"Schletter creates ... magically dark atmospheres with expressive arrangement of relatively straightforward instrumentation. Mood music for twisted times."

3 out of 5 stars Acceptable Not Impressive........2007-07-25

After listening to the whole album more than 5 times, I have found it to be acceptable not impressive.

On the positive side, this album has the same shade as the first two released by Mr. Cook. I personally liked Rain, Europa, and Alone (3 out of 13).

On the other side, this album contradicts its title "frontiers". No limists were pushed on this album, It should been properly titled "back home".

5 out of 5 stars Jesse Cook Frontiers.......2007-07-20

I've been anticipating the release of this album for some time since I am a huge Jesse Cook fan and this new master-piece does not disappoint.
The feel of the album is very different compared to previous releases but I find myself lost in a new intrigue of musical passion as I enjoy the energetic tempo of songs like, "Matisse the Cat" and "Havana". Melissa McClelland's rich voice aligns beautifully with a brilliant arrangement of Bob Dylan's, "It Ain't Me Babe". I found several songs, such as "Turning" and "Europa" very ethereal and magical. If you are a Jesse Cook fan or just love the sound of a beautiful guitar, this CD is a must!

4 out of 5 stars Great Album, but nos agood as previous ones........2007-07-29

This album is great, and it rocks! I have been a Night Ranger Fan for more than 20 years, and I love everything they do. However, even when this album has some excellent songs, is lacking some of the creativity that other have.
Don't misunderstand me, I would gladly buy this album again, in fact, I strongly recommend that you do so, You won't regret it, but I think that their previous records were better than this one.
It has some very catchy songs, and the guitars are impressive, as they have always been. The lyrics are very good too. I don't think it will be close to be one of the best albums of Night Ranger, but it is worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars Night Ranger, better than the best.......2007-07-24

I've been a HUGE Night Ranger fan for all 25 years they've been around, & I own everything they've released. After the last two studio albums they released, Neverland & Seven, I was a little disappointed. Both had classic NR songs, but they were too Beatle-esqe for me. But, all that changed with Hole In The Sun! This is by far the best album since the big 3, Dawn Patrol, Midnight Madness, 7 Wishes, came out. Sure some of the songs show their age a little, but that's not really a bad thing. From the contemperary Tell Your Vision, to the classic sounding Whatever Happened, this CD had evcrything a NR fan could hope to ask for.
For everyone that doesn't want to pay the import price, sometime in August VH-1 Records will release it state side. But, I urge everyone to get this record, & let the guys in the band know that they haven't been forgotten!

5 out of 5 stars Night Ranger 25yrs. later .......2007-07-24

A well written & played album that only remotely resembles Night Ranger's
other albums. Definetly worth the price for nearly anyone(not just the diehards, like me) but it can take more than one or two listens to the album(unlike nearly all of the 80's stuff that once you heard you couldn't stop singing) to get a GOOD FEEL for these songs. As long as you give these songs a couple of chances you'll find yourself feeling like you did when you heard these guys for the first time 25yrs. ago.

5 out of 5 stars Night Ranger does it again.......2007-07-07

Who would have thought Night Ranger could still put out great music. I have listened to it several times now. I can not find a track i do not like. After all these years NR still puts out a great sound.

5 out of 5 stars Even Harder Than 80s' Works.......2007-06-24

Night Ranger never ceases to surprise me!

To really enjoy the newest Night Ranger work in 2007 you have to forget their 80s works particularly first three masterpiece works, Dawn Patrol, Midnight Madness and Seven Wishes. It's crunching straight heavy metal reminding me of earlier Led Zeppelin works.

Their band developent can be categorized as follows.

Stage 1: Pop Metal Days 1982-89
Alan Fitzerland's pompous keyboard was the key creating synth-featured pop and melodious hard rock. Well seizing the trend during 80s. After their sixth and their first compilation in 1989 they called it quit.

Stage 2: Damn Yankees Days 1989-92
After the initial band dissolvement, the band leader Jack Blades organizes a new band DAMN YANKEES which failed to capture the glory of former band but two albums put out are no doubt the masterpiece. Wilder aspect of Jack Blades music was stressed out.

Stage 3: First Reunion 1997-99
The band suddenly came to life again in 1997 by their Neverland release in 1997. Next year Seven followed well blending the element of both Danm Yankees and classic Night Ranger sound.

Stage 4: Solo Days 1999-2007
Kelly Keagy, Jack Blades, Brad Gillis and Jeff Watson made great solo effort during the second break.

Stage 5: New Era 2007-
The band is alive again and the sound is tighter and heavier than the predesessors.

