From the Artist
Zorah's biggest dream is to help contribute to the transformation of the world through music. After writing dozens of songs and putting out two cassette albums, she's now finished her first 12-song CD of "pagan pop" and is planning to share it with the world in various ways performing at venues and festivals around her home province of British Columbia and beyond; and through pagan, New Age, folk, and other retail channels. Zorah believes in sharing the fun, passion and magic of all kinds of music with all kinds of people, and plans to be a student of music and a student of love for as long as she's around.

Product Description
Zorah Staar makes "pagan pop" or "radically uplifting pagan music that rocks, bops and boogies you across the dance floor, along with some beautifully gentle ballads to catch your breath." Zorah's songs blend lyrics about love, the earth, the Goddess, and other age-old pagan themes with wild new pop, disco and Celtic rock sounds. Imagine an infectious fusion somewhere between Tori Amos and Loreena McKennitt, all esctatically played by Zorah (on guitar and piano) and the other magical musicians on her latest album (called "pagan pop").

Boys for Pele, the title of Tori Amos's epic third album, is as awkward and confusing as the music inside. Though it sounds like a recruitment slogan for Little League soccer, the name actually refers to the lost temples of feminine divinity. Pele, you see, is the Hawaiian volcano goddess; the boys, well, they're the sacrifices that quell the rumbling lady's rage. Attempting to regain fires stolen long ago, Pele rewrites the crucifixion to star a girl Jesus and in doing so conjures a forgotten matriarchal mythology. While Amos's characters--Jupiter, Muhammad, Lucifer--are male by name, the aural landscape into which they're thrown is as symbolically and expressionistically female as Georgia O'Keeffe's skull-and-roses paintings. Pele is a complex and formless--and often impenetrable--work of gothic-pop chamber music, both beautiful and ghostly in its nearly complete reliance on Amos's rolling Bosendorfer grand piano, chilling harpsichord (which she bangs like a courtly punk rocker), and acrobatic voice (as earthy as Joni Mitchell's and as otherworldly as Bjork's). Unfortunately, she takes us only halfway: her songs engage and challenge us to understand, but the imagery offers few clues to help us crack their frustrating opacity. Pele ends up as much a pretentious and self-indulgent trip as it is a synthesis of talent, imagination, and skewed vision. Still, there's reason to celebrate that an album as formalistically and thematically alien to pop audiences as Pele would win such quick success upon its original release. --Roni Sarig

5 out of 5 stars I see that star.......2007-08-01

Despite the personal nature of Amos' former release, this one is perhaps the most raw in terms of relationships and her treatment of herself. I love the new areas of sound she chose to explore on this CD. Definitely a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars Notes on the Second Greatest Album of All Time.......2007-05-09

What can one say about "Boys for Pele" that hasn't been said before?

This is one CD that I have been through so many times - first on cassette in 1996, then on CD in 1998. After I lost that I remember burning it off a friends' copy and that was stolen. Then I downloaded the entire thing, burnt a copy of it. Somehow that got lost. I bought a used copy from a CD Warehouse in Florida in 2002 and I have no idea where that went. Today, I have it on my Ipod, so theres nothing left to lose.

This is most definitely one of my Top 10 Desert Island discs. It has a little bit of everything, but at the same time isn't really 'commercial' in the true sense of the word (though if you remember rightly, this did debut at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 Album Chart back in '96, which is pretty darned good!).

The magic of this album lies in its deep lyrics, and very, very depressing instrumentation. It is a 'hard' album to get into, in that sense, but well worth the investment. I couldn't get into much of it upon first listen, except for 'Father Lucifer', which I thought was very timely and inspirational (apart from a killer tune). I also remember thinking when I first heard it, how similar it seemed to Fiona Apples' "Tidal" CD which came out around the same year. Both albums are similar in their instrumentation in some way, but this is much darker and more meaningful than Fiona's equally stellar debut.

Standout tracks are many. I particularly like replaying "In The Springtime of his Voodoo". In the beginning, I had a love-hate relationship with this CD. In many ways, this disc has the most 'personality' of all Amos' albums because it seems to be a living, breathing thing all of its' own (buy it and you'll know what I'm talking about). It always leaves me feeling as if there is a lot about it that I have not yet understood, and the multiple-meaning lyrics and subject matter will probably never be fully dissected or understood.

However, if you're into music as a passion and as something that life is built upon, then this disc is surely an indispensable part of your life. Personally, I rate this higher than The Beatles "White Album" and all those typical CDs you find littering Top 100 Best Album Ever lists. What is incomprehensible in this day and age is how few people still know of this album, and what an achievement it is.

Special mention must be made of the track "Caught a Lite Sneeze" - now this is one track I loved instantly and still finds repeat plays on my Ipod. Another favorite is 'Talula', and the underrated 'Muhammad my Friend'. Tori touches upon political, spiritual and socio-economic issues here, and in her standard fashion has some scathing things to say about all of these. However, the cohesive theme here is very much the Phoenix rising from the flames, which if you think about it, is something any human being can relate to in any stage of his life - which is exactly what makes this record so pertinent.

