Here are three dozen pieces of music, all played by Yo-Yo Ma, culled from his extensive discography. Aside from the technical mastery and beautiful tone that are absolutes in all of his playing, one is dazzled by his curiosity and ability to adapt to so many forms and types of music. His Bach and Vivaldi are pellucid and played with non-sentimental crispness, his tango music gritty and rhythmically pungent, his jazz seemingly spontaneous, the "Meditation" from Thais simply ravishing, "Anything Goes" a romp, and the Appalachian music performed with both respect and a great twang, while the traditional Chinese music is fascinating. It's really a matter of how much Ma loves whatever he plays here, how entirely he becomes involved in it, and what a fine partner he invariably is to other musicians. This collection is a doozy--it is truly "essential." --Robert Levine

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars pure genius.......2007-05-21

No instrument asks more from the soul of an artist as the cello does.
Yo Yo Ma shows to be master of the instrument and his interpretations en technique are pure genius. Everyone should have this album in his (or hers of course) basic classical collection

4 out of 5 stars Another great Yo-Yo Disc.......2007-05-15

The set-up with the classical pieces on the first disc and the other on the second is excellent.

3 out of 5 stars first disc great- second a flop.......2007-04-12

the first disc is awesome. the second disc is weird and boring.

5 out of 5 stars Encore.......2007-03-31

Incredible. My young cellist (son) loves it. Beautiful music. The album is well organized and each song transitions nicely.

5 out of 5 stars The Versatile Yo-Yo Ma.......2007-03-29

I've found this collection to be extremely delightful! It gives you a sense of the versatility of Yo-Yo Ma like no other, with one disc being dedicated more to his classical side, while the other explores jazz and world music venues. Not your typical "greatest hits" collection.

If they'd never cut another track after their monster-grooving, No. 1 R&B instrumental, "Pick Up the Pieces," the Average White Band still would have earned an enduring place in the music pantheon--and the Irony Hall of Fame, the latter due to their improbable Scottish roots. After all, they were six soul-smitten musical journeymen hailing from quarters much nearer the Mull of Kintyre than Motown.

But lest anyone mistake that quirk for a marketing shuck, the funk-drenched love of early '70s black music driving every cut on this well-chosen anthology will set matters straight. Indeed, AWB proves imitation isn't just the sincerest form of flattery. In the hands of seasoned and talented musicians, it can be the sweetest form of inspiration, too. The members' early work in cover bands informs songs like the sweaty workout "Cut the Cake" and tuneful, Marvin Gaye-inspired "Queen of My Soul" and "A Love of Your Own." This album is convincing argument that soul has little to do with the color of one's skin. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars AWB: Pickin' Up the Pieces: The Best of Average White Band (1974-1980).......2007-07-08

When I first purchased this CD, I was immediately floored by the rhythm chops that AWB is so well known. I am new to the funk/R&B scene myself, and I play guitar. AWB's Pickin' Up the Pieces: The Best of the Average White Band (1974-1980) has more than you could want from AWB and contains their most memorable cuts (Pickin' Up the Pieces, and Cut the Cake, my favorites) that inspire old and new funk players to AWB's rhythms. AWB's horn section as well as their vocals provide lead to the backing rhythm guitar work.

Some of their tunes are more complex than others in terms of guitar rhythms, but that is what makes the CD sparkle, both for the tight and intricate bass and guitar, but the well-versed horns that continually pop out at you from the horn section in rhythm.

There are times when the sax player takes solos, but listen to the backing rhythm and it makes more sense.

Personally, I favor the high-charged funk rhythms instead of the ballads, but the ballads just show another side of AWB's versatility.

If you want to take a trip down memory lane and visit some of the 70's best funk and R&B music that even guitarists like me who grew up in that era can enjoy, give the AWB a listen with your media player on "Pickin Up the Pieces" and "Cut the Cake". Two exceptionally organized, well-arranged, and tight guitar, bass, vocals, and horns.

Your answer will be the same as mine if not more appreciative of AWB.

5 out of 5 stars Great Deal.......2007-03-09

Many sites offered my CD but amazon had the best price for the CD and for shipping.

