BT's This Binary Universe is really a follow-up to his 2004 soundtrack to Monster, a brilliant work of cinematic moods and ambient Americana. It was unjustly ignored by both the Oscars and the Grammys, where it should have at least been nominated for Best Surround Sound Recording. None of that has stopped Brian Transeau from going further down this path of expansive ambient electronica that takes him out of the techno-pop and trance direction he had been pursuing. This Binary Universe taps into BT's classical side, with expansive arrangements and intricate, albeit minimalist, thematic development. From the opening of "All That Makes Us Human Continues," BT reveals himself as a master of Eno-esque melancholy, as simple melodies evolve through an electro-orchestral instrumental palette. Lounge jazz with solos in the key of abstract, plaintive arpeggiated guitars, electro marches, minimalist hymns, and pastoral dreamscapes drive an album that seeks out joy and redemption, but not without traveling through the dark. The last track, "Good Morning Kaia," is a paean to his newborn daughter, and the most purely anthemic track on the disc.
I suspect the real raison d'être of This Binary Universe is the accompanying 5:1 surround DVD. BT creates an immersive space that's less sonic pinball and more audio sculpture, often revealing different aspects of his music than in the stereo mix. Each song on the DVD has a unique video that includes antique robots, surreal landscape drawings, live action fantasies, and abstract designs. It's the best way to experience this music, but whether you watch the DVD or tune into the stereo CD, This Binary Universe may be the first ambient symphony of the 21st century. --John Diliberto

Yea, the best of the best.......2007-06-30
Have you ever bought a drink thinking you are getting something else. Say you buy a 'tea' but when you taste it, tastes like 'coke'. Oh, you bought the tea flavored coke. This is how I experienced BT's Binary Universe. I was expecting that in your face, break-beat, trance, old-school BT but this CD is definitely more ambient or house. With that being said, it is really a truly amazing CD. You won't get it the first time you listen to it, but if you listen to the CD over and over again it starts to sync-in. Some of the music is stuff you haven't heard before. Maybe in 10 years, musicians, producers will catch-up.
Really enjoyed track 4 through 6. Even though those are only 3 songs, they are long and change to different styles in the middle. 6 is freaking awesome.
I wanted to give it 5 stars, but because I was expecting something else, I knocked off a star. Good job though.
Brilliant, just brilliant.......2007-06-07
Men have been knighted for less.
If you like electronica in any way...strike that. If you think sound is kinda groovy, check this out. There will be something here for you.
Very good change for Mr. Transeau.......2007-06-01
This really is impressive music. Brian Transeau has always been at the front of the line for technological wizardry, but a lot of his tracks have lacked the kind of songwriting prowess that is sorely needed when writing anything electronic. His score to the movie "Stealth" was lackluster at best...
On a side note, the reviewer who falsely credited BT with the score to the Matrix movies should check his/her facts first. The score was by Don Davis, a wonderful band named Juno Reactor, and contained songs by Paul Oakenfold, Rob Dougan, and several rock bands, but absolutely no BT songs were on the soundtracks to any of the 3 movies or the "Animatrix" short film collection, or any of the video games (so far).
This is a really interesting album, containing 7 ambient tracks that tend to follow the Concerto style of establishing a theme, varying the theme, then returning to it. Most of these songs follow this pattern in some shape or form. A major theme in here is youth, particularly infantile youth. I believe that Kaia is the name of his daughter, and supposedly he had her in his arms for many parts of this writing process. Many of the melodies are very beautiful in that infantile sort of way, giving you the impression that they are lullabies of sorts.
They are wonderfully crafted with an infinite amount of detail. There are subtle changes to almost every piece in every sequence. This is best enjoyed with headphones or in surround, as many other reviewers have noted.
The only parts that didn't fit well with me were the power chord sections of "Good Morning Kaia" which clashed with the rest of the album. The jazz section of "Dynamic Symmetry" also sounded quite robotic and lifeless. Jazz does not fit in well with the kind of perfection of sound that BT uses, at least in this attempt.
Major highlights are the orchestral sections in "The Antikythera Mechanism", which are booming and powerful, and get torn apart cleverly by his editing. The other is the core of the song "1.618" (a BRAVE title for a song, I might add), which is this gorgeous hook at a walking pace that you could loop and listen to for 20 minutes.
Overall, wonderful sculpting and a dizzying array of effects make the replay value on this music through the roof. A bit more work on the last track and a little more life in the short jazz section would've made it near perfect.
OMFG.......2007-05-16
I dont really like the housey stuff by BT (or anyone) but this album has a classical sensibility and an epic feel that i love about other ambient electronica. If you like ambient electronica- this CD is perfectly crafted - I'm not joking - its like... f'n... perfect.
Amazing!.......2007-05-14
BT is a genious. This CD/DVD combo is a little different from a lot of his stuff I've heard in the past, but it is still excellent. The quality of the music on this CD MUST be listened to with good headphones to be truely appreciated! I am no audiophile, and I reguarly poke fun at their gigantic headphones, but in BT's case, this CD deserves the special treatment. You will miss a LOT of what he is including in his music if you listen with speakers. The DVD is also fantastic. The DTS surround makes it even better. It's great background video/music for a party. Do not download this from iTunes, buy the high quality CD/DVD and you won't be sorry!