"Boys for Pele" also standardly receives praise from students of the piano - Tori has rarely sounded so adept at the instrument, and the multi-layered instrumentation that permeates this entire recording is definitely a high point. Coming as it did after the much shorter (yet coherent) "Under The Pink", this was the album that consolidated Tori Amos as a creative musical and lyrical genius. I recommend that you get it now, and discover (or rediscover) one of the most underrated treasures in the world of music.

A side note - Listening to this after listening to Toris' 2007 album "American Doll Posse" is somewhat overwhelming. The CD stands the test of time beautifully and is vintage Amos in the best way possible. It made me realize how much fire Tori had back in 1996 and how she kept pushing the envelope back then - her recent effort appears more tepid then, but I guess that only serves to highlight the beauty of this album.

Get this album if you're into songwriting and dark, haunting melodies. You'll realize how many singer-songwriters are posers, and how much talent Tori Amos brought to the genre.

Five Stars. An unmissable Album.

5 out of 5 stars "Wit, fire, grace...".......2007-04-27

What does one mean when one says 'pretentious'? Perhaps some hear wickedness in music and recoil, take offense, cower back and scream - Pretentious! Contrary to some opinions there is no self-adulation to be found in a minute of this; I assure you of that... after all music since Wagner, from Schonberg to Staind, is for the most part precisely the sickness that Tori Amos heals. It is simply a lie, a call out to the most pathological senses in a human being; undeserving egotism, love of pity, a loss of sense in any sense of the word at all.

Tori Amos is not a being to be reasonably figured out, nor to be marveled at unfoundedly. Rather there is an understanding one worthy of her comes to with her work, and one must pay dearly for it! She shows no humility, because she does not need to; her most petty insecurities are transfigured within her to among the loftiest sentiments speakable. Especially this album is a departure from reality, so it seems - but more deeply it is a return to reality, a divine gust tearing through the art of lying, through Wall Street's modern life and times, through the parasitic decandence of a political ideal, through anything at all which stands because it convinces itself to do so. The power whose magic is powerlessness, the great contradiction of spirituality; these are embodied in an album so aptly steeped in myth.

She is not a master of arrangement, nor is she a fantastic pianist, but none of that matters at all (said by a worshipper of Beethoven and no other, may I add). And still she has the nerve to interject the wistful smile of Father Lucifer with a fugue, to violently, volcanically force together her most sinister howls and her most impassioned dedication to melody into the same song (Professional Widow) and follow this with a joke (Mr. Zebra), as though it flew by her completely unnoticed, as though we are meant to make nothing of it. Her voice is unparalleled in the history of music - this is certain - one must return to a piece written in the 11th century (Hildegard von Bingen's "Slice for St. Ursula") to find even an attempt to impart to immortality such transcendent mysticism through a voice alone. And no singer I have ever heard takes that opportunity. Never, having heard Vivaldi arias of unimaginable difficulty, having heard the ineffable flood of the songs of Schubert or the ethereal rivers of Sigur Ros, could I even conceive of any other voice that even approaches the realms of hers. The closest comparison I can think of, is to imagine a synergy of a true Flamenco singer (in Flamenco one sings as though one is possessed and drowning in heavenly fire) and a conjured mezzo-soprano from past centuries who moved every audience who heard her sing to crumble and weep on cue, with each caress of a note. In her world carrying a tune is a formality one respects when one feels like doing so; the inner spirits in her voice fly far above concord and discord, it is sheer transcendence of everything.

It is very easy to be confused by Boys for Pele, with its range from dangerous introversion to insatiable lust. It does not settle on a single mood for more than a few minutes; at times it finds itself disturbingly wicked, longing, comical, vulnerable, mystical, furious... but to be obfuscated by this is to be ignorant to the meanings of the album and of her art in general. And the one constant flow of it - its uncompromising honesty and genuninity - casts it off from mundane mortal shores and sails it into a world perhaps best described by Friedrich Nietzsche...

"light feet, wit, fire, grace; the dance of the stars; the great logic; the exuberant spirituality; the southern shivers of light; the smooth sea - perfection.-"

5 out of 5 stars Her lowest brings one of her highest.......2007-01-17

Boys for Pele as many have said might not be the first one you want start out with if you are budding Tori Amos fan (or Ears With Feet), simply for the fact that some of these songs get down right ugly. But Tori has an amazing talent for showing beauty in ugliness, and in my opinion it has never been more apparant here. These are my favorites from Pele:

Blood Roses: I think the whole album contains the best lyrics from Tori, but this song in particular speaks a lot to me (you've cut out the flute from the throat of the loon at least when you cry now he can't even hear you) and as its first spot in this album, the harpischord is quite violent in its debut which fits painfully well with the song.

