5 out of 5 stars Living history.......1999-07-31

So shoot me. I like bagpipe music and I like fife and drum recordings and I like brass bands. Recently cruisin' the Internet brought me to the website of a company called Summit Records out in Arizona; and my eye was caught by the title (DCD 126) with a group calling itself The Americus Brass Band. I obtained a copy post haste and I want to all to know about it with equal rapidity. There is just short of 55 minutes of Civil War tunes played in a style that is "historically accurate, right down to the high military pitch and the clicking of the rotary valves on the original antique instruments employed" (as the notes tell us). The history of the band is available in those notes, so let me just dwell on the "music that still produces feelings of humor, joy, sadness, and patriotic pride." Well, what music does not produce at least one of those?--and I am not entirely sure there was anything about the Civil War of which we on either side should be particularly proud. But Sing a Song of Suffering seems to be an eternal way of making the best of a rotten situation during war time; and this CD is replete with such memories as "Tenting Tonight," "Amazing Grace," "Woodman, Spare That Tree," and even a little bit of the "William Tell Overture" and a Meyerbeer opera! In short, this is not the expected line up of soldier songs but selections that are "typical of that which might have been played by a group such as the Americus Brass band." I love it. Give it a try, please.

Album Description

If RUN-DMC are the Beatles of rap music, Public Enemy are surely its Rolling Stones. This is studio album #10, they've sold millions of records, and their songs have become part of history, jargon, and culture. New Whirl Odor has followed that Public Enemy tradition in trendsetting, while never repeating themselves. "Bring That Beat Back," "Revolution," "Preaching to the Quiet," and "Superman's Black in the Building" are tracks also coupled with videos on the accompanying DVD.

4 out of 5 stars Rap Masters Return At (Near) Full Strength!.......2006-10-25

The patented sound of rap mega stars Public Enemy has always been one of intense anger and frustration. On the group's newest album, their tenth, that sound finds new ways of releasing the pent-up reservoir of disillusionment that lead rapper Chuck D embodies.

The atmosphere of most of the tracks is dense and noisy, as is usual for PE. However, this album contains tracks like "Bring That Beat Back" and "Makes You Blind", which feature calm enough arrangements to be possible hits in today's rap music scene, while still keeping enough of the hard-core sound that the group is so well known for.

Chuck's lyrics can be a bit confounding and sometimes it sounds as if the ideas covered in one song are all over the place and un-focused; instead of hitting upon one topic per song, for example, he may hit upon ten. Also, surprisingly, there are no songs from humorous side-kick Flavor Flav this time out, but Professor Griff (once kicked out of the group before being reinstated years later) gets a chance on the mic with guest spots on two tracks as well as his own song, "Y'all Don't Know".

"MKLVFKWR" features an intense, exhilarating beat constructed by Moby and powerful, vehement lyrics from Chuck which call out desperately for world peace. It is the type of song for which Public Enemy initially became famous, and it's message and non-stop sonic assault are so invigorating, it forces you to get up and pump your fist in the air.

DJ Lord Aswod has filled the position which Terminator X used to occupy, and he does so very admirably. Listen to his technically amazing scratch work on "Preaching to the Quiet" and "Check What You're Listening To".

The album ends up with "Superman's Black in the Building", an almost 12- minute long odyssey put together in a format which is new for the group. Overall, the exciting beats and angry, yet intelligent lyrics win you over- especially when you consider the low artistic quality of so much of other hip-hop music being released today.

Public Enemy is back! They have returned with an album so good that it nearly equals the artistic heights they achieved with their classics, "It Takes a Nation..." and "Fear of a Black Planet".

3 out of 5 stars It's not too shabby..........2006-10-13

The strongest tracks are "Bring That Beat Back", "MKLVFKWR", "Revolution", and "Superman's Black In The Building". That Instrumental track #9 is tight and I wish Chuck woulda used it for an actual song. Track 4 I coulda done without and 6 and 7 I think kinda weakened the CD right smack dab in the middle - for me anyway. Track 12 is ok but not much replay value for me personally... but the rest is decent.
It's nowhere near as remarkable as "Nation of Millions...", "Fear of a Black Planet" or "Apocalpyse '91"... I don't even think it's as good as "There's a Poison Goin On". Still, you will probably like this CD if you want some political music and aren't tired of the lame play on words thing ("New Whirl Odor"? C'mon now...)