Tech issus.......2006-01-30
I bought this album because I enjoyed the LP version I bought back in the 70's. The music is still very good but this CD version would not play in our DVD player / burner. Instead of playing in the newer technologies, it gave us access to some not so good art and photography by W. Carlos. It was necessary to copy the music from the cd to my PC and then burn a fresh CD to get it to play.
Switched-On Bach II.......2005-09-24
Once again, a great experience! Will continue to do business with you whenever the opportunity arises. Thanks.
30 years later, still controversial.......2004-05-26
Upon reviewing my predecessors' comments, I am amazed at the degree to which Wendy's orchestrations and performances still provoke listeners!
I was given the vinyl version for Christmas when I was ten years old, and basked in it regularly for years (the Brandenburg particularly made for fascinating headphone listening, and still does). Personally, this CD release is a joy long awaited, especially because of all the TLC lavished on those original analog masters. These recordings shimmer more than they ever did years ago.
On artistic merit: While the original "S-OB" contains inspired musicality and novelty in equal doses, and "The Well-Tempered Synthesizer" reflected a maturing of vision, I believe "S-OB II" represents the most consistently musical effort of Wendy's four Baroque releases. Even the inevitable "special effects" timbres here are more wry, and just plain feel natural. For example, the sly suggestion of a snare drum in one of the two-part inventions is a delightful auditory pun unique to Carlos' sensibilities. The treatment of "Sheep May Safely Graze" falls within the realm of a solo organ performance, but oh, for an organist to have these stops at their disposal!
Speaking of organs, Carlos has already acknowledged the role of her Yamaha Electone E-5, apparently acquired sometime between S-OB I and II. It was responsible for click tracks and continuo parts, and even those marvelous runs in the Brandenburg's cadenza section. Not to shatter anyone's romantic notions of Wendy exclusively slaving over a single-note instrument... but really, so what? A masterpiece is still a masterpiece.
Bach at his best!.......2004-05-19
I have long been a fan of this series by W. Carlos. I own all of this on vinyl, cassette and now CD. This is not an automated reproduction of some of Bach's fabulous works. Rachel Elkind and Carlos worked their fingers to the bone to get this music correct. Layer after layer; no loops. Thanks to the different sounds assigned to each voice, it is easier than ever to fully appreciate Bach's genius. The person who made the "Yamaha Organ" comment needs to do a little homework.
Understand what it is before you buy..........2003-11-30
This was one of my favorite albums when I was a kid. It opened up my creativity and launched my appreciation not only for Bach, but also for electronic music.
Don't listen to the reviews that say it's not as good as an acoustic orchestra. Duh: it's not intended to sound like that! And there are no "Yamaha organs" as another reviewer stated. This was all done way back on the original Moog: analog modules with actual patch cords, the height of analog subtractive synthesis. It's a unique sound that's distinctive from digital synths and is something of a lost art.
Combined with Wendy's (Walter at the time) masterful keyboard performances, the Switched-On Bach series is a really nifty thing.

Monster was an unflinching movie that took you to the edge of the abyss with Aileen Wournos, a prostitute who murdered seven of her customers in Florida in the 1980s. Director Patty Jenkins' film is a sympathetic portrait of Wournos and BT's (Brian Transeau) score ranges from hopeful to harrowing. Fans of BT's trance music won't find any of his familiar beats and techno strategies here, but a work that is just as immersive. Mixing ambient Americana, melancholic minimalism, and atonal atmospheres, this isn't the kind of score you might expect from a musician more associated with dance, trance, and pop music. But BT pulls out all the emotional stops here from the poignant opening theme, "Childhood Montage," with its haunting keyboard refrain, to the stomping guitar twang rave-up on "Ditch the Car." Instead of the usual soundtrack of truncated cues, BT has fleshed out his themes into extended works that segue through the disc. An additional bonus is a DVD-A 5:1 surround mix that puts you right in the middle of BT's spectral swirl. Adding an additional 9 tracks of music, BT paints a 360 degree sound world that is as enveloping as it is compelling. --John Diliberto

