Customer Reviews:
Great to Hear All those great Voices from the Past.......2007-07-05
I just wanted to confirm what the first reviewer had to say about this CD. To hear Ethyl Merman, Mary Martin, Andrea McCardle etc. singing their trademark songs brought a lot of memories from the mid-centry musical theater back again. The last song by Glynis Johns is especially poignant.
You certainly can't beat the price!
A Good One!.......2006-11-10
This is a very good CD, mostly because it's the original artists. I've had some that were re-recorded by no name artists that were ghastly. This one is a really good one--including the sound quality. If I had one wish, I would wish it were longer!

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Judy Garland Please!.......2007-01-21
It was said that if Judy Garland had lived the role would have been hers - if you could gotten her on the set every day. But there was no doubt that she would have been the perfect age for the part and that her voice even while she was struggling in the late 60's would have been anything but better than Lucy's. If only....
Bad Casting/Poor recording.......2006-11-03
The soundtrack to jerry Herman's Mame with Lucille Ball, Bea Arthur and Robert Preston is a recording for hard core Mame Fans only, and even they have to bite down hard to make it pallatable. Primarily due to the exceedingly poor soundtrack quality, this soundtrack is one of the poorest recordings I have ever heard! Lucille Ball is totally miscast as Mame, although she try's very hard. Beatrice Arthur is wonderful as on the B'way cast album w/ Angela Landsburry. Robert Preston is the one presence I actually had to have the disc for. I may copy them to another disc, so I don't have to put up with the rest of this dreadful recording, so full of noise you're looking for the noise reduction button!!!Not for the timid!
Lucy you did a wonderful job !!!!!.......2006-01-22
Lucille Ball, gave it her best shot and I think she Sang, and Danced wonderful. Id rather hear Lucy !!! than that LOUD british singer Angela Lansbury, she seemend to screaming most of her songs in her OBC !! Lucy was more beliveble in her singing, So move out of the way Angela Lucille Ball is Mame !!!
Disappointing,but worth a listen.......2006-01-11
The main reason for buying this CD is to hear Jerry Herman's lovely score. It's always worth listening to,but this version is
like the movie itself-a major disappointment. There are a few
good things on the disc-the title track,Robert Preston,Beatrice
Arthur, and Jane Connell. But the rest of the cast simply can't
sing, and Fred Werner's musical direction is mediocre at best.
And the worst thing of all is Lucille Ball.Sure, she tries hard, but
let's face it-as "I Love Lucy" proved,she simply was not a musical comedy performer(and I'm a Lucy fan!)There is no doubt
that Angela Lansbury should have played Mame, but just as they
did with "My Fair Lady" and Julie Andrews,Warner Brothers didn't
consider her a big enough name for the box office.Overall, this is an acceptable soundtrack, but if you want the best "Mame"
album, get the Broadway cast recording instead.
Three stars for third-rate.......2005-12-25
This 1974 disaster all but ended Auntie Mame's career -- and Lucille Ball's. Though to get a full scope of the bad you must see the movie if you dare this soundtrack gives broad hints. If Lucy was photographed through gauze some of her vocals (like the notorious solo duet leading off "If He Walked Into My Life") sound as though she was recorded through it. Compounding the travesty the arranger Ralph Burns turned the grande dame of Beekman Place into a singing tart, with keeyute shticks that suggest less a musical triumph than a musical sitcom. Not everyone suffers and dies; Robert Preston is the apex of mellow crooning the film's one new tune, "Loving You", which starts off hauntingly then swoons to Lucy's gauze; and there is no stopping the trouper in Bea Arthur. But casting Lucy was a mistake, a mistake compounded by a tone-deaf production. My Mame is still Angela Lansbury's, and Goddard Lieberson's.
P. S. The Warner Music folks must have laughed when they turned this album into a limited-edition price gouge. There is no difference between the current CD and the LP; the timings on Rhino Handmade's site are identical to the dust jacket's. Whoever said "A fool and his money are easily parted" was thinking record collectors.

