Having long since shed their image as hip-hop's clown princes, the Beastie Boys now bring what feels like their emeritus recording, a celebratory instrumental memoir of all of the influences (except punk) that brought them to their secure place among hip-hop's fickle elite. The party opens with the aptly titled "B for My Name," its plodding bounce staking claim to the mid-tempo path the album treads almost throughout. "14th St. Break" picks up the pace, especially in the auxiliary percussion breakdown, complete with rally whistle. Then, beginning with "Suco de Tangerina," the album drops into a deep groove cut from dub- and dancehall-tinged ostinati that carry through a full third of its tracks. Among these, "The Gala Event" suffers from a lack of developmental motion that characterizes many of these tracks, but highlights still abound. "Off the Grid," for example, departs from the otherwise unbreakable chill and rips the proceedings wide open, blooming again and again in a series of pulsing riffs that celebrate the very institution of the instrumental groove. More than 20 years since Licensed to Ill took a long, irreverent piss into the mainstream, it seems you can still fight for your right to party. --Jason Kirk

The Mix-Up is Beastie Boys' first-ever full album of all-new instrumental material. The follow-up to 2004's To The 5 Boroughs, The Mix-Up features Diamond, Horovitz and Yauch back on drums, guitar and bass, with able assistance from Keyboard Money Mark and percussionist Alfredo Ortiz, on 12 brand new wordless, sample-less, scratchless originals. Sure to please fans of the instrumental cuts from Check Your Head and Ill Communication and the cult hit compilation album made up largely of those tracks, The In Sound From Way Out!, The Mix-Up finds NYC's favorite sons drawing on one of their arsenal's primary strengths and pushing it into bold new directions.

5 out of 5 stars Beasties are Back.......2007-08-04

Off the charts outstanding! The Boys have mastered their instrumental stylings, and have created an amazing cornicopia of sound. Far more advanced than earlier instrumentals that were wooven through out various albums, or collected on 'In sounds from way out'. If you dig this side of the Beasties, you need not dig any further!

5 out of 5 stars the beastie boys have done it again.......2007-07-30

a lot of people are basing this album on from their prevous popular albums like check your head, hello nasty (my favorite), 5 boroughs, ect. but there are a lot of ignorant people out there and dont realize that they have already made an album with just instruments called the in sound from the way out. and it was excellent and so was this album. put it on and just sit back and chill to it. the beastie boys do a great job mixing it up, which is one of the reasons why i love the beastie boys and one of the reasons why they are my all time favorite! its all about the music, a good band can make music with lyrics but a great group can produce music without lyrics. this album has been everything i have asked for, if you loved anything from the beastie boys, im sure you will love this. i know i did!

2 out of 5 stars Skip it.......2007-07-30

I would say if you are new to the band you might find this appealing. For me it was not the same as past musical experiences I had in listening to albums of the past, including several that came after the famous "Licensed to Ill" which I have heard is one of Capitol Records all-time best selling albums. This CD left me frustrated as I did not feel there was very much creativity at all. As they say; "to each his own" but I personally felt this CD was a letdown.

1 out of 5 stars Poor.......2007-07-28

Picked this up, was so excited, first song...all insturmental...i was like ya cool, i dig, then next song...no lyrics, all the way through the 12 tracks. very dissapointed, sure the mysic is good, but thats not what makes the beastie boys the beastie boys. if you are eager to listen then give the sample on amazon a quick listen, chances are that is all you will need

4 out of 5 stars Chill Background.......2007-07-27

The Beasties are always giving the people what they want. They may not know they want it but after you get it, you realize you needed it. This is one of those records. It's not anything ground-breaking but it is just what you'd expect form an all instrumental (that's right, no lyrics) record from them. This record is great to chill to or have on the background of any get-together. It takes you right back to the instrumental songs of Check Your Head and Ill Communication records but is totally all brand new music. Nothing here appears on their The In Sound From The Way Out Album but it is similar in it's construction. I enjoyed The Mix-Up and I hope you do too.

There's no better example of American pop culture's hall-of-mirrors ethos than producer Alan Carr's relentlessly buoyant 1978 film adaptation of the stage musical Grease. Inspired by that decade's rampant 50's nostalgia, it now paradoxically evokes the campy 70's excesses that spawned it. That sense of recycled decades in collision is underscored repeatedly on this deluxe, double-disc Grease-fest, especially on the set's second disc of bonus materials that spans vintage singles of the title track (its instrumental B-side) and "Greased Lightnin'," some sing-along karaoke tracks, and a handful of alternately slick/techo-savvy remixes (originally produced for the film's 20th anniversary) that are testament to its enduring, era-defying appeal. The original soundtrack itself has been treated to a stellar digital remastering that fills disc one, and remains a joyous monument to camp, sheer ambition, and exuberant nostalgic illusions. Includes a slip-cased, double-fold-out case and new booklet with complete song lyrics. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars You 're The One That I Want.......2007-04-03

The complete Grease experience. This cd is a two disc-set with disc one being the complete soundtrack, while disc two is all bonus material including the popular Grease Megamix. Fans of the movie would want to make this cd an essential part of their music collection.