2 out of 5 stars Public Enemy Digress Into Late Career Irrelevance & Laziness.......2006-04-15

For about the last 15 years PE's output has been fairly sporadic and uneven. I suppose it would be an unfair expectation for PE to maintain the peerless qualitative apex of their best albums: It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, Fear of A Black Planent, and (to a lesser extent) Apocalypse 91... The Enemy Strikes Black - albums so powerful and influential it would be almost impossible to overstate their importance. Since 1992 they've made a few competent, but unspectacular albums that either recycle their best work [There's a Poison Goin' On (1999)], or emulate more contemporary rap productions [He Got Game (1998)]. New Whirl Odor is an album where PE seem dimished to dull antiquity status.

Most PE album titles since Apocalypse 91 have been pop culture derived puns, but New Whirl Odor is their first album that is just as cheesy as it's title. During their peak, PE's music was characterized by an abundance of complex, cogent ideas: An album like Fear of Black Planet has so many sonic and lyrical facets you can listen to it numerous times and still find something new. Contrarily, NWO is characterized by a more simple, single or dual layered production a la Dre/Eminem, but lacking their creativity and vibrance. While the mix contains many musical elements of peak-era PE (voice samples from prominent black leaders, shards of urban noise, etc.) it becomes evident early on that producers Johnny Juice and Abnormal have limited, repetitive tools they apply to virtually every song. Consequently, the production is facile, hollow, and becomes tedious after the first few tracks.

Thematically, PE is just as weary. To be fair PE lyrics have always served as propaganda, but on their best work Chuck D was among the most formidable rappers and potent wordsmiths ever to hold a mic, capable of making the most white-bread suburbanite appreciate his afrocentrism. But on NWO even Chuck seems weary to the point that his lyrics and delivery sound like jingles more than compelling agitprop. Not only are his lyrics ineffective, but he rallies against all the same foes he's targeted for the past 20 years: the media, Bush (sr or jr), institutionalized racism... whatever the topic, his lyrics are generic, and his delivery just isn't inspired to enough to put them over.

Maybe NWO is the type of album we should have expected from PE. At this stage of their career music seems tangential: Chuck D hosts a weekly radio program on Air America, while Flavor Flav hosts a pitiful reality show on VH1. Still, it's a huge disappointment from a band who has made some of the most powerful, innovative popular music of all time, especially at a time when pop culture (and rap in particular) desperately needs an entity like PE to serve as a counterpoint to the waning megalomaniacal 'bling-bling' culture that currently dominates hip-hop. Instead we get an empty, lethargic album from a band that seems unconcerned with how irrelevant they've become.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent performer.......2007-03-09

This plates are wonderful. I was charmed, and when I close my eyes now, I see scenes with American in Paris or Porgy and Bess but my favorite piece of music is Rhapsody in Blue. It's more than excellent is fantastic. Jack Gibbons perfectly feels the unique tone Gershwin's music, the mixture rythms of jazz with influences of impressionists and clear and beauty melodies.
I'm fascinating.

5 out of 5 stars A unique project.......2006-11-23

Gibbons' undertaking is unique: to reconstruct and then execute and record the note-for-note playing of Gershwin as documented on the composers' piano rolls, sound recordings and certain published arrangements. I agree with the reviewer who points out that the result is like a library and not a recital you sit back and listen to (or get up and dance to). In fact Gibbons does some editing of his "library" now and then, and clearly documents it in his liner notes: in some reconstructions he augments accompaniment effects and even the melodic line itself. I don't mind that at all, especially as Gibbons scrupulously accounts for such tampering in his liner notes; but it seems to me that it is in this area of "tampering" that Gibbons the artist is asserting himself...which of course undermines the "library", the "historical archive": you have to search and read a bit to find out when you're hearing only Gershwin and when you're hearing some added Gibbons. I don't mind; Gibbons is a remarkable artist in his own right, not merely an impeccable documentarian. For sheer generosity of production Gibbons' Gershwin must also be unique: 4 cd's, scholar-level liner notes (yes, you need a magnifying glass to read them), and rock-bottom bargain price.

