About the Artist
The composer and performer of this album, Henriques Wolf, was born and raised in Holland. As a kid, I took some pianolessons, but discovered soon my need for improvisation and creation of my own music. My experiences with my music teachers was not great, mainly because as a child I was very sensitive. It inhibited my need to play and excersize the old masters, I felt more like creating my own style of music. In Holland I studied physics, my focus was not on music, however always when I saw a piano I could not resist. I studied a few languages as well, which turned out to be a great asset. In my early twenties I moved to the US strictly as an adventure. I came here without money and friends. I had a hard time, especially the first years. Did play very little, short of some gigs in New York, where I lived for a few years. New York introduced me to the US. I liked the openness and the free spirit that I sensed. Very much different than Europe. I still had a hard time finding inner peace, which inhibited my ability to create music. After my move to Southern Califiornia, I did some engineering, than again I tasted my love for adventure. I learned to fly, and went to New Mexico for a job with a airtanker company.(Those that dump water over fires with big old airplanes). A risky adventure, but again I missed the water and moved to the San Fransisco Bay Area.

It took a while before I regained inner peace, and settled. I loved the setting and the romance of the San Fransisco bay area. After buying and moving on my old yacht, a few years ago, I began to record some of my compositions, and compiled a few of these on this CD. These are all very peacefull soothing romantic compositions, influenced by my frieds, and my feelings.

Product Description
Acqua Musica, a label created like the music within it. All music was created in the San Fransisco bay on a classic yacht, which set the environment, feel and romance of the music created within this label, and this album, Reverie. The composer of this album, and the creator of this label, Henriques Wolf, has always felt the strength, power, and tremendous romantic feel of the water. Especially being born and raised in Holland, which has historically always been a seafaring country.

This old History, together with the romance of the Italian language, created this label, Acqua Musica.

While many hospitals across the country send new mums and babes home equipped with discs of classical music to soothe and gently stimulate babies' tender minds, Ultrasound brings together a delightfully well-rounded set specifically chosen for those still in the womb. Expectant moms will appreciate the effects of the mellow strains of Bach's Suite No. 3, the delicate playfulness of Tchaikovsky's "Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairy," and Mozart's proven-to-make-you-smart Sonata for Two Pianos featuring André Previn. Debussy's "Clair de lune" is especially lovely as conducted and fluted by James Galway, and Leontyne Price is a warm blanket of comfort giving voice to Schubert's "Ave Maria." Indeed, these songs are aural balm to both parent and child long after birth. --Paige La Grone

5 out of 5 stars Grandmother's Review.......2007-05-21

I purchased this product for my expectant daughter, and she says that it is the best gift she has ever received. She, herself, finds the music very soothing and relaxing, and she is certain that it is wonderful for her child.

5 out of 5 stars great cd!.......2007-05-14

This is a fantastic product! I bought it to play for my unborn daughter and I started it when I was around five mos. pregnant. She moves all over the place when I put the headphones on my belly and I can even tell by her movements that she likes some songs more than others. I have done a lot of research into playing music for unborn babies, including the helpfulness as far as birthing positions when the music is played regularly. This cd fits the bill for all of the research I've done. It is completely worth the money!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Love It!!!.......2007-04-02

I have a 6 month old daughter. I first purchased this CD when I was pregnant and would place my earphones on my belly for her to listen. I now use it in her room at bedtime and I absolutely love it. I have a collection of other CD's, but honestly this is my favorite. It is a very nice blend of songs. It is soothing for baby and parents. If you only buy one CD I would recommend you make it this one.

5 out of 5 stars My daughter loved this before she was born.......2006-12-15

When I was about 18 weeks pregnant I bought this and two other CDs of gentle classical music and played one of them for her every 2nd or 3rd night, putting headphones on my belly. I was actually skeptical about this being "music for the unborn" but she really did react to this one much more than anything else I ever played for her. If she hadn't been very active that day I could always lay down in the evening with the headphones and play her music, and she's wriggle around. She especially liked #5 and #10. :)

She didn't seem to have much connection to it after she arrived, but she does enjoy music in general. (She's currently almost 11 mo old.)

4 out of 5 stars enjoyable.......2006-08-03

I have enjoyed this cd thus far. If you have the money to spend, this is relaxing and enjoyable, however you can get similar music for free on your local classical station. So if you would rather save your money...just tune in on your radio dial. I am glad I bought the cd for the familiarity of the songs, but I also love just plain old classical radio.

