5 out of 5 stars A Timeless Piece of Art.......2006-07-22

"Retrospective" is a timeless piece of art to be enjoyed and savored throughout a lifetime. It easily transitions into "Returning", a later creation by Will Ackerman, that also inspires the heart, mind and spirit.

1 out of 5 stars If You Buy This Windham Hill Petrospective You Will..........2003-05-22

REGRET IT!! I thoroughly regret buying this. The now famous master of Windham Hill Quality, new-age, fame and fortune has laid a goose-egg---a rotten one. After the second track, Processional,The talent drops significantly---It all sounds the same. There is hardly any artistry or composition. It's like Mr. Ackerman(I highly respect his other work though)said,(laughingly)" I'll bet they buy it because it's me and my picture." Well, I say 1/2 a star because it's Will and mega ... kudos because the talent is not there---It's a bomb!

5 out of 5 stars "A Place of Escape and Discovery".......2001-11-30

If you're looking for a crash course in William Ackerman 101, this 1993 release is an excellent place to acquaint yourself with one of the finest guitarists of the past quarter century. Whether playing solo on pieces like the gorgeous "The Bricklayer's Beautiful Daughter" or working with fellow labelmates like George Winston, Michael Hedges, Tim Story or Paul McCandless in a small ensemble setting, Ackermann is a gifted writer and performer. This is 69 minutes of absolute bliss with selections from his 1976 debut through 1992's The Opening of Doors. In his liner notes Ackerman refers to his music not as a business, but "a place of escape and discovery." This CD will help you discover the joys of this talented guitarist. HIGHLY RECOMMENDD

5 out of 5 stars A great new age album.......2000-08-05

William Ackerman is the guy who founded Windham Hill records and the whose sweet guitar lines make up many of the label's best songs. What elevates Ackerman's music beyond the usual new age background noise is his excellent songwriting ability. This album collects the best of those songs into one package. The real standouts are "The Bricklayer's Beautiful Daughter," "Visiting," "Climbing in Geometry" and "Seattle," which can only be described as achingly pretty. There is not a single clunker on this fine retrspective of Ackerman's career.

5 out of 5 stars Essential finger-style........1999-12-28

Will Ackerman is not only the CEO of new age label, Windham Hill, but he also is one of its best artists...

Here is a career compilation of finger-style compositions that represent Will Ackerman's approach nicely. I noticed that Will Ackerman differentiates very nicely with dynamics, soft melodies and clean execution.

Its beautiful if your a casual new age fan, if your a guitarist, your missing the boat if you dont already have it. As I said, its essential!

I also reccomend his first album, "In Search of the Blue Turtle". This is one of the "icon" albums that helped to usher in the new age genre...

5 out of 5 stars Beyond Music - Exquisite.......2006-06-10

Sometimes I read these reviews and think they come from insiders in the music industry, I'm not one of them just a music lover. This CD's music is passionate, dramatic, powerful, brilliant, melodic food for your soul, in total it is for me the finest CD in my collection. Alex de Grassi is in a league of his own. I don't know his work well enough to comment on any of his other CD's but this is a Masterpiece!

5 out of 5 stars Looking Back While Looking Forward.......2004-05-27

The interesting thing about a good retrospective is that it really isn't a collection of 'greatest hits,' but an opportunity for the musician to look again at his (or her) own work and select out the pieces from the past that mean the most now. Sometimes, this brings the listener new insights as well. Alex De Grassi is the kind of musician that one doesn't forget easily. His ability is astounding, his instruments include unusual built guitars, and his vision of where he wants to go leaves not stone unturned. While some of the works included here surprised me, all are examples of his best, simply because Alex De Grassi has nothing to give but his best.

The music offers a wide range of style, from solo to ensemble, from private to public, but there is not one that doesn't demonstrate De Grassi's unique ability to lay down a tapestry-like weave of melodic sound. The music ranges over a 13 year period. The works come from both his own albums and various collections put together as Windham Hill is want to do. Sound quality is, as is usual from this producer, superb.

Take the opportunity to listen to this album. Because De Grassi is, more often than not, classed as 'new age,' he is often written off without being heard. What he really is is a virtuoso guitarist with equally impressive skills as a composer. As this album proves, De Grassi is equally at home writing for ensemble as he is working as a soloist. Whether you call it 'new age,' or 'light jazz,' or 'whatever' is unimportant. What it is, is great music.