5 out of 5 stars Prepare to be transported to Summer Nights.......2006-03-26

Well here we are with a great piece of history.

This album has not only captured the spirit of the movie but the essence of a 1970's version of the 1950's. I have seen this play live and yes some things are different. Yet I grew up on the movie. I even find myself singing some of the songs now and then. Of course you will never see me singing "Look At Me, I'm Sandra Dee." However I do keep this in my car as great driving music. This album is not you can pick apart and say things like missing songs, in the wrong order etc. It sounds and feels just right. There will be many versions yet this one is the Grease - Deluxe Edition [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED] [SOUNDTRACK] gives you more information about each of the tracks allowing you to feel that you have inside information and to feel that you know more of what went into the making of each song.

5 out of 5 stars Great Soundtrack & Fun Extras from an Enduring Musical........2004-07-06

I'm enjoying listening to this great soundtrack that I loved as a child after a long hiatus. I had it on 8-track 25 years ago. So it's fitting that I should get the 25th Anniversary Edition on CD. The 24 songs from the movie are just as everyone remembers them, so I'll talk about the Bonus Disc, which contains 10 alternative versions of the songs plus 2 previously unreleased instrumentals from the film.

Track 1 on the Bonus Disc is an instrumental version of the film's theme, "Grease", written and produced by Barry Gibb. Frankie Valli's voice has been replaced by a saxophone. The chorus is vocal, but the voices are not those in the original song. You could use this as a sing-along version, as it would be easy to sing over the sax. Tracks 2-5 are officially sing-along versions. "Summer Nights" includes the chorus vocals from the film and sounds good. "You're the One That I Want" has new chorus vocals of questionable merit. "Sandy" is a new arrangement. It's not as good as the film version, but you can sing along. Track 6 is the single version of "Greased Lightning" that you may have heard on the radio back in the day. It's differs from the original in that the bad words have been replaced for radio airplay. Tracks 7-8 are previously unreleased instrumentals from the film. "Greased Up and Ready to Go" is lively. Tracks 9-10 are mixes that I occasionally hear on the radio. The "Grease Megamix" and the "Grease Dream Mix" are fun, if awkward. Tracks 11-12 are Martian Remixes of "Summer Nights" and "You're the One That I Want". They retain the original vocals, but set them to a Latin rhythm. They make pretty good dance tracks.

This 2-disc set isn't in a jewel case. The case is paperboard with 4 panels that fold out. This is inside of a clear vinyl slip case on which the tracks are written. This isn't convenient packaging. On the bright side, the case won't crack in the mail. Tucked inside one of the panels is a booklet that contains lyrics and credits.

The "Grease: 25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition" is a terrifically fun soundtrack to one of the all-time great movie musicals. And for all those preteen girls who go wild over the movie with each new generation, the bonus material is perfect for parties and horsing around.

3 out of 5 stars If You Love Grease, You'll Love This - Only 1 Major Flaw.......2004-05-15

Disc 1 is like the original album, which I also own. 1 major flaw is that "Love Is A Many Splendored Thing" cuts off at the very end of it! I was upset by this, hence the 3 stars instead of 4. Disc 2 is a lot of fun w/some remixes and sing-a-longs, all in all, I'm pretty happy with it being that I'm a HUGE Grease fan. If you like Grease, you'll love this, it's fun. Too bad when they "remastered" it, they didn't catch there 1 mistake. Oh well, at least I have it on another album.

Album Description

'Whisperings' is a 'best of' collection of fan favorites from David Nevue's first four albums, 'The Vigil,' 'The Last Waking Moment,' 'While the Trees Sleep' and 'The Tower.'

An Excerpt from the Linear Notes...

"With a piano style somewhere between Chopin and George Winston, David Nevue brings melody and heart back to instrumental music. His neoclassical piano stylings reflect his wide musical influences - Clannad, Chopin, Pink Floyd, Rachmaninoff, Renaissance, George Winston and Rush. David's music also reflects his love of literature, quoting numerous influences from C.S. Lewis to The Bible.