5 out of 5 stars Not A Music Critic ... But A Lover Of All Music ..........2006-08-29

Let's not be too harsh regarding this CD. I purchased this as my first baby step into the classical genre and it absolutely made me fall in love with classical music and appreciate it in a way I never could when people tried to make me like it. It is such a wide variety of classical music and I find romance to be joyful, tragic, gentle, harsh & a complete roller coaster that I found all in this ONE CD! It also made my boyfriend who hates, or shall I say HATED classical music NOW like it! That was an amazing feat! We now have many classical cd's and we always go back to this one for dinner parties, romantic baths and other things... I played this CD so much, that it got damaged and I just purchased another one to replace the one I bought years ago. If you are a critic, stay away from this cd, you will rob it of its beauty & innocence. If you are a beginner and want to open your mind to all that classical music has to offer, then this is the best money you can spend. BUY & ENJOY!!!

3 out of 5 stars Misleading title scheme.......2006-01-01

This is what bothered me about the CD. Three of the biggest eras in classical music were: the baroque era, the classical era, and the romantic era. Now, with CD's titled baroque favorites, classical favorites and romantic classics, one would expect these CD's to be era specific. Such is not the case. If you read the back of the CD it even says "from the romantic era of music", but the there are composers like Vivaldi (baroque) and Debussy (impressionism) on this CD. About more than half are from the wrong eras. So this music is romantic in the non-musical sense of the word, which is fine, but a little bit misleading.

2 out of 5 stars Don't Bother...Really!.......2005-02-21

Not what I call classical composers! THis cd is annoying in a way I really can't stand. It lacks the pure elegance of the classical days. Don't buy this cd unless you want a phony all around bad album played by cheap ameteurs.

3 out of 5 stars Could have been better.......2004-02-19

I think the quality is good, and better on a few tracks, but all these romantic tracks?? Not what I listened to. Actually I was kind of disappointed; I had purchased an abundance of the "Favorites" collection some were better than others.
I was kind of perturbed when some same tracks on this CD were on another CD, and visa versa.

Still, I suppose for the price, one can't go wrong.

3 out of 5 stars Some great tracks, but flawed nonetheless.......2004-01-12

Whether or not this CD lives up to its promise of "Romantic" music is not truly a concern, being that the entire nature of classical music is that it is open to one's own interpretation. However, I can speak to the quality of the recordings themselves.

A few of the tracks (Reverie, Canon, Sarabande, a few others) are absolutely superb. Well recorded, and played with genius bravado, coupled with great arrangements (it was interesting to hear Reverie outside of its native instrument, the Piano). Most of the tracks, however, are absolutely horrid. Fur Elise for the sheer amateurish quality, Vivaldi's Concerto for oboe and strings sounds like it was copied from an old phonograph record, as does Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty Suite, Mendelssohn's Spring Song, and Puccini's Gianni Schicci, and a few others. A few other tracks still are played horribly, most of them already mentioned.

All in all, for the price you are getting quite a few good tracks, but don't expect stellar quality. I would instead recommend Chopin's Nocturnes and Mozart's and Tchaikovsky's Piano concertos of you're looking for something romantic.

5 out of 5 stars Probably the best compilation of a single composer's works. Ever!.......2007-05-06

Claude Debussy is perhaps the most understated composer in the history of man. His ability to compose both on the piano and for orchestra is unmatched, in my humble opinion. The fact that Debussy was able to also arrange many contemporary and previous composers' works just adds to his resume. He had a gift, pure and simple.

Although this album doesn't (well, honestly it couldn't) contain all of Debussy's catalog, it does certainly contain some of his best work. There is actually only one track on this CD that I don't care for; that would be Golligwogg's Cake-Walk; it is just a bit annoying to me.

Beyond my dislike for that one track, the entire CD is a beautifully aranged, beautifully played, well recorded compilation with good sound mixing and it is a respectful tribute to a truly great composer.

"Claire de Lune" (Moonlighting) is perhaps one of the most gorgeous pieces of music ever composed; this is the orchestrated version, which I prefer, but the piano version is nice. "Arabesque No. 1" is superb. "Fetes" is both haunting and airy. "Reverie" is the best piano piece I have ever heard. "The Girl with the Flaxen Hair" is also a wonderful piano piece. "The Sunken Cathedral" is dark and mysterious, a true wonder.

