If you are in a holiday mood, but are heartily fed up with Irish (or even worse: Mariah Carey!) Christmas songs, then you might want to consider this album. It is not a soundeffect album, nor is it program music. A final touch is that it is not cheaply produced, as some more traditional holiday albums.
The music conveys a feeling of cold, dark, and immensly lonely winter. The Christmas is there, but there are undertows of older and more sinister rituals, and whispers call the more unwary listeners to join in...
This album could be a very good way to spice up the celebrations.

Nox Arcana's versatility has made them a tough act to follow. Whether it be a musical journey into the foreboding land of vampires (Transylvania) or a sinister carnival with a bloody history (Carnival of Lost Souls) or any of their other forays into gothic imaginings, Nox Arcana has taken each concept and breathed impressive, symphonic life into it. Their CDs truly are mini symphonies, with astounding musicianship and intricate orchestrations.

In Winter's Knight, Nox Arcana presents a moody, elegant collection of holiday-themed songs that captures the more mystical, meditative side of Christmas. The CD's strong medieval/classical flavor is refreshing, particularly since most Christmas music nowadays seems dominated by more modern songs. Joseph Vargo and William Piotrowski offer great new arrangements of classic pieces like "Veni, Veni, Emmanuel" as well as many of their own moving compositions, such as the memorably haunting "Crystal Forest" and the chilling piano-dominated "Evening Star." Guest vocalist Michelle Belanger also contributes a lovely interpretation of the holiday standard "Past Time With Good Company" and Jeff Endemann's vocal work on "Coventry Carol" is likewise a highlight.

While most Christmas music is, unfortunately, either infantile and annoying or overdone, Winter's Knight provides a refreshing change of piece full of musical elegance and mystical beauty.

As mesmerizing as falling snow, this poetic and magickal soundscape creates a wonderland of lavish treats befitting the Holiday Season. Haunting and sophisticated, there's a certain luster to these songs that reflects the gothically romantic luxury only Nox Arcana can deliver. The addition of neo-bard, Jeff Endemann's spellbinding voice on "Coventry Carol" delivers an extra gift of warmth for those chilly Yuletide evenings. The original score by Vargo and Piotrowski interspersed with classic carols and a booklet of eye-candy artwork by Joseph Vargo makes this a perfect fit for any Holiday Collection, so fill your wassail cup, pull up some moonlight and breathe in the wonder of Winter Knights.

The idea behind this CD and the music itself are a breath of fresh air in the stagnant holiday music scene. Dark and evocative, it pushes aside the sugarplums and saccharine we're all used to. However, the production leaves quite a bit to be desired. It's all done with computers - the choral parts are lacking in fullness, I can't always tell what the stringed "instruments" are supposed to be, and rather than cadences that would give finality to the piece, the tracks often come to a sudden stop. 3 1/2 stars.

I love this bos set, especially the second one Edelweiss is simply great, it's filled with passion and truly shows the beauty of music.But if you had already bought Ave Maria and Edelweiss please don't buy this one, they are the same, this CD is just perfect!

Wow...That was my first word when I listend to this CD.

I like classical numbers more than like traditional songs of
other countries, so the 1st one was wonderful
(Of course as well as the second one.)

When you want to relax, you may choose the 1st one, but
if you want to be excited, choose 2nd one!!

You will feel as if you were out of this world.

When I received this album, I found that it was much, much more than I had expected. The angelic, pure, innocent yet DEFINED voices of these boys add the spark to your day. (at least to mine!)

The first CD is absolutely beautiful choral music which is really relaxing. I DO prefer boys' singing to adults, because it just sounds so much better.
When I bought the CD, I wasn't expecting much out of the second CD because I bought it for the first CD's sake, but the second CD turned out to be my real favorite.
Not that I don't adore the first one, but the second one is SO IRRESISTABLY CUTE!! whenever I listen to it, I keep on smiling and going "awww. isn't this cute!"
It is REALLY sweet and fun to listen to. I just LOVE this CDs and want to give 10 stars out of 5, but obviously there are limitations, so..

Well, if you like choral music, you won't regret getting this one.

