Outstanding ... shoot... I guess... Progressive pop?.......2007-06-06
This is one of the few albums I repurchased on CD long after I owned it on tape. Since the Essential Kansas box set ignores this album completely, this is a MUST BUY in the same Amazon cart with that collection. If only for the first three songs.
The catchiness on this one is up there for a band like Kansas. That is why I want to call it "Progressive Pop" which is hardly an insult. The first five songs are amazing.
If you are fan of Hold Your Fire era Rush you will IMO enjoy this.
Do not let this get away........2007-03-29
I want go on and on I just want anyone debating to buy this CD to buy this underrated and worthy disc. Every song is memorable and infectious and what more can you ask for in a CD.
Weak attempt........2006-10-12
I think that Shawn Sutherlands review is most accurate. This is NOT by any stretch a KANSAS album. Being a avid Kansas fan since the beginning I was reluctant to purchase this last CD because I knew/felt that it is what it is, mostly a John Elefante solo production. I did pick it up to complete my Kansas CD collection. After hearing it I realized that I could have done without it. Even with the earlier release of Vinyl Confessions, the Elefante Brothers had changed the sound of what was Kansas. This cd took the sound even further from what was the signature prog rock sound one of the most instrumentally minded rock bands today. So much was missing from this production. Robbie Steinhardt's presence is obviously missing...no stinging violin...means no Kansas..!! Kerry Livgrens lyrical input was minimal, only contributing three tracks. Quite a change from the norm when he was the primary song writer along with Steve Walsh. One reviewer stated that he could not tell the difference between Steve Walsh and John Elefante. I would suggest that this person listen very carefully to the ealier albums...MASQUE, IN THE SPIRIT OF THINGS, POINT OF KNOW RETURN and of course LEFTOVERTURE. Steve Walsh IS the Voice of Kansas. What has John Elefante done outside of Kansas...i'm not sure but I do not think that KANSAS......will be his legacy. Go for the earlier albums...!!!

Mostly Magic.......2004-04-26
This album is an interesting combination of Michael Manring's own compositions and some interesting covers (Sting - Spirits in the Material World, Jimi Hendrix - Purple Haze, and Chick Corea - 500 Miles High). Almost everything is 'Soft Jazz.' Sometimes a bit too soft - sometimes the album slips away from you and suddenly it's several cuts later.
Still, it is very much the sort of thing I like. Peaceful, for the most part, with some very interesting displays of technique (see Purple Haze). Keep in mind when you are listening that there are not other guitars other than the basses. Paul McCandless does a superb job on several solos, especially his oboe on Oyasumi Nasai and the sax solo on Deja Voodoo.
Manring allows his bass playing to take a larger part than he does on many of his albums, but keeps it from dominating the music, which makes for a good balance. I find that the more you listen to the album, the more you find in it, and the more you like it.
Awesome Bass Album.......2003-10-25
this has got to be one of my most favorite albums, in the early 90's i actually bought 2 casette copies of it, one i wanted to preserve and the the other i played till the player bled.
Michael Manring, is one of players who are able to mesh in awesome technique with out compromising the soul of a song, this album speaks to your emotion yet will baffle you with how much technical skill is used.
kudos Mike.

Why isn't the classical saxophone quartet more exposed?.......2007-03-16
It blows me away how classical saxophone quartet music is listened to as little as it is. On this album, the Transcontinental Saxophone Quartet really puts forth a recording of some great pieces in the saxophone repertoire. Their ensemble musicianship is quite good and very well rehearsed. This album is simply a great recording for anyone looking to get some saxophone quartet into thier music library.
The first piece is Mountain Roads by big name wind composer David Maslanka. The piece is a series of movements of reworkings of Bach chorales. The piece is absolutely wonderful. The melodies float and soar and are full of American nostalgia. Maslanka's reworkings are absolutely gorgeous and the quartet just exhibits fantastic technical skill and musicianship in the ensemble. The lyrical melodies and rich harmonies are just absolutely magical. The compositional skill of Maslanka and the quartet's fabulous execution are both very evident from the beauty of the recording of this wonderful work that accounts for about half of the album.
The next piece on the album is David Frederick Stock's "Sax Appeal." While this piece is more grounded in pop music and American influence, the quartet still does a fabulous job to make this piece work. The second movement, "Blues" is a little cheesy but the third movement "Sarabande" has both some very beautiful and exciting moments in it. The last movement is absolutely jarring. The piece ends with a fury of notes and creative harmonies. While this piece is not as strong as the title cut, it still makes a fine addition on this great recording.
Finally, the disc closes with Russell Peck's "Drastic Measures." The piece opens with a slow, haunting melody that leads into a beautiful floating exposed wash of sound. The harmonic colors in this piece are absolutely gorgeous. The piece builds marvelously. However, feel like the first movement builds too quickly and would really like to hear more of the material that we got right at the beginning. It also trails of at the end a little bit too long but the haunting chord that we hear at the end is absolutely wonderful. The second and final movement of the piece is quite spritely and fun. We hear some slap tounging and great fast motion. However, there is some blues influence which seems all too cliche in a saxophone quartet. The excitement in the Allegro movement is just infectious though. Once again, the blend and the musicality in the ensemble is just fantastic.
I really love the sound of the orchestration in a saxophone quartet. I wish it more exposed in the classical music world. Unfortunately, it seems that there is too much cliche jazz influence in the repertoire. The title piece on this recording is the corner stone of the album. The other two pieces are fine, but nothing to write home about. The recording is worth the Maslanka piece, and if it wasn't on here, I wouldn't have bought it.
A beautiful new piece by Maslanka.......2001-05-15
This is a beautiful cd starting out with a new quartet by David Maslanka and is the six-movement Mountain Roads the cd is named after. The movements are based on Maslanka's study of Bach chorales, and he includes two chorale melodies around which the piece revolve. This piece was commissioned by the Transcontinental Saxophone Quartet, who also premiered it.
The second piece, Sax Appeal, was commissioned by the Amherst Saxophone quartet. It is a lively four movement piece inspired by the jazz idiom.
Russell Peck's Drastic Measures is based upon a three-note figure at the beginning of the piece. It later goes on to include elements such as slap-tonguing.
Overall, the performance of the Transcontinental Saxophone Quartet is very excellent--they blend well together and this is a wonderful cd and a great addition to any collection.

Overall, a good cd.......1999-08-02
This is a pretty good cd with a wide variety of music. The "Goldrush Suite" is fun to listen to, as is the Phil Woods excerpt. "American Sketches" is played fine, and is written to represent the ethnic background of each of the players. The whole composition of the piece could use a little more sparkle, but the players do it justice. Overall, a good cd, well played, though not outstanding.