Father Lucifer: This is where the album first reaches a sense of happiness (even though it is only preparing for the darkness of Professional Widow) and a moment of elation is captured when Tori sings "Nothins' gonna stop me from flo-o-oating"

Marianne: The theme itself is wonderful as Tori pays tribute to a death of a loving young woman she knew in school who was thought to have commited suicide. The music is sweeping and sad and takes you away to what feels to be a completely different time.

Doughnut Song: What Pele means to me is a struggle to let somebody go that you've been dependant on for so long, and in the end to make peace with it. With Doughnut I feel that struggle the most, and that bittersweet poignancy of doing what you sometimes have to do.

5 out of 5 stars Music from the soul.......2007-01-09

This album has been my friend for many years. I have gone through many copies, thank goodness for the I-Pod. Tori taps into emotions that are often felt, but not always expressed. From raw sexuality to bitter emotional pain she takes you on a trip rarely experienced with just one album. I wouldn't be able to survive with out it.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Educational Tool .......2007-07-07

Chants: Ritual Music is a great CD for learning popular songs used in the Wiccan/Pagan community. Not only are you likely to hear these chants in any public rituals attended, but you can also use them in solitary practice. The chants are simple enough in case you intend to modify them, or you can put your favorite track on repeat and use it as background for meditation.

Each chant is, on avergage, about two or three minutes long, which means you have plenty of time to become familiar with the melody and words, but before it gets drawn out or boring. The lyrics are also printed in the accompanying booklet.

The chants are lovely, and most have simple harmonies, which can also be learned fairly easily. The singers are from the Reclaiming Community so while they are certainly enthusiastic, they are not professional musicians. However, this is a high-quality recording.

I facilitate a teaching coven, and I can see myself using this CD as a valuable tool for years to come. recommend this CD to anyone looking for basic beginner Pagan chants.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to learn and powerful........2007-03-10

This is just what I was looking for. It didn't matter to me that the singing was not perfect. I was looking for simple, meaningful, easy to learn pagan songs and chants. I use them all the time in rituals. They're awesome.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD for rituals and classes.......2005-10-11

This simply-recorded CD contains 19 of the most-loved chants from Reclaiming-tradition Witchcraft. The arrangements are simple and clear, making it easy to learn chants in a few listens.

If you are wanting chants and songs for small rituals, classes, or other events, this is the CD to get.

The CD is not "easy listening," and might not make the best background music for a Pagan-themed art opening. Most chants are drums-and-voices only.

But the recording is actually very listenable, and I enjoy putting it on from time to time, just to be reminded of an old chant I've forgotten about.

Reclaiming also produced "Second Chants," which is more polished music in the same vein; and "Let It Begin," which is music from the Spiral Dance ritual. Both are excellent.

If you want to learn useful chants for ritual and classes, "Chants" is the CD for you.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring!.......2005-10-08

I just listened to this CD and I can't get these inspiring chants out of my head (not that I would want to)!
I can definately see my husband and I using these chants in rituals and for just sitting around and singing.
I felt my spirit uplift as I played this CD. Each and every person that sang or played an instrument brought something spiritual and powerful to these chants.
If I had to pick one word to describe this CD... it would be "inspiring". I was inspired not only to sing along, but to dance and feel the energy within and around. Inspiring.

3 out of 5 stars Simple chants and songs for the Pagan revival.......2005-06-01

Collected here are several simple chants and songs inspired by the practices of Pagan Witchcraft. Intended more as a teaching tool rather than as an 'easy listening' piece, Chants provides several tracks that are appropriate for use in circle and for inducing trance. Most of these chants are naturally (and appropriately) repetitive, while a few others will classify more as songs whose melodies and rhythms are bound to delight and inspire. If you are looking for something to sit back and relax with while sipping a glass of wine then look elsewhere, but if you are intending to learn a body of material than can be used or adapted for circle or coven use then Chants fits the bill nicely.

5 out of 5 stars an extraordinary effort - 5 stars.......2007-05-21

Welcome to your new top 10 band (if you never heard of PM before). I was absolutely stunned by the beauty and technical complexity of the songs. Now I know why many prog metal bands seem to be devoid of good ideas...somehow PM stole them all! I am planning to pick up their other CDs as well. Required listening for any rock fan.

5 out of 5 stars prog metal but with an awesome twist of melodic keys.......2007-03-13

great band here own now all Pagans Mind cds. just short of KAMELOT tho but still 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Pagan's Mind ; "Enigmatic: Calling".......2007-02-08

I wasn't certain if Pagan's Mind could pull off releasing two masterpieces in a row, but without question they have. As hard as it may seem to beleive, "Enigmatic: Calling", is even better than their previous effort "Celestial Entrance" in my opinion. This is a pure masterpiece, and I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys Metal...

