I've been listening to it for about a week now and can't believe how good it is. It's beautifully produced and musically genius. It is definitely a harder sounding album that former albums, both in terms of the "crunch" guitar sound and the vocal edge. Notably, it's very tight without too many tangential interludes, yet it still keeps SX's tradition of odd meters, very clever transitions, great melodies, and epic and powerful vocalization. Like many of the best albums out there, this one seems to require a few listens to pick up on the subtle cues and amazing music - which is great because I know it will age like fine wine. You won't get bored of this one anytime soon, and you may find it's immediately your fav SX album. Two thumbs up.

I opted to wait a bit before submitting my CD review. I like to give new music a few good listens to become acquainted with its contents. I recently attended the SymphonyX show in Portland. At the time I wasn't excited about Paradise Lost; probably because I was comparing it to older material. After seeing/hearing many of these songs performed live, I compiled my entire SX catalogue into an MP3 disc. After completing the entire disc while traveling on extended weekends, I realized just how incredibly powerful Paradise Lost is. Each song is full of precision and skilled musical craftsmanship.

This is without a doubt an outstanding group of songs by one of rock music's greatest musicians. From the opening moments of Oculus to the perfect Revelation, Paradise Lost should be considered a strong 2007 Grammy contender. Michael Romeo, Russell Allen, Jason Rullo, Michael Pinnella and Michael Lepond have created their most powerful release to date. Not a moment of fluff or filler here.

Trust me folks, there will never be another Symphony X. Enjoy them while you can. Newcomers to the band should enjoy everything from The Damnation Game forward.

Russel Allen is without a doubt one of the most powerful singers of our times, and Michael Romeo is pure genius in how he has crafted this album and he slays on his guitar! Every song is great and their sound is more powerful than ever before. They are the best progressive metal act today and now officially blow Dream Theater away....

It's a great CD. Any Symphony X fan who hasn't picked it up yet should. And kudos to Amazon. When I first received it in the mail, opened the fancy jewel case and no CD was in there! I called customer service and they quickly shipped me another one at no cost to me.

I've noticed in various metal publications (as well as the reviews here) that Paradise Lost's 2007 album In Requiem is being hailed as a "return to form" and the band's best album since 1995's Draconian Times. What exactly did the band have to "return" from? I suppose Host and Believe in Nothing could be considered below Paradise Lost's usual high standards, but One Second, Symbol of Life and Paradise Lost were all fantastic albums. In Requiem is simply the logical extension of those recent works.

I will grant that In Requiem seems like a tighter, more focused album than its predecessors. The band seems far more interested in writing good metal songs than in coming up with dance beats, which is fine by me. Once again, Paradise Lost demonstrates why no one can touch them when it comes to balancing a dark atmosphere and subject matter with completely irresistible melodies (see for example, songs like Enemy and Beneath Black Skies). There isn't a lot of experimentation, nor are there any Dead Can Dance or Smiths covers this time around. Of course, I tend to think that Paradise Lost can do whatever they want at this point, considering the fact that they pretty much invented the whole gothic metal genre.

So yeah, it's a really solid album. I just think that most of the praise it is receiving could just as easily have been heaped upon either of the band's previous albums. I do think that the cover artwork for In Requiem is one of the best, if not the best, of the band's album covers to date.

I agree with the comments from the previous review. This CD is really good. Paradise Lost is back in top form with this release and it's about time; the last album that I really liked was Draconian Times, and that was over 10 years ago! I had bought a few other post Draconian Times albums and was sorely disappointed. I had just about forgotten about Paradise Lost when I decided to risk buying this and I am not disappointed. This is what they should have done years ago, but better late then never!

I've been a Paradise Lost fan since Draconian Times. I think this is their best effort in years and might even be my favorite album from them. It's on constant rotation on my MP3 player. Notable tracks are "Never for the Damned", "The Enemy" and "Praise Lamented Shade" which is a very dark and churning song. Very passionate vocals and melodies. This is a great release from a great band.