Great CD!.......2007-01-18
One of the most satisfying sets by BT. This is an evergreen set to relax with. Good mixing and track selections
Simply Haunting.......2007-01-16
I've never seen the movie Monster, nor do I want to. However, I'm a very big fan of BT. This CD is one of his best, by my account. It's a rollercoaster of a CD, some times cheery, others down-right desolate. His inclusion of the Hurdy Gurdy (however you spell it) makes for a very interesting flavor, and often is responsible for the sad, haunting tone. I don't get much chance to listen to the DTS disk, but what times I have, the surroud sound adds some great nuances. I recommend this CD as long as you're not suicidal, because this would be a great soundtrack to sit, think over your happy childhood, then wallow in your dispair as you bleed out.
p.s. I've heard a few songs in recent movie trailors. I wonder if they'll be included in those soundtracks, too.
Brilliant .......2005-06-04
Brilliant inspiration by a tragic life story. Inspiration which lead us to a consciousness expanding experience. Its intrinsic beauty lead our senses upward to ever higher levels where we feel deeply the fragility of human nature and the importance of nurturing compassion and unconditional forgiveness and love for all human beings.
Absolutely phenominal.......2005-04-09
I first heard this music when it was the Echoes CD of the month, and since then, I've been utterly hooked. This music is absolutely phenominal, not at all something one would expect from a horror movie, but he almost seems to make light of some of the tracks, and they all turned out very well.
Revolutionary.......2004-12-23
BT is a genius. He's one of the most innovative musicians of our generation, beginning as an architect of trance but never sitting still in one genre for too long. Somebody making movies noticed this, and let him do the score for the movie Monster. I hadn't seen the movie, but when I heard that he'd done the soundtrack I bought it immediately, sight unseen (so to speak). It didn't disappoint me.
First off, it's a two disc soundtrack. There's a DVD and a CD. The DVD is actually the primary medium for the soundtrack. It was composed for surround sound, and the DVD contains the soundtrack in DTS audio, as it was meant to be heard. It also has a stereo mix. It's about 2 hours long, which is another reason it was released on DVD, and it's pretty much a single work, with tracks fading into each other. Absolutely brilliant stuff. It's hard to believe it was composed by BT--it's not trance. It's very ambient, kind of like Eno, but with fascinating melodies and rhythms coming through often enough to make it more accessable than some other pure ambient music. It's played with real instruments, prominently featuring a hurdy-gurdy, but it has sounds and samples woven through it also. And the 5.1 is used to full effect, making it a completely immersive experience.
Of course, there's a CD with it as well. It contains a stereo mix of about half the tracks (mainly the more melodic ones), and it's great. Well worth the price of the disc even if you don't have the equipment to take advantage of the surround sound experience.
I'm getting a fairly hefty collection of soundtracks, and it's not often anymore that I'm really surprised by a movie score. This one did it for me. Just thought I'd share.