TELL YOUR VISION opens the album with heavy guitar riff. It is staright rock anthem comparable to Led Zeppelin's COMMUNICATION BREAKDOWN.
DRAMA QUEEN could have been in cancelled DAMN YANKEES third album. I love this uptempo classic-Night Ranger and Damn Yankees blend.
THERE IS LIFE is surprise. It is classic Night Ranger ballad reminding me of both SISTER CHRISTIAN and RESTLESS KIND. But in this heavy crunching album sounding really fresh. ROCK STAR is another blaster! It could have been given place for the soundtrack of the same title. BEING is another ballad but is it necessary? I really hoped they ended this album bombastically.

Verdict: Night Ranger's great comeback with heavier development.
Rating: 91 out of 100
Reccomended for: Night Ranger, Damn Yankees fans and heavy metal fans in general.

5 out of 5 stars Journey---Frontiers.......2007-07-24

I love and have loved this album all my life(since it came out). A must for true Journey fans, and for anyone who wants to smile at the memories of the past. Too bad that music today doesn't offer the same sense of joy that this music does. I am, however, a child of the seventies, so what floats my boat might not float yours, but if you like to be happy when you listen to tunes, this one's for you!

5 out of 5 stars Possibly the best Journey album.......2007-05-25

I have the Time 3 set but also bought this because I was collecting the 2006 reissues. I was disappointed when this came to me in a regular jewel case instead of the collectible digipak case. It was the expanded version but the case wasn't in line with my collection so I have yet another extra copy of a Journey album. It did have the picturesque booklet with tour dates. But I'm disappointed that none of the 2006 reissues had the lyrics printed. I love most of the songs on this album. They all had catchy hooks and they were very listenable. The only song I didn't like was Back Talk which was too rocking for my tastes. All the songs are so good that I feel like this is the best Journey album even over escape and infinity. perry's voice is a bit raspy on this one but not as bad as trial by fire. my favorite songs were faithfully, liberty, ask the lonely, troubled child, separate ways, rubicon, only the young. i'm amazed how different perry's lower voice sounds on Ask the Lonely versus his earlier Infinity songs. It doesn't even sound like the same person.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2007-05-18

Steve Perry and Neal Schon together for the next to last time, it is a must have. Great songs! Steve Perry is untouchable again!

5 out of 5 stars Another reissue, but the definitive "Frontiers".......2007-04-06

"Frontiers" was Journey's follow-up monster 1981 smash "Escape" and proved to be just as commerically successful, peaking at #2(held back only by Michael Jackson's Thriller)and spawning four Top 40 hits, including "Seperate Ways(Worlds Apart)","Faithfully","After The Fall" and "Send Her My Love".The album is just as good,if not better, than its predeccesor, containing other standouts(besides the hits) like "Chain Reaction","Edge Of A Blade" and "Rubicon".The only poor song on this album is the grating "Back Talk".Luckly, this 2006 reissue contains four bonus tracks that strenghten this effort much more by including "Only The Young"(a top 10 hit from the "Vision Quest" soundtrack in 1985),"Ask The Lonely"(which was featured on the "Two Of A Kind" soundtrack in 1983)"Only Solutions"(featured on the 1982 "Tron" soundtrack)and the short but outstanding "Liberty".The remastered sound(by Dave Donnelly,NOT Dave Collins as one reviewer said)is a vast improvement over the previous CD editions, making Steve Perry's vocals,Neal Schon's guitar and Jonathan Cain's keyboard's sounding more powerful and clearer than ever before. It also includes a cool booklet containing photos and tour dates from the "Frontiers" era.Essential for any Journey fan or 80's pop/rock lovers!

5 out of 5 stars Journey's classic follow up to Escape gets remastered treatment, AGAIN, this time with bonuses.......2007-04-01

