Editorial Reviews
From the Artist
Voices of a Different Dream is an ensemble of women performing poetry and song. Poets Susan Windle and Ellen Ford Mason, along with singer-composer Annie Geheb, offer a unique blend of the spoken and the sung word. With material informed by the cycles of nature and the passion for human relationship, the ensemble creates performances that inspire and delight. Their concerts have been described as "spiritual food" and "journeys of the soul."
The weaving of music into and around the poetry creates an atmosphere of openness and receptivity to the poetic line. The poems are often arranged for more than one spoken voice, with artists trading or overlapping lines or providing accents and echoes for each other. Attention to detail in the delivery of each poem and song deepens the exchange between artist and audience. The arrangement of pieces thematically allows the listener to remain for while with the evocations of a theme and move on gradually as the theme shifts.
Voices has been performing together since 1992 in a wide variety of venues in the Philadelphia region: in bookstores, libraries, living rooms, coffee houses, conferences, nature center and schools. Their recording Unimagined Possibilities was released on cassette in 1994. You Know My Name is their first recording on compact disc.
Product Description
You Know My Name is for lovers of music, lovers, of poetry, and anyone drawn to the play between the two. A melenge of original poems and a capella song on themes of human relationship and our connection to the earth, this work ranges from the contemplative to the playful. With an arresting juxtaposition and blend of voices--a kind of polyphony, but with each voice distinct--the group is breaking ground with its "ensemble poetry." Voices of a Different Dream opens up the relationship between poetry and song, showing new ways that the two can be woven together. This is not background music for multi-tasking, but art to be listened to, with full attention, in sections or all at once. And then listened to again. And again. You Know My Name is not a hard work to hear--the tone is inviting and the poetry accessible on many levels. It takes time and a willingness to be still. Listening deeply brings many rewards.