The rest of the album is fantastic. Listed above are just my personal favorites from the disc. I listen to this CD at least once a week, but often more. It is perfect for relaxation, for listening while reading, or for my personal favorite use, to block out noise while I am writing.

I would recommend this to any classical lover.

If you have not heard Debussy's music, you must get this CD; it will have you ordering more of his compositions almost immediately.

The man was a genius.

I would also add that if you enjoy this, I recommend that you continue your Debussy experience with the following: Debussy: Orchestral Works I and Debussy: Orchestral Works II

5 out of 5 stars This is a brilliant assembly of Debussy. .......2006-07-08

After listening to his "Greatest Hits," I know why he is considered one of the best.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS THE STUFF RIGHT HERE!.......2005-09-12

I BOUGHT THIS BECAUSE I WAS TRYING EXPAND MY HORIZONS, YOU KNOW? CULTURALLY AND MENTALLY, YOU KNOW? SERIOUSLY THOUGH I WAS IN THE SHOP AND I WAS HAVING A GAZE AROUND THE PLACE AND THEN THIS PICTURE JUST JUMPS OUT AT ME, AND I PICKED IT UP AND IT WAS THIS DEBUSSY CHAP AND ID HEARD ABOUT HIM ON THE BBC LEARNING ZONE SO I THOUGHT ;why not?; SERIOUSLY THOUGH I DRAGGED IT HOME AND I POPPED IT IN THE OLD CD PLAYER AND IT FLOORED ME.......I MEAN SERIOUSLY THIS THING...AMAAZING STUFF..I MEAN TODAYS MUSIC HAS NOTHING, NOTHING NOTHING ON THIS STUFF RIGHT HERE.

SOME GOOD TRACKS ARE:
TRACK 1 IS THE BEST. THE OPENING FLUTE ON THE TRACK IS TOTALLY CHILLED AND COOL, REMINDS ME A BIT OF TRACK 13 ON ILL COMMUNICATION BY THE BEASTIE BOYS...A COINCIDENCE???

THE ONLY WEAK TRACK ON THE ALBUM IS TRACK 6, THE UNFORTUNATELY TITLED "CHILDRENS CORNER SUITE: GOLLIWOGGS CAKE WALK" THE MUSIC IS JUST DATED MAN, JUST AS DATED AS THE TITLE.

OVERALL THOUGH THIS IS A QUALITY ALBUM, WITH CHILLS, SPILLS AND THRILLS. SERIOUSLY THOUGH A FINE EFFORT.

5 out of 5 stars Debussy is the best. Ever........2004-07-23

I love Debussy and all of his brilliant work. I barely listen to any other classical music, so I am not an authority, just an honest lover of music. I play piano and love piano music, so I was not disappointed at a piano Flaxen-Haired Girl. I've never heard an orchestrated version and don't need to. This is a good introductory CD to Debussy's work, I love it! The only thing I don't care for is the Arabesque #1 (Track 9). The horn is kind of grating and clunky to hear in such an otherwise beautiful piece. Still, its interesting and different. Everything Debussy made is purest gold.

5 out of 5 stars i am dumb.......2004-07-01

And I'm a doomass because I didn't proof-read my other review and I wrote that Clair de Lune was performed by piano on this disc, which it isn't. Anyway, the piano version is better.

4 out of 5 stars The Best of Erick Satie.......2007-06-11

The reason I bought this product, is because I was familiar with the 3 Gymnopedies of Erick Satie and also another of his work: The Gnosiemme (I'm not sure about the spelling) No. 4. After listening to the CD I felt very happy with it because include both versions of the Gymnopedies, the Orchestral and the one for piano and of course the Gnosiemme No. 4 which I now like it very much. The pianist makes justice to Satie's work and if you like his work is a good buy.

5 out of 5 stars A forerunner to minimalism.......2007-04-13

Satie is a forerunner to minimalism. Each piece of his music is a beauty. He also had great influence on many famous composers and musicians in his age. This album is one of the best piano classical.

3 out of 5 stars Richard review of Best of Satie.......2005-09-02

The recording is well done. Eric Satie is not the type of music that many people will appreciate. I like his music and this particular recording.