Journey's ninth album entitle Frontiers was released in February of 1983.
Frontiers was Journey's follow-up to their 1981 mammoth selling Escape and was another great album which rivals its predecessor as best Journey album of the Perry/Cain/Schon/Smith/Valory era.
Before Frontiers was recorded, the band worked on songs for the soundtrack for the film Tron. Also keyboard player Jonathan Cain produced a solo album for his then wife Tane Cain, guitarist Neal Schon did an album with jazz fusion keyboard player Jan Hammer called Here to Stay which had a minor hit with No More Lies (which Journey would play regularly on the Frontiers tour), drummer Steve Smith started a family with his wife as son Ian was born and also created Vital Information (a jazz-rock fusion band), bass player Ross Valory did his thing and lead singer Steve Perry was guest appearing with people like Kenny Loggins on Loggins' album High Adventure on the hit "Don't Fight It" and on the Hammer/Schon album and started work on his solo debut which would come out in the spring of 1984.
Then, the band went in the studio with Mike Stone and Kevin Elson producing again and recorded another Journey classic.
"Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)" is a great opening rocker which had a great keyboard riff from Cain and Perry's lyrics being superb.
Next is the Top 20 ballad "Send Her My Love" which is a great song and a nice ballad. The classic hard rocker "Chain Reaction" is next and was the only Schon/Perry/Cain collaboration on the first half as the rest of the tracks were Cain/Perry (except as noted). Neal's sure-fire riff and counter-vocal to Perry on this track are superb. "After The Fall" follows and is an amazing melodic anthem. The track was included in the Tom Cruise movie Risky Business and is a great song. The all-time classic life on the road ballad "Faithfully" ends the first half on a majestic note. Cain wrote this track himself and is a great song.
Side two of the album kicks off with the rocker "Edge Of The Blade" (penned by Cain/Schon/Perry) and has a strong guitar riff and searing rock vocals from Perry. The melodic "Troubled Child" is next and is a great song. Then comes the punk laced "Back Talk" penned by Cain, Perry and drummer Steve Smith whom played a killer drum pattern to a classic Cain guitar riff. Perry on this track is actually screaming with rage. The off-beat but classic title track follows and is a great number. We end the album with the majestic rocker "Rubicon" which was a great way to finish the album.
Frontiers succeeded artistically and commercially as it hit #2 in the spring of 1983 (no one except The Police could topple Michael Jackson's Thriller) and sold 7 or so million copies in the US alone to date.
In 2006, the album was re-released as a new remaster (this time remastered by Dave Collins whereas the 1996 remaster was by George Marino) and sounds amazing and contains FOUR bonus tracks all of which were held off of the original album. Two of the tracks held off the album which were the Top 10 hit "Only the Young" from Vision Quest and "Ask the Lonely" from the Olivia Newton-John/John Travolta flop Two Of a Kind were dropped from the original album in favor of "Troubled Child" and "Back Talk". Now, for those who don't want to buy a compilation to get these two tracks can get them finally on a proper Journey album. Then "Liberty" is next and we close with the track "Only Solutions" which came from the soundtrack to Tron.

Highly rated ex-Masterplan vocalist Jorn Lande has a vocal capability that is world class, distinctive, rich and spanning a large range. As on The Battle, the songs were written by guitar sensation Magnus Karlsson (Startbreaker, Lal Tribe), Heavier and with a tighter production, thanks to the involvement of Dennis Ward (Pink Cream 69, Angra, Place Vendome) at the mix, this album will excite the many fans who loved the first chapter and everyone who declares themselves fan of quality Hard Rock or Metal. Frontiers Records. 2007.

Second Chapter of the Mega Alliance Between Jorn Lande (Ex-masterplan) and Russell Allen (Symphony X). Songs Written by Magnuss Karlsson (Starbreaker, Las Tribe) and Production by Dennis Ward (Pink Cream 69, Angra).

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Consistently Brilliant.......2007-07-23

Magnus Karlson is a song writing machine and the performances of Lande and Allen are more individual this time round (when compared to The Battle where you could not tell them apart). Great album another triumph.

5 out of 5 stars Revenge sweet revenge - Hard Rock Strikes Back.......2007-06-22

If you liked Allen-Lande's first album The Battle, be aware that The Revenge tastes much better. This is in fact top-noth hard rock with some AOR performed by two of the best singers today and a disc that will become one of your favourites after one listen, so great it is. The abundant catchy melodies, vocal lines and choruses wont leave your mind so soon, believe me.

Russell Allen is the singer of prog metal Symphony X besides being main singer for Arjen Lucassen's Star One project. Jorn Lande sang with Malmsteen, ARK, Company of Snakes (Whitesnake tribute), Masterplan and a dozen others. Where Allen adds an almost bluesy feeling and roundness, Lande comes with agression and that Robert Plant's "rudeness". Together they duet like I have never seen before. And you see tons of catchy vocals, cheesy choruses, hooky guitar riffs and inspired solos (courtesy of the great Magnus Karlson), all with that melodic hard rock positive optimistic attitude. The Revenge flows naturally from one song to another and there is not one of them unworthy of being a smash hit. If it were the 80's, The Revenge would figure on the world's charts for weeks, earn a platinum album, MTV would be filled with its videoclips, the singers would show up at David Letterman and so on.

THE REVENGE is the mindblower hard rock opener with one of the catchiest singalong chorus I've ever seen. OBSESSED alternates melodic guitars and somewhat agressive vocals. VICTORY has a humalong ultramelodic guitar line and a duet chorus that will catch you straight through the heart. MASTER OF SORROW is one of the best ballads in rock's history, amazing feeling and power. WILL YOU FOLLOW mixes some poppy punk with modern In Flames and the result is very good. JUST A DREAM could be an MTV Hit with it's Sammy Hagar's Van Halen inspired melody. HER SPELL deals in melodic metal territory with those keyboard fast lines, crescendo bridges and raise-your-fists chorus. GONE TOO FAR is pratically a Dream Theater wonderful slow ballad leading to one of the best mindblower, singalong cheesy chorus I've ever seen. WAKE UP CALL adds some complexity, changing pace, heaviness and mood quite often, and its chorus could be soundtrack to any Rocky Balboa's movie. UNDER THE WAVES also changes its mood often, changing from Dream Theater ballad to modern In Flames inspired guitars passing through an easy chorus that will get you singing in no time. WHO CAN YOU TRUST reminds me of Lande's ex-band Masterplan, heavier and less "optimistic". And WHEN TIME DOESNT HEAL is the finishing acoustic-power ballad, that perfect psicological support for any broken heart, lots of feeling.