I can't really compare this band to anyone in the United States, they're certainly better than anything we've been use to hearing since Metallica / Queensryche died in the late 80's. If this band makes it here in the US, there's really no telling how big of a live act they could become. No Metal band out there can touch them right now in my opinion. Buy it with confidence...

5 out of 5 stars "Creating empires to reign".......2006-11-24

Pagan's Mind started out with the solid "Infinity Divine", blew up in a Progressive sense with their second album "Celestial Entrance", then they scaled back on their Progressive leanings a bit and constructed a set of excellent songs for "Enigmatic:Calling". This is the album that I continue to return to, with equal parts Progressive Metal and straight ahead Prog-Rock sensibility, I consider this to be their finest all-around album to date. I can hear the best of Queensryche mixed with 1970s Prog-Rock, most notably Kansas in their prime and even a little Yes thrown in for added flavor. There are many dazzling moments between the front-men of the band, the lead guitar player is a bona-fide virtuoso and the lead singer in consistently impressive, but the entire group is noteworthy and have thoughtfully crafted this concept album with care and intelligence. The production is outstanding, as it is on "Celestial Entrance", as Fredrik Nordstrom lends a hand once more this time Mixing the tracks perfectly. John Viggo Lofstad, their exceptional lead guitarist, does the honors with the crystal clear production sound. Great music, talented musicians, intelligent songcraft and conception...I really could not have ask for anything more. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Punishing, Fantastic, Awesome, Addictive, A GREAT!! Album.......2006-10-19

Enigmatic: Calling simply never lets up. The range on the music, the ideas, the unbelievable technical abilities of the musicians, the writing. It just never stops. WOW. The vocals take some getting used to, but these guys are every bit as brilliant as Symphony X and Kamelot (and those 2 bands are absolutely brilliant). I love complex, hard edged, well written and played concept music, and these guys are all virtuosos.

From the unusual drumming (no generic metal double bass gymnastics, but amazing changeups), to the blistering guitar, pounding bass and of course the massive MASSIVE keyboards, these guys have everything the progressive rock lover could ever want.

Of the nearly 20,000 songs in my music library, these days Enigmatic: Calling and Pagan's Mind are nearly always in the queue.

5 out of 5 stars Bicentennial Military Music.......2007-03-28

The music from these three US Military Bands was originally released in 1977 as single Long Playing Records to celebrate the Nation's Bicentennial Celebration. It is missing the US ARMY BAND (which I regret) but otherwise the music is GREAT and the Bands are FIRST CLASS as you might expect. Except for the different services renderings of THE NATIONAL ANTHEM, no marches are duplicated. If you enjoy good foot tapping Martial Music...this 2-CD set is worth the price.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed listener.......2006-05-13

I have been listening to military band music for years, and am rarely disappointed. However, this compendium of music by the U.S. Navy, Army, and Marine bands and associated choral groups is not to my taste. Many of the arrangements are strange, and there is much too much vocal music when what I want to hear is the bands play. I would not have bought this album hhad I known beforehand what I know now.

5 out of 5 stars Classic US Service Band Recordings!.......2005-08-10

Its nice to see these old RCA recordings brought out on CD. These were originally released on LP back in the early 1960s to help finance the Kennedy Center in DC. They were popular recordings then. Unfortunatley only three out of the original four are offered here. Missing is the US Army Band which also recorded as part of this series. The sound qaulity has been left largely as it was, which wes pretty good for early 1960s. The only problem with the original recordings was that they tended to sound poor on the inner tracks of the LP. Fortunately that problem no longer exists on CD. Due to the format there tends to be some repeat material here. How many times do we have to hear the national anthem played by each band! Still, there are some good selections played when these bands were in their prime and larger than they are today. Its good to see recordings being re-issued on US service bands other than Altissimo! which tends to use just in-the-can material from band libraries. Here we have the original stuff played in a manner which is no longer done today. For those seeking vintage recordings of US service bands you can't go wrong here.

"I have heard the Big Music and I will never be the same," Mike Scott declares triumphantly on "Big Music." The lush romanticism of that song--with its layer upon layer of acoustic guitars, trumpet solos, and sax and violin--stands as a unique achievement. "Church Not Made with Hands" is as claim-staking an opening cut as any--powerful, fast, unashamedly romantic, and rounded out with a tremendous Scott guitar solo. With reference points that include the Celtic soul ramblings of Van Morrison and the then-burgeoning epic rock of U2, this was where Mike Scott began to build his now iconic status. The trumpet playing of Roddy Lorimer, the sax of multi-instrumentalist Anthony Thistlethwaite, and the keyboards of Karl Wallinger fill out the sound of this record. "Some of My Best Friends Are Trains" is a little jaunty to be a totally welcome new centerpiece to the restored album, but "Red Army Blues," "All the Things She Gave Me" and the astounding title track sound more impressive than ever. The producers of this reissue deserve credit for approaching the deluxe upgrade without the cynicism of some labels. Working with Scott to restore edited and missing tracks left off the original long-player for time reasons, and adding additional contemporaneous tracks, they have created a valuable CD for longtime fans and new acolytes alike. --Rob Stewart

5 out of 5 stars I have heard the Big Music........2006-06-22

And I'll never be the same. That's not only a line from one of the best songs ever written, but the definition of an entire sound. The self described Big Music sound of the Waterboys.