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

This is one of those CD's that keeps you guessing about its meaning. Lisa Gerrard of Dead Can Dance, 2 solo CD's, & several movie theme CD's joins forces with Patrick Cassidy to create an antithetical sound scape of what in my interpretation maybe about the history of Celtic Spirituality on the island of Ireland.

The 1st song "The Song of Amergin" is about Amergin, a Celtic leader who according to legend is the 1st to set foot on Ireland to battle the "god's" for possession of the land.

The 2nd song "Maranatha" (Come Lord) maybe about Saint Patrick bringing Christianity to the Ireland or maybe the cry of the land to free itself from the ancient pagan gods.

The 3rd song "Amergin's Invocation" makes the final cleansing of the land which the 4th song "Elegy" mourns the death of the pagan gods.

The 5th song "Sailing to Byzantium" is the 1st form of Christianity to come to the Celtics. Historically the Celtic Christian church was semi-independent from Rome & took on a more Eastern Byzantine to almost Coptic Christian Mysticism that expressed the love of God & nature.

The 6th song is the most interesting on the CD; "Abwoon" is Aramaic for "Our Father" that Lisa Gerrard sings with a deep alto using the Aramaic language that Jesus used for his "How to Pray" prayer when he was on the Earth.

The 7th song "Immortal Memory" maybe about the universality of ancient Christianity or how God remembers all things? Or maybe this being the theme song is an overview of the rest of the songs?

The 8th song "Paradise Lost" maybe about the overtaking of the Celtic Church to conform to Roman Catholic doctrine & practice by Bishop Augustine 600 A.D. (not Saint Augustine of Hippo 400 A.D.) or about how modern Ireland has forgotten its true spiritual roots.

The 9th song "I Asked For Love" is plainly about getting the opposite from prayer until one just asks for God where he or she may receive freely.

The 10th song "Psallit In Aure Dei" is Patrick Cassidy main score from the words of Thomas of Celano, who was a disciple of & wrote a biography about Saint Francis of Assisi.

Try to come up with your own interpretation of this intriguing CD.

Well produced to bring out Lisa Gerrard's most unique singing style, but not as original as her 2 solo CD's "The Mirror Pool" & "Duality". Reading a few reviews below I agree that at times the music from this CD sounds like "Gorecki's 3rd Symphony" or something like Arvo Part to John Travener but it is done in good taste. Therefore a "4" is given for lack of originality.

Paradise Lost is darker than Hell itself; my stomach churns and writhes in knots every time I hear it. I love it.

Amazing album, haunting, and worth every penny for Paradise Lost alone. There are a few tracks that aren't very memorable, but all in all this is a five-star album.

Although these compositions are characterised by pleasing tonalities recorded in richly reverberant ambiance, they are altogether lacking with regard to melodic development or musical substance. There is nothing memorable about "Immortal Memory." Emotionally flat, this disc is positively dreary. This CD contains 57 minutes of excessively introspective, monotonous music that inspires nearly as much emotion as contemplating drying cement. An antidepressant medication may be necessary after listening. A disappointing addition to my musical library.

It is hard not to reference or compare Lisa Gerard's solo efforts to Dead Can Dance catalogue. I guess I was expecting something that would continue DCD tradition. The first thing that struck me was that the dead could really dance to the DCD music but they appear to be haunted and sorry ghosts in "Immortal Memory". The music is truly mournful. There is nothing wrong with mournful and haunting program for a dics, but I found those emotions falling little flat in Lisa Gerard's production. Her music sounds very ambitious but never achieves the drama and "goose bumps" effect of Gorecki's III Symphony (Symphony of Sorrow Songs) or Avro Part's "Fratres". Maybe this comparison is not fair, after all the latter two are classical music's contemporary masters, but I get an impression that Lisa Gerard's aim was equally serious. Maybe she set her goals too high.