Buy it and taste The Revenge. You will want to repeat it on and on and on...

5 out of 5 stars Blow Your Mind!!.......2007-05-25

This is another stellar and exceptional performance from all who were involved in this project. I was anticipating this cd since its annoucement last year. I knew I had to get because I have the 1st album and that sounded so good. And now finally have this cd in hand it's an extraordinary experience. I have since listen to this entire album 9 times and am extremely happy with the outcome of this album. Melodic and heavy at its best. What else can I ask for when this is a TEN star product. All credits goes to MAGNUS KARLSSON for writing, composing, playing and executing this to perfection. Russell Allen and Jorn Lande is the icing on the cake. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Lightning strikes twice.......2007-05-20

In 2005, the fates (and the good people at Frontiers Records) brought together two of metal's most powerful vocalists - Symphony X singer Russell Allen and journeyman Jorn Lande (ex-about a dozen other bands) for a special project called Allen/Lande: The Battle. The album featured songwriting, production, and guitar work by Last Tribe's Magnus Karlsson. The result was melodic metal perfection and one of the year's best albums. Two years later it seems that lightning can indeed strike twice, as both vocalists have returned for another album, this one called the Revenge.

The Revenge brings both powerhouse vocalists back together for another dozen high quality melodic metal songs, again courtesy of Magnus Karlsson. Beyond providing some very excellent guitar work on this album, Karlsson once again proves why he is considered one of the best songwriters/producers in the melodic metal genre. If anyone is better than Karlsson, it would have to be Pink Cream 69's Dennis Ward, who is also on board mixing the Revenge. With such a stellar team in place, expectations for the Revenge are understandably high.

Fortunately, the Revenge lives up to those expectations. Both singers have been busy lately (Allen with the long awaited Symphony X album Paradise Lost and Lande with a pair of compilations), but their performances here are as solid as ever. Each vocalist has a unique and dynamic style, and hearing them perform together is a vocalist fan's dream come true. Fortunately close to half of the songs on the Revenge feature both singers. Karlsson's songs range from harder-edged melodic rock to progressive metal, and totally capitalize on each singer's capabilities. Ward and Karlsson's production skills are also showcased to great effect, as the Revenge has a very crisp and clean overall sound. All in all, the Revenge is a first rate melodic metal album, and a more than worthy successor to the Battle.

The Revenge is another must-have melodic metal fan, and is an early contender for album of the year. If you're a fan of Russell Allen, buy this album. If you're a fan of Jorn Lande, buy this album. If you enjoy top quality melodic metal bands like Pretty Maids, Last Tribe, TNT, Pink Cream 69, Starbreaker, and Sunstorm, you absolutely must buy this album.

PS - I'd love to see this idea expanded a bit to include vocalists like DC Cooper, David Readman, Tony Harnell, etc. in some sort of rotating friendly competition among the genre's best singers.

Frontiers. 2004.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Five Stars For Delp And Goudreau.......2007-03-17

The Delp and Goudreau recording is probably the last CD to feature the dynamic vocals of the late and great Brad Delp. There are upbeat, mellow and poignant songs on the CD and Delp's vocals soar and lament while Goudreau proves to be a stellar guitarist. Brad Delp literally sang more songs for RTZ (featuring Goudreau) than he did for the much more famous band Boston. RTZ was not as consistently good as Boston but many of their exemplary tracks could fit into a Boston CD. Brad Delp had a great career as a singer and he was a longstanding vegetarian and humanitarian. His untimely death makes it imperative for fans to buy all the RTZ CDs. Delp was the voice of Boston and he was perfect for Tom Scholz's multi-instrumental virtuousity and impeccable sound engineering.

5 out of 5 stars A great CD set ! .......2007-02-26

I'm a proud owner of the Boston "spin-off" discs like "Return To Zero" and "Lost" by RTZ...Barry Goudreau's "Orion The Hunter"...Barry's self titled solo album...and of course the beautifully remastered first two Boston albums. So...when I spotted "Lost And Found/Delp And Goudreau...I had to go for it ! I'm rarely one to do track by track analysis...just a general review...especially when you can't go wrong with a purchase...so here goes !

For old times sake...I listened to Disc 2..."Delp And Goudreau" first...and found it to be GREAT...it's nice to see them get together for some new music ! Fans of these guys...and newbies will love this cd ! It doesn't sound exactly like Boston...which is fine...it's not supposed to.

