Archetypical English Art Songs.......2006-09-19

'Songs by Roger Quilter', with its oh so appropriate William Morris patterned jacket art is, on the surface, exactly what you expect from the English art song. And, one's first reaction is 'Pretty, but not great'. But, then it starts to grow on you.

One of the biggest surprises is the fact that some of the least interesting pieces are based on Shakespeare's verses. And, some of the best are from poems translated from German into English.

Then, you get to the traditional 'Barbara Allen' and you start to appreciate the debt chamber music can owe to traditional folk tunes. And, you can appreciate from the similarities, the greatness of Stephen Foster, who did almost exactly the same kind of material as Quilter.

One can only wonder if Schubert's Lieder sound like these works to a native German. I think not. Schubert is still more 'beautiful', but Quilter is not a bad way to wile away an hour every once in a while.

Unexpected pleasure.......2005-04-01

This is an intersting recital of songs, not all of them first-rate, but I find I go back to it again and again. Martineau is a sensitive, intelligent accompanist. John Mark Ainsley treats each song, and his audience, with repsect. At no stage do you get the idea the singer is more important than the songs. The disc is worth it just for "Damask Roses" and "Brown is My Love" (slightly less than two and a half minutes between them)

John Mark Ainsley has an exceptional voice: warm, rich, and robust but without the ringing quality of Ian Bostridge's. The songs on the CD are all wonderful, especially "Come away, death." I definitely recommend the album.

"Visions and Dreams" is the long awaited follow up to "Progressive World". Autumns Child once again blends the native American flute with colorful instrumentation including: harp, cello, piano, guitar, percussion and more! The first half of the album was written with the "global chamber" sound they have made popular and are so well known for. Sensuous melodies balanced with world music grooves. These arrangements are beautifully orchestrated and well crafted, using the particular instruments with specific purpose and intent that enhances and enriches the compositions. Music that is accessible and appeals to a variety of ages and all walks of life. The last half features a more jazzy influence with pieces like "Open Sky" and the beautiful arrangement of "Be Thou My Vision" to the reggae-ish groove, "Patchouli Breeze". This recording has amazed listeners at how these wood flutes can play so many different styles of music... and all on one cd! The 3 interludes offer abbreviated sonic markers with the native flute and a String Orchestra from Prague Czech Republic, licensed from an upcoming PBS documentary entitled, "Redemption Road". The opening 2 compositions are almost considered one... with "Painting A Dream" played in a dreamy, lyrical style followed by "Avenue Of The Villa", a bit more up tempo with tabla driving the piece. "Midnight Rain" is an absolutely beautiful melodious piece with flute and cello weaving light in the darkness with incidental french horn lines adding to the mix with piano. "Sketches Of Autumn" is sort of a bouncy shuffle that drifts into a lovely arrangement of Neil Youngs "After The Goldrush"arranged for native flute, cello and guitar. Also worthy of note for this recording is the use of the bamboo bansuri on "An Angels Whisper In A Bamboo Garden" as well as "Sunlit Waterfall". "...Bamboo Garden" is one of the most meditative, hypnotic pieces on the album. (hint: listen deep into the cd for an improvisation with bansuri and tabla) "Visions and Dreams" is a prime example of what "new directions" for the native American flute is all about! Mark Holland continues to rise to the challenge of reinventing forums for the Native American Flute. Progressive World is the latest in his long list of Autumn's Child releases.

As the CD title hints, this release features elements of progressive world music. Mark Holland is joined by members of the Peter Mayer Group. Peter Mayer himself plays most of the classical guitar on this project.

Mark's writing has long been charming audiences in Saint Louis. He has the ability to give voice to the flute and force you to remember the melody of each and every song. Progressive World is loaded with such songs. There is a sort of 'pop sensibility' to his songs. In other words... he writes great hooks!

Two of my favorite songs though are the extended experimental pieces "Dream Sequence" and "Spheres". Both are roughly nine minute cuts that take the listener into a tranquil dream. These are atmospherical tracks that remind me (in spirit) of the early 70's Tangerine Dream records.

Realistically, Autumn's Child has not made a bad CD. So when I tell you that this may be their best CD to date, that's saying something. Just buy it!