This album is perfect for drifting off to sleep, or for a relaxing meditation session. The music is very much like a soundtrack (similar in feel to Gerrard's "Whale Rider" soundtrack work). The music is orchestral and ethereal with Gerrard's haunting vocals. She has one of the most distinctive voices in modern music and her voice is in top form here.

So why 4 stars as opposed to 5? It is almost too mellow. I really prefer the greater diversity of sounds on her previous solo efforts. This album is great in certain scenarios and a wonderful album to relax too, but somehow it leaves me wanting just a little more. All in all, though it really is lovely and the perfect way to wind down and relax in swirls of beauty in today's crazy fast-paced world.

I remember years ago when Draconian Times was released. My friends and I were primarily into very heavy music such as Carcass. I also remember sitting in a room with a few of them listening to Draconian Times for the first time and there was nothing but silence and awed looks on everyone's face. That album was, and still is, truly something special.

I've gone on and purchased every other Paradise Lost CD over the years and have been consistently disappointed. I felt the band had peaked and then suddenly veered off course. Each of the CDs after Draconian Times have been collecting dust on my racks for years now. I heard about the self-titled CD and of course assumed it was more of the same. I saw some very positive reviews and once again decided to bite... why not, after all Paradise Lost had previously delivered what remains to be one of the best albums I've ever heard.

This self-titled CD is amazing. I won't bother naming highlights because the whole album is a highlight. It is truly another masterpiece, and I'm stunned that after years of mediocrity they suddenly produced this. I hope they continue on this path and leave behind the pop/electronic direction. This album gets 5 stars for being extraordinary.

4 out of 5 stars A return to form for one of the UK's most influential bands........2006-08-25

I recall a time when Paradise Lost were at the forefront of the doom/death scene. Their 1991 album "Gothic" was the finest example of the genre at that time and a huge influence on hundreds of bands worldwide. Over the last 15 years, Paradise Lost have changed dramatically, leaving the majority of their original fan-base behind and venturing into a more gothic metal / rock / pop style. Personally, I lost interest in the band after "Draconian Times" and with the band constantly receiving poor reviews within the metal community I thought I might never appreciate a Paradise Lost album again.

Then this new self-titled album comes along and the reviews for it looked very positive. I thought I'd give it a go and see what it was all about and I'm so glad I did! Before anyone gets too excited, the guys haven't reverted back to their roots. This is still modern Paradise Lost, but it seems they've finally found a sound that suits their melancholic rock extremely well. I guess there is a similar atmosphere to "Draconian Times" being a dark depressive mood, which can only be a good thing for their older fans. There's nothing exceptionally experimental here, but "Paradise Lost" is one of the most consistently excellent albums I've heard this year.

Highlights are aplenty, with "Don't Belong", "Redshift" and "All You Leave Behind" being personal favourites, but there really isn't anything bad on here. Occasionally, there's something resembling pop anthems which aren't my preference such as the chorus to "Grey" and the single "Forever After", but these moments are used for variety rather than atmosphere breakers. I should also point out that although I like the sound of the album, the production could have been better. There are a lot of things going on in some of these tracks, and a big clear, crunchy sound would have been awesome, but I'm nitpicking now.

This is the band's 10th full length studio album and I'm as surprised and excited as anyone to find them in such good form. I truly hope this is not a one-off "for the fans" album and that they will continue down this path in future.

My introduction to Paradise came back with the release of Draconian Times. In a time when I was deeply into the gut-rot sounds of death metal bands such as Cannibal Corpse this band pointed out to me that you can be just as dark without the growls or incantations over the headphones. In time they expanded their sound, incorporating some electronics into the mix until they arrived at their latest album.
The self titled album simply blew me away... The last album I had picked up from them was "One Second" which started to show the new face of the band. It seems they have gotten just that much better. Every track leads well into one another starting with Don't Belong, a somber track that points out the seeming effortlessness that this band seems to have when writing great music. Grey stands out as one of my personal favorites... a good beat and wonderful melody accompanied by dark yet engaging vocals. However my absolute favorite track is "Red Shift" which has a perfect mix of heavy guitar, perfect beat, and picture perfect singing. The album was so good I ended up picking up "Symbol of Life" immediately after and was equally pleased.
Simply put... anyone looking to pick up an album that evokes a somber mood while keeping a great beat should pick this one up!

