I first fell in love witht he music of Shadowfax in 1986 when I heard the song "Ghost Bird" from the "Shadowdance" album. "The Odd Get Even" is, IMHO, their very best album. The founder of the band, Chuck Greenburg, died of a heart attack in 1995 which caused the remaining members to disband. God, I miss their music. No other music is quite like theirs. Their sound is unique, original, and hauntingly beautiful. Thanks, Chuck for the artistic sounds you left behind for us.

This album as the other reviewer has already noted is more active than their earlier albums, but I really appreciate this album. The variety of sounds and the interesting rhythms plus the huge flavor of Middle Eastern music make this album an enjoyable change of pace from other New Age / Jazz fair.

It's really a shame that the band has disbanded since Greenberg passed on. If you enjoy Mannheim Steamroller, Yanni (ssshh!), or are more into modern jazz such as Chick Corea or Pat Metheny I would recommend you give this CD a whirl. I hate the term "New Age," but this is where you'll most often find this CD. Quite frankly if more New Age music were like this...New Age wouldn't have gotten such a bad rap.

Unlike most bands, I'd have to say that ALL of their albums are great!

3 out of 5 stars Shadowfax got busy!.......2004-04-03

On their sixth album, Shadowfax sounds a little bit different from what their fans has heard before. The group got a new producer along with their new record deal, and he helped give them a even bigger sound. Stu Nevitt brought in his usual arsenal of percussion instruments, but also added electronic drum programming. David Lewis' synthesizers were much more prominent than on their last two albums. G.E. Stinson's lead guitar was almost exclusively electric, much like their debut, "Watercourse Way".

The resulting musical pieces, therefore, have a louder sound. Occasionally, the tracks sound a bit cluttered. Even the slower material, such as "Sujata" and "One Winter Morning", have arrangements that seem rather "busy". This results in a bit less variety than their other CD's. On the title track, they sound more like a conventional jazz-fusion band. Fans of their three Windham Hill releases or their previous "Folksongs from a Nuclear Village" may be a bit disappointed in the lack of quieter, more acoustic pieces.

Still, Shadowfax never put out a bad album in their career. There's more collaborative songwriting among the band members than on any other Shadowfax CD. As a result, there are a lot of engaging melodies and the usual combination of infleuences. Excellent playing, too, with a high dose of energy. In particular, those who like Stinson's playing will be especially pleased with his work here, on what turned out to be his last album with the group.

The only reason this doesn't get quite as strong a recommendation as other Shadowfax albums is, again, the lack of a real change in pace. Still, those who feel that typical New Age music is slow and boring will definitely get a kick out of "The Odd Get Even". It might be enough to convert you to Shadowfax, and any one who enjoys the faster numbers on their other albums will certainly like this one. Unfortunately, it was the one and only product of their fiasco of a deal with the now-defunct Private Music label, so it's harder to find now. So, snap up a used copy quickly.