The RTZ disc...well...I can see why Brad and Barry didn't previously release this stuff as RTZ...it sounds EXACTLY like Boston...without question. Compare it to the RTZ discs and you'll see...but you know what ? It's still great stuff...certainly better than what Tom Scholz' most recent Boston cd "Corporate America " was...JUNK ! But Tom's "the man"...he remastered those Boston discs for...and after all...was the creator of Boston !

I'm making this quick and painless for you...put it in your shopping cart now...you never know...it could go off the market one day...it's a great addition to your collection !

4 out of 5 stars If you love Boston--try these cds.......2007-01-05

This sounds exactly like a Boston recording of course with the lead singer and guitar player from Boston in the group. The only thing wrong is that every song sounds the same--not too original. The 2nd cd is exactly as the the 1st with almost the same lineup so why did they not call it an RTZ album? Sound is very clear and the stereo is great--play these loud--- Boston fans!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars very good for Boston Lite.......2006-09-21

This is a good album from Brad and Barry. Very lite on the second side, partially heavy on the first side. Overall, a somewhat great effort from the two. I call this album "Boston Lite", cause it never rocks as hard as any of their other albums

" One Step Away" is a nice blend of fuzzy eighties guitars and pulsing keys. "Fool for Love" is on the acoustic side, but has a great electric guitar bending lead. One thing you'll start to notice is how RTZ keep their song writing simple (intro-verse-chorus-repeat-solo-repeat). There's no better way to get a song like "Rise Above It All" burned into your head. You know, in that little spot of your brain where it repeats the same song over and over again. "Social Disease" targets tabloid and trash television with a vengeance, with crunchy guitars and strong melodic vocals. `80's cliché alert': a song with the word rock in it-"Rock the Night" is your standard rock anthem about celebrating the end of a long working day. "Power of Love" makes the most of its keyboard leading tones. Dual vocals harmonies recall that classic seventies sound.

Delp & Goudreau
This disc tends to focus more on the duo's lighter, acoustic side. "What You Leave Behind" has an enjoyable acoustic tone to it. Delp is still just as passionate with his vocals as he was with RTZ. Bluesy guitar licks and soulful vocals dominate "Let it Roll". Twangy guitar tones and a simple high hat set the mood on "Out of My Hands". As the tracks builds, it flooded with hard riffs and powerful vocals. It sounds like a lost Pink Floyd track. "Everyday" is a piano driven ballad about enduring love. "The Rhythm Won't Stop" has a country feel to it, while "Reconciliation" is a pure classic rock track.

The Bad
Nothing

The Verdict
Sometimes when a band puts together a CD of unreleased material, you find out exactly why the tracks were never put out before. RTZ is not one of those bands. RTZ have their feet firmly planted in the seventies/eighties classic rock sound, but never ever sound stale.

Mary Black has the gift of being able to sing traditional and contemporary music with equal grace. No Frontiers is a beautiful example of her modern mode. Even when she is singing something as pop-oriented as Burt Bacharach's "Say a Little Prayer," Black's pure voice retains echoes of her roots. (Her father was a fiddler and her mother sang in dance halls in Dublin.) The arrangements are contemporary, but many of the songs have a distinctly old, folk tinge. Her grounding in traditional music gives her performances of new material a timeless feel. --Michael Simmons

5 out of 5 stars great singer.......2007-05-12

High quality as always from Mary Black. Brilliant singer with unique sound and style. The songs are diverse and of all times.

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite!.......2003-11-18

How do you go about producing a record by an artist with a voice that is as clear as a mountain stream and as sweet as honey? First, you make sure that you have a collection of songs that are worthy of the voice. Second, you make sure that nothing in the production process, including musical arrangement, intrudes on the magic of the singing.

Take a bow Declan Synott. This record is quite breathtaking in its beauty. Mary Black is Ireland's greatest undiscovered treasure. No Frontiers is a wonderful song rendered unforgettable by the astonishing vocals displayed by Black. Her rendition of Columbus is almost mystical.

Black can switch between pop, blues, jazz and folk with a fluidity that is awesome. Hear her sing Say a Little Prayer and marvel at the freshness and vitality she brings. Hear her sing Carolina Rua where she turns a jaunty ditty into a rollicking rollercoaster.

This record is not perfect, and I am glad. Perfection is, by its nature, too often bland. This record is flawed but is nonetheless an exquisite thrill. Buy it now!

5 out of 5 stars A Gentle Pick-Me-Up.......2003-01-31

Hearing Mary Black sing "Say a Little Prayer for you" is alone, worth the price of the album. With her paradoxically strong and innocent voice, she breathes new life into that exciting, sing-along song. Every time my "random" function on my CD player selects that song, I turn the volume up and sing along.