5 out of 5 stars Got Satie?.......2005-07-27

... Well folks. This may be the perfect album to get started. This features some of the best-known works by the wierd and witty Erik Satie, including the Gymnopedies (both the original piano and the orchestrated versions), the Gnossiennes, just to name a few.

The performance done by pianist Klara Kormendi is relatively plain and simple, just as Satie might have wanted. Some of his music is actually not too difficult to play... A great CD at a budget price. Kudos to Naxos for a good performance at a good price.

Also, what I'm equally impressed is the fact that in this "appreciation" album, the listener will actually be listening to many "sets" of pieces. Some of those albums (Beethoven and Mozart for example) are mere collections of selected tracks, many just one movement of a large work, such as a symphony. In some you will only be listening to selected numbers of different large "sets" of pieces. In Chopin's for example one may listen only few of the 20+ nocturnes (No. 2 for example), 15+ waltzes, and 20+ mazurkas he wrote, so one would not feel complete listening to the whole "cycles" of short pieces. Satie, fortunatley, prefered using tiny sets of pieces, most of them only comprising of three movments each. Plus each piece is short. ALL of the three Gymnopedies. ALL of the six Gnossiennes. ALL of the three Sarabandes. ALL of the three nocturnes. One can already feel happy listening to couple "sets" within a single CD.

Once again, this may be the perfect album to get started with Erik Satie. And get ALL out of those pieces!!!

5 out of 5 stars My favorite CD!.......2007-07-29

Van Cliburn is a master pianist, and this CD is pure listening enjoyment. I generally am not into clasical music, but this is fun. His working fingers convince me that they are not working. They are dancing, and they are having great fun. WONDERFUL!!

5 out of 5 stars Music to my ears!.......2007-04-04

I bought this CD as a "treat" for my 16 year old son, who has just finished a homeschool music course for one of his electives. The last part of the course required listening to music from all the great composers, Baroque through contemporary periods, and identifying the more famous pieces by name and composer. He not only enjoyed the course, he now actually listens to this CD for his own enjoyment (when he's not playing 80's rock). What more could a mother ask for? (I'll tell you. I ask him to borrow it, it's lovely.)

5 out of 5 stars Legend!.......2006-10-11

This is the greatest compilation of recordings ever made by the legendary pianist Van Cliburn. Although I am a cellist, I wear this cd out on a regular basis both at the office and home. I actually have an extra copy to play at the office. All of these recordings are superb in sound quality, performance and incredibly inspiring. The Schumann, Chopin, Rachmaninoff and Liszt pieces are stellar and my personal favorites. I only wish there were dvd's with Cliburn's performances for those of us too young to have seen him perform live. CD is a must-have for any classical music lover's collection.

5 out of 5 stars Probably the Best Piano CD ever!.......2006-04-13

If you like Piano music, this is the CD for you. Van Cliburn is at home with great songs that anyone will recognize. It is a masterfully performed set of songs for anyone.

5 out of 5 stars of the 6 or 7 recordings .......2007-05-10

I've heard almost every artist of Debussy's wonderful solo piano music, Pascal roge is the finest. the only one you need actually.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Debussy performances I've heard........2006-10-12

There's obviously hundreds of options if you're just "looking for some Debussy", but keep in mind that the $3 CDs at Best Buy are $3 for a reason: They don't put any money into the production. It's near impossible to enjoy such amazing works as this if it's being recorded on a cheap microphone across the room from an amateur clanking away on an upright piano!

Great recording, great performances. I don't know what the other reviewer was talking about with the "volume problems", this CD is actually mastered a little bit louder than most of the genre.

5 out of 5 stars Luminescent performances of Debussy's piano music! .......2005-03-30

I bought this CD on the suggestion of a former piano professor with whom I studied. I'm really glad I followed his suggestion.

It's a rare performer who can take pieces that we've heard over and over and OVER again, and bring something fresh to them. Pascal Rogé has pulled this off -- and then some!

Of the two CD set, I really can't tell which is my favorite: I'll play one CD, and listen to it over and over again and decide that one is my favorite; then I listen to the other one and the same thing happens!

Which piece is the best? It's really difficult to tell, simply because the playing throughout is of such high caliber! L'isle joyeuse is ecstatic -- the timing of the phrases, the colors achieved are almost miraculous! (This is my favorite performance of L'isle joyeuse, hands down!) Le vent dans la plaine actually conveys the idea of wind moving over a plain; Ce qu'a vu le vent d'ouest (What the West Wind Has Seen) is just downright creepy in a musical description of an extratropical storm (what was a hurricane, until it lost its tropical characteristics -- but not its wind and the potential for damage).