What can really be said about this two CD set except "Wow." The tone quality and emotion contained in the music is incredible, and I don't think there's another boys' choir out there who can match it. The rendition of Schubert's "Ave Maria" alone is worth buying the CD. Amazing. Between the two CD's there is a great variety of music as well, ranging from the soft, sad "Locus Iste," to Johann Strauss' polkas. There is a piece for every mood. These CDs are more than worth the money and rank among the favorites in my collection.

    Parkening sets the standard for others to compare to. Enjoyable tribute to Segovia. The type of guitar mastery that one can relax to after a hard days work. Enough said.

    I bought this cassette over ten years ago (1992) when I started taking classical guitar lessons. Would listen to it on the way home from work, then had a baby nine years ago and have used it for lullaby music (works like a charm) for afternoon naps and nighttime. Still listen to it in the car when the kids fight and they mellow out instantly.

    Finally buying it on CD because I think I wore a spot out on the cassette! I have listened to this masterpiece at least a thousand times and have never, ever tired of this most excellent work of art.

    If you are a classical guitar fan, you will absolutely adore every single note played on this album/CD. I promise!! :)

    If anyone knows of a better sonically intoxicating cd than this please let me know. Possibly only Julian Bream's unreal 1982 Granados and Albeniz cd would top this one for me. Anyway just thought I would pass this thought along to anyone who may visit here. The tone is absolutely magical on this cd. This is the cd to listen to at night to chill out and get mellow while being enchanted to the max. Peace. I must go on... the tone, the tone. My god the tone.

    Parkening shows how much he learned from Segovia. I have many of these pieces played by the Master. Parkening plays with a similar timbre, simlar dynamics and with a musicality just as deep as Segovia's. IF you like classical guitar you should own this one.

    This cd will spend much time on my player. It is so lively, yet comforting music to listen to.

    Parkening provides wonderful tribute to Segovia with Spanish compositions especially loved by the master, even some of them performed on one his Segovia's guitars.

    For the classical guitar enthusiast, or just someone looking for that refreshing guitar music we here on the FM, this is a fine selection.

      Or, Will my fans forgive me for Chris Gaines? At this point, it's awfully hard to resist cynicism when it comes to the former (and future?) Chris Gaines. Brooks has settled in for an easy-listening, big-band, middle-of-the-road holiday album. Song selections, arrangements, even the title are all standard-issue Yuletide fare with only the hat on the cover to remind folks that Brooks is allegedly a country singer. This is certainly acceptable when Brooks invests the tunes with the emotion and sincerity necessary; it is atrocious when he doesn't. At its best, the CD is a mildly entertaining, leisurely holiday stroll with no surprises. At its worst moments, it sounds like the work of a two-bit, commercial-jingle hack. It's doubtful Brooks spent a great deal of time or effort putting this collection together--and he needed to pull a few songs off of 1992's Beyond the Season (a better though now-unavailable Xmas effort) just to flesh it out. But the truth of the matter is that releasing a Garth Brooks Christmas album is like printing money. The magic of Christmas? Garth Brooks's commercial power. --Marc Greilsamer

      Being a Garth nut who LOVES the first Christmas Album, "Beyond the Season", I was thrilled to hear that Garth had a new Christmas album. I rushed out and bought it and OH MY GOD, what an AWFUL album. I was SO dissapointed! The new stuff on this album doesn't gel. Garth's country voice doesn't mesh well with the Big Band sound of these songs. It sounds like he "called it in". Also, he has RECYLED and rearranged many of the songs from the first Christmas album, "Beyond The Season". This album was a big dissapointment even for a BIG Garth Nut like me!

      Remember the Grinch who stole Christmas? Well this CD could be titled the Garth who stole Christmas. There is nothing festive about this collection. As a matter of fact it sucks any Christmas feeling out of your body. It's more like listening to Garth in the lounge at the Holiday Inn in December. The man can't sing. And worse yet, he cannot convey a feeling. Garth sounds contrived. He just doesn't sound real - his words don't ring true. But then again - that is Garth. Mr. Contrived. Enjoy Andy Williams this Christmas. Or Bing Crosby. Stay away from the singing cowboy in the lounge. ________________________________________________________________

      Denise Leigh makes her debut solo recital album here with a varied program of isolated arias and songs that really do not indicate the depth of talent that may be there. The voice is small, sweet, true in pitch, capable of nice phrasing and breathing techniques, but a touch on the superficial side of the works she sings.