Progressive World/Native American Flute for the Soul.......2002-11-25

Mark Holland continues to explore new and wonderful ways to use the Native American Flute by fusing it's haunting and soulful voice with instruments from around the world. His music pleases the ear and calms the soul. Whether he uses it with western or nonwestern instruments the results are a harmonious blending of world music that is nothing short of brilliant. Mark is among the most talented writers, arrangers, and performers of the contemporary Native flute on the scene today. His music continues to take the Native Flute to new musical dimensions not often achieved by other contemporary NAF artists. He has the wonderful ability to weave the flute in an out of almost every theme, motif,and style one can imagine. Be prepared for something special on this latest release. This CD is wonderfully conceived and delivered by a great Native flute performer. I consider it one of my favorites in an already large collection of Native flute music that includes all of his music released to to date. Mark continues to set a high standard for this emerging genre of music.

When I first bought this CD I was addicted for a while. The singing is beautiful and the music is too. I had hoped for more traditional japanese instruments but it is still beautiful.

Not very eastern -- at all.......2003-07-25

Well, this is very beautiful, and it is very relaxing. I'm sure the quality of the voice work done on this disc is excellent, though I'm not an expert.

The problem is, it is not Japanese, except for the songs themselves. The instrumentation is completely western, and the arrangements of the songs tend to downplay the eastern sound of the compositions. Maybe I just didn't understand what this would be: I didn't expect koto music or anything, but I did expect to expose my children to a different type of musical structure.

Mera is a male countertenor from Japan. He appears to be quite young and may be just starting his career. Whereas most countertenors I've heard have a boy-soprano, brassy sound, Mera has a mellow, mezzo sound with a nice vibrato. I've never heard a male voice like it.

All songs on the album are sung in Japanese. There are no translations of the songs, but there are summaries which give you an idea of what the song is about. The Japanese lyrics are included, so if you can read/translate them, you'll know more than I do. (If you do translate them, please contact me. I'd like to have copies.)

Mera has the most beautiful voice I've heard in a long time. Sounds like a female mezzo but with a little mellower sound. Anyway, this album has lighter fare than his Japanese art songs album, but it's still lovely to listen to. He sings some familiar and some not so familiar folk songs.

Michael Allen Harrison's "A Tribute to Gershwin and Friends" is by no means a new album, but it's new to me, and what a killer! I had the opportunity to meet Harrison in Portland, OR last year and to see him play live. He's one of a handful of pianists so extraordinarily gifted that he seems to be the most at home with the piano at his fingertips, making the most difficult passages look like child's play. That doesn't mean that this album is showy or full of bravado. The clarity of Harrison's playing and the depth of emotion conveyed is head and shoulders above the majority of pianists out there (Michael Dulin and Philip Aaberg come to mind as players with this kind of pianism. Awesome, all three!!!) "Gershwin and Friends" is made up of thirteen compositions that harken back to a more innocent era when music was more relaxed and less competitive. Six of the songs were composed by George Gershwin, two are original Harrison pieces, and the others are standards that were composed at about the same time as the Gershwin pieces. Most are piano solos, but a few of the tracks include bass and/or guitar. For the most part, this is a quiet, soulful recording, but there are some upbeat and lively moments as well.

All of the tracks on this album are wonderful, but I have some favorites. The CD opens with a sultry "Our Love Is Here to Stay." With just piano and acoustic bass, this is the perfect slow dance. "God Bless the Child" is dark and slinky in an easy, sensual style. Bass, electric guitar and very light percussion enhance the mood. Yum! "Autumn Leaves" has been one of my favorite songs since I was a kid, and Harrison's arrangement does not disappoint. Flowing and elegant, the heartbreaking melody touches deep within. And then there's "Summertime," my all-time favorite Gershwin piece. Dark and bluesy for a couple of verses, the last minute or so is more uptempo and improvised - an incredible arrangement! "Swanee" begins in a ballad style that is dark and slow and develops into the melody most of us are familiar with in a whimsical, nostalgic style; it ends with a phrase from Stephen Foster's "Old Folks At Home" - a cute touch! "My Funny Valentine," another favorite standard of mine, closes the album with an enchanting love song full of easy grace and tenderness.

What a great album! Michael Allen Harrison has inspired me to pull out some of my Gershwin piano books and dust them off, but I can only dream of playing this music like him! Very highly recommended!

It is the perfect music to play when relaxing by the fire. Very soothing, remarkable piano... Truly a delight to listen to!