And then, by contrast, Rogé's performance of Debussy's Toccata has the necessary dryness to pull off the feeling of a clavecin and yet conveys a vivid sense of tonal color!

I've had the CD a week, and I can already tell this is going to be one of my very favorite CDs. I've heard Horowitz and Gieseking playing these pieces, as well -- the Rogé is definitely my favorite. If you're going to buy a comprehensive CD of Debussy's piano music -- this one is the one to get!

5 out of 5 stars one of my favorites.......2004-10-27

I am a young, yet avid, piano fan, and when I began playing Debussy last year I knew I had to get a cd. This cd is really amazing, the whole Children's Corner Suite is so much fun to listen to and each song is true to it's title. I would highly recommend this, both cds have earned themselves in my nightly rotation of classical music, and will continue to fill the boring hours of homework with amazing background music.

5 out of 5 stars A great performance by a great pianist.......2002-01-31

If you ask me - they ought to put Pascal Roge in the series of "Great Pianists of the 20th century". His recordings of Debussy, Ravel and Satie's piano music are among the best I know for these composers, if not the very best. Roge's tender touch is especially good for their dreamy, hovering style. Indeed, in pieces like "l'Isle Joyeuse" I prefer Horowitz's powerful dynamism, and Roge sounds a little pale - but these are the exceptions, not the rule. His performance of the "Reverie" - in my view Debussy's best work and one of the masterpieces of piano music in all times - is touching, exciting, lovely; and so is the "Clair de lune" and many other pieces. Most recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Lacuna Coil - Strong Debut Album .......2007-07-27

Lacuna Coil is one of the main members of the new wave of progressive metal that features crunching guitars, epic songwriting and powerful female vocals. Similarities to bands like Evanescence and Stream Of Passion are very evident. "Reverie" was the band's first full length album and shows the promise that this band would go on to bigger and better things. Overall the album is somewhat evident of a band in search of a sound. They try different things here and there and to me this is a good thing. I honestly wish they would do more of this with their later material, as lately they have really locked themselves into a formula. The band is Italian and all of the lyrics here are in English. Christina has a definite accent to her vocals that would be polished up significantly on later releases. The songs are for the most part good. Highlights include "Circle", "Stately Lover", and the title track "Reverie". Epic sounding metal with just a hint of progressive rock. The band would go on to do better albums, but this one was a very good debut.

4 out of 5 stars Only the beginning!.......2007-06-05

Other than a self-titled EP, I believe this was Lacuna Coil's first full-length release. What a way to make a debut! This album shows that the band has some serious potential; although they do exhibit some downfalls on this album as well.

The most obvious thing to me on this record, is the fact that it comes across as sort of experimental. Don't get me wrong, most of the songs are hard and heavy, dark and melodic; but there is some material that (to me) shows that the band was not sure in which direction they wanted to go in. The downfalls however, are fairly insignificant when you hear the album as a whole.

1. Circle - This track is an awesome way to open the album. The vocals by Cristina and Andrea are both heavy and harmonizing at the same time. The band plays heavy all throughout and makes for a pretty cool opening. 4/5

2. Stately Lover - I want to like this song, I really do. It is heavy and melodic, but something seems a bit off on this one. The vocals are top-notch, but I feel that Andrea's "I don't know what the hell you say," is out of place on this track. This alone makes the song feel a bit cramped with a lot of material. Good song overall, just a bit off. 3.5/5

3. Honeymoon Suite - Andrea starts off strong on this song, with great harmonizing my Cristina. This song seems to be another that has a lot of material and they aren't sure what sound it is they want. Almost as if the band couldn't decide what role Cristina would play on this album, and were just trying different things with her and Andrea. Okay song. 3.5/5

4. My Wings - I love the way this song begins. Hard, heavy, and the quintessential Coil sound we have all come to love! The song stays heavy all the way through, and with Cristina singing, you can't go wrong. Awesome track! 4/5

5. To Myself I Turned - This is my personal favorite on the album. The lyrcis are dark yet at the same time, provide a sense of uplifting spirit. Makes you want to prove all the doubters wrong with whatever it is you're doing in life. Great song, with and awesome beginning! 5/5