      Of note, Denise Leigh was born blind and overcame her distracters who said she would never make it as an opera singer on stage when she won the English National Opera 'Operatunity' award with her colleague Jane Gilchrist. Since that award in 2004 she has appeared with the English National Opera and has a following not unlike that of Bocelli. Here is an artist of courage, at the beginning of a career and it will be interesting to follow just how the voice will develop.

      On this recital Leigh sings arias from 'La Boheme', 'Otello', 'Porgy and Bess', 'Il barbière di Siviglia',
      'Roméo et Juliette', 'Giulio Cesare in Egitto', 'Die Zauberflöte', 'Giuditta', as well as arias from 'The Messiah', and works by Franck, Villa-Lobos, Bach, Rutter and others. It is indeed a sampler and while not all of the arias succeed, there is a plaintive gentle quality to her voice that, given the right roles at the right time, may result in an important artist.

      She is ably accompanied by Leo Siberski conducting the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra. Perhaps this will be a voice to watch...Grady Harp, February 06

      Like Raffi, Hap Palmer is a musical ambassador to kids. Aiming for cultural diversity and/or sensitivity during the holidays on Holiday Magic, Palmer and, occasionally, a group of kids make their merry way through standards like "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and remake "Jingle Bells" into "Jingle Song," while visiting the Jewish "Chanukah, Oh Chanukah," the Latino "Feliz Navidad," and even the Hawaiian-flavored "Merry Hula."       This CD is the reissue of The Magic of Christmas, which was originally released in 1999, that now includes three new songs from the made-for-TV movie Call Me Claus. The three songs removed from the 1999 version to make room for these songs are Go Tell It On the Mountain, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen and White Christmas-- all of which appear on Garth's first holiday release, Beyond the Season, from 1992. So, if you have Beyond the Season and don't already own the 1999 version of The Magic of Christmas, then this version is the one for you.

      You will not need the 3-song Call Me Claus single UNLESS you have the original issue of The Magic of Christmas and actually care enough about Garth's holiday tunes to track it down.

      Amazon has done it again. Their advertising needs improvement. The cd is good but it was a cheap ploy to add 3 songs to the cd and drop 3 other songs that were on the original "...The Magic Of Christmas". A buyer would be better off with the original title and buying the 3-track "Call Me Claus" cd, instead of buying this 2001 version with three songs missing. There are no EXTRA TRACKS on this cd.

      I am not a big country music fan, or Garth Brooks fan, in fact I own only 4 country music albums. However, this Christmas album is one of my favorite in my collection! My favorites are "Call me Claus" and "Mary Had a Lamb". "Call Me Claus" is one of the funnest, upbeat Christmas songs in my collection. "Mary Had a Little Lamb" is one of those songs about the real meaning of Christmas. I didn't know what to expect when I bought this CD, but I have really enjoyed it!

      I don't usually like Christmas, but this album kind of touched me. Last Christmas my sisters and I sat cozy around a warm trash fire on the road in front of our home and enjoy the lovely, uplifting holiday tunes from this album. But then my father would come stumbling home from the bar late on Christmas Eve ranting about how much he hates everything.       I've read the reviews people have posted and I don't believe they do this record justice, it seems most of them are just complaining because it's Garth Brooks. So let me clear this up, this "Call Me Claus" release of "The Magic of Christmas" is the same album, with three additional tracks on it, so if you already bought "The Magic of Christmas" look into buying the Call Me Claus single, which is also available on amazon.com, it has the three tracks that were added on it. Ok, now that situation is explained, this really is a good Christmas album, done with the Garth-flare that many people enjoy, but if you're too ignorant to see past things you have previously disliked from Garth and don't actually listen to the music you're not going to like it. But for those folks that buy and album for the songs, this is a great one....it's has many classics on it as well as some new great Holiday songs. Listen to the sound clips available and if you like the sound of it, as I do, purchase the album, don't automatically disregard it because you don't like Garth. It really is a nice Christmas CD for your collection, and I definetly recommend it.