4 out of 5 stars Alex who? Don't worry........2003-06-13

I never was a fan of Alex de Grassi but I got 14 classical guitar tunes ... It's all nice! A greatest hits of sorts. Different harmonies and a piece where mr. de Grassi's heard as accompaniment. One live piece and a few "How'd he do thats." This is a paradigm for what Windham Hill is all about---An unknown muscician that has bested her instrument with mistake-free craft and gives other artisans a way to understand the beauty of music, Ok, Maybe not.But please buy this and enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Revisiting Alex de Grassi's first "Lucky Thirteen" years........2002-07-17

"The first years of being a recording artist passed in ignorant bliss," Yokosuka/Japan-born and California-raised Alex de Grassi describes the beginning of his musical career in the liner notes to his "Windham Hill Retrospective." "I was succeeding with almost no formal musical training ... I tuned the guitar funny and didn't even think about what notes I was playing."

Sounds easy, doesn't it? Well, don't be deceived. The man who wrote these lines is one of the world's leading finger style guitarists; and while he may not have had much formal training beyond his brief jazz guitar lessons with Bill Thrasher while attending U.C. Santa Barbara, he obviously just didn't need a whole lot of teaching; he already possessed most of what it took for a successful career - first and foremost, an abundance of talent, great technical facility and that natural feeling for music which distinguishes the innately gifted from those who will always have to primarily rely on studied skill. (In later years, he did however also study with eminent jazz pianist Mark Levine and took composition lessons with music teacher William A. Mathieu). Music runs in de Grassi's family; his grandfather was a violinist with the San Francisco Symphony and the leader of a string quartet, his father played classical piano and his mother was a jazz fan. Yet, young Alex was encouraged to take up a more "practical" career and eventually opted for a degree in geography - "I could use my college education to find places on the map, go there, and play my guitar," he now comments in this album's liner notes. But like the trumpet which he gave up in favor of his first guitar at age 13 after having heard Bert Jansch's "Lucky Thirteen," de Grassi's career in geography ended before it had ever begun when his cousin William Ackerman, a first rate guitarist himself, invited him in 1978 to join his start-up label Windham Hill Records.

On Windham Hill, de Grassi eventually recorded his debut "Turning: Turning Back" and five other albums (not counting this "Retrospective"); but contrary to that first record's title, he has not had to turn back ever since, soon making a reputation for his exquisite style and crystal clear, often breathtaking technique. Like silver pearls, or like a soft shower of a million glistening drops of water, de Grassi's melodies at times glide, at times trickle from note to note; over multiple layers of point and counterpoint, harmonies, themes, counter-themes, chords, rhythms and airs, almost all of which are produced exclusively on the six or however many strings of his guitar. While his first albums and his more recent "Water Garden," not least because of the many open tunings they contain, have caused de Grassi's music to be labeled "new age," his range in fact far exceeds that classification. His 1983 album "Southern Exposure" was an early foray into Iberian and South American music, and he has lately taken up that theme again with "Tata Monk," recorded in the year 2000 in cooperation with Chilean folk/jazz flutist Quinque Cruz. Similarly, the title of 1999's "Bolivian Blues Bar" describes that album's genesis as much as it is contents; from fooling around with American blues, jazz and folk tunes with a Bolivian friend who had recently moved to San Francisco, to the transcription for solo guitar and eventual recording of such standards as "It Ain't Necessarily So" from "Porgy and Bess" and two other Gershwin songs, Hoagy Carmichael's "Georgia on My Mind" and Thelonious Monk's "'Round Midnight.'

Recorded a few years before "Water Garden," "Tata Monk" and "Bolivian Blues Bar," this "Windham Hill Retrospective" features some of Alex de Grassi's best work written and performed between 1978 and 1991; from his debut album, represented by no less than five tracks ("Window," "Luther's Lullaby," "Children's Dance," "Blood and Jasmine" and the title track, here taken from the 1983 live album "An Evening With Windham Hill" and almost twice the length of the studio version) to 1991's "Deep at Night" (represented by the songs "Blue Trout," "Charlotte" and "Mirage") and "A Momentary Change of Heart" from the second Windham Hill "Guitar Sampler," likewise released in 1991. This collection is not only an excellent introduction to de Grassi's work; for those who don't already own his first albums, which despite enormous critical acclaim are sadly out of print, it is also a welcome opportunity to get a hold of at least a sample of his early recordings. In addition to the tracks from "Turning: Turning Back," the "Retrospective" also contains three eloquent pieces from de Grassi's second album "Slow Circle" ("Causeway," "White Rain" and the title track) and the centerpiece of his third album, "Clockwork" (again in the live version recorded on "An Evening With Windham Hill"). The remaining three tracks ("Overland," "Western" and "Cumulus") are graceful, intricate representatives of ""Southern Exposure."