5 out of 5 stars Funk In The Trunk.......2007-01-08

How can the AWB's sound get any fresher?

This excellent remastered collection breathes new life in the classic R&B sound during an era when musicians really mattered. And that is heard in the first cut; the horns and percussion in Pick Up The Pieces groove so hard.

But the band demonstrates their skills on cuts like Person To Person, Work To Do, Cut The Cake and School Boy Crush. Though AWB is still on the road, the live cuts Cloudy & I'm The One gives the listener a taste of how the group sounded on stage back in the day.

The group had such a clean studio sound, which is really brought out in this collection. Though the AWB has several signature songs, there was a lot of quality material recorded from 1974-1980. I cannot recommend a better "best of" package from a group than Pickin' Up The Pieces.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Old school.......2007-01-03

AWB is a very underrated band. Their talent is definitely for the mature R&B fan who enjoys funk. If this description fits you, you will love Pickin' up the Pieces. There were more great songs on the cd than I expected. "Cloudy" and "A Love of Your Own" were THE slow jams when I was in High School. I am so glad to now have this cd in my collection.

4 out of 5 stars Oh! My! God!.......2006-07-13

I bought this for "A Love Of Your Own" & "Queen of My Soul". After I played it, though, there were so many other good songs I couldn't believe it! I knew a lot of other ones from high school, but even the songs I didn't know were good. These guys really have soul. There are a couple of ballads, a couple of covers and even a disco sounding song. Of course you know "Pick Up The Pieces" but that and "Cut the Cake" are the only instrumentals. I'm really glad I got this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Got it for free on a promo and would have paid for it had I known how good it was! .......2007-05-25

I hadn't heard of Mullins before the CD was offered as a free promo. I picked the CD because the title intrigued me. I put the CD in my computer to rip it to my iTunes and was surprised at how much I enjoyed the music. It's a bluesy mix of country and pop. So far, "Beautiful Wreck" is my pick of the bunch, but I'll certainly be listening to the CD more than once.

5 out of 5 stars Even Better In Concert.......2007-05-11

We recently saw Shawn Mullins in concert and of all concerts I've been to, this one blew my mind. He is an amazingly talented performer and musician and one of the few these days who sounds better in person than recorded. This CD is great and is one of those that grows on you the more you listen to it. The tracks are ecclectic, as some reviewers note, but they show a range of talent and aren't just fillers. In the age of itunes, I rarely like a CD enough to buy ALL the songs, but this was an exception to the rule.

5 out of 5 stars new Shawn Mullins.......2007-02-21

This album is a musical journey through almost every human emotion. As Beautiful Wreck continues to climb the charts (as it should) watch out for Find Love to be a potential follow up. Find Love is tender, heartwarming, and takes you through Mullins' entire vocal range. It is a masterpiece, as are most of the songs on this record.

-Bryan Evans

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2007-01-03

I bought this album for the song 'Cold Black Heart', but the rest of the albumn slowly grew on me. While 'Cold Black Heart' reminded me more of an Irish Reel, the rest of the songs were more folk/country, which I don't always prefer. But after a while those songs ended up being better than the track 3 for why I had purchased this. Songs like "All Fall Down" and 'Homemade Wine" with it's lyrics, makes this whole albumn worth listening to many times over.

5 out of 5 stars Not his usual fare, but great stuff..........2006-09-24

I agree with the other reviewers that if you're expecting another "soul's core", you will be disappointed. Personally, I respect Shawn's ability to create; to change and develop himself musically. It's art, people.

If you like any of Shawn's stuff and haven't listened to Eggshells, please do so. It's worth the original version of "Shimmer" alone. It's my personal favorite of his albums.

If you haven't seen him live, please do so! His voice is absolutely amazing...

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding recording.......2007-07-30

Poco remains one of the best groups of the sixties and this is one of their best recordings. Great guitar work, and excellent music throughout. If you like Poco, give a listen to the Flying Burrito Brothers.

5 out of 5 stars Love It!.......2007-05-21

I was very happy to find this CD and I'm very happy listening to it - the quality is great and the experience of ordering and receiving it excellent! Thank you!