David's artistry is demonstrated not only in his music, but in his thematic approach to each album. Rather than creating collections of unrelated compositions, David treats each individual work as but one chapter in a much bigger story that stirs the imagination and carries the listener to a gratifying conclusion."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Whisperings the Best.......2007-02-05

I stumbled onto David Nevue's piano work while surfing the web. This CD is a compilation of (I presume) some of the best compositions from his other CDs. Whisperings is absolutely stunning and outstanding. Unlike a lot of New Age music where you hear it once and then you move on, David's original works tend to stay with you. The melodies are really quite intricate and his playing is superb. I guess the finest compliment I could offer up for this CD is that my 16 year old daughter (who can switch between rock stations on my car radio faster than a speeding bullet) mentioned to me the other day "Hey Dad, this music is really, really nice to listen to!" Enough said.

5 out of 5 stars Simply said - Excellent.......2005-10-03

I need not say anymore as the previous few reviews have done justice to it. Simply put, this is an excellent Piano player, composer. His songs are deeply touching and moving. I enjoy listening to it whenever i feel the need to relax. It is highly recommended by me.

5 out of 5 stars from Solo Piano Publications.......2003-06-17

"Whisperings" is a "best of" collection of fifteen piano solos from David Nevue's first four albums (1985-2000) and two previously unreleased pieces. Nevue's playing and composing styles are pensive and deeply personal, but communicate clearly to the listener in a gentle musical language. Often thoughtful and introspective, Nevue's work tends to be positive without being sugary, and reflects the strength as well as the surrender of profound faith. Nevue occasionally polls his listeners from his website about what their favorite pieces are, and such a poll was done to help in the selection of which pieces to include in this collection (similar polls are done from time to time to help decide which pieces to release in sheet music form). The four albums that are represented are "The Tower" (1992), "While the Trees Sleep" (1995), "The Last Waking Moment" (1997), and "The Vigil" (2000). Although the pieces are not in chronological order, it is very interesting to hear how this artist has developed over the years. Most of the selections are original compositions, but a few are arrangements; those are "A Turn to Grace," which evolves into a lovely setting of "Amazing Grace," "I Wonder As I Wander" by John Jacob Niles, and the classic hymn "Be Thou My Vision." A few of my own favorites are "No More Tears," "The Vigil," "Psalm 77," "Ascending With Angels," and "The Night Season." If you are new to David Nevue's work, this is an outstanding introduction. If you have his previously released albums, this is a really nice "cream of the crop" collection.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Kept Secret.......2003-04-29

I ran across David Nevue by accident while surfing the net late one evening. After listening to his free mp3 downloads, I purchased all of his CD's. This particular CD is a compilation of his greatest hits. I recommend this CD for your collection. You will not be disappointed. It is outstanding! The music is excellent. David Nevue is the best kept secret in contemporary piano music today. Buy the CD and you'll see what I mean!

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2003-04-28

I've been enjoying David Nevue's music for years. I'm thrilled to see that he's now showing up on Billboard's chart.

4 out of 5 stars A quick dose of roots reggae in punklike form........2007-03-13

This is a seminal album one that transferred well to the punk scene in London and helped influence the Clash the pistols and others. Its pure roots reggae but alittle slicker and shorter- and includes the stunner Soul Rebel. This album is quick and propulsive- with most songs dancing around the 3 minute mark at true Jamaican pace but seems to blow by despite being 11 or 12 tracks. Im not implying that the songs are fast at all- its the spirit and the mixing of the songs down to an almost poplike form instead of six minute mantras. Great vocals great tunes and relevant lyrics make this a must own for all reggae fans especially considering this is a classic among the last dying days of the height of reggae-Bom MArley excluded. The cover captures the mood at the time not only in Kingston but in London as well. A must have!

5 out of 5 stars great album.......2004-08-04

excellent album to add to any collection. sweet tunes and heavy rhythms. always a steady reggae beat and strong rhthym 'chink'. everyone likes this album, no cheese anywhere on it.

5 out of 5 stars Crucial Reggae.......2004-04-14

At times I just laugh at the harmony these guys lay down, at first listen it sounds downright out of key. So you wonder why I would rate it so high? This album is soulfull, sweet reggae at its best, the more you listen the more you groove. You cant help but love it for its sincerity and innocence. HIGH on my list of must haves.

4 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2003-12-21

Great album, my only complaint is that it's a little short. Excellent beats, catchy tunes, great vocals... i definitely recommend this one. Even if you haven't heard of the Gladiators before, their sound is right up there with other much more famous reggae bands.

5 out of 5 stars A reggae masterpiece! Simply Essential!.......2002-10-08

In the late 1980's I purchased The Gladiator's LP "On the Right Track". Big mistake. I did not like this album as I thought it was weak and irritating. The result was that for 10+ years I stayed away from The Gladiators all together. Another big mistake. I finally bought "Trenchtown Mix Up" after reading the review in the Rough Guide, and I have since been kicking myself for ignoring it all this time. Every song is perfect and the musical backing and production by Prince Tony is stunning. A cornerstone reggae album on par with The Congos "Heart of the Congos", Sylford Walker's "Lambsbread" and Burning Spear's "Marcus Garvey". A perfect, hard driving, rootsy mix of the heroic and the spiritual.