Hallo-wha?.......2006-04-19
Let me start by saying I've never listened to Steamroller before picking this up. I am a big fan of Halloween and have quite a collection of music/sound fx so naturally, this was a must buy when I saw it.
Strictly from a Halloween fan's point of view, I can't recommend this except maybe for a kids party. The synth on the tracks really removes any spookiness from the tunes and makes them fall short of Halloween-worthiness. Tocatta and Hall of the Mountain King are some of my absolute favorite classical pieces and here they are given a royal treatment...if they were produced on a Commodore 64, or Casio keyboard for you younger folk.
The FX disc isn't horrible, but it's below the average generic sound fx you find in the bargain bin. Again, not much scary except for the fact that I spent money on this.
If possible, check it out before you buy.
An interest take on the usual.......2005-11-06
I wasn't sure what I'd think of this from reading other reviews, but I really did like it. I'm not really familiar with Mannheim's other stuff (but if the rest of the Autumn cd is anything like Harvest Dance, I'm looking forward to getting it), so I didn't have any preconceived ideas. I have a lot of the classical pieces on other cds, but I like the different twist given to them here. And I did like the sound effect cd. Nicely spooky (I have enough other sound effects cds with screaming and muching ghouls, etc).
Could have been great but . . ........2004-10-15
As a big Steamroller fan, perhaps my hopes were set a little too high. I envisioned more original music (perhaps a more scarier vibe than the silly one this CD has to it) and maybe a few covered tunes. Chips originals (from the Fresh Aire series)found on this CD outshine the weak efforts put forth on the covered and rearranged tracks. The sound effects disc sets a great(and creepy)mood, that should had been followed through with some new and equally scary compositions.
If you're a die hard Mannheim fan (as in 'I just have to own everything Chip puts out') I say go for it. But otherwise spend your Halloween money elsewhere. Overall this is a forced and lazy effort.
It's not That bad..........2004-06-14
It's not scary. There, you have it, that's what it all boils down to. With a creepy cover like that, you'd think it would be terrifying! It's not, but it's not bad, either!
A lot of the songs sound kind of like low-budget MIDI tunes that are sometimes embedded in websites.. but I think that might have been what the Steamroller was going for. Kind of like a broken Music Box? Anyway, only a few sound low budget, the rest sound good, even a few are a little "eerie" but at the same time, there's a lot that pretty much remind me of something you would hear come out of sesame street toy. The sound effects are great, though.
There's a few songs that are bad. there's a few that are "babyish" but there's also Lots that really capture the mood of halloween and some of it's eerieness. I can't really recommend it for Halloween itself (maybe if you already have every halloween cd already) but I think any Chip Davis fan should give it a listen.
Tries to please everyone.......2004-06-02
One of the neat things about the holiday of Halloween is that it is so versatile. Where Christmas has a very straightforward story (Santa or Jesus, take your pick), Halloween can be many things. Some people see it as a sort of Mardi Gras atmosphere, where any kind of costumed theme is suitable. Others see it as a dark holiday, only suited gothic castles, zombies, and monsters. Still others celebrate it in the style of gory slasher movies, complete with deranged serial killers and buckets of blood. And then there is the non-scary childrens Halloween, where the ghosts are cute and jack-o-lanterns all have goofy grins.
This CD covers all these aspects of Halloween, which virtually garantees that no one will like every song. However, I would suggest that you pick and choose the tracks you like from the CD, as part of your overall Halloween soundtrack. You will probably find at least several tracks you like. And of you like Mannheim Steamroller, you will like most of them.

I found it!.......2007-05-26
Absolutely amazing! I used to listen to this cd all the time as a young teen. It has some really amazing tracks that bring back lots of memories! If your interested in this cd when you get it check out track 7 by Keoki on disc one. Disc two is my favorite, check out tracks 2, 5, (my fave) 6, and 10. PLUR
The year techno was positioned to be "the next big thing"..........2006-10-26
I bought this when it first came out having listened to early techno such as Eon and early Moby, having attended some raves once they had crept out of the underground. So I was merely dabbling, having no idea until years later just what techno was all about. So I picked up this CD. The fact it was a compilation from K-Tel and the fact that one of the songs on here - Propellerheads "Take California" - was up for a grammy, electronic music being a new category is indicative of the fact that "electronica" was poised to be the next big thing. Fortunately, it never became such and it still remains relatively underground, Moby aside.
I am astounded at how well of a representation of electronica is contained in this disc. Many of the artists such as The Chemical Brothers, BT, Rabbit in the Moon, Fatboy Slim, The Prodigy and Underworld, went even further on their way to success. Even a tune by Derrick May, one of the legends of techno out of Detroit, is on this compilation. A few songs are more or less disposable or the artist could have been better represented but for the most part this CD does a great service to a history of techno right at its cusp of going popular.
It's not a continuous mix and I find it hard to listen to the entire thing at one sitting but it's a great way to go back and it's also a great to remind yourself of how far this type of music has come.
Go To The Digital Empire...........2005-01-08
...put some electronica in your CD collection. This is the start of the popular DE electronica/trance/trip hop series and you can't go wrong with some of the names featured here--Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, Frankie Knuckles--explosions in the art of noise. It will definitely help make you an electronica fan.
Superb 2-Disc Compilation.......2003-06-08
"Digital Empire: Electronica's Best" is, overall, a superb 2-disc compilation of mainstream electronica/techno songs from the late 1990s ('95 - '98). With so many popular bands/artists featured on here, it's easy to please most listeners.
Disc One starts off with one of my favorite songs and bands on here: "No Good (Start the Dance)" by The Prodigy. It's an almost un-Prodigy-like track--particularly if you're used to their songs like "Firestarter" and "Smack My B*tch Up"--mainly because of the female vocals.
A few of my other favorites on Disc One are pretty much the obvious choices: "Busy Child" by The Crystal Method, "Roots" by Mark Verbos (ok, not so obvious), and "Choose Life" by PF Project featuring Ewan McGregor from the movie "Trainspotting" (no f-ing four-letter UK swears here, though; it's all censored). In my opinion, this latter track (#11) should have traded places with the last track on Disc One: "Shnowed In" by Hawke. Number 12's ok (though I tend to forget it and turn the CD off after 11), but 11 would have made a better finale.
Disc Two, as well, opens with another good song: "Block Rockin' Beats" by The Chemical Brothers. Like Disc One, it's full of mainstream, high-energy songs (like a few of my faves: "Going Out of My Head" by Fatboy Slim, "One 4 Da Head" by Buzz Fiend, "414" by Doormouse, and "Born Slippy" by Underworld--yet another track off the "Trainspotting" soundtrack), as well as some slower, more mellower tracks, such as two gems that come to mind: "Subconscious" by Rabbit in the Moon and "Flaming June" by BT.
Together, these two CDs provide well over two hours of mostly high-energy electronica music. If you're a fan of more than a handful of bands/artists on here, then "Digital Empire: Electronica's Best" is definitely a must-have. You'll love it. Also recommended: all the other "Digital Empire" CDs.
Best CD ever.......2003-01-21
As the subject says, this is the best cd ever. I am a techno junkie, and have always bought cds like this, but most end up pretty bad. Then I got this one, and was blown away. There is not *one* bad track on the entire 2 CD set! I highly, highly reccomend Digital Empire. You won't be dissapointed.