5 out of 5 stars Over-looked.......2006-02-09

Country rock bands like Buffalo Springfield and The Eagles get a lot of play while Poco seems to sit on the back shelf unknown to many. When it comes to country rock, Poco has a sound that blends in well with the likes of the afore mentioned bands. A great debut, but not the best I've heard. The music is well played but some of the songs tend to be a little short. However, for fans of country rock, I would recommend a Poco Greatest Hits album. For serious fans of country rock and Poco, this is a must have!

5 out of 5 stars Good feelin'.......2005-11-13

Poco was the most uplifting band I ever saw and their debut album was the most joyful record of the sixties. From the ashes of The Buffalo Springfield Ritchie Furay and Jim Messina formed the definitive country rock band. The uniqueness of the band centered around the innovative steel guitar playing of Rusty Young and the almost ethereal high harmonic vocal blend of Ritchie, Jim, drummer George Grantham and bass player Randy Meisner. This was the only album to feature this lineup before Randy was replaced by the talented Timothy B. Schmit and though not as well produced as some of their later albums there is an innocence and overall good feeling that was never equaled.

5 out of 5 stars Poco Debuts With A Bang.......2004-11-16

Poco debuts with a bang on PICKIN' UP THE PIECES. This wonderful album proves that Crosby Stills Nash & Young weren't the only great country-rock-folk band to come out of California in the late 60s. This album deserved to do much better commercially than it did, and now that it's been remastered, it just might get its day in the sun. As it was, in 1969 this album was just too country for rock radio and too rock for country radio.

Until this album was released in 1978, Albert Collins had been a journeyman Texas bluesman, little known and unrecorded for six years. His guitar playing here won him a new generation of fans, and set the stage for the popularity he enjoyed until his death. His clustered, sustained, choked, and bent notes, played with his thumb and fingers, set a generation of pickers agog. The tone was piercing; the timing impeccable. Collins' vocals were never quite as strong, but it scarcely mattered as he was the man for whom the electric guitar might have been invented. The eight songs on this set include "When the Welfare Turns Its Back on You," and several jaw-dropping instrumentals. --Colin Escott

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars What Have I Missed.......2007-03-22

I'm 59 years old and somehow I missed Albert Collins and that I regret. I recently heard an Albert Collins song on KCUV, a Denver radio station and I couldn't believe my ears. I had to have some of his music. What a great blues guitarist and "Ice Pickin" is a superb CD. If you decide to get some Collins, get "Ice Pickin" for sure then get some more. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars A Blues Master.......2003-03-30

Albert Collins was one of the most unique blues pickers to grace the stage. Tuning his guitar to alternate tunings and using a capo, he would walk around the bar with his 100-foot cord wandering into the bathrooms, out on the street, around the bar playing the blues all the while. He mixes his blues up playing soft, slow blues, and powerful instrumentals. Sometimes his topics are serious, other times his humor comes through. Collins was quite the entertainer.

Although "Ice Pickin'" is a short album, it is jammed with the blues over eight tracks. In such a short amount of time, Collins covers a lot of ground. From his upbeat "Honey, Hush!" to making his guitar talk the argument between him and his wife on "Conversation with Collins" it is nothing but enjoyable. He shines with instrumentals like "Ice Pick" and "Avalanche". His phrasing is like talking. Never to many words, and he can get his point across with hardly any effort. Humor shows through in "Too Tired", where he's too tired to stand after sitting on a pin, and "Master Charge". He also gets heavy on "When the Welfare Turns Its Back On You" and "Cold, Cold Feeling".

A definite master of the guitar, and the blues. He has entertained many a people over his life. As he said in the movie "Adventures In Babysitting" - No one leaves until they sing the blues. He sure did.

5 out of 5 stars Can't beat this one.......2003-01-02

Here you have one of the classic electric blues guitar albums with a great selection of tracks that can't be beat.

One thing that often doesn't get discussed in these reviews is what setting the music is good for. After all, unless we are professional critics, we don't often have time to just sit down and listen to a CD. This one is good for doing housework, driving to work, late night listening, eating breakfast to, working in the yard, just about anything. If you like blues, you can't go wrong with it.

