4 out of 5 stars Worth the money.......2007-06-14

This CD has decent quality sound, considering the year the movie came out (1971). I still love it, because I love the movie! It wouldn't hurt my feelings if they remastered the soundtrack at some point, using current technology. You will appreciate this more by owning/watching/liking the movie, which is available on DVD. The movie is now a cult classic and the DVD version includes a "director comments" option. If you are a true fan of this classic, you will own the DVD, Soundtrack and the VHS.

5 out of 5 stars Best Soundtrack Ever..........2006-08-12

There's no other way to say it. This is just pure perfection... in the film, each song is perfectly suited to each scene... but alone, all the song are still great! Definitely recommended!

3 out of 5 stars MUSIC.......2006-08-04

Without having any prior listening to this cd, it was an okay review. My husband and I were under the impression that there may have been some more hit songs on the cd. There was only one.

Following the Rolling Stones-meets-Black Crowes monstrosity Give Out But Don't Give Up three years ago, Glasgow's Bobby Gillespie and pals are back at the cutting edge with a trippy collection that could rightly be tagged analog electronica. Their Trainspotting soundtrack contribution (included here) melded bluesy harp with contemporary beats and it sets the tone for 11 tracks that use thick swaths of dub, Superfly funk, cheesy electronics, and ambient dance to redefine what was once quaintly known as "head music." Loaded with samples from the cult flick Vanishing Point, the killer "Kowalski" is perhaps the best among a batch of highlights ("Burning Wheel," "Stuka"). All that's missing is a freeform FM station or two to turn it into a classic. --Jeff Bateman

4 out of 5 stars Cool, hip and smooth long night with the Scream gang.......2005-04-11

Vanishing Point is a great disc. As with all Primal Scream releases they wear their influences broadly and with distinct strokes. The background synthesized sounds are very much from a Hawkwind listening party in 1973. The beats totally modern. The guitars as crafted and to the point as ever. The vocals weave that Primal Scream druggy scene as perfectly as ever. They are in top form here, but I have a taste for all of their music in all it's forms, so at the top really does mean "at the top" of their game. I like the way they go from trippy 70s stylings to Satanic Majesties Request drum taps and finger pickings to the echoed and beat happy club sounds that are all the best of the Scream. Disonance is not a bad thing and when the Primal Scream uses this late 20th century musical technique it is to the advantage of the overall sound of the CD. Think smooth jazz and clubland neon dances, then you have Vanishing Point. HA! and the unrestrained joy of Medication and Motorhead as new century interpretations of 60's Seattle garage band rave-ups is dance crazy and a wonder to enjoy. And that is what makes Primal Scream so great, that they can move between genres in a flash and still be purely Primal Scream.

4 out of 5 stars very, very interesting.......2005-02-09

And a damn sight better than their Rolling Stones "tribute" album that preceeded it, Vanishing Point is a return to what Primal Scream do best. A marriage of guitars, synths, twisted vocals, drugged out rhythms ( both fast and slow - you get the idea that some songs were recorded under the influence of speed, some while on heroin) and psychedelic production touches. One minor gripe: when I first popped this into my cd player, the opening track "Burning Wheel" caught my attention. "I've heard this chord sequence, these sounds, before." After listening a few times, I thought I'd thumb through the cd booklet and find sampling credits for Pink Floyd's "Interstellar Overdrive" only to discover that this track is listed as a band composition. For shame!!!! Otherwise this is agreat cd. Highlights include the cover of "Motorhead", done as electronica, and the title track to "Trainspotting" ten-plus minutes of slowly unwinding, euphoria inducing, trance like psychedelia. A keeper, for sure.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best albums of the 90's.......2004-06-29

This is the best produced recordof the 90's in my opinion, and surpasses the sum of its soul/jazz/dub/garage roots. Another reviewer called this "industrial garbage" - this person has obviously never heard industrial music - cold, digital, 4 on the floor sounding stuff. Vanishing Point is warm, analog, its noise is 3D and spectrasonic - and the bass is warm, and massive. i have listened to this record hundreds of times. An absolute classic. oh - and the late Augustus Pablo plays melodica on a track - awesome. The Scream's best record, and like I said, maybe the best record of the decade - (for reference, the 90's competition would be OK Computer, My Bloody Valentine's Loveless, Orbital's Insides - off the top of my head)

2 out of 5 stars Not so great.......2003-05-24

This CD was a bit of a disappointment for me. Dischordant bits often drag on and on. For those looking for a Screamadelica-style experience, this is not it. "Medication" (depite other reviews) is a good tune. But 1 out of however-many, is not a good ratio. I might not buy more Primal Scream CDs after this, which bums me out.

