The sounds for this series were recorded in 3D by Chuck Plaisance. His recording system is designed to simulate human hearing, using a binaural head microphone to capture depth, height, width, as well as directional movement. I bought this CD because I didn't really know which type of sound I'd relax most too be it ocean, rain, forest, etc. Well I love all the sounds on this sampler, and I play it every night. My hubby says that 20 mins into the CD there's a rooster crowing, but I wouldn't know because by that time I'm already fast asleep. Great stuff!

This excellent compilation of 20 different Nature Sound albums was out of print, but is now finally available again through ONLY NEW AGE MUSIC(repackaged and remastered). This album creates a journey through different Nature scenes all recorded by Chuck Plaisance, with a special microphone that simulates human hearing. The sounds were then edited and composed, arranged and mixed like an orchestrated piece but still remain pure Sounds of Nature. Like Bernie Krause Doucet and Plaisance take essential Nature Sounds and recreate an ambience that takes you even deeper into the essence of Nature.

This is one of my regulars in my CD player. I live on a student's income and don't have the funds to create a fancy surround sound meditation room but this album helps create a serene environment even out of my small CD player. If you fall in love with this album (which I'm sure you will) check out another favorite of mine by the Gordon Brothers, Soothing Sanctuary

I think I am being generous with one star here.
David and Steve excel in some genres but should stay away from pure environmental efforts. The waterfall/stream sounds on this CD are loud, harsh, and overdone. The sounds are monotonous and just go on and on and on until you just can't stand it anymore. I have a fair number of music/nature compilations so I know what I'm talking about...this one becomes just plain annoying after a while. There is nothing soothing or serene about it at all.
If you are looking for the absolute best quality nature recordings blended with music, seek out any of Dan Gibson's work and go no further.

I have purchased about a half dozen relaxing/meditative CDs, have a clock with "relaxing sounds", and listened to many more CDs. However, Garden of Serenity is the ONLY music I've found which calms my mind at the end of the day and sends me off into a quick, peaceful sleep. It's almost pavlovian - I hear the first four notes and I'm instantly relaxed. I highly recommend this as a sleep aid.

As a massage therapist I was a little worried about buying this because one reviewer was annoyed by the chimes - but they aren't really annoying in the least. I not only use this for my own clients, but I will put it on for myself when I receive one. I'm going for Volume II.

My tri yoga instructor uses this in our sessions. It allows you to breathe with the music at your own pace and is conducive to working toward slower, fuller breaths. The music is very tranquil.

From the first gentle melodies on the instrumental album "Music for Rest & Renewal" to the final note, I feel transported to some of the most beautiful places on earth. Guitarist Bradley Powell, "the Candlelight Guitarist" infuses each of his original compositions with warmth and gentle assurance that all is well in the world. Flutes and nature sounds accompany acoustic guitar with such perfect ease and grace that I feel my heart rate and breathing noticeably becalmed. "Music for Rest & Renewal" is the perfect background music for anyone interested in receiving the benefits of sound healing.

"Moved by our nation's events," in the fall of 2001 guitarist Bradley Powell decided to create "a healing work for people" and "light a musical candle," the artist's website explains about this CD's genesis. Growing up in a family of inventors and original thinkers, Powell picked up his first guitar at age ten and later had the opportunity to study, inter alia, with jazz guitarist Joe Pass, Dr. Ronald Purcell (including one master class taught by Andres Segovia), and David Rose of "Little House on the Prairie" fame.

The twelve tunes presented here form a musical arc from Spanish melodies to inflections of jazz and classical harmonies, and from daybreak to nightfall and to the promise of another day. True to the project's title, they are mostly quiet in mood, charming in their very unpretentiousness; and soothing like a hot bath or an evening by the fireplace. While Powell's crisp, precise fingerstyle technique speaks to both the quality of his training and the extent of his talent, he realizes that this is not the place for six- or twelve-string fireworks a la Segovia (or, for that matter, California's own fingerstyle wizard, Alex De Grassi, or his cousin, Windham Hill Records founder William Ackerman). Instead Powell keeps it simple - deceptively so - both melodically and in terms of arrangement. Three tracks - "Waltz of the Clouds," "Rainy Day Canon" and "Tomorrow Is a New Day" - are soft, tasteful duets with the flute(s) and oboe of Gilberto Hildavio, and there is also an overall slightly more elaborate instrumentation on the last track; otherwise, this is mostly about the warm, gentle sound of classical guitars blending with the sounds of wind and water, of seagulls on the Pacific Ocean, and of owls and other birds in California's woods, mountains, and deserts.

Contacted by email, Mr. Powell was reluctant to give specifics as to the types of guitars and strings used in the recording, but kindly confirmed that most of the pieces are played in standard tuning, with the guitar tuned down to D for "Rainy Day Canon" and "Waterfall Cove." He also mentioned the place that both guitars featured on this CD have in his life: one, his everyday companion; the other, a guitar that has been in his possession since college and has been fine-tuned by the hands of luthier Jose Oribe.

Whether you've just been through a period of emotional turmoil, or had a bad day at the office, or are just looking for the perfect music for a few quiet hours at home: I'm sure you won't be disappointed in turning to this CD.

