Woe Be Unto Thy Tangible Soul 10. Beatrice Foley Ken Rubenstein is a self taught guitarist and composer originally from New Jersey, now living in Portland, Oregon. In the past, Ken has received praise from such publications as Guitar Player Magazine. In fact, he was the last and perhaps most controversial International Soundpage Winner for Guitar Player Magazine, featured in the October '91 issue. He was the recipient of the prestigious New Jersey Council on the Arts Composer's Fellowship in 1995 and has been a Composer in Residence for the internationally acclaimed and highly competitive New Dramatists Composer-Librettist Workshop in New York City. Over the years, Ken has developed a rather unique voice as a guitarist and composer. As a guitarist, he has invented and honed several advanced and highly idiosyncratic playing techniques. He exhibits equal facility and prowess on both acoustic and electric guitar. He is also skilled at guitar synthesis and looping. As a composer, he realizes the merits to vertical space. He sees music as a blank canvas. Ken considers melodic beauty to be of critical importance, as well as the horizontal arrangement in which it is manifest. He has an approach to complex meters that is simply peerless.

            I've been a fan of this group for while. Don't expect old Joe Hayden when you listen. I think of them as rock band meets Philip Glass meets, well, a string quartet. OK, not the most creative description, but the music is original - unlike anything I've heard out there. Interesting compositions, engaging improvisations and 2 cellos! Who wouldn't like that?

            I've heard them live, and their music continues to evolve and grow. I'm looking forward to more from this exciting string quartet.

            I am always delighted when instrumental musicians turn their art on its ear. Invert, the New York quartet composed of two cellos, a violin, and a viola, plays hardly what would be considered staid classical. Instead, the six songs on their eponymous album range from whimsical to frantic, maintaining freshness throughout.

            As a lover of cellos and originality, I recommend this selection for fans of composition, stringed instruments, and mood-enhancing music. The absence of other ingredients only underscores the strength of their art. I can only imagine what magnificent damage this group would wreak on a film soundtrack!