I first heard the Waterboys in 1985 at the Tower Records Store on Watt Ave. in my old hometown of Sacramento, CA. I had been shopping probably for the latest Leon Russell or Elton John album when out of the ceiling came the opening piano licks to "A Girl Called Johnny" from the Waterboys self-titled debut album. I gathered my jaw from the ground long enough to buy that album and race home with it. What a joyous sound! I had never heard anything like it in my life! It sounded a little like Lennon, you could hear Dylan and Bowie, a little U2, possibly even The Cars. All at the same time! I remember shaking as I drove back to the store to see if they had any other albums I could buy. And there were two more albums! "This is the Sea" and "A Pagan Place."

For the next six months all I listened to was The Waterboys. Like a man posseded by the truth I went about preaching their sound to anyone that would listen. I had found a new musical messiah. My favorite album of the three quickly became "A Pagan Place". Songs like...A Church Not Made With Hands, The Thrill is Gone, All the Thigs She Gave Me, Somebody Might Wave Back, Rags, The Big Music, Red Army Blues...Oh, Red Army Blues!

I fell in love to these songs, I dreamed with these songs, I planned my life with these songs. Even thinking about them here gives me the chills. I don't know where this music came from, but calling Mike Scott a musical genius would have been like calling Jesus an important historical figure. Surely the Waterboys were destined to become the kings of the music world.

But it was not to be. For the next two years as I awaited their next release I was daily at my Tower records like a demented disciple begging for scraps of bread: "Is it here yet? Is the new Waterboys album here yet? Finally one bright and sunny day having other things on my mind, much how the pot boils when you stop watching it, the record clerk presented me with a shiny new copy of "Fisherman's Blues". The light reflecting from the cellophane blinded me as I approached the altar. Is this it? I asked the smiling clerk.

I did 95 miles an hour on the way home. Very carefully I put the black disc on the turntable and...(cue the sound of the needle screeching off the vinyl)...oh my God! What is this? Fiddles? This isn't the Waterboys! Fiddles? There's no fiddles in the Waterboys. It says right on the album The Waterboys. It says this is the blues. "Fisherman's Blues".

You see, Mike Scott decided that instead of putting out another album of good music, he would experiment with the celtic sound. Lots and lots of fiddles. Imagine in the 80's if Bruce Springsteen had suddenly taken up the flute, or AC/DC decided that polka was more their thing.

I had come full circle as my jaw once again hit the ground. All those people I had preached to would have to be called. The Waterboys were not the Second Coming. They were merely a band who at one time briefly put together a sound unlike any other. Ocasionally they reveal glimpses of the promised land with albums like "Dream Harder" or "Rock in a Weary Land" and you might even enjoy "Room to Roam" at times, but seldom has there been a resurrection of the Big Music sound from those first three albums.

Note: The remastered "A Pagan Place" CD, with the bonus songs adds little to the album. Frankly you're better off with the original version.

4 out of 5 stars Fine re-issue that doesn't replace the original.......2004-03-19

This was the first Waterboys album I ever bought, and I remember laying that slab of vinyl on the Dual and being blown away by the full envelope of sound. This remastered release sounds infinitely better than the original CD release, even if you're not a total audiophile. The new additions are pretty good, but frankly I find that "bonus tracks" tend to distract from the song cycle that was the original album. (Can you imagine Abbey Road with bonus tracks? Seems to cheapen the original effort.)

As for the two "restored" songs, however, I do take issue with Mike Scott on those. "All The Things She Gave Me" does appear to be a slightly longer, more satisfying version. However, "The Thrill Is Gone" replaces the original vocal track with a much more bluesy/meandering lead vocal which has a very different feel from the original sparse, haunting vocals on this song. I still have my original CD of this album for that reason: "The Thrill is Gone" here on this re-issue is not just an "unedited" version, as listed on the cover and in the liner notes. The original is probably my favorite Waterboys songs ever, so hearing it here with an overly self-indulgent vocal track bugs me. Perhaps you'll like it more, but it put me off.

(On a side note, "The Live Adventures of the Waterboys" has the most amazing medly of "The Thrill Is Gone" with "The Healing Has Begun" which is really terrific, as is the "Because the Night/Pan Within" on that same collection. Wow. Highly recommended.)