5 out of 5 stars Gershwin historical, manic, perfect, archival.......2006-06-12

First: this is 4 high-end produced cd's (in low-end jewel cases) for the price of 2. The liner notes of all 4 cd's are condensed in a booklet of microscopic print, so you may need to spend the savings on a magnifying glass. MONEY WELL SPENT.
Second: Jack Gibbons plays (and has recorded) the Alkan op 39 etudes (he probably plays a lot more Alkan than that). For those of you not in the know, this is to say he has world-class chops, indeed history-class (Liszt, who never played his friend Alkan, at least in public). But it's also to say that Gibbons knows how to interpret and personalize fantastically difficult piano music. For me, his Alkan op 39 is personal and passionate and real (contrast the facile and over-pedalled Hamelin and the just-the-notes-ma'me Ringeissen). An appreciation of Gibbons' Alkan is important here because while his Alkan is uniquely personal (as such music must be, no matter how hard it is to play) his Gershwin is deliberately impersonal...which is to say: no pianist, no singer would want to reproduce what Gibbons has given us in these 4 cd's, and in fact few listeners will be able to listen for long to these 4 cd's without a respite, a break , some silence, some minimal styling from somebody (anybody) else...which brings me to
Third: This is an archive, not a recital. This is a library, not a program. There is no track-by-track contrast of moods here, no track-by-track concession to easy listening, varied delight, any more than a library shelf of novels is alphabetized by authors' last names as a concession to mood or fancy or taste of the searching patron. This is the documented Gershwin in his recording mode: manic, notey, clever, "on", and never, as generations of stylists found in him, ravishing, tender, longing, sweet, glad, hopeful...person-to-person, in a word. I can listen to these cd's about half an hour at a time, max. This is Gerwhsin, not Gibbons. And this is just one side of Gershwin. He died at 38, in the summer. Brain tumor. A lot of pain.
Finally, Jack Gibbons has given the world a uniquely valuable and easily available resource. Gibbons could now do us a service by playing us some Gershwin as he feels it, as it hits him and makes him sing (as Gershwin, our American Schubert, does to all of us, and as I think Alkan has done to Gibbons). I would love to see a Gershwin stylings by Gibbons now that Gibbons himself has made sure Gershwin in his authenticity is safe and sound.

5 out of 5 stars Definative.......2005-07-23

Here's the whole Gershwin catalog at a great price... Five plus hours of bliss. Definately five stars!

Gibbons, according to a family friend and biographer Edward jablonski "recreates Gershwin's style." I'll never know. I can say this is a lively recording and has the perfect balance. It's neither stuffy and plodding or cute.

5 out of 5 stars Endless Laughter!.......2002-04-17

Children love music, especially music they can relate to! Our 1 year old daughter can't get enough of Sue's music. The minute she hears the first song, she begins to dance and sing. She especially loves the hearing the voices of the little kids on the recording. A very upbeat album with manys songs our children will grow up with. Great gift for a baby shower as well!

5 out of 5 stars Great music for Toddlers.......2002-04-17

You'll find yourself humming these tunes throughout the day. The CD is filled with short, simple and fun songs your young child will learn quickly. What a terrific introduction to music!

5 out of 5 stars A's Mom.......2002-04-15

This is a very upbeat, easy to comprehend and enjoyable CD for your children and yourself.

We have been going to music classes with Sue since my daughter was 10 mos. old (she is now 2). I finally bought the CD to enjoy the music at home and in the car. It has strengthened my daughter's love of music and dancing.

If you want to sing and dance with your children, we highly recommend this CD.

5 out of 5 stars a minivan favorite.......2002-04-09

Sue Schnitzer's Wiggle and Whirl CD is a definite favorite with our 3 daughters! Our youngest, age 3, runs the show when it comes to selecting songs during family outings in the minivan and "Wiggle and Whirl" is always on the request list. The songs on the CD are a combination of traditional (e.g., Old MacDonald) and original childrens' songs and geared mostly towards the under 6 year olds. All the lyrics are easy to learn -- okay, so the 3 year old still doesn't pronounce everything right -- and the instrumentals backing up the voices (both adult and children!) are a delight for the parents, too!

5 out of 5 stars Another great kids CD by Sue Schnitzer.......2005-08-01

Sue Schnitzer's new CD, Wiggle and Whirl and Clap and Nap has lots of the same sunny qualities that make her other recordings (Wiggle and Whirl, Boo, Cackle, Trick or Treat) a welcome choice for parents and children. Sue's voice is easy to understand and her young friends that sing along with her are clearly having fun. Even if you don't know the songs to begin with, you're soon singing along yourself. The musical pace slows down as the CD comes to a close, making it a good choice to play before naptime for little ones. Kids love to sing along with Sue.

    5 out of 5 stars A Real Find!.......2003-08-20

This CD was released in about 1992 but somehow I'd never run across it. I was interested because Jack Gibbons is a pianist I very much admire, primarily for his superb 2CD recording of the minor key études of Alkan, the kind of music that makes even piano virtuosos have nightmares because of their difficulty. One thing I noted in Gibbons's Alkan release was his loose and easy sense of rhythm. So, thought I, maybe he can do Gershwin the way he was meant to be played. And sure enough, he can and does.

These are mostly recreations from the piano roll elaborations that Gershwin recorded himself. Unfortunately the technology at the time Gershwin made them was fairly primitive and it created a kind of rhythmic strait-jacket for his playing. So what Gibbons has done is play the same notes Gershwin played, but subtly free the rhythms so that they sound spontaneous. And do they!