Off the charts outstanding. The Boys have mastered their instrumental stylings, and have created an amazing cornicopia of sound. Far more advanced than earlier instrumentals that were wooven throughout various albums, or collected on 'In sounds from way out'. If you dig this side of the Beasties, you need not dig any further!

5 out of 5 stars Not a single bad song!.......2006-07-01

I first heard Steve Carlson sing when he performed "Pinata Novia" live with Christian Kane in the UK. I had purchased that CD and was immediately intrigued - from one song. I started searching the net for more music and found his MySpace page, the Steve Carlson Band MySpace page, his personal site and his band website.

His music has a lot of different influences, including a number of 70's bands. You may be expecting a muddled blend of musical styles, but that's not the case. He's received great reviews from several music magazines for his work.

I downloaded the album (yes, legally! He's available on several legal music-sharing programs, including iTunes.) and I loved it so much, I want the physical CD as well.

My favorite song is still "Pinata Novia", but the title song "Spot in the Corner" is a heart-breaker as well. *WELL* worth the purchase price!

      5 out of 5 stars Awsome Band!.......2006-04-18

I saw this band in a private concert and they were awsome. they were so down to earth like and just bonded amazingly. There CD is even better! You should listen for yourself!

4 out of 5 stars Rockin' good fun.......2006-03-11

I got to see these guys live when the CD came out and it was a rockin' good time. There was some amazing talent on the stage. The vocals are a bit like Blues Traveler or Hootie and the Blowfish, to give a more current reference, but it could also sound at home on a classic rock station. It's hard to pin down but fun to listen to. There's a good mix of fast and slow, hard and soft, and backing it all is some great instrumentation. Half the time the bass player is playing electric, and half the time it's upright acoustic, and it is like nothing you'd see at the symphony! Check out the title track for a sample.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great industrial music.......2005-07-31

Mix Up is one of my favourite Cabaret Voltaire releases, and there is no doubt that it is an industrial record in the vein of Throbbing Gristle. However, unlike Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret Voltaire did not focus as much in unrecognisable noise and strange tapeloops as they did on playing their own weird breed of industrial: distorted guitar lines on the background, constant basslines, early rythm boxes gone insane and scary vocals. The atmosphere they bring up is really cool, and dark, on this album. An early industrial classic - recommended.

5 out of 5 stars THE most inspirational soundtrack.......2004-05-20

Cabaret Voltaire's Mix Up, was one of the most inspirational music I found at the time. Once I heard this, it opened up the love for 'the other side of music'. The choreography of sounds and rhythms creating a view of its own. Yes, like a soundtrack. The distorted sounds in the music gives it a rough edge, but beauty is certainly there aswell. To me it was the most inspiring music to start Super 8 filming at the time. Once I put on this Mix Up and Voice of America, the images bubbled up, and has been put on film (later used together with other experimental/industrial bands and was a start off for me working with modern dance choreographers). This music is so strong, that you will be in a Cabaret Voltaire mood for a while...at least for the day. Since music from the 80's is still a hobby and a life-style to me, Cabaret Voltaire is still looking after me. They made such great records in the early 80's that I can recommend the newbies to start just here, and...please get the groove and the images of Cabaret Voltaire! It is also a perfect soundtrack for any mute tv-series or film on tv. Just put the record on and the sound from tv low or off...and you automatically start to wonder what the actors are actually on about. It all starts to look so cynically hilarious from the soundtrack point of view, that you never stop wondering about it. I shared this and 'entertained' a few friends of mine this way, it becoming great steamy evenings. Have it your way though ! But it IS a five star record, it 100% is !! Make it worthwhile.

4 out of 5 stars There are no reviews for this yet?.......2003-08-04

If you're even looking at the Cabaret Voltaire offerings [on the site], for whatever reason (Fischerspooner got compared to them, you were researching the dada movement, customers who bought Nine Inch Nails also bought this CD, et alia), you need this CD in your collection. These boys were the genesis of the sound that legions of followers would mutate into a myriad of directions that you know and love -- techno, industrial, breakbeat, goth -- and this album will take you to amazing places. Play it in the dark, or set your television between channels and watch the static with "Mix-Up" in the background. Have kinky jaded ... and put this on repeat on your CD player. Paint your windows and appliances matte black or sickly green and blare this as your soundtrack.

Given 4 stars only because this band would surpass this effort with "Red Mecca". You should have that one too, but one step at a time if you're not among the industrial Illuminati.