Overall, I'd give this re-issue a thumbs up for the excellent sound and most of the bonus tracks, which are fine songs, though it's unclear how they fit into the album concept. I just wish artists wouldn't use re-issues as a way of tinkering with classic works. (George Lucas should have kept his hands off the original Star Wars movies as well.)

4 out of 5 stars the signs of greater things to come!.......2002-06-28

A Pagan Place is light years ahead of the debut Waterboys, but not yet at the heights they would reach on This Is The Sea. The early sound of the band is formulating nicely, with some very strong songs here - the title track DEMANDS your full attention! The re-issue is essential for hard-core Waterboys fans who must own this for the full, unedited versions of The Thrill Is Gone & All The Things She Gave Me. The sound quality is much better on this disc than the original. The previously unreleased tracks generally are 'interesting - for collectors only'. However, great thanks go out to the people involved in making this re-issue - is there a "This Is The Sea" reissue coming?

Product Description

In 1979, Reclaiming held the first public Spiral Dance ritual, to celebrate Samhain (Halloween), and the publication of Starhawk's book, "The Spiral Dance." Since then, the Spiral Dance ritual has steadily evolved, most profoundly by the inclusion of beautiful original music. The music marks the key points of the ritual and this 1992 recording conveys the flow of the ritual. These songs and chants from Reclaiming's Spiral Dance ritual are played in a variety of musical styles, from a capella to full choral arrangements with complex instrumentals.

1 out of 5 stars I Would Have Been Better Off Using The Money For This CD To Wipe My Behind.......2006-02-10

After reading all of the other reviews, I was convinced that this was one of the greatest CDs for ritual that could be found. One person even referred to this CD as a "ritual in a box." Well, I guess that person has never been to a ritual that was anywhere near being worthy of anyones time. The songs lacked sound structure, there was no lyrics sheet (because, of course, there was no structure), and the music was absolutely horrible. The voices of the singers was so beyond being abrasive, that I couldn't bear to listen for very long.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Witches' Samhain Recording.......2005-10-11

This CD follows the cycle of a Samhain (Halloween) ritual, with purification, invocations, and magical working. You may have to fill in a few gaps with your imagination, but this CD has a nice magical flow.

The music is acoustic, and is mostly rhythmic. Various hand-drums are the most prominent instruments, along with guitars, keybords, and occasional horns or strings. The singing varies in quality. But overall it holds up well after repeated listenings. The lyrics, by Starhawk and others, are very rich, and give a strong ecological twist to "Earth-Based Spirituality."

For Pagans of any stripe, this is a five-star CD. For the curious, it is a good starting place (or perhaps try "Chants: Ritual Music," by the same people). For ecologically-aware listeners, this music places ecology in a broader spiritual framework without diluting it.

4 out of 5 stars Music from every Witches' favorite holiday..........2005-06-01

The music presented in 'Let It Begin Now' is rich and real, relying less on theatrics and production and more on *feeling*, theology, creativity, and spirit. It's subtitle, 'Music from the Spiral Dance' lets us know a little bit about what we might expect; the Spiral Dance being the name of the annual Samhain (Halloween) celebration that is offered every year by Starhawk and the Reclaiming community that honors the processes of death and renewal. Included are mournful dirges, and well as uplifting pieces that remind us of the continuing cycle of life. ("The old years' fruit comes to your hand... it's the seed of the year that's to begin...")

4 out of 5 stars Great pagan music.......2004-02-27

I had an old warn out cassette of this music and I'm glad to see that it's now available in CD format. The sound quality is much better than the old cassette. The style is what one might call "pagan folk." Some of the singers have great voices, and the arrangements are well done. I'm always disappointed when it comes to the end of the songs.

5 out of 5 stars Like "Godspell" for Pagans.......2001-11-16

This album makes me think of Godspell, but for Pagans. Do you know that play? Godspell is a musical that's sort of a celebration of Christianity and Christian values.

Well, this album is like the Godspell for pagans. It's like a musical play, in which each singer takes on a different "role" and together, they present a loose story based on pagan beliefs and values.

Some of the singers are absolutely fabulous. The a capella opening chant praying to the four elements in a time of trial is a beautiful intro to the album. It's followed by a group chant about generosity toward friends in Wiccan terms. That's a very haunting piece that really sticks in your head when it's over. Then a beautiful male vocalist sings praise to a couple of male gods. And then the highlight of the album, no doubt is the theme "Let it Begin Now" which is an extra long-playing song in which all the characters take part and sing a verse. There's some improv, there's some contageous chanting. The song just goes and on, freely and wildly. And it is wonderful!

I would definitely recommend this album if you collect music related to one of the older European religions (pre-Christian). I would also recommend it if you enjoy musical plays, because it sounds like the soundtrack to a play, with all the characters singing different parts.

You certainly can enjoy this album no matter what religion you are. There's some very good singing and song writing.