The CD includes a solo piano version of 'Rhapsody in Blue' based on Gershwin's own two-piano arrangement. Also recorded is the slow movement from the 'Concerto in F.' Both are done beautifully.

There is a dynamite performance of 'I'd Rather Charleston,' a tune hardly remembered today. And then there's Gershwin's own patented version (here perfectly mimicked) of 'Fascinating Rhythm.' And on and on.

This is 67 minutes of sheer joy!

5 out of 5 stars An Ambitious Interpretation of Gershwin's Pianism.......2002-02-25

Jack Gibbons does a remarkable job in performing his transcriptions of Gershwin's works -- TOO remarkable that is. Each track easily displays Gibbons' technical gifts as a pianist but this is the rare case where it actually works against him. Listen to the original recordings of Gershwin himself playing these works of his and you'll see how EASILY the music flows whereas Gibbons' performance projects that "hard-work" atmosphere; you can hear Gibbons concentrating more on playing everything exactly "right" instead of having plain, flat-out fun. This is not surprising considering Gershwin's pianistic style was shaped by the free-wheeling, Harlem stride-piano masters whereas Gibbons was no doubt a classically-trained pianist where typically each and every single note must be played with proper dynamics and tempo (Gershwin didn't vary his dynamics nor tempo as often as many believe). Still, Jack Gibbons' "The Authentic George Gershwin" series is hands-down the best window into the artistry of George Gershwin's piano playing style. High praise should be given to Gibbons for not "watering-down" Gershwin's piano pieces (like so many have before) and making a recording for anyone who admires Gershwin as a composer as well as a magnificent pianist.

5 out of 5 stars Authentic is a misused word, but this time it really applies.......1999-02-11

I have a huge Gershwin collection accumulated over 40 years and know all this music cold. But I've never heard it played better. I think George himself would smile to hear Gibbons. Unlike the perfect--and bloodless--Gershwin renditions of Michael Feinstein, this one truly captures the spirit of the music. It takes the old Gershwin piano roll renditions with their mechanical rhythm and gives them life. Here, you'll hear hundreds of small variations and Gershwinesque riffs you've never heard before, even if you know this music as well as I do.

    5 out of 5 stars Terrific!.......2005-05-31

It's too bad that Matt Keating has always had such a difficult time finding an audience. His song-writing is superb and his vocals and music make you feel what he was writing about. If you are a fan of Matt Keating or just getting into his stuff, you will love the haunting feel to "Jacksonville," by far my favorite on the record. Other favorites are "Man Overboard," "Sunday Song," "The Executioner," "Successful," and "Believe It." Great piece of Americana for your soul.

5 out of 5 stars the music of the soul.......2003-03-20

I have been a long time fan of Matt Keating. On CD after CD, he consistently makes beautiful music that breathes with life and leaves you feeling altered for having heard it. The naked, raw emotions in it will leave you dizzy. He's hands down one of the most exciting singer-songwriters I have had the honor of knowing, both musically and personally. If you feel like something is missing from the music you listen to, if you earn for something your heart and soul can mesh with, if you are seeking out truth in music, then Matt Keating is the man for you. Even if you aren't looking for these things, he's still an amazing lyricist who can turn phrases better than most songwriters i know. In short, he's amazing. Check him out.

    4 out of 5 stars Great talent.......2002-12-03

Matt Keating is a great talent, and deserves to be known better, as much as Robyn Hitchcock, for example (but is Robyn Hitchcock well known?). "Tilt A Whirl" is his fourth album, after "Tell It To Yourself", "Scaryarea" and "Killjoy". Produced by Gary Maurer (member of the pop/americana band Hem), "Tilt A Whirl" first appeared in Europe last year. In fourteen songs, Matt Keating is really convincing, with solid compositions and a perfect warm voice in the line of Robyn Hitchcock or John Lennon ("Not Today" reminds of "Working Class Hero"). "Sunday Song", "Jacksonville" and "Bad Things Will Happen" are instant "hits" to my ears, even if they're not up-tempo ("Jacksonville" is even very sad). Energy is here as well with "Man Overboard" and "As Bad As It Lasts", while "Float Away", "It's A Shame" and "Beautiful" make a very comfortable listen, though the album isn't richly arranged. With such a good material of songwriting, I believe this album could have been "a must" if it had been more arranged, with more instruments. I'm afraid only fans of pop singer-songwriters will consider this record as a keeper - which it is, at any rate. This is a record for perceptive listeners :o)
