Lucky 13: Wollo's further explorations of ambient space.......2007-06-28
Over the past decade Norwegian composer/producer Erik Wollo has specialized in guitar-based ambient music, releasing a dozen introspective albums that work equally well as unobtrusive background music, or for the more adventurous as the subject of devoted listening. His newest release, Elevations, is a further exploration of this aural landscape, 12 original compositions organized around a central theme developed over three tracks.
The recurrent motif is the Odyssey, presented in three incarnations: Blue, Red and Green. Each of the compositions starts with a subdued wash of synthesizer, to which are added keyboard fills, sound effects, and rhythm, before the statement of a simple melody, played in Blue and Green on the synthesizer, and in Red on the guitar. Once the melody ends, the effects drop out one by one until the compositions end where they began.
Spaced evenly throughout the cd, the Odesseys are interspersed with mostly quieter songs following the same pattern, a kind of aural mountainscape, with gentle slopes on either side of a towering peak.
Elevations is a complete one-man show, with Wollo playing guitars, synthesizers, percussion, as well as programming and producing. Those who appreciate the work Jon Jenkins, Patrick O'Hearn, or Steve Roach will find much to enjoy in Erik Wollo's spacious sound.

Just isn't my type of music........2007-03-10
One of Wollo's milder albums. (His music is already mild to begin with) Too boring for me, but good for falling asleep on, and background music. This album reminds me a lot of his earlier album, "Emotioinal Landscapes." It seems that every other of his albums nowadays, are too mild.

These exquisite miniatures by Campra and Couperin bear no resemblance to the "grand motets" of Lully, et al, with brass, chorus and tympani blazing away; rather they are introspective, intimate, prayerful, mellow pieces, each less than 10 minutes long, for solo high, light tenor (haute-contre), accompanied by organ, viola, violin and occasional flute. The texts are biblical--a few filled with penitence and grief ("Usquequo, Domine" by Couperin, asking how long it will be before salvation), a few with joy (Campra's "Florete prata," with images of flowers bursting forth in the presence of the Lord)--and each is sung with great intensity, elegance, pure, unforced tone and impeccable phrasing and diction by Paul Agnew. The polished accompaniments by William Christie, who leads from the organ, are as tasteful and flawlessly French as they should be. The experience here is sober and sincere, and quite moving. --Robert Levine

Depth of Holy Week Captured.......2007-04-16
I bought this for the voices of Michael Chance and James Bowman, as well as for Robert King. Once again these two famous counter-tenors are teamed up. Both with different voices but the perfect blend. Tracks 3 and 4 are solos, and the rest duets, with the singers complimenting each other magnificently. If you enjoy the mysterious and lengthy sound of sacred music, focusing specifically on the voice, you will love this recording.
a voice teacher and early music fan.......2005-12-24
The sacred music of Couperin has an intensity and power rarely found in baroque church music. It was mostly scored for one, two or 3 voices and continuo; this CD is an excellent example of his work. The name "tenebrae" probably refers to the darkness that gradually spread during the service as candles were extinguished one by one until Matins ended in darkness. The first 2 lessons are for solo voice;the third is a duet. The disc begins with a Motet which was written in honor of the marytr St. Bartholomew during which the 2 voices imitate and chase each other in 3rds. The selection "Venite Exultemus Domino" is largely an exultant text with suspensions of great beauty and ending in a surprisingly low tessitura. To my mind the "Magnificat" with its variety of textual moods and rich harmony is the real "showcase" on this recording! And with the 2 great countertenor voices of Chance and Bowman we have the best possible rendition. They are a great team vocally for they blend well and indeed are very similar in their singing style, although I think Chance as the edge in overall performance. A great recording in every way.