Album Description

Back in the Eighties, bands such as TNT and Conception were the proof that Norway could make a name for itself as the birthplace of high-class Heavy Metal. But the following years the talent of progressive, hard-hitting music was forced to bloom in the shadow of the rapidly expanding black metal jungle. It wasn't until the beginning of this millenium that Pagan's Mind set out to follow in the footsteps of the pioneers mentioned above. Nils K. Rue (vocals), Stian Kristoffersen (drums) and Thorstein Aaby (guitar) formed the band in Summer 2000 and were joined a short while later by Steinar Krokmo (bass), Jorn Viggo Lofstad (guitar) and Ronny Tegner (keyboard). With Infinitive Divine, Pagan's Mind succeeded in combining the progressive kind of song structures reminiscent of Dream Theatre, Rush and Queensryche with influences of modern Power Metal.

great cd. great keyboard work and riviting guitar work. a must have.

5 out of 5 stars What Queensryche would sound like today had they kept to their roots........2007-01-03

I'll be honest, I don't own any of their albums (yet), but from all the samples I've heard this band sounds exactly like what Queensryche would sound like today had they kept with their '80s metal roots, but updated to the new millenium's power metal sound. The vocals sound almost exactly like Geoff Tate's whaling. If you didn't know it wasn't Queensryche, you'd probably swear it was.

As of right now, that's all I have to say. When and if I ever get these albums, I'll come back and update this review to reflect my full thoughts.

OK, I'm back with an update. I got these albums and I've now heard this all the way through.

AWESOME stuff!!! Being their first album, one would expect to be a little skeptical, but let me tell you, if havw any interest in bands that use sci-fi elements in their music, this band (and album) is for you. There ain't a bad song on the CD. Every song is great. Most are very long as well...in the 6+ minute range. There's even a couple in the 8+ minute range.

The music itself again is very progressive and hard hitting. You can't really tell fromt the 30 second samples that you get here at Amazon or other places. Because as I said, these songs are quite long and the 30 second samples don't even give you a good feel for what the over-all songs sound like. There's sci-fi elements in most songs in the way of keyboard effects. Very cool stuff.

Now as for the band's name...I can't quite figure that one out. It doesn't really fit the style of music, ie. being sci-fi. You'd think they'd come up with a more sci-fi sounding name, like Gamma Ray Stratovarius or something. ;)

Oh, as for the over-all theme of Pagan's Mind first three albums here, they are obvious big fans of the Stargate series. As the album art and song themes take a huge influence from the Stargate shows. I guess this first album is the first in what is called the "Blue Trilogy". As all three albums are very blue in nature. ;)

5 out of 5 stars their best!.......2006-02-03

this is the one to get! its now even better with the King Diamond cover!

3 out of 5 stars A polished remix of a album that marks a good start..........2005-03-07

Most North American metal fans first experenced that which was Pagan's Mind back in 2003 with their sophomore debut Celestial Entrance. After the release of that excelent album, many fans were interested in purchasing the band's debut album, Infinity Divine, which was originally released on a smaller independent label. Unfortunately it was poorly distrubuted (but you can still find it here at Amazon, as it's other version of this album that is available).

Due to the demand for a re-release of this album, the band's current record label, Limb Music went ahead and released it, but not before the band insisted on re-recording all the vocals and remastered and editied the original recordings. What we end up with is a powered-up version of the band's debut that shows a promising beginning.

Unfortunately, if you are expecting either version of Infinity Divine to be on par with Celestial Entrance upon purchasing or listening, you may be dissapointed. While the songs on Infinity are good (my personal favorites being Caught in a Dream, Twilight Arise, Angels' Serenity, King's Quest, and both versions of Embracing Fear), they simply cannot compare to the bands work on Celestial Entrance, both musically and lyricly (the lone exception being the re-recorded bonus version of Embracing Fear). This isn't a horrible thing, just don't get you hopes up to high (leave that for their new 2005 album Engmatic: Calling to be released in early April). This and the original version of this album is most likely to only end up in collections of those who consider themselves metal or Pagan's Mind afficiandos.

As I've stated already, the most important aspect of Infinity Divine is that it marks a good start for thre band, a band I and many hope to hear lots of good music from in the years to come. This re-release and remake only enforces this fact and makes this chapter in Pagan's Mind history only that much more enjoyable.

Strangely enough, this copy of Infinty Divine includes two bonus tracks, but gives up the track "Moonlight Pact" found on the original version of the album. While this is quite odd, it's not really a problem as it isn't one of the original version's stronger songs. This will only come to annoy those who must have everything that is Pagan's Mind.