5 out of 5 stars A Gem.......2002-12-31

This album tempts one to be fascist about their musical taste. I rarely comment on an album unless it is so good that I am driven to power up my laptop, fire up amazon.com, search for "primal scream" and choose to write a review. There's a lot of talent on this album, and it can appeal to the electronic/dance spinners as well as the "wall of sound/not quite industrial" new-wavers. Pick it up. It's very good.

3 out of 5 stars Australian Melodic Metal..... between 3 and 4 stars........2006-06-24

Australia doesn't produce much quality metal normally, usually only numbskull hard rock. But there are some acts like Dungeon, Black Majesty and Vanishing Point that have bucked the trend a touch over the years.

VP play melodic metal. Similar outfits might include Supreme Majesty, Statovarius in heavy mode or a number of other Euro metal bands.

Musically competent musicianship, nothing spectacular but with good use of hight and low end sound, creating a full sound to back Silvio Massaros' rich, though not overly powerful pipes. He is a quality singer but he's not Tobias Sammet in terms of ability to wail nor is he Timo Kotipelto in terms of range.

Songs open out before the listener nicely, great melodies that roll along are the name of the game here. They need something extra to take them to the next level yet this is still a worthy band. Certainly something to check out for lovers of melodic metal. And you know who you are......

4 out of 5 stars Captivating melodic metal.......2002-10-23

This Australian band may just be the best progressive metal band you've never heard. For some reason, this band just does not get any coverage in the metal press. Vanishing Point is progressive metal in the style of Dream Theater, Symphony X, and Vanden Plas. Less technically-focused than bands like Dream Theater, Vanishing Point seems to focus more on the melodic aspect of progressive metal. The vocals are similar to Dan Swano's in Nightingale, and really pull the listener into each song. Tangled in Dream is the band's second album, and is a truly excellent disc from start to finish. The opening track, Surreal, grabs you right away, and songs like Bring on the Rain, Two Minds One Soul, and the hidden track, a cover of Pink Floyd's On the Turning Away, keep you hooked the whole way through. If you like your metal to be soaring, melodic, and progressive, then Vanishing Point is the band for you. I highly recommend checking this disc out. Vanishing Point has a new album coming out (hopefully) later this year. I am eagerly awaiting it. Till then I'll have to be content replaying Tangled in Dream again...and again.

4 out of 5 stars Not a Bad Album.......2002-05-11

There are times when I thought he was singing me to sleep. They are definitely melodic and the clips set in here and there are interesting. Still I'm looking more for a rock sound and at times I thought it was slow.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty good for an up a rising Melodic/Progressive rock band.......2001-03-12

Found this band via a review ay OpenUpAndSay.com, and I find their music pretty good. I've been into the Melodic rock/metal scene for a short time, and am always looking for a band with a good solid, and strong melody within their songs that not only complements, but also enhances the standard rock instruments via the melodic additions. Silvio Massard, the Vocalist, also has a really good and strong baritone voice that just keeps on adding to the music contained within..

I look forward to seeing what else this Band will produce as time goes on...

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Punk Rock Record You Never Heard.......2004-08-04

This is one of the most burning rock records ever to come out of Boston's fertile rock scene. It's a punk rock record made in the 90's, and yet its sound is fresh and original. Who'd have thought? Driving, pounding, buzzing, and shredding with excitement and sheer, smoking pleasure this is likely to be on many people's short list. Peter Prescott's urgent vocals, Malcolm Travis and Bob Moses' slammin' rhythm, and Ed Yazidjian's wild-monkey-on-Thunderbird-and-quaaludes guitar figures come together in one relentless rock throb like the good ole' days. I command you to love this record!

