Part of the Sound Healing series from Soundings of the Planet, Tao of Healing teams flautist Dean Evenson with Li Xiangting, a professor from the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and an authority on the guqin, an ancient seven-string zither from China. Their collaboration, with barely perceptible support from keyboards, acoustic guitar (Scott Huckabay) and percussion, is a hushed, serene, and inviting experience--as soft as the faintest breeze felt on a peaceful, sun-warmed afternoon. Evenson's meditative flute, which rarely strays from the instrument's comfortable low and middle ranges, is the disc's prevailing voice, with Xiangting's guqin discreetly supplying tasteful, angular accents to complement the Western vibe of Evenson's reflective improvisations. At times, in fact, this calming, slow-go disc (60 minutes in length) briefly conveys traces of jazzlike harmonics (largely Huckabay's contribution) that flavors the blissful proceedings with a nice touch of musicality. A slight soundalike quality might be detected in some tracks, but this is a minor quibble. This is Evenson's first recording where natural sounds are not included, though the liner notes assert the mix makes use of "earth resonance frequency" (7.8 hertz), all to enhance a listener's attainment of an alpha state. Actually, Evenson, Xiangting, and company do a commendable job of that on their own. A strong choice for supplementing massage or meditation. --Terry Wood

Good for pets as well as people.......2007-03-03

I purchased this cd for myself, but noticed my Basenji seemed to relax a little whenever I put the music on. I often play it for her in repeat mode when I am going to be out. She is definitely "zen'd out" by the time I return!

I can best describe the music by saying that there are no loud instruments or uptempo arrangements to distract from the relaxation experience. The melody is soothing and uncomplicated, so it works well in many settings where a quiet mood is preferable (like doggie bath day). So do something nice for your pet...and yourself...and check out this cd. Alternately, I would recommend Dean Evenson's equally pleasant "Forest Rain" cd.

Students in my tai chi exercise classes for seniors prefer this--
over several similar CDs.

Maybe its the 7.8 hertz Earth Resonance Frequency in the mix?

Can be used also when doing the 24 Form Yang style--

Although "O'Holy Night" works wonders during the Christmas season
(5 and 1/2 minutes almost fits the Form perfectly.)

"Tao of Peace" takes me back to another place in time, perfect tranquility in unity beyond the taking on of human form. This music is a wonderful gift that adds synergy to Rei-ki. Li Xiangting is a healer.

I own a number of Dean Evenson CDs, and this one is one of my favorites along with Tao of Healing. I have a hard time finding the right words to describe the music other than "perfectly woven". Everything just seems to fit right into place and is wonderfully balanced. I've always loved Oriental music, as long as it's done right - and this really is done so well. My favorite track is Slow Samba. The rhythm makes it both relaxing and uplifting at the same time. It has always brought me a deep sense of peace.

Call this corny... but I recently moved into a new home and it was very important to me to 'set the right energy' for my house. I rely heavily on music to do that, so the first songs I played in the new home were really important to me. I chose Slow Samba as the second song I played (the first was "Morning Has Broken" by Cat Stevens because it reminded me of my Grandma and the peace she brought my life.) I remember looking out over the hills and watching the sun set as Slow Samba played. Very peaceful and relaxing! I would definitely recommend this CD along with Tao of Healing.

East meets West.......2005-10-26

I use this CD a lot for meditation or yoga practice. The music has a very peaceful feel to it and I like the use of traditional Chinese instruments. There is an East meets West feel here that is very appealing. My husband likes it for a background when he does tai chi.

Dean Evenson has many fine CDs on the market, but this is probably my favorite.

A perfect companion to Tao of Healing.......2005-04-28

I also own Tao of Peace, another album by the same artists, and this one takes off where the other left off. The same beautiful flute and Guqin blend to create a soothing, and exotic mix. Perfect for massage, meditation, or yoga.

Mellow, light and playful.......2003-12-31

Flutist and composer Richard Warner combines accoustic winds, electronic keyboards, nature sounds and light percussion to evoke moods inspired by the eight trigrams of Taoist I-Ching symbolism: heaven, earth, fire, water, thunder, wind, lake, and mountain. Less oriental-sounding than might be expected, this gentle combination of accoustic and electronic sounds in both traditional and modern musical styles took me a little while to get used to. Now, however, I find it to be refreshing and delightful listening. The CD insert, proclaiming this album to be Warner's debut on the Narada label, touts his "diverse musical influences", and indeed each of his nine compositions on "Spirit of the Tao Te Ching" is noticeably different from the others. Some of the selections ("Thunder" and "Heaven") reflect oriental musical styles, while one ("Earth") is definitely colored by African traditions and others ("Sunrise", Water", "Mountains in the Mist" and "Wind") utilize various but standard New Age techniques. I still find myself wishing for a real guzheng (traditional Chinese zither) now and then to accompany Warner's sublime flutes ... But the synthesizers, voiced to imitate a guzheng, chimes, western reeds and strings, echoes, and even plunking drops of water have a charm all their own, particularly for listeners who have come to expect their use in New Age music. My favorite track is the last one, "Tao", which showcases Warner's meandering, hypnotic, wooden-flute improvisations with only chimes in the background. It is similar in effect to his two-CD set, "Quiet Heart / Spirit Wind", which contains the same, spare instrumentation and is highly recommended. Other relaxing, positive CDs featuring a variety of light styles with both western and Asian instruments are "Calming Massage" and "Natural Massage" by Tim and Paul Frantzich.

Tai Chi Music.......2002-12-08

We use this CD for Tai Chi music. It is truly top notch. Disregard the negative reviews, they are based on expectations based on his prior flute CD. If you are looking for a flute CD, look elsewhwere. This is not a flute CD, but the music is pure genius.

Not What You Expect..........2001-08-08

Nothing like his previous "Quiet Heart / Spirit Wind" CD Set, which I loved. A letdown, and only 47 minutes - I'm glad. I'll go back to enjoying his previous effort - I'm listening to "Spirit Wind" as I write this! Calming.

not what you're looking for.......2001-04-03

for those searching for enlightenment or a good piece of original composition on traditional instruments, look elsewhere! Sadly I must state this was a good idea gone wrong. The music quickly changed from what sounded like a good thing into noise and piano-ish sounds. Not what I was after! I find this happens so often with "native" sounds, whether it be North Americal, australian aboriginal, celtic, etc. You're probably looking for something more along the line of Nawang Khechog's work - a real ex-buddist monk. Skip this and move on.

Ahh! Another gem from a true master of creative enlightened musical harmony! This album flows along the path (Tao - The Way) without judgement or argument in the union and serenity of philosophical Taoism. The bamboo flute is a difficult instrument to master, invented as a form of medatation over two thousand years ago by the Soto School. Richard Warner's mastery conveys the peace of the ages in another musical treasure! If you missed Spirit Wind before - don't now - the path has brought you home!

Zen Nirvana.......1999-07-26

The Light of Tao, is quite possible my favorite new age CD. Aeoliah magically blended his masterful compositions on the synthesizer with enchanting oriental overtones, to make this CD truely a rich listening experience. A must have in any music collection, where one appreciates music that deeply moves one into a total place of zen nirvana. The sounds of the far east have never sounded better!!!