Jazz is a funny creature . . ........2007-03-18
. . . seldom sticking to stereotypes, always branching out into new aesthetics, even as it annexes previously unknown musical vistas, and seeming to recreate itself every dozen or twenty years.
This disc, purveyed by a way-geeky looking redhead female pianist of heroic proportions, assaying super-sophisticated Afro/Cuban jazz, reeks of authenticity despite its unlikely genesis. But that's jazz for you. Wide Open Windows, her second outing of three as leader (neither the previous, Having to Ask, nor the subsequent, Length of Days, heard by me) is a stunner.
Witkowski, a player of great presence on piano, has absorbed, internalized, and reconfigured that venerable music, Afro-Cuban jazz, with complete ease and authority. With entirely sympathetic and deft bandmates (Jonathan Paul, bass, and Tom Hipskind, players never before heard by me, and, especially, rising saxman, Donny McCaslin on four numbers equaling about half the time), she establishes herself as a huge presence on the Latin/jazz scene.
My only gripe is her "Sanctus," arising, one supposes, out of her stint as musical director of All Angels Episcopal Church on Manhattan's Upper West Side. As a Catholic Christian, I applaud her desire to honor God with her jazz; unfortunately, this setting of the great liturgical hymn is just too mundane and "poppish" to make much of an impression. Couple that with her mediocre vocals, and you have the weakest number on the disc, despite some muscular sax from McCaslin.
But that's hardly worth complaining about, seeing as it comprises only 2:45 of disc time, so I'm not even going to subtract a half star. In any case, this is really fine Latin jazz, which, if you're at all a fan of, you won't want to miss.

Deanna Witkowski 's Wide Open Window.......2003-03-20
At some point in time, a "Wide Open Window", of opportunity will unveil itself. Envision an atmosphere where one navigates the possibilities of merging ideas of the present and future then you'll discover a remarkable young pianist named Deanna Witkowski. "Wide Open Window" is Deanna's sophomore effort; I haven't heard her debut recording from 1998. Deanna hails from the Windy City, upon this riveting second outing, the wonderful talents that this lady processes informs that you're in for impeccable journey in jazz blended wrapped by the intriguing melodies of Afro-Cuban music that lures you into the grace and beauty of this exquisite collection of music.
"All Through The Night" a Cole Porter tune opens the 10-song set. Ms. Witkowski with the support of a talented cast of sidemen travel without variables reframing this piece, romping this sassy samba with continuity. This is vintage trio jazz swinging at it's best.
Coming in at the second spot, Deanna gives us her self-penned composition titled "New August Tune" This track is influenced by her studies of Afro-Cuban Jazz with Cuban piano masters Chucho Valdés and Hilario Duran in the mid `90s, this cut grooves with a purpose. Mirroring the masters that came before him tenor saxman Donny McCaslin solos convincingly, commanding your attention every step of the way with this dynamic performance.
The title track penned by Witkowski "Wide Open Window" makes its appearance with a bop like sensibilities featuring not only the talents of Ms. Witkowski impressionistic piano stylings. Saxophonist Donny McCaslin reveals way he's not your average musician he assuredly breathes life into the cold steel as if Deanna wrote the tune with him in mind.
"From This Moment On" comes in at 4th spot. Deanna elegantly captures the essence of Cole Porter composition in an alluring yet in a seductive fashion adding texture with a touch of sultry backing vocals, which she also provides. Midway through this number Deanna illustrates way she's a serious player to recon with in the world of jazz.
Ms. Witkowski delivers another self-penned composition, this one's called "A Rare Appearance". The band shuffles the harmonic melodies like a rim-shot without hesitation, trading solos back and forth with endless array of energy displaying their talents as sideman that will indeed open doors for them.
"Speak My Name," penned by Deanna is another boppin' number highlights some seriously strong chops by the pianist. Her sideman at this vantage point negotiates with flawless interplay between one another probing and weaving with exceptional prowess.
By now it's obvious that Ms. Witkowski adores Cole Porter's compositions and arrangements. This time it's "Just One Of Those Things" the seventh track on the cd. Deanna tackles this swinging tune with fire in her hands, rumbling chords joyously trading solos with bassist Jonathan Paul and drummer Tom Hipskind in this trio setting without falter.
Deanna approaches the next tune with timbre yet reconstructing the imagery of this melodic masterpiece, she sustains this stellar moment by co-writers Howard Dietz and Arthur Schwartz titled "You and The Night and The Music" with good taste and harmonious phrasings while flirting with each note.
The distinctive yet swinging sounds of "A Wonderful Guy" by Rodgers and Hammerstein comes in at the nine spot. Sparked by fuel Deanna delivers again with support from her more than ample sidemen as they engage in the fundamentals of jazz in unison with complex rhythms that raises the bar of quality musicianship!
"Sanctus" the last selection on "Wide Open Window" is a tune written by Deanna. Ms. Witkowski lends her vocal talents too us in a subtle way, providing a nice touch for the conclusion of this mesmerizing collection of songs.
If you're looking to embrace jazz with a touch of Afro-Cuba flavored ingredients then this record comes highly-recommend. Keep all eyes upon Deanna Witkowski and her record label Khaeon Records, please follow this core of diversely talented jazz musicians that are on the horizon. ...