This album is one of PL's best along with Icon and Draconian Times.
It is even more diverse and better sounding than Draconian Times, in my opinion.

This is definately to be destined a classic. One of the best rock albums ever.

I was very pleasantly surprised as you dont see bands like this to go better than their best stuff in 10 years, but unlike The Cure they have managed to prove the opposite. Great work! A rock masterpeice!

The problem is that the big a** recording compoanies will not promote it and the world will never hear about it until years to come. It's OK since I dont care about stupid people's opinions.

P.S. You can still buy it cheaper from overstock, where amazon in order to compete have dropped the price. Anyway, the price is totally deserved bc u get what you pay for.

I've listened to most of their cds, and I must say with tracks like "Grey", "Close your eyes", "Shine" you can't do better. It's just amazing, you get a sense of peace and yet sometimes it's creepy. I will be playing this @ a block party soon. No matter what no one says they are the best Gothic Metal band.

    4 out of 5 stars Excellent Mid-Paced Gothic Doom Metal.......2006-08-03

    Icon is Paradise Lost's fourth full-length album and contains their best material up to that point. Paradise Lost's style, at the time, could perhaps best be described as mid-paced gothic doom metal with a singer that sounds like James Hetfield on a good day.

    The standout tracks are the kick-a$$ opener "Embers Fire," as well as "True Belief," "Christianity" and the haunting closing gothic instrumental "Deus Misereatur." These four cuts are all 5-Star pieces and definitely worth the purchase of the CD. The reason I rate it 4-Stars, however, is because the rest of the songs are filler, at least for the most part; they're unmemorable and, at times, even annoying. I always skip 'em.

    In "True Belief" singer Nick Holmes powerfully cries out for a true belief (what else?). The transparent honesty and spiritual depth of this track, not to mention the moving vocal delivery, are most welcome. In fact, the song will give you goosebumps! Isn't a "true belief" what we're all looking for? The truth or ultimate reality? Something we can sink our teeth into and live or die by?

    "Christianity" is another phenomenal enigmatic piece featuring a haunting melodic intro with soothing female vocals. By the way, what an unconventional song title! Only "Paradise Lost" would dare to name a song "Christianity" in a typically sacreligious musical genre. Any other doom/death/black metal band would name the song "Christianity DIE!"

    I rate Icon on a par with their fifth opus, the popular Draconian Times. After this Paradise Lost would venture forth into pop-goth rock terrain, pretty much leaving the metal genre behind for good.

    This album is terrible. A true horror to my ears, but perhaps I am simply jaded by good metal, from Black to Death to Doom to Gothic, and even some metalcore hybrids and certain grindcore releases. I think it's the fact that I adored their earlier release "Gothic", which might be one of the best and most brutal pieces of dark music in metal. It is completely exeptable to cover new ground in music, but at least allow those new grounds to be in the same universe, or just change the band name all together, because this is false advertizing at it's most disgusting. It angers me how artists can lose their nerve this severely, comparable only to Katatonia, Anathema, and Theatre of Tragedy in their genius at first listen and overall abandonment to commercialist foregrounds later. I suppose Samael isn't much better either. Even if you don't enjoy extreme music like I do, and I am tame compared to some, explore other avenues of listening, or don't say you like metal at all.

    If, God forbid, you do enjoy this piece of s@3!, check out the later works of the above listed bands as well. They are sure to amuse! If not, give "Gothic", "Ceremony of Opposites", and "Brave Murder Day", a chance. These releases are superior, and will be more palatable to a true metal enthusiast.