Customer Reviews:
Techno music for aliens........2003-04-16
Another tin box release on Chain Reaction that is an essential part of your minimal techno music collection. Vainqueur (also seen on Basic Channel) offers an oxymoronic flavor of cold synth exuding warm tones. Fans of Porter Ricks and the like will not be disappointed, but what I find actually more appealing about Vainqueur is the swaying, if you will, of their synth sounds. The "Elevation" tracks in particular sound as if about six keys on a keyboard were stroked up and down with a sustain petal helping the transitions blend in a whoosh effect, up and down the scale. This is done very tastefully, and in a muted dubby fashion. These swooshes also sound similar to the sound effect used in the science fiction movie Contact (Jodie Foster) where the communication from the alien race created a repetitious, yet synth-rich, bass-laden pulse. Can you expect variety on this CD? Yes and no. I feel like this album is more like a 12" remix release but with enough versions to make you feel like you got your money's worth. I would not expect complete, different tracks throughout the entire piece (hence the similar titles), however the works that do exist are strong enough to warrant multiple versions. But fear not, an Elevations II "Reduced" and Elevations II "Version 3" are completely different songs, and if you have the EFA Basic Channel CD, you'll happily recognize the ambient electric raindrops of "Elevations [Version 3]."
The overall feel of this album is one of a chilling, tinty, metallic score laced with high frequencies, almost as if the sound was literally coming out of the metal tin the CD is encased in. "Solanus" contains an almost-human vocoder sound, or synthetic vox element throughout, that again, sways and whooshes, adding an icy chill to the mix. Perhaps Elevations was produced in an icy cavern, or on another planet, but this album should not be overlooked, and I believe it ranks in the top 5 of best IDM/techno releases available. I'll even be bold enough to say that Vainqueur's 'Elevations' is the best Chain Reaction CD ever released.
deep, rich experimental techno.......1998-08-26
about half cool, dark pieces with quiet layers of repeating staticy melodic loops; the other half is the same sort of sound, but set against serious deep beats. undescribably beautiful, quite funky. Almost has a disco flavour to it at times, but in a good way. similar to porter ricks self titled album (not port of nubia)

Customer Reviews:
Sublime music given a solid performance that falls short of heaven.......2005-11-28
Veronique Gens and Sandrine Piau are two lovely singers. I own recordings of both of them which are lovely - Piau's Mozart arias is exquisite (better by several degrees than her more recent Handel arias recording, but that too has some fine things), and Gens' extensive recording repertoire from her Mozart to her Berlioz is regularly taken out of my CD shelves to be given another listen.
It was with the expectation of delight that I purchased this recording. To my astonishment, the performance failed to "shimmer", right from the start. It seemed pedestrian, walking where it should float. The blend of the two voices was... well, it wasn't bad, but it wasn't wonderful.
The fault is absolutely not that of the music. Couperin's lamentations are utterly, utterly beautiful. This SHOULD have been a truly gorgeous recording. Don't mistake me - it's not dreadful. The two sopranos, as I've said, are lovely on other recordings. I feel that perhaps they did not share the same vision of the works on this recording, so that they sometimes seem to be pulling away from each other rather than together. In the duet work, this is fatal...
Yet even in the solo portions of the works recorded here, I was not transported with delight. I think it may be at least partly due to the recording itself rather than the singers, but I do have a few quibbles with regard to the singing. Firstly - the Latin is not French Latin, as I've always considered it should be. Secondly, the ornamentation is inconsistent, and doesn't always follow the markings in the score. Thirdly, the tones of both sopranos seemed not to fall into the right sound for the Couperin works. I am at a loss to understand why - really, these two sopranos are so experienced in French baroque works that I fully expected them to have created a delicious performance.
I hovered between 3 and 4 stars for this. I suppose I am very much a person of "Yes, I love this" or "No, I loathe it" - my opinions are rarely tepid. Here, I am confused - because it SHOULD have been wonderful.
There are now quite a number of version of the Couperin "Leçons" available - there's the Kirkby/Nelson (white and bland), the Deller (avoid), the Jacobs/Chance (actually that's not bad! - but I truly think this work finds its apex of beauty sung by sopranos rather than countertenors), the Daniel Taylor/Robin Blaze (quite nice, but here even more than the Jacobs version, I felt the lack of soaring that one gets with two sopranos), and the version of all versions - sung by Patricia Petibon and Sophie Daneman. That version above all is beatiful beyond belief. If you only intend to have one recording of the Couperin "Leçons", I strongly recommend the Petibon/Daneman one, conducted by William Christie.
In fact, to truly understand why I so strongly recommend the alternative version, why not get both this and the Petibon/Daneman one? Listen to them one after the other - the comparison is astonishing.
profoundly affecting.......2000-10-30
Among the few sacred works published during his lifetime, the settings of the Lamentations of Jeremiah for matins services of Holy Week are among Francois Couperin's most affecting. The austere beauty of these works, which consist of one or two soprano voices with continuo, is beautifully realized in this recording which is the best of currently available offerings. Sopranos Sandrine Piau and Veronique Gens contribute the right balance of sensuality, reverence, and vocal allure, while Christophe Rousset, organ, and Emmanuel Balssa, bass viol, provide admirable support, matching the singers in their attention to inflections of the text as well as to the contours of the music. A beautiful recording, highly recommended.