    Album Description

Import only remix 'dub' album of tracks featured in their original form on their excellent, Vanshing Point release. Dub/Reggae producer Adrian Sherwood headed up most of the remixes here. Highly reccomended for fan's of Massive Attack's dub remix album, 'No Protection'. Sony.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars among Sherwood's finest work.......2001-08-26

Only dub fans like myself can truly appreciate the greatness of this album. This is a similar project to Mad Professor's dub deconstruction of Massive Attack's Protection. This is actually a superior effort to No Protection. The mastermind on Echo Dek is Adrian Sherwood (the prolific dubmaster behind African Head Charge, Creation Rebel, and Dub Syndicate), not the Scream. He takes the original Vanishing Point tracks and guts them, leaves a select few vocal snippets, amps up the drums and bass... in true DUB style. Highlights include "Last Train" (version of the classic "Trainspotting"), and the thunderous "Wise Blood" featuring vocals by the mighty Prince Far I. In most cases, the new versions improve on the originals. No disrespect to Primal Scream fans, but they wouldn't amount to much without great producers.

    5 out of 5 stars Beyond.......2001-03-11

Forget those wretched Chill-Out compilations or Moby and the like, this is the real thing--a stern rebuke to the the Kenny G's of trip hop, downtempo electronica. "Echo Dek" is a very dark and trippy recording that practices at the altar of originality. I recommend it every chance I get to people who want enliven their cd collections...and are ready for it.

5 out of 5 stars Are you Kidding?!?!.......2000-08-13

I am gonna make this short and sweet. ANYONE who had ever been in that, i-am-too-messed-up-to-move, state of mind...would enjoy this CD. This CD stuns every Audio sensation in your entire body. Pop it in, sit down and just enjoy!! A must own, even for non 'Scream fans..

4 out of 5 stars Only for the hardcore fan.......1999-03-13

Echo Dek consists of remixes of "Vanishing Point". Some of the remixes are excellent, others merely good. But considering its 27 dollar price tag, most will be fine just owning the excellent Vanishing Point CD.

5 out of 5 stars A Seminal Piece of Work.......2002-11-05

Richie from Into Another's earlier work with some old school hard core pioneers hammered out a raw, fuzzed out, grindy, piece of experimental reggae/punk/core sure to delight the heaviest of the heavy eared listeners. Little less of the Reggae experimentalism as Bad Brains but used effectively none the less. Similar in the heavy sound to Fudge Tunnels "Hate Songs in eMinor".

Shining moments are definitely the bass work with some killer tracks that tempo shift from spliff smoking dub to finger bleeding slam quality grindcore. Richie's voice is inaudible at times but it includes liner notes thankfully. Definitely takes me back to the old days.

Overall a must have for any serious hardcore collector. Other bands to check out include Uniform Choice/Madball/Supertouch/Judge.

5 out of 5 stars Something I like when I'm driving along the coast........2006-12-19

Although released earlier, when I first heard Don Harriss' "Vanishing Point" back in 1990 through a newly "new age" radio station (94.7FM which took over the defunct hard-rock station KMET) in southern Cal., I knew immediately it was something that I have to have. Since that time, my musical horizons have expanded quite a bit and throughout the whole decade or so I have extensively enjoyed listening to this cassette album. All the tracks are very well composed and soothes the mind and soul especially when driving on long distance trips. It really puts one at ease, heighten the concentration level and help tuck away those occasional subtle nuisance from the world of today. I travel on Pacific Coast Highway to Malibu alot and this album is a dream to listen to while driving along as the moon-lit sky reflecting off the beautiful sea at night. Coming from a guy growing up listening to hard-rock and heavy metal music, I must tell ya (everybody's got a softer side I guess)...I love this album very much and ALL the songs are excellent. Luckily, I was able to track down an original CD and replaced the semi worn cassette tape.

5 out of 5 stars Vanishing Point sings!.......2004-03-05

All the music in this album is purely tuneful and composed with
perfection. Many of the selections have the ability to conjure up beautiful pictures in your mind of natures's best, from lakes and streams to landscapes. Each selection is written in a
fashion to keep your mood upbeat and uplifted. It is an
album that will make your driving trips more pleasureable. I was
especially fond of the selection, "Invitations" with its conveyance of good things to come. The selection "Sunlight Samples" tunefully fits a canoe ride down a gentle stream.
In my opinion this is one of the best ablums from the celebrated
Don Harriss and his magnificent keyboard work.