    Although their past few albums have been too lightweight for my tastes, the first 5 albums by the band are classic GOTHIC METAL, NOT doom metal like one reviewer put it. Doom is Candlemass, early Sabbath, Solitude Aeturnus, Wretched, Pentagram, Obsessed, etc. Gothic metal is Paradise Lost up until the late 90s, mid period My Dying Bride etc. Paradise Lost is just a great gothic metal band who has become over the last few albums.... LOST, but this album from the mid 90s is classic.

    The mood throughout the CD is held intact by shifts in lead guitar and occasional swashes of keyboards. But by track 12 a monotony has completely unfolded and I was left with a gothic experience with very little variation. The final track(#13)is easily the most interesting, sounding more like classical music than the doom-laden instrumentation of the earlier tracks. But I can't say I didn't like the album. It was good, with enough interesting lead guitar changes to keep things relatively on course. But get "Draconian Times" first...because I said so. "Respect my aw-thor-a-tay!"

    Draconian Times came out in 1995 and sold quite well in Europe thanks to magazines like Kerrang calling them the next Metallica. But unfortunately in the States they did not even crack the top 100 (compared to #16 in the UK). Compared to earlier albums their sound was more stripped down. Words like "dark", "heavy", and "sparse" come to mind when I think of Draconian Times. I love the contrast in many of the songs between a heavy guitar riff followed by a melody on piano or clean quitar. Nick Holmes also goes from Hetfield-like powerful vocals to softspoken words. I think about half the album is excellent and the other half is not bad. My favorites are Enchantment, Hallowed Land, The Last Time, Forever Failure, Elusive Cure, and Jaded. Paradise Lost's sound would continue to evolve going in a more techno direction much to the annoyance of many fans. Of the five albums I own I still think this is their best.

    I'm a fan of most genres of rock, ranging from soft rock to death metal. And I can say one thing, and that is that I've never heard another album out there like this one. Draconian Times is probably one of the best rock albums I've ever had the opportunity to buy. This cd proves that you don't have to be the fastest and craziest musician to write a great song. I've owned Draconian Times for quite a while now and I still have not become sick of hearing it. If you want an album that will blow you away with originality, buy this cd.

    This is like some other reviewer rightly said, the most overlooked metal album of the 90s. If you are one of those people (like me) lamenting the death of metal like the days of old Metallica, Megadeth etc, just pick this album up and you will know what I am talking about. Draconian Times really came during a draconian time for heavy metal and it filled such a big gap. With incredible ENCHANTMENT, the epic album begins and goes only from strength to strength. Hallowed Land, an superb song with chugging guitars of Aaron Aedy will smash you and so does Last Time and Once Solemn. If you hear Once Solemn with your eyes closed, you could really mistake it for old Metallica, the heavy thrashing guitars, excellent vocals, heavy drums etc. Shadow Kings, Elusive Cure, Shades of Gods all live up to the great titles. But the standout track of this album has to be FOREVER FAILURE...this is one of the best songs PL has ever written.

    You have to buy to CD to believe what I am saying. Even if you dont have any PL albums, this is a great way to start. It marks the progression of the band, which started as a death metal outfit, to what it eventually became. PL is the most underrated and highly talented band in the world. Every single work of this genius band is incredible and every single self-respecting metal fan should possess them....

    I think I will start off by saying that this album is terrific. It is very very dark and melancholic and sounds best when rain lashes out of your window.
    The albums starts with the amazing "Enchantment" and the powerful choir at the background that just like the title- puts a spell on you that doesn't wear off for hours and hours. After the dark "Enchantment" comes the faster "Hallowed Land"- and the album is already at it's peak. By the way, if you are not familiar with "Paradise Lost" than "Hallowed Land" is the right song for you to download and get to know this supreme band. Track number four ("Forever Failure") is the most depresing in the album and it deals with suiciding and feeling of total failure, it is also one of the few Paradise Lost songs that actually say something- and that is the downside of the album. Although the lyrics gives a great dark mood it doesn't mean anything at all (except for very few cases). But, all in all, the wonderful music makes up for the lack of lyrics and gives you one of my favourite albums of all time-DRACONIA TIMES.