5 out of 5 stars The Headhunters Are Friends Of Mine!.......2006-05-14

I've partied with these boys and trust me.. the behind the scenes is so much more fun than the album versions of these songs. Nothing's better than hanging with the boys at the old practice house and getting down.

The cd came in timely fashion and was packaged accordingly. Great cd - I enjoy listening to it.

4 out of 5 stars A Different Flavor of Country.......2005-11-26

If you want to take a break from traditional country music, here's your chance. There is nothing mild about the music these guys put out, but it is good clean fun at a higher decibel! These are pretty much cover songs of some great classics, to include their signature "Walk Softly On This Heart of Mind" and "Oh, Lonesome Me". There are also some stinkers here as well, such as "Let's Work Together" and "Spirit in The Sky"....They really dont sound much different than their original releases a decade earlier. Personally, I feel the band died after the Brothers Phelps left the group as they were the real talent, and their "solo/duet" project was actually quite good. While I can say that I'm glad Country Music did not go down the same road as the Kentucky Headhunters, it is refreshing to see these guys have fun with adding a little electricity and noise to some old standards. B-

5 out of 5 stars No flash...just talent........2005-10-09

These guys have the talent and energy to make good music. Not a bad song on any of their albums. Each album usually has an "oldie" they cut again like "Lonesome Me", or "Ballad of Davy Crocket". BEST GROUP EVER!

    5 out of 5 stars essential !!!.......2006-09-26

I really love the music of the carter family, and bought this album being familiar with mother maybelle as a member of the group, but not with her as a solo performer...man what a treat this album is. Anyone who has even a vague interest in folk or early country should get this. It's a very intimate performace by one of the most talented women in traditional music. This is a gem that takes your breath away...makes you feel like you're right in the audience (i found myself feeling relieved when she announed an encore song...even though i knew from the tracklist there'd be one). there should be more records like this out there...because maybelle on her own is just as overpowering as any outfit she has been a part of. Get this !

5 out of 5 stars Mother Maybelle picks a wild tune!.......2005-12-30

I bought this CD as research about the Carter family. I have always been a fan of Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash, and I wanted to hear more of the Carter family.

I played this CD right after I opened it, and to my surprize, it was some of the best music I have ever heard. Mother Maybelle Carter can play a guitar and autoharp better than anyone I have heard. She is modest, but a strong woman with strong playing techniques. From the first few moments of her first song, Maybelle will capture you with her unique voice and unusual guitar playing. This is an essential CD for anyone who likes the Carter family.

This CD really inspired me to play autoharp, since Maybelle made it sound so beautiful. This collection of songs will certainly sing to you, and Maybelle's introductions on some of the songs will make you appreciate the music even more. At some points, it sounds like there are several guitars playing, not just one. Maybelle changed the face of music, and helped make it what it is today, she is our roots. Let us not forget them.

    5 out of 5 stars Verbal History.......2005-08-11

Much of the Carter Family history comes to us through the written word,so it was wonderful to hear Mother Maybelle talking about her experiences.

5 out of 5 stars Wildwood Pickin' blew me away.......2004-09-04

This live recording from various workshops at the Newport Folk Festival in 1963 showcases Mother Maybelle in a way I've never heard her before. She demonstrates a number of guitar techniques including the "Carter scratch" and some incredible picking when she puts the finger picks on. She also takes us to school on the autoharp, demonstrating her unique technique of hitting the buttons in the midst of chording. I sat in the car listening to it after I got home because I didn't want to miss anything she said or did. When I first heard her on the NGDB's first "Circle" album, I thought I was extremely fortunate. To listen to this whole album of the mother of country music was more than I could have imagined. Amazon, stand back, I'm ready to buy more Carter albums! :) Buy it, you won't regret it for a second!

5 out of 5 stars Carter Fans - Add to Shopping Cart!.......2004-02-04

I recently `discovered' the original Carter Family recordings. On this CD, it is rather poignant to hear Maybelle without Sara and AP; as if one speaker channel were missing, but don't despair. The good news is that you get to hear Maybelle! Compared to the old 78's, Maybelle's extraordinary guitar picking comes thru even more brilliantly. She is also equally awesome on the autoharp. Tracks 8 - 12 leave me speechless. Five Stars!