But there are a lot more treats on this album. COLUMBUS, with its smooth rhythms and bright, expansive vocals puts me in the perfect mood for taking a road trip every time.

The album is just one fun, tender, folk/pop gem after another. It isn't my number one favorite of Mary Black's albums, but if I ever lost it ... I'd replace it immediately. It's not only an essential ingredient in a Mary Black collection, but its subtle cheer is also an essential ingredient in the recipe for a good day.

5 out of 5 stars Still beautiful after all these years...........2002-03-28

Maybe it's because this album came along at a special time in my life; maybe it's because this was the first Mary Black album I ever owned; and maybe because this album contains some of the most beautiful and sophisticated songs and singing I've ever heard, that I can honestly say that it remains one of the best albums I have ever owned. I am always transported back to musical magic when listening to the title track--it is still as exciting to listen to as when I first heard "No Frontiers". "Carolina Rua" is a lilting, uplifiting song of great joy. "Columbus" is a dark, deep song about restlessness, and who would think that anyone could write and record a song titled "Fat Valley of Pain"? Yet Mary Black pulls it off, and this album is one succession of great songs. I own six Mary Black albums, but this still remains my favorite. Best of all, I'm just glad I discovered this great singer, who has added such pleasure into my life.

5 out of 5 stars Pleasure without frontier.......2001-10-19

I bought this disc 3 years ago. Since then, these songs have become a legend for me. This is the kind of music which enchantes you.The lyrics is sophisticated, the instruments subtle, and last but not the least, the quality of sound is simply astounding. You can sit back, and listen from the beginning to the end.My favorite songs are No frontiers (also contained on the unplugged album of The Corrs), and The Shadow. But it`s hard to make such statements as favourites.Mary Black lovers may find Loreena McKennitt, Suzanne Vega, Secret Garden congenial to their mind and soul as well. These are not of background music!!!Adam from Düsseldorf

4 out of 5 stars sounds good to me..........2007-08-02

Ok,I'm not sure whether this is hard rock, soft metal, classic rock or melodic rock. But whatever you wish to term it,there are few vocalists that can take you there as well as JLT can.Whether it is with Rainbow,Yngwie J Malmsteen,Sunstorm,or whatever incarnation that he chooses to release his latest music in,JLT delivers. If you are a fan of good old rock'n'roll, you could do a lot worse than JLT. Also,be sure to check out Sunstorm if possible. You'll be glad that you did.

4 out of 5 stars Melodic Rock at It's Best.......2007-07-24

This is Turner's 10th solo album to date. Don't let the number scare you. When his last project 'Sunstorm' hit the store shelves in late 2006, fans like myself, were not only pleasantly surprised at the outcome of that recording, but we also encouraged Turner to release more material like this.

So, as a result is the release of this CD. Sure for some fans, it may not be "completely" like his 9th solo effort 'The Usual Suspects' (released in early 2005) which was more hard-edged like 'JLT' (2003) or 'Slam' (2001), but for most of us who are still trying to discover 'great' music, but cannot hear it on a mainstream radio station; Turner's CD provides just the answer for anyone who chooses to buy this CD and listen to it, in its entirety.

One thing you can always count on with Turner is his strong vocal prowess. He is able to carry you through this sort of 'musical journey', as I call it, because of the array of varied material he records for these solo efforts that will surely make any longtime fan or NEW one for that matter, want to HEAR MORE from this legendary artist.

Nevertheless, for all those ney-sayers out there; tracks like "Second Hand Life", "Stroke of Midnight", and "Cruel" for example, just as easily could have made it on 'The Usual Suspects' as well.

Two of the most noteable tracks on this CD are "Your Love Is Life" and my personal favorite, "Blood Red Sky". From the guitar intro, to the driving drum pattern, to the arabian style melody - this track is definitely the 'highlight' of this CD. However with that said, let's not forget the ballad "In Your Eyes" or other tracks like "Got Me Where You Want Me" or "Two Lights". All these tracks are different in their musical style and approach. Like I said before, this CD contains something for EVERYBODY!

Check it out.

3 out of 5 stars Rock not Hard.......2007-07-03

I only give this new album by JLT 3 stars, because I was a bit disoppointet 'bout it...I exspected something like a follow up to "Usual Suspect",(my favourit) but it has alot of similarities between the songs. This is a rock cd, not hard rock, as for many of Joe Lynn Turner albums, the variety of rock and metal are different from each album he makes. Rescue You was poppy rock, Holy Man metal, The self acclaimed JLT rock and Usual Suspect a bit of pop/blues and hard rock.. However still this "Second hand life" a must for fans:-)
Not second hand music.. Quality:-)

5 out of 5 stars Exhilarating!!.......2007-07-14

I am an avid music collector. Virtually every style except rap, and heavy heavy metal. I own literally thousands of albums. Jesse Cook is, in my humble opinion, the most talented acoustic guitar player I have ever heard. I love his music. The DVD included with this album is worth the price of the album alone! What a sound! I easily give five stars to all of his recordings. I own them all, with the exception of THE ULTIMATE JESSE COOK.(no need for a greatest hits album when one owns all of the albums!) A must for all serious music lovers, not just lovers of flaminco.