"Since those [early] days I've become painfully aware of what I don't know," Alex de Grassi writes in closing in the liner notes of this "Retrospective" and adds, humbly: "Now I'm a student of music. Learning is discovering how little you know. I feel like I'm starting all over again every day." But while it may be true that the boundless wealth and endlessly receding horizon of the musical universe reveals itself even to the truly gifted only slowly and gradually, it is a true joy to accompany Alex de Grassi a little along the way of his personal field trip into the rich and varied world of guitar music - or to look back at his own first "Lucky Thirteen" years of that journey, as this "Retrospective" does.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Introduction to a First-Rate Fingerstyle Guitarist.......2002-03-11

This is a marvelous introduction to the acoustic finger-picking mastery of guitarist Alex de Grassi. This retrospective covers his first five albums for Windham Hill from his 1978 debut Turning: Turning back through 1983's Deep at Night. In addition, you get "A Momentary Change of Heart" from Guitar Sampler Vol. II and two live tracks from An Evening With Windham Hill: the haunting "Clockwork," the only track to feature additional musicians (lyricon, violin, bass, percussion) and the only song from 1981's Clockwork, along with "Turning: Turning Back," which at nine minutes is nearly twice as long as the studio version found on his debut. In his liner notes, de Grassis says he wanted to be a guitar player ever since he first heard Bert Jansch's album Lucky Thirteen. After listening to this album, Jansch's influences may seem subtle, but de Grassi shows himself to be a guitar player worth hearing. And with many of the albums this set draws from currently out of print, this is your best opportunity to enjoy de Grassi's early work. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

I love the Turtle Island String Quartet because of their use of a traditionally classical music ensemble to create a jazz sound. This CD is wonderful because it uses selections from their earlier recordings as well as their latest ones.

5 out of 5 stars A delicious compilation of signature tunes from Nightnoise's first four albums.......2006-09-30

Drawn from the self-titled "Nightnoise," "At the End of the Evening," "A Winter's Solstice," and "The Parting Tide," this CD is a great overview of the group's wonderfully distinctive Celtic / New Age fusion. At times sweet or hauntingly beautiful, at others progressive and jazzy, but always emotionaly moving, the work of Nightnoise has a unique and striking appeal. It's the sort of music I love to listen to while walking outdoors on a warm, fall day or sipping warm soup and catching up with a good friend. It can either make you stop and think, or help you to gently focus on the beauty of the moment. Nightnoise is a collaboration between American violinist Billy Oskay and Irish guitarist Micheal O Domhnaill, who were then joined by Michael's sister Triona Ni Dhomhnaill on keyboards, etc. and Brian Dunning on flutes. Oskay and Dunning are particularly effective and well matched when they trade back and forth between lead melody and improvisational descants. I particularly love how Dunning can range in playing style from mellow flute meanderings to sprightly tin whistle melodies to breathy, progressive accompaniments reminiscent of Jethro Tull--he really makes the music sparkle! Micheal O Domhnaill's guitar lays down a warm, comforting ground to the songs, while Triona Ni Dhomhnaill's expert piano, electronic keyboards and clear, unpretentious singing voice also add much to the group's characteristic sound. For more from these artists, try the recordings of Relativity (also featuring Michael and Triona, along with brothers Phil and Johnny Cunningham), too, and the many Celtic-inspired collaborations between Brian Dunning and keyboardist Jeff Johnson.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Celtic New Age Music!!!.......2005-12-29

I first heard Nightnoise in the early 80's. I had won a cassette tape in a radio contest, and it was a Windham Hill Collection. One of the songs on it was The Cricket's Wicket (which is on this CD) and is probably one of their best known songs. It's also one of my favorites by them. Toys Not Ties and several others are also very good. This is wonderful celtic new age music!!!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Celtic/Irish Inspired Music.......2002-11-08

This was the second (of many) Nightnoise albums that I have purchased over the years. Essentially, it is a collection from their earlier albums, including selections from the very difficult to find first Nightnoise Album. This is my favorite Nightnoise album with my all time favorite Nightnoise selection--The Cricket's Wicket-- which is worth the price by itself. It has a simplicity and beauty that is hard to find. If you like graceful Celtic/Irish influenced music, you cannot miss with this wonderful collection by recognized masters of the genre.

The CD really does give a (favorable) reflection of Shadowfax's work. Even if t wasn't, it's still a great album.

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly Motivating and Moving!.......2007-01-19

This CD spikes my creativity, motivates to expand the mind to be more open and is purely a "feel good" medicine for a heavy heart. I thank the artists for generously sharing their talent for others to benefit in many ways.