the best !.......2006-07-16
As I'm mostly drawn to Celtic music with singing (Karen Matheson, etc.), I was surprised to find how fully satisfying this recording is - there is dancing and singing, and even flying in it!
The finest instrumental Celtic I've heard so far.
Incredible as always.......2000-11-16
While I am sad that 1/3 of Helicon (Chris Norman, a flutist) is not on this CD, I am ecstatic that Bullock and Kolodner, the other 2/3, are expanding their roots. I was first introduced to Laura Risk at Helicon's annual Winter Solstice Concert in Baltimore a few years ago, and there was something very unique about her. Her playing wasn't fancy, it was just pure and from the heart. I am glad to see that Risk, Bullock, and Kolodner decided to release this magnificent album of mostly Irish music. Having not listened to this album for a while (I had begun to listen fiddlers like Natalie MacMaster, Ray Ellis etc.), I was amazed to hear the same Irish fiddle tunes arranged for a trio. It gives the music a whole different spin that is truly unique to Greenfire. For example, "The Cape Breton Fiddlers Welcome to Shetland," "Dinky's," and "Jackson's" are very popular fiddle tunes normally heard in Celidh-like settings, but here take on a whole different meaning without losing their raw energy. Although this is a celtic string ensemble, it is nothing like a chamber orchestra where things tend to drag some. This is 3 professional musicians who specialize in international music, and keep the tunes as pure as possible. "Sean Ryan's," and "Chief O'Neill's Favourite" are also popular tunes that the seasoned celtic listener will recognize. All in all, this is a magnificent recording, and I encourage you to not only buy this CD, but Bullock's and Kolodner's solo efforts as well. You will not be disappointed.
three great musicians...one great disc.......2000-11-11
This is a first rate recording by an excellent collection of musicians. The tunes vary greatly: from the rollicking sound of the set of reels and rants on the first track to the hauntingly spare and introspective "The Rolling Wave." Robin Bullock, Ken Kolodner and Laura Risk are each excellent musicians in their own right. Together on this recording they are magically enchanting. Mrs. Risk is one of the greatest fiddle players I've ever had the privilege of hearing. Her disc with Jacqueline Schwab (Celtic Dialogue) is a favorite of mine. This disc is just as impressive and fun to listen to. The track titled "First Light in the Mountains/The Open Road" is by itself more than worth the price of this disc. By the way...I also want to recommend Ken Kolodner's wonderful album "Walking Stones"--it is great too. This disc gets a high recommendation from me. I hope that you'll get a copy if you have the chance. There's plenty of great music here.

Highly Recommended.......2000-09-16
While at first wary of an all-string recording, I was quickly put at ease. The skill of the players and the mix of the instruments (guitar, cittern, piano, dulcimer, fiddle, and viola) makes listening to this recording rewarding. Many of Greenfire's tunes, particularly "The Cape Breton Fiddlers' Welcome to Shetland" and "Over the Moor to Maggie" are on my "Fiddle Tunes to Learn" list. Get this!

I wept..........2005-06-18
"Brilliant Sky, Infinite Sky" is wonderful; so is "Love Scenes;" but I bought this recording for the last piece, called "Morningsongs." The performance is incredible; the baritone soloist is one of the best I've heard. The piece is so full of passion and sadness and beauty that you will never forget it. I particularly love the middle movement called "Blue Animals." Kernis - a brilliant composer! - uses the chamber ensemble to its fullest capabilities, melding instrumental colors with vocal sounds and syllables to create a full and rich, yet intimate, texture. I checked this recording out at a university library and after hearing it immediately bought my own copy.