Album Details

First New Giant Album Since 1991's "Time to Burn."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars 3 is still good.......2007-03-10

After the first 2 GIANT discs , couldnt wait for this one its just hard to find.
this disc is worth the wait it might not pack the punch of the first two but it still rocks from start to finish.Dan Huff needs to stay out of country and stay here this is where he excels.

4 out of 5 stars Giant is weakened but still trounces the competition.......2003-06-22

Giant returns after a near 10-year hiatus with their basic sound mostly intact. Just like the first 2 albums, this is a collection of late 80s stadium-rock anthems ("Sky's The Limit" sounds very similar to "Thunder & Lightning," the first song from the group's second album) searing instrumentals ("Combustion" apes Van Halen's "Eruption") and big-hair ballads reminiscent of Bon Jovi, Bryan Adams or Def Leppard in their prime ("Over You" being one of the better ones).
So - for fans of this genre, this contains all the right ingredients, and should make for another classic album. Or does it???

While the album starts powerfully with "Combustion," it starts to lose momentum as this track merges into "You Will Be Mine." Although the song itself is very strong, it is badly let down by the production, with the drums sounding too small & tinny and the guitars being too distant in the mix.

Also, the absence of Alan Pasqua appears to be felt here. The first two albums were characterised by a greater depth of songwriting and his extra keyboards are badly missed here; so overall the album ends up sounding thinner, less "meaty" and less slick as a result.

What "III" really lacks is a couple of stand-out tracks in the vein of "Lost in Paradise" or "Now Until Forever." The album's penultimate song "Can't Let Go" is a very poor copy of these and should have been left off.

Yet for all this, it still puts most recent rock albums to shame. "It's Not the End" is a great modern take on an 80s power-ballad theme. "Oh Yeah," one of the stronger songs, contains the usual Giant ingredients in a contemporary package, sounding fresher than some songs on the album. Also, the album closes with a rousing cover of "Bad Case of Loving You" - I enjoyed that one, although the vocals are a bit weak and mumbled.

Tip - buy the Japanese import if you can (which includes four bonus cuts, including Giant's superb take on Jeff Beck's "Because We Ended as Lovers.")

Overall, this is not as good as the first two albums, but remember this: a weakened Giant remains head & shoulders above the competition.

4 out of 5 stars Still a good album, but lacks that extra "wow" factor.......2003-06-22

Giant returns where "Time To Burn" left off, with the same ingredients & sound: Def Leppard-esque power-rock anthems, the blazing guitars ("Combustion" apes "Eruption" & and shows Dan Huff to be a match for Eddie Van Halen on guitar!), the lovelorn angst (Can't Let Go, It's Not the End) and the heavily layered keyboards of "Love Can't Help You Now."

However, it lacks the "over-the-edge" feel and "real-ness" of "Last of The Runaways" or "Time to Burn." Part of the problem lies in the production - THAT great intro merges into "You Will Be Mine;" a potentially superb track spoiled by the drums sounding too small & tinny. Guitars higher in the mix would also have driven the track along nicely.

Also, the absence of Alan Pasqua appears to be felt here - the first two albums were characterised by a greater "depth" of songwriting, and were generally much "meatier." What "III" really needed is the epic angst of say another "Lost in Paradise" or "Now Until Forever." "Can't Let Go" is a poor copy of these and should have been left off.

Yet for all this, it still puts most contemporary rock albums to shame. "Sky's The Limit" sounds like "Thunder & Lightning" off the second album, but is just as good if not better. "It's Not the End" is a great modern take on an 80s power-ballad. "Oh Yeah," one of the better tracks on the album, contains the usual Giant ingredients in a different package, sounding fresher than rehashes/out-takes like "Over You" and "Love can't Help You Now."

Oh, and what an excellent take on "Bad Case of Loving You" - I really enjoyed that one!

OK, this is not as good as previous releases, but remember this; a weakened Giant remains head & shoulders above the competition.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Rock Band You Never Heard Of........2003-05-10

Welcome back to the boys of Giant! I just found out this cd existed, and I'm so sorry I haven't had it for a year and a half. I can't stop playing it after owning it for two weeks now. This is a great continuation of the superb Giant sound that started for me in the summer of 1989 when I heard the first chords of "I'm A Believer" on FM radio. I so wish they had stayed together and put out more music. Fortunately, I did get to see them live in May 1992 at a club in Florida. Great gig.