4 out of 5 stars Solid collection, Great for new fans.......2006-01-09

four and 1/2 stars. I love this band and grew up listening to Shadowdance. No other band sounds like this band. You would never confuse Shadowfax with anyone else, they are that distinctive. It's a whole new headspace. Chuck's death in 1995 was heartbreaking to me as I was hoping to see them play live but never got the chance. This is a solid collection with great tracks from their earlier work. As the previous reviewer noted, it does not contain important material from their later releases (this album used to be called "Shadowfax A Windham Hill Retrospective") but even so all the tracks on it are solid. If you like this I'd recommend picking up Shadowdance and The Dreams of Children.

4 out of 5 stars Best Of Shadowfax on Windham Hill ONLY.......2002-08-06

The title implies that this is the best of Shadowfax. And indeed it is a good collection from their earlier years on the Windham Hill label. As always, there are tracks that I would like to see (like "Above the Wailing Wall" from "Dreams of Children")that are left off, but still the tracks chosen represent a sampling of one of the best Fusion/Jazz/World/Rock bands to come along. Unfortunately, their best work in my opinion was on other labels. Even sadder that it looks like the amazing "Folksongs for a Nuclear Village" and "The Odd Get Even" are out of print! By all means, find them if you can. The harder World Beat/Jazz Fusion edge on these releases and the strong interplay between G.E.(Stinson), Charlie Bisharat and Chuck Greenberg are stellar, not to mention the excellent world percussion, bass and keyboard work. Nice of Windham Hill to provide us with their "Best Of", but a true best of will include tracks from their entire career. Even so, the music on this one still gets 4 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Very good compilation.......2001-02-24

This is a great "best of" CD in that it gives you a really good indication of what ShadowFax is all about. This was my first introduction to them and I was not disappointed!

I had the pleasure of meeting Scott a few years ago at a concert in Pensacola FL through a mutual friend. He was warm and engaging, very much like the music on this disc. This disc represents the best of his work on Windham Hill, most of the tracks coming from "Islands". His piano playing comes from many world music influences but he has developed it into a style all his own. If you're a new fan of Smooth Jazz but would like a little more variety, you should give this disc a try. Highly rated.

I first heard this album one evening on public radio while driving home. I was blown away! Great tunes that defied classification. I called the station to find out who it was and bought the CD as soon as I could. Great playing,catchy-intricate-innovative tunes,a good sound- it`s what I`d been dreaming of.Maybe they were too good or too hard to pidgeonhole, but, sadly, they are no longer together. Andy Summers played guitar with Police. Afterwards, he made three solo CDs for Private Music during 1989-1991. This retrospective features performances from each of the three.

It sure isn't bad music. It does seem a little hard for Windham Hill, but then music doesn't need to be very hard to be hard for WH. Some of it is jazz, and the rest is pop instrumental.

Police fans who dont have the previous three records probably will want this. But for most of us, this is very pedestrian fare.

3 out of 5 stars Jazz-Like Instrumentals OK But Not Great..........1998-12-09

The first Andy Summers CD I picked up was XYZ and I really like the dark beautiful sound of it, but I haven't found another one that compares. I'm not a fan of jazz and it seems that all his albums following are jazz instrumentals. I picked up World Gone Strange and Retrospective on the same day and so was a bit disappointed when I first listened to them. But, they are starting to grow on me. I like World Gone Strange, Charming Snakes, and Oudu Kanjaira as they are the least jazz-like. This album is nice when you want something quiet to listen to, but I prefer his XYZ vocals.

3 out of 5 stars One fabulous piece, the rest not what I wanted.......2007-02-24

Although Mark Isham's music is pleasant, I was disappointed that it was more electronic than I was looking for. I had heard a song that I loved and it was based on that beautiful piano piece that I purchased the album.

4 out of 5 stars Good but limited introduction..........2001-03-06

This is a fine, though limited, introduction to the soundscapes of Mark Isham. These compositions tend toward the New Age-y (produced, as they were, on the Windham Hill label) but show signs of Isham's jazz and pop backgrounds. Those familiar with his work in soundtracks will enjoy the beautiful (though rearranged for CD release) music for "The Times of Harvey Milk." It's too bad that his subsequent jazz recordings and other film music (such as "A River Runs Through It" and "October Sky") aren't included here. His trumpet-playing adds warmth there that these mostly electronic compositions sometimes lack. In short, this is a fantastic buy for the price, and a worthwhile introduction to a talented musician too often heard only in the background at the movies.