Respected sarodist and chant master Jai Uttal proves once again you don't need a highly self-conscious message or calculated vigilance to successfully mix music of East and West. Uttal approaches his unique blend of jazz, Indian, and world music just as any experienced musician long familiar with his instrument would: as a jam session meant to spin a groove or draw on inspiration rather than highlight a single genius. Shiva Station is a testament to this refreshing approach, somehow mixing a laid-back Miles-style horn with a smooth-jazz dotar, somehow slipping a wah-wah pedal into a reggae-doused groove, somehow laying the rock and funk under ancient Indian chant. All this with a dash of banjo, trombone, and violin and the styles cook up a stew surprisingly tasty. Uttal's secret? It may be that he approaches music without apologizing for being Western while allowing inspiration from the East to flow through him authentically. He locks into the Indian tradition in the name of musical spirituality rather than a star's ego and the effect is mesmerizing. His backing band, the Pagan Love Orchestra, reflects this understated aura as well. It features some of the finest musicians from America and beyond in collaborative, eclectic jamming--most notably on "Malkouns" and "Bhajore"--that will blow you away. --Karen K. Hugg

5 out of 5 stars Full of Life - A Nice Indian Flare.......2001-07-08

This man has an absolutely lovely voice. Masculine, youthful, and well-trained, it is beautifully suited to the inflections of Indian vocals. (We're talking about India here, not Native America.)

A lot of traditional Indian instruments are mixed with western ones to create a CD of music that feels modern, but with some strong traditional far eastern accents.

I enjoyed the catchy, almost danceable songs. (I hesitate to use the word "danceable" because it makes you think of night-clubs, and that's not what I mean. I mean danceable in terms of catchy and spirited). Anyway, I enjoyed those, but to me, the highlight of the album was "Corner" - a ballad sung in English that was so powerful and showed off this artist's voice so well, that I tend to hit "repeat" every time it's over so that I can hear it again. That one really moved me.

So I personally would buy this album for "Corner" alone. But if you're someone who likes to branch out musically, and keep an ecclectic collection, I think you'll enjoy the whole album. It's an energetic album with western musical sensibilities plus a strong flare of India.

This Cd is Jai's best..I heard him at this little club in Berkeley called Ashkenaz..and he was in a trance..Fantastic music to mellow out..I listen to it during my commute..and it totally drains out the tension of the work day.. I wish Jai puts out some new music..his recent CDs mostly have the same songs..the Talveen Singh remix of this CD is a disaster..doc

4 out of 5 stars "Like a lucid dream alive, a mystery".......2006-12-08

4.5 stars. After their solid debut album "Infinity Divine" Pagan's Mind blow-up with a more Progressive album in "Celestial Entrance." With influences from 1970s Prog-rock bands like Kansas, Yes, and even a splash of Blue Oyster Cult mixed with peak-era Queensryche they have come up with a release that demands repeat visitations. While this album hasn't the immediate nor the lasting effect of their third album "Enigmatic:Calling" it is nonetheless a necessary album for fans. The Progressive elements sometimes dominate the songs leaving the listener exhausted. Patience is frequently required to fully appreciate each and every song. The only song that has an immediate impact is "Dreamscape Lucidity" with a superb lead guitar riff that demands repeat attention. Though there are many excellent sections during each of the songs this album it is slightly less cohesive than "Enigmatic:Calling." I would recommend "Celestial Entrance" as a second purchase over that release though I heartily recommend picking up both for fans of either album. "Celestial Entrance" takes much more time to appreciate as it is decidedly more Progressive though it is ceaselessly interesting to behold. Recommended.

This is a serious, serious piece of musical work ONLY for those with musical tastes that allow for unbridled power, gorgeous lyrics, melodic depth, rhythmic power AND sensitivity....really classy in the best sense of the word, but this stuff kicks butt all over the universe...as attested to by their worldly/otherworldly lyrics. Don't buy this if you want some deadpan 3 chord metal tripe. Pagan's Mind is an unstoppable musical force...I can listen to this CD repeatedly while working and then get up and air-guitar half of it, then go back to work...never tired of the intelligent soloes, insistent kick-drumming and the soaring vocals....now if they'd only tour within 50 miles of Boston, heaven will truly have come to Earth.

Buy this....just buy it!.....Buy this CD!.......did I say, "buy it"???......buy the CD....purchase this CD!......ok, now go buy it. (long pause) What did I just say? : |

Music does not get any better than this. Extremely intelligent lyrics. 'Nuff said.

5 out of 5 stars My Introduction to PM!.......2006-05-18

I first heard of Pagan's Mind while surfing on johnpetrucci.com's members forums. People were raving about them, so I went out on Bit Torrent and found CE. Man what an amazing CD. I immediatly purchased the CD the next day and it has been one of my top 10 favorites (the other 2 PM albums are in my Top 10 also.) The initial track is awesome. I love how it just roars into "Through Osiris Eyes". TOE also has one of the best Prog Metal solo's of all time. It isn't over powering, but its very melodic and beautiful in it's approach. Another CD I can listen from start to finish. Once again, don't let the Vox distract you from the brilliance of Pagan's Mind. Nils K Rue's voice will grow on you, and it compliments the music well. 5/5 Must have!!!!