    Draconian Times by Paradise Lost is one of the most powerfull dark-rock / metal albums around. There are many bands today who attempt dark metal and with mostly embarassing results. This album is an exception. Nick Holmes drives every word straight to the heart in a Hetfield like roar but at times he uses a low gothic voice. Guitarists Aaron Aedie and Greg Mackintosh play very powerfull simple riffs that dominate the album and the general atmosphere is very moody. Everything here is solid from start to end. Unfortunaltely Paradise Lost are not well known outside of Europe and this album did not get the exposure it deserves. I highly recommend this CD to anyone into hard rock, metal and quality music in general.

    Wow I cant believe this masterpiece has only two reviews. I bought this cd a long time ago because I was a major fan of Cradle of Filth, and Dani said in an interview that this was one of his favorite cds. I didnt take to this cd immediatly, but years later this is just awsome. I find the guitars on this cd just immaculate. Another reviewer complained of the drumming. It isnt the strongpoint of this cd, but it hardly ruins it. The sound has a doom, gothic sound but mixed with metallica. At least thats my opinion.
    Gothic 10 Excellent guitar throughout this one. Towards the end you have some nice keyboards. This is primarily a guitar song. This is also one of the few songs on the cd that has female vocals. They are not overbearing like some bands are. They are just right.
    Dead Emotion 9 A bit heavier than the last one. Lots of good growls. The guitars are a mix of choppy riffs and spiraling solos.
    Shattered 8 It might be a little repetitive at points but dont mistake repetitive for boring. It sounds so good you wont care.
    Rapture 9 Not really much I can say to describe this except that it is really good. A bit darker than the first three.
    Eternal 10 This is the classic paradice lost song to me. Too good for words. Definantly my favorite.
    Falling Forever 7.5-8 I wouldnt really say that any songs on here are weak, but if I had to pick a weak song this would probably be one of them. Still hardly a bad song.
    Angel Tears 6 I really dont know why they put this on the cd. Its just a couple minutes of guitar. The guitar is good but they should have just made it into a song.
    Silent 7.5 This one has really good guitars, but it kind of just goes on too long.
    Painless 9 After a few letdowns if that what you want to call them. This song gets back on track with one of the best songs on the cd.
    Desolate 8 Very dark instrumental. Brooding doom. Sounds like a horror film.
    Rotting Misery [Doom Dub] [*][Dub] 10 My second favorite after eternal. The riffs are just bad a$$, and there is a lot of good keys too. Brooding and dark.
    Breeding Fear [Demolition Dub] [*][Dub] 8.5 This sounds very death metal oriented which is out of character for the rest of the cd. Very good.
    So if you are into gothic or doom metal like My Dying Bride, Tristania, or Cradle of filth. Or if you are just a metal head you definantly need this one in your collection.

    This monumental Paradise Lost album is beautiful, haunting, surreal, dark, dramatic, and, well, Gothic! Unfortunately, the drummer's time is murderously unsteady and ruins this otherwise magnificent tome! Arrrrrrrggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhh.

    Their second and by far their best album, "Gothic" combines the brutal doom/death approach of their debut with beautiful melodies and the occasional orchestra and female vocals. Probably the first to do so and certainly the best, this album created an entire genre. (Although present day "gothic metal" has nothing to do with this dark masterpiece). Beautiful guitar melodies and awesome grunting by Mr. Nick Holmes, the best grunt ever in my opinion. An album with no weak moments and many classics like "Shattered", "Rapture", "Eternal", "The Painless" and off course the title track. Present day Paradise Lost sucks pretty bad I admit, but on this album they were certainly for real! Poser Marilyn Manson goths of today, please stay away from this album 'cause it was not created for you and you couldn't handle it! For true metalheads though this is the ultimate doom/death album.