    Album Description

This album is an expanded edition of Doc and Merle Watson's classic Pickin' the Blues, with eight additional tracks from their Flying Fish Records catalogue. In the hands of Doc and Merle, the blues and country music are a natural fit, with songs drawn from a range of blues, jazz and country styles. In addition to Doc's flat-picking and Merle's slide guitar playing, this collection is a fine showcase for Doc's baritone voice, as natural and expressive an instrument as any in country music or the blues. With T. Michael Coleman, Mark O'Connor, Sam Bush and others.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Doc & Merle at the Top of Their Game.......2005-11-01

Doc Watson is one of the premier flatpick guitar players ever, and some of his best albums were recorded with his late son Merle. SITTIN' HERE PICKIN' THE BLUES draws from the three early to mid-Eighties studio albums they recorded for Flying Fish (and one live track from THE TELLURIDE FESTIVAL TAPES). Here's the breakdown on the tracks:

RED ROCKING CHAIR (1981): "California Blues," "Did You Hear John Hurt," "Any Old Time" and "How Long Blues." T. Michael Coleman plays bass on all tracks and Tom Scott plays clarinet on "Any Old Time."

DOC & MERLE WATSON'S GUITAR ALBUM (1983): "Talking to Casey," "Goin' to Chicago Blues" and "John Henry/Worried Blues." T. Michael Coleman plays bass on all tracks and Mark O'Connor plays fiddle.

THE TELLURIDE FESTIVAL TAPES (1984): "Deep River Blues"

PICKIN' THE BLUES (1985): All twelve tracks from the original vinyl release are included. T. Michael Coleman plays bass on all tracks and Sam Bush plays mandolin or fiddle on many (except for "St. Louis Blues" which Doc plays solo).

Not only is Doc an accomplished guitar player, but his son Merle more than holds his own on slide guitar on most of these tracks. My only complaint is that the individual albums are currently out of print and more than a dozen tracks from RED ROCKIN' CHAIR and GUITAR ALBUM were left off. This should have been a double CD to enable all three CDs to be included in their entirety. But if you're looking for a solid introduction to the music of Doc & Merle, this is an excellent place to start. [Running Time - 60:05] VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

    4 out of 5 stars A Welcome Reissue/Expansion.......2004-09-22

This album is essentially a deluxe reissue of Doc and Merle's Pickin' the Blues (1985). Rounding out the tracks from that album are four choice cuts from Red Rockin' Chair (1981) and three fine instrumentals from Doc and Merle's Guitar Album (1983). Also included is a nice, but non-definitive, live rendition of "Deep River Blues" from The Festival Tapes / Tellulive (1979). This is a great sampling of the material Doc and Merle recorded for Flying Fish Records before Merle's untimely death on October 23, 1985. For those new to Doc's music, I would suggest exploring Doc's Vanguard recordings (On Stage, Southbound, Home Again, Ballads From Deep Gap) before you venture into this material. For those already familiar with Doc's early work and are looking for a good sampler of Doc and Merle's stint with Flying Fish, this is the best you're going to do.

If Buck Owens was a key builder of the sharp-edged Bakersfield honky-tonk sound, then Don Rich was his hammer. The tart Telecaster guitar licks and cutting tenor harmony vocals that distinguished Owens's sound came courtesy of his chief Buckaroo, not to mention some nifty fiddling to boot. This tangy and twangy 24-cut compilation gives Rich his proper due. With Owens churning out hit after hit in the 1960s, the Buckaroos themselves were given plenty of opportunities to produce their own albums, and these records are the sources of most of the material here. There are many examples on this CD of Rich's nimble fiddle work and even a few nice vocal turns, but it was his snappy guitar licks that really influenced the course of the music. Melding the fluidity and imagination of jazz with the aggressive attack of rock--and making the low strings ring out brightly--he set country guitar in new directions while helping to expand the genre's audience in the process. His work recalls a time when a sideman was a first lieutenant, not a hired gun. --Marc Greilsamer