This band has it all; the virtuoso guitar player/vocalist, the solid backbeat of an outstanding drummer and premier bass player, and a most excellent keyboardist. If you've never heard this band before and you like powerful melodic rock with punch, strong lead vocals, piercing lead guitar, and song structure and harmonies out the ying yang, then do your ears a huge favor and get the entire Giant collection of "Last Of The Runaways", "Time To Burn", and "Giant III." Their music and harmonies will give you goosebumps. You absolutely will not be disappointed.
(It's cool to have a band you love with your own name too!)

4 out of 5 stars Just a bit off the mark.......2002-10-25

Having followed Giant since their first album, "Last of the Runaways", I was pleased to see that they are working again. Dan Huff has spent most of his time since Giant's second album doing studio and production work for some of Nashville's most talented artists. The one or two interviews that I've read quoted him as doubtful that Giant would reconvene. Obviously time changes things.

"III" is an appropriate title, not just because this is the band's third album, but because keyboardist Alan Pasqua does not join the band for this album, reducing the group to a power trio. Surprisingly, his absence definately diminishes the group's punch. A glance back at the band's first two albums shows Alan's name figuring heavily in the writing credits, particularly on firey rockers and the band's more powerful ballads. Some of the bands best hooks are on songs that he co-wrote.

Still, this is a solid album. I've been a fan of Dan's guitar playing ever since I heard his work with The Front (way back in the early 80's). It's always a pleasure to hear him play. His vocals are strong here, and seem to get better with each new album. The only exception is on the cover "Bad Case Of Loving You (Doctor, Doctor)" which he mumbles his way through. I'd give this album five stars, but I'm knocking off one because it is a bit ponderous at times. The tunes just aren't quite as memorable as their hook-filled songs of the past. Hopefully this is just a warm-up and that we'll be hearing more from the boys in the near future.

5 out of 5 stars Love Survivor, loved the CD.......2007-05-12

Welcome back, Survivor! I love the music. Great CD.

4 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Survivor.......2007-04-26

Finally, the ultimate Survivor! As a long time Survivor fan, I have been waiting for this CD for a loooonng time! The reason I see this as the ultimate Survivor is they finally unleashed Frankie Sullivan and allow him to rock again, AND they have Jimi Jamison on vocals. So, this CD is more along the lines of the original, REAL Survivor. [Sorry, K.M. Morris] We are talking more along the lines of Premonition, Eye Of The Tiger, Caught In The Game. Not the uber-pop oriented Vital Signs and When Seconds Count albums.

I saw Survivor open up for Kansas in Aug of 1982, and they rocked! I mean rocked! (Eye Of The Tiger was @ #1 on the charts). Frankie Sullivan was most impressive live. It is nice to see him back in his old rocking form again! I attribute this to the absence of Peterik. Just like when Steve Perry left Journey, Neal Schon was allowed to turn it up again. Same scenario here.

If you like the older Survivor, more guitar, less keyboards, this is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars True to Form.......2006-11-22

This is classic Survivor. It is evident from the opening track "Reach" that time has basically stood still for this band, remaining true to their fan base and cranking out an awesome CD for 2006. Three tracks stand out, including "Reach," Talkin' About Love," "Seconds Away." These would have all been top 5 hits back in 1986. As it stands, the music is fantastic although not relevant to this decade, and Jamison's voice has hardened a bit but not nearly as much as one would think given the number of years that have passed, and his deeper vocals actually suit his singing style just fine. A follow-up with Peterik back in the fold that would coincide with the new Rocky film could produce one of the more unlikely, but welcome suprise hits of 2007.

2 out of 5 stars If your looking for another Vital Signs you won't find it here........2006-10-31

To much guitar, drowns out all the other instruments. Survivor was made famous by heavy keyboards and drums, not guitars. I was expecting another Burning Heart, Is this Love, High on you. No songs on this albums have that sound. The vocals by Jamison are top notch, but none of the songs sound like the Survivor I remember. Survivor guitars were only there to complement the keyboards, bass and drums, not drive the whole song. I guess Jim Peterik was the man behind Survivor all along. I give the CD 2 stars for Fire makes Steel, the rest are throw aways. ***Recommended for die hards only*** I highly recommend 'When Seconds Count' for anyone getting started with Survivor.

3 out of 5 stars Whyte man can jump.......2006-10-30

From the land down under, hello - I am a former drummer and 80's product, yeh yeh yeh: you either love it or bypass it don't ya!
This is a reasonably solid album, although probably needs some more harmonies to polish it off, but the important thing is keeping the flame alive with this brand of vibes. I am certainly not taken by the next wave of stadium rock bands like Coldplay who are as exciting as listening to my dishwasher.
I am not a christian, but if you are a keen searcher for intense quality rock - a little sample of my research/music collection for you,is to check out Whiteheart and Giant(Dan Huff- songwriter, guitarist, producer, etc). This is where the cream rises to the top.