The talented and creative Bradley Powell is the Candlelight Guitarist. His music is original and some of the most soul soothing I have ever heard. "Music For Rest And Renewal" is just that. I often come home from work stressed-out to the max, put this CD on, and after a while the tension just flows away to the strains of his finger-style guitar. It rarely fails. Mr. Powell is accompanied, beautifully, by sounds of nature, including the ocean, birds, rainfall, a stream and waterfall, fireside, and night sounds, all digitally recorded on-location specially for this CD. The sounds are quite subtle and enhance the album tremendously. A blend of soulful Spanish, romantic classical, and gentle jazz, I often meditate to the music and sounds of nature offered here.

The artist features a quotation on his Website, by Ralph Waldo Emerson, which is extremely appropriate to the music he makes, "Never lose an opportunity of seeing anything that is beautiful; for beauty is God's handwriting -- a wayside sacrament. As I listen to this album I really feel as if I'm sitting at the edge of the ocean, with my feet just barely being touched by the cool water. I can be at the Sea while doing homework, when in bed and about to fall asleep, or while eating dinner by candlelight.

That is what I like about this album...for I truly do believe that music has healing powers--much like the famed "Mozart Affect". Especially when I listen to the "Pastoral" and "Joyful" pieces--beautiful renditions of what Beethoven surely must have heard even when he was deaf. Just beautiful...simply relaxing and peaceful.

On the back of this CD it states this music is by "pioneer sound healers". I'm aware of the therapeutic effects that music can possess but I've never heard of "sound healers" before. I won't argue, I'll take their word for it. One thing I do know - this is incredibly beautiful and effective music for meditating, relaxing and falling asleep.

Some numbers contain the serene bliss of nature sounds right up front combined with soothing melodies while others keep the ocean, wind and whatever else softly layered in the background. A few more numbers are accompanied by whispery female vocals. All the tracks flow together nicely without any abrupt changes in mood.

On a few occasions I've listened to this CD while working on the computer - right now is a good example - and have noticed less tension in my neck and shoulders and my breathing slower and deeper. Anything that succeeds at the demanding task of coaxing my twitchy little brain into an even partial state of tranquility truly deserves my highest recommendation.

As an energetic healer for over 15 years I am quite aware of the profound influence that subtle energies can have in terms of providing general healing effects. This release from Sequoia Records contains an extraordinary compilation of the most soothing and meditative tracks from the very best of their label artists, perfectly sequenced into a beautifully fluid and peaceful journey that uplifts and nourishes the soul. When I put this on for my client's sessions the music really assists in melting their tensions away and creates a wonderful sound environment within which to do my healing work. I especially like the two new tracks from the Gordon brothers, Healing Passage and Healing Ocean and was delighted to find Sophia's Sweet Surrender contained on the release. The CD is rounded out well with fantastic tracks from Gary Stadler (one of my favorite Sequoia artists), Zingaia and Solaria. All in all Musical Healing is an incredibly harmonious, gorgeously balanced and profoundly powerful album. Take two tracks and forget about needing to call your doctor.

This compilation album from the folks at Sequoia Records comes with several unexpected gifts, chief among them that the exquisitely sensuous singer Sophia has joined the Sequoia family. Her "Sweet Surrender" remains a particular favorite, and I'm delighted that it appears on Musical Healing. Other gifts include three previously unreleased tracks "Twin Souls" by Solaria, and "Healing Passage" and Healing Ocean" by David and Steve Gordon.
Many of the tracks on Musical Healing include lushly textured nature sounds with bird songs, waves, and running water weaving in and out. Gary Stadler, Stephannie, Zingaia and Deborah Martin all have tracks on the album, making Musical Healing a great introduction to the softer side of Sequoia Records. Flute, harp, piano, guitar and angelic vocals join the nature sounds, creating a stress-free atmosphere conducive to massage, meditation, yoga, Reiki, and other healing modalities. Good traveling music, good working/thinking/reading music, good do-nothing music. It's not jazz, more new-age but not really...it's hard to describe. Beautiful African-themed harmonies of some voice and mostly music, with African animal sounds or weather sounds in the background, that combine with perfect rhythms to create a thoroughly good CD. Worth getting if you enjoy any of the above! By the way, "Temba" means "Hope".

I like everything on this album except one song. I think that is #5, or whichever one there is a woman singing...I don't know what she's saying & it's a different pace than other songs so it is not as pleasing to me.

If you'd like a travel-with-kids CD that does not have anyone singing silly tunes in an overtly cheery tone, this is good for that too - the occasional animal sounds and the rhythms are fun.

I first encountered Marina Raye's tranquil music at an acupuncture session and immediately knew I had discovered the sound that touched my spirit. I have been on a nearly year-long quest for peace and balance in my life (I'm 58 years young!) and her flute absolutely transports me. "Nature's Enchantment" is on during my sessions, I carry it in my car and play it at home. Birdsong, streams running, night sounds are all marvelously interwoven with her gorgeous flute - bliss. I now own 6 of her cds. I would recommend them to anyone who is searching for an alternative to the noise of the world.