4 out of 5 stars Tastefully rendered, mellow Progressive Power Metal........2007-04-06

While there are many great moments throughout this album I was never blown away or left awestruck by anything I heard on this CD. Having said that, the songcraft is incredibly fluid and frequently creative. Calling this CD Power Metal is not entirely correct, either, as it feels more like an amalgamtion of Power Metal with many graceful touches of Melodic Rock. The Progressive elements are mostly flourishes of softly layered keyboards, beautiful piano passages, and supple shifts of tempo that add brilliant texture and nuance to the already solid songwriting. The band interplay is tight, with no single musician overwhelming the others, and a sense of intelligent respect is fully achieved through both the music and the mature lyrical content. The lead singer dwells mostly in the middle ranges though he still shows considerable power and control with many sustained vocalizations. All in all, "Embrace the Silence" is very recommendable. 5 out of 5 stars Worth waiting for.......2006-07-14

I discovered Vanishing Point in 2000 with their excellent second album Tangled in Dream, and was immediately hooked on the Australian band's highly melodic brand of progressive metal. They have this Vanden Plas meets Nightingale sound with some of the best midrange vocals you could ever hope to hear. I tracked down their debut - In Thought - shortly afterwards, and found it to be enjoyable as well. At that point I started to wait for the band's next release. Little did I know that it would take five freaking years! Needless to say, Embrace the Silence had a lot to live up to.

How did the band do? Really really really well. Embrace the Silence is a big step forward for the band, and when you consider how good Tangled in Dream was, you can see that the bar is set pretty high. This album is an improvement in terms of production, performance, songwriting, and overall maturity. Embrace the Silence is a very melodic progressive metal album that achieves the perfect balance between the two elements. It's not so melodic that it doesn't flat out rock, and it's not so progressive that those elements come at the expense of the actual songs. The songs on Embrace the Silence run from 5-7 minutes each, so you're not going to be put to sleep with 10-minute instrumental passages. And the band definitely gives you your money's worth, with the album clocking in at just under 80 minutes and taking up nearly every available second on the disc.

While I didn't enjoy waiting so long for this album, it was certainly worth the wait. It's an excellent addition to Vanishing Point's catalog, and is sure to appeal to anyone who enjoys progressive and/or power metal.

NOTE: I can only hope that Vanishing Point gets picked up by a "major" label like Inside Out or Nuclear Blast, so their albums can receive the attention they truly deserve. That this band remains relatively unknown while others thrive is just sad.

The track listing is as follows:

      1. Hollow
      2. My Virtue
      3. If Only I
      4. Live to Live
      5. Embraced
      6. Season of Sundays
      7. Once a Believer
      8. Reason
      9. Breathe
      10. Somebody Save Me
      11. Insight
      12. A Life Less

5 out of 5 stars Unique Aussie Metal that's actually good!.......2006-06-05

Wow! The latest release from the Aussie power metallers is a huge step forward, mainly in production. Its clear, full and, most importantly, powerful. With this album, Vanishing Point display an edge that other Oz metal bands - Dungeon and Black Majesty are all i can think of right now - are currently lacking.

Although the music is full on power metal, it is remarkably unique - there really isn't another band that sounds similar (a great relief in this genre!). The singer's voice is lower than most, but still clean; the best comparison i can think of is Blaze Bayley, but with a different tone. The guitar and drum work is up there with the best of them, with less reliance on ultra fast playing and double kick bass. Never fear, its still as technically impressive as hell! Crank it loud and be blown away by its intensity! The Keyboard work also deserves a mention, as it features prominantly on this album.

All the songs are around 5 to 7 minutes, so it has that great epic feel, minus the ususal medievil shenanigins. A little bit of editing wouldn't have gone astray - the album plays for almost 80 minutes. And some songs do occasionally sound a little samey. This is a minor quibble though - Vanishing Point deserve to be on any respecable metalhead's shelf! (and if you don't take my word for it, take Sonata Arctica's, - they did a cover of one of their songs a couple of years back!)

Armed with excellent production and their increasing experience, I can't wait for their next release!