6. Cold - This song picks right back up where the last song left off. The beginning makes you think it's going to be a "ballad" type song, and some may say that it is, but it still remains heavy and haunting. Awesome guitar work on this track! 4/5

7. Reverie - I never realized how long this song was. Although this song can come across as experimental; and it does have a lot of material all stuffed in there, showing each band members strengths, the song does seriously rock! Although I feel Andrea and Cristina don't harmonize completely well here, it is one of Andrea's strongest outings. Pretty cool song overall. 4/5

8. Veins of Glass - The beginning of this song sounds very familiar and I can't seem to place it. On this track, Andrea shows us that he is really no fluke. He can indeed come across as weak at times, but here along with Cristina, this song is hauntingly calm. A very strong track by the Coil, and an under-rated gem on this album. 4.5/5

9. Falling Again - This song is amazing! I have come to expect that the last track of any Lacuna Coil album is going to kick ass! The beginning alone makes this song! Cristina seems to pour a lot of her emotions into this song, and maybe this is what showed the band that she truly belongs up front! A true 5-star song to end their debut LP. 5/5

So, after what seems like a somewhat shaky beginning, Lacuna Coil bounce right back with some serious hits here. "In a Reverie" as I said, seemed to be a mixed bag as the band wasn't sure exactly where Cristina was going to fit. They seemed to have fixed the problem with their next out-put!

A must-own for any fans of Lacuna Coil!

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2007-04-02

If you are a fan this is a good album.
A couple of great songs and then others that show the band at it's
beginnings. Buy it cheap and you won't cry.

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece!.......2006-04-07

Even though "In A Reverie" is quite catchy, at the same time each song has the ability to strike a different emotional chord with almost anyone. The guitars on the album, although heavy, produce melodies that fit together and flow perfectly. The drums, while not too complicated or technical, are still something to pay special attention to. Finally, the aggressive tones of Andrea Ferro combined with the stunning vocal talents of Cristina Scabbia fit in perfectly to finish out this album's musical equation.

When I first heard Lacuna Coil's self-titled 1998 EP, I was extremely impressed with the performances and composition of the music and disappointed with the lack of production quality. Here was another outfit that was strengthening my faith in women in metal. For Lacuna Coil features the beautiful Cristina Scabbia, an angel who rivals even Anneke van Giersbergen of The Gathering as a lead vocalist. Her crystalline voice is ably complemented by co-vocalist Andrea Ferro, whose masculine, gritty presence on the microphone provides a striking and effective contrast. The EP offered listeners six rich and moving songs, but producer Waldemar Sorychta didn't seem to capture the inherent power in this goth metal/power rock hybrid in his recording. The emotion and inspiration was there; it simply needed the proper soundscape in which to flourish.

To his credit, Sorychta is not a man who makes the same mistakes twice. Lacuna Coil turned to him again to produce In a Reverie and this time Woodhouse Studios has given the band a sound to match their abundant talent. Whereas an acoustic feel seemed prominent on the EP, the band's first full-length album brings us a heavy, electric edge that augments Ferro's growling tones and allows Scabbia to soar to even greater heights. Fans of The Gathering, Anathema, and Theatre of Tragedy will immediately recognize the ambient, gothic feel that pervades the music of Lacuna Coil. These Italians, however, don't overdose on melancholy: In a Reverie holds its own as a power metal album, and is full of tension and energy.

The album begins with the emotional "Circle," as guitarist Cristiano Migliore and bassist Marco Coti Zelati (who co-write most of the band's material) build up to a driving crescendo of a chorus in which Scabbia's sweet voice shines with frustration and despair. On "Stately Lover," she is almost operatic, and when she sings "I just need you absolutely, to sail this ship of mine," a man would have be to utterly detached not to desire to be the object of her obsession. Ferro is such an object on "Honeymoon Suite," as he takes the role of her bitter and estranged lover, raging at her to leave his life as she cries for his forgiveness. Drummer Cristiano Mozzati gets into the act on "My Wings," with thunderous beats that lead up to a huge chorus in which Ferro's death grunt and Scabbia's siren call mix to create something truly explosive. The album ends, interestingly enough, with a new version of the EP's best track, "Falling Again." The contrast between the EP and LP are shown here clearly, as a song that was previously orchestrated solely with an acoustic guitar has now been adorned with lush, mechanical rhythms, sweeping keyboards (played by Sorychta), and blazing electric guitars.