    5 out of 5 stars A Musical Genius.......2007-06-01

This was one of the first CDs I purchased when I discovered Amazon. Just now getting around to reviewing. Oh, I've heard it over and over, and just decided I'd check with Amazon to see if they'd put out any more CDs of Don's music.
Don Rich was the only reason I ever watched Hee Haw. (Well he and the Buckaroos and Buck of course.) His voice and Buck's (and the other Buckaroos) just meld together like father/son, brother/brother. I can't add to any of these comments from the other reviewers regarding his awesome picking and singing, but I can add this much to them: He always seemed to be such a happy person. Always smiling and in a good mood. I read somewhere that the reason Buck's career waned, was because he never got over losing Don. He grieved for him til the day he died, I believe. And so do I, in my own way. I miss his happy face. It's even sadder to me that he was on his way home for a family thing, (way up the west coast somewhere; his wife and children were already there. I think that's what I read. At least he wasn't just out joy-riding. It was his transportation. And in addition to all the other words, he was a beautiful man inside and out. If I have a vote, I say he should be in the Country Music Hall of Fame just like someone else said in one of these, but, I don't know how it's done. I signed an online petition to vote Dottie West into it, but it seems that just disappeared. If anyone knows of such a petition on Don's behalf, please share the knowledge.

    5 out of 5 stars Awe-inspiring musician, superb anthology........2006-12-11

This CD just blows me away. I already had a lot of respect for Don Rich before I got it, but now I'm firmly convinced that he is among the finest musicians this country has ever produced--any period, any genre.

First, there of course is Don's guitar work, which is utterly amazing. I don't think to this day anyone has actually done chicken pickin' better, and that alone makes him noteworthy. But he's much more than a one-trick pony on the guitar, as you'll soon find out when you get this CD.

Moreover, as others have already pointed out, his fiddle playing was just as good, and perhaps even better. There are quite a few cuts here that showcase Don's violin work, and even though that isn't what I got the CD to hear, I'm in awe of it. You will be too; trust me--he's that good!

This is already one of my favorite CDs. Sundazed did a great job putting this anthology together, and with 24 tracks--every one a quality tune spotlighting an amazing musician--it's easily a bargain at the full price.

5 out of 5 stars Finally - Don Rich vocals, fiddle and guitar!.......2006-05-08

While I agree with reviewer Jimmy Purifoy that this anthology is missing a couple of songs, particularly Rich's arrangement of Greensleeves and The Night They Drove Ole Dixie Down, it's still a 5-Star-CD. I have all of the original Buckaroo Band recordings on vinyl, but it's nice to hear this collection on a CD. Come on Sundazed - let's see some more Don Rich and the Buckaroos!

As much as I appreciate and enjoy the guitar work, Rich's fiddle playing is astonishing, and his vocals are terrific. He just sounds like a happy guy - his death was such a loss on so many levels.

5 out of 5 stars Just bought this. WOW........2006-04-29

I bought "Country Pickin'" because I love Don Rich on the Telecaster - and this anthology certainly delivers - but now his prowess on the fiddle is blowing me away. If you've never heard "Pretty Girl," you're in for a treat. I dare you to sit still to that one! Flat-out great album from beginning to end.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful discovery from someone who loves '60's music.......2006-04-15

The recent death of Buck Owens prompted me to investigate some of his early work. I was familiar with 'Act Naturally' and '...Tiger By The Tail' - but that was it. Having not grown up around country music, my only image of Buck was his 'Hee-Haw' persona which, although fun, didn't lead me to believe that he had a career prior to the television show. Clearly, I needed an education (!)

One of the marvelous things about Amazon is the opportunity to quickly hear music snippets and 'discover' music you've never heard before. As a result of hearing some of Buck's great work from the '60's, I learned about the guitar and fiddle artistry of Don Rich. This CD is enjoyable for those who appreciate the great 'twangy' electric guitar, so evident in pop music of the late-50's to middle-60's. Rich's musicianship is pure fun and, as one devotee writes in the liner notes, 'he made country music cool.' Indeed, both Buck Owens and Don Rich seem to be the bridge between country music and rock n' roll from this time period.

This is a wonderful set of music; 'Buckaroo' and 'Orange Blossom Special' are worth the price of admission. It's a shame Don Rich left this earth so soon.