Open Window is a compilation of works cellist David Darling has previously released on Musical Massage projects for the Relaxation Company. Eight of its tracks are edited selections (between five to seven minutes each) of pieces Darling composed for Balance and In Tune, reflective instrumentals that originally ran 15-plus minutes. Fans of Darling's more abstract ECM releases may find these pieces here a touch too serene for their tastes, though Open Window is not exactly easy-listening music. Featuring an assortment of guest instrumentalists (on oboe, English horn, clarinet, flutes, percussion and piano), the disc's centerpiece is its overall texture, not simply Darling's cello, yielding a sort of melancholy mellowness that can elicit introspective daydreaming (or just nodding off). The opening three tracks, with understated rhythms and a slight Middle Eastern flavor, are the disc's high points, as the softer focus of subsequent tracks drift progressively closer to dreamland. --Terry Wood
Album Description
Maverick cellist David Darling shines on 'Open Window'. With an impressive cast of musicians, his exquisite compositions deftly combine New Age, Jazz, and World Music. Performances on acoustic and electric cello, piano, flutes, bass clarinet, marimba, guitars, and layered world percussion possess David's unique flare for spontaneous creativity and improvisation.
Customer Reviews:
Unusual jazzy, but not too sharp, more introverted and thoughtful.......2006-11-14
It is said that the best definition of classical music is that it
enters your brain with ease and leaves with difficulty...well this music
goes one better...it crawls under your skin, digs into your heart, and
settles down for a long winter's nap. In other words, it haunts.
If you're happier off the beaten path and stimulated by more than 3
chord tunes, this is for you.
I could dance to the tunes, or listen while drinking a glass of wine to contemplate the nature of reality, or imagine myself lying on a starlit
tropical beach..hearing the gentle jazzy sounds coming from a nearby
club. Its mysterious and lovely and sexy...and definitely memorable!
"remixed" is important.......2006-11-01
The "remixing" on this CD is not a minor tweak, but active changes the colors of the tracks. I have both the original "Musical Massage" CDs and this one contains tracks that are more like re-recordings of the tracks on the originals. The melodies are recognizable, but the overall balance of instruments has been changed, and in some cases the addition of cheesy new synth strings has occured. The tracks are still beautiful compositions, but they just don't sound like David Darling to me - more like some new-age compilation DJ's reinterpretation of what DD should sound like. Get the originals and luxuriate in some wonderful music.
A (gentle) reminder of why I don't like New Age music.......2003-10-14
It's just too static. I suppose I should've known. After all, Open Window's on The Relaxation Company label.
As the Amazon reviewer rightly points out, the first three selections, with their vague world-music vibe, are the best cuts. After that it's pretty much soporific time, until the last number, "Dream Pearls of Kathak," which reprises the sensibility of cuts 1-3.
The liner notes say this is a compilation disc: "Some of the tracks on Open Window come from David Darling's most acclaimed recordings. They have been remixed and re-edited exclusively for this compilation." It would've been nice if that information had been printed on the exposed back of the jewel box instead of on the inside liner notes. That way customers would be enabled to make a more informed buying decision. Also, since only "some of the tracks" come from previous recordings, it would be nice to know which ones come from which discs, and which ones are new. I for one would very much like to own an entire album of Darling's more world-jazz numbers, if such a thing exists.
As it is, the middle six cuts are enough to put one to sleep. And that's NOT what I'm looking for in music. Five stars for cuts 1,2,3, and 10. One star for the rest.
Must Have!.......2003-04-26
"Open Window" for some reason at this point has been flying under the radar, with no critics reviews, and hardly in any major musical retail stores.
I hope and I pray this will not be for long.
This is not an original studio release from David.
"Some of the tracks on "Open Window" come from David Darling's most acclaimed Recordings. They have been remixed and re-edited exclusively for this complilation" ( as found in the liner notes)
The "Acclaimed Recordings" it suggests are from David's
Musical Massage series "Balance" and Intune"
The songs are reduced in time, and have been remixed to enchance only slightly a variation from the original songs.
With the average song length at about 5 and a half minutes long.
I dare not say that "Open Window" is compilation of David's Greatest hits, but contain in this reviewers opinion, the best of what made me a David Darling fan as I believe I am.
I recommend this Cd with the very belief that, David is wholey original in his musical endeavures.
This music is Meditative, at times romantic, and always compelling to the listening ear.
Like Musical Massage, it captures every ounce of meaning, in non-lyrical beliefs that instrumental cd's help to relax the attitude of everyday complexities.
I am not sure if "Little Miss Blue Eyes" is a new song, it does not say in the liner notes, but this song alone is worth the buy if you're waiting to hear something fresh from David since "Cello Blue"
I think "Open Window" is a must have even if your not familiar with any of Davids Previous work.
As far as new age music goes, buy this CD. And if you like it, buy David's "Musical Massage" series, "Intune" and Balance" where you can have most of these songs played to the average length of over 17 minutes each song.