Lacuna Coil has found their groove on their first full-length album, and it is likely to have wide appeal among fans of both metal's lighter and heavier casts. Dark and haunting, it emphatically confirms the potential of these Italian power rockers. Once engrossed in its sepulchral ambience, listeners might find themselves immersed In a Reverie from which they do not wish to emerge. -Ladd Everitt

Back in the '70s, the rapid development of synthesizers and electronic keyboards had a huge impact on popular music, with Isao Tomita among the leading exponents of multimedia, surround-sound events associated in Western Europe with such very different musicians as Rick Wakeman and Jean-Michel Jarre. The present disc has less grandiose aims, being a well-balanced selection of, to quote the original liner notes, "Virtuoso electronic performances of Debussy's beautiful tone paintings." It's easy to scoff at the concept behind Tomita's approach--take some of the most poetic music around and give it the consistency of aural cotton wool--yet there's no denying the skill with which he translates Debussy's soundworld, preserving the harmonic interest of the piano originals and bringing out many subtleties of texture. Inevitably the slower numbers come off best--"Clair de Lune" or "Reverie" could easily become chill-out favorites. "Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun," however, is not so much a travesty as a vaporization of the orchestral masterpiece. A mixed bag, but with enough musical interest to make Tomita's "sound clouds" of more than just curiosity value. --Richard Whitehouse

5 out of 5 stars Another great electronic adaptation of classical music by Isao Tomita.......2007-06-02

Released in 1974, this all electronic adaptation of works by Claude Debussy is really quite good and showcases Isao Tomita and his flair for synthesizer wizardry. I think that Isao more or less captures the dreamy and haunting mood of Debussy's compositions and also adds a bit of his own (humorous) flair here and there with some "light-hearted" synth sounds.

The music on this album was recorded entirely with a moog synthesizer although the sweeping and majestic sound of a mellotron with string setting pokes through the mix on occasion. As a big synthesizer fan, I thought it was interesting that the various settings on the moog were listed as "equipment" including things like oscillators and lowpass filters etc. This particular synthesizer was pretty versatile and a virtually infinite number of sounds could be generated, as is amply demonstrated by Isao on this album.

In addition to the works originally included on Snowflakes are Dancing, the last track was taken from his Firebird album (1976) and is another work composed largely on the moog synthesizer although other keyboards were used including a Fender electric piano and a Hohner Clavinet C.

The sound of this high performance CD is excellent and trust me, the changes in dynamics virtually leap out at you.

All in all, this is an excellent recording of electronic music by an excellent electronic composer. Highly recommended along with his 1976 adaptation of The Planets (by Gustav Holst).

5 out of 5 stars A classic!.......2007-05-12

This was one of my favorites for years. Tomita has a way of presenting classical music that will captivate every sense.

5 out of 5 stars Synthesizers are Dancing.......2007-03-28

During the seventies, the prog music of Yes, (early) Genesis, Renaissance, and especially Emerson, Lake & Palmer cast a hypnotic spell over legions of high school nurds such as myself. Much of what held it together was a fascination with the sounds eminating from the still somewhat new Moog Synthesizer. It wasn't long before my high school art room pals & myself began looking for anything Moog, and found quite a bit outside the rock music pantheon, most notably the 'Switched On Bach' recordings of Walter/Wendy Carlos. They were interesting, but nothing quite prepared us for the release of Tomita's 'Snowflakes Are Dancing'. Perhaps it was because the timing coincided with a 'high' point in our collective psyhedelic experimentations.... Debussy's music is already an alternative, ethereal experience in the classical world, and Tomita's choice of sounds & production techniques put this recording in a class by itself (umm... especially with a pair of good headphones). I am happy to report that, upon listening to this well produced CD release with nothing more than a cup of herbal tea, I was happily transported once again. It is one delightfully Bizarre recording. 'Highly' recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A seminal work that stands the test of time.......2006-08-03

Tomita was one of the early pioneers of electronic music. This CD, originally released in the 70's, was at the time a masterpiece. That was in the days of patch cords and laborious manual over dubbing, so not every cut is up to today's standars. Still, the finer pieces on this CD stand with anything ever done in the genre: luminous, melodic, and even entrancing. At its best, a magical CD highly recommended not only for the connoisseur, but for anyone who enjoys synthesized music.