Album Description
"Empire has tapped into something vital, dangerous, and all-too-absent from so much rock music today ... this isn't the death of rock `n' roll but a blasting, needle-in-the-red affirmation of its power. Turn it up." - KERRANG
"Simply a great punk rock record." - TERRORIZER
"Empire's keen intelligence ... blazes through every track in a merciless assault on apathy that's also strangely optimistic, like a dove bearing a petrol bomb. The revolution may not be televised, but it's definitely been soundtracked." - NME
"While he may not be Atari or teenage anymore, Alec Empire is still running riot. This is guitar-heavy industrial punk aggression - some of the most forceful music Empire has written since the ATR breakthrough Future of War album - over which he pours forth disquisition and diatribe, railing against totalitarianism and authority in all its guises." - ROCKSOUND
Alec Empire is many things to many people: a man with an extraordinary recording history, the musical revolutionary behind avant-garde noise-punk outfit Atari Teenage Riot, an electronic music experimentalist who has made records on a Gameboy, and a consummate musician who has worked with an extraordinarily broad range of peers. He has remixed artists as diverse as blues legend R.L. Burnside, Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore, Björk, Rob Zombie, The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Slayer, Einstürzende Neubauten, and members of the new hip-hop generation like Company Flow and Prince Paul's Handsome Boy Modeling School. He has toured with Rage Against the Machine, Wu-Tang Clan, Beck, Ministry, and Nine Inch Nails.
Alec Empire's new album, Futurist, is the most fully integrated vision of his twenty-first century rebellion yet. A blistering alliance of primitive punk fury and advanced technological overload, Futurist heralds the return of the guitar to the center of Empire's musical vision. The characteristic shockwave aggression of his previous outings is still channeled for maximum impact, but the gun-to-temple blasts of tracks like "Gotta Get Out" and "Vertigo" deliver their powder-keg payloads with a newly discovered blood rush of excitement. Futurist is the most brutally uplifting Empire has ever sounded.

A bit of a shock, but it is signature Alec Empire!.......2006-10-20
When I got Alec Empire's new cd, The Futurist, I was shocked that it was full of guitars and not the usual "sampled guitars" and uber-heavy distorted electronic beats I love Digital Hardcore for. But, after a second listen, I am hooked to this CD!! The stand out tracks for me are Kiss of Death (#1) and Vertigo (#6). If you are sick and tired of the cliched punk scene and the every growing boring electronic scene, check out The Futurist. Trust me, you will see the future and it doesn't look all that good! At least you can thrash to it with impunity!

wow.. just... wow.......2003-05-05
i gave this one 4 out of 5 cuz regardless of your taste, this cd has such a wide variety that SOMETHING isnt going to be cool for you.
lemme jus say that Back On a Mission (DJ Dan Remix) is one of the best house tunes ive heard in quite a long time oh WOW what a buildup! aside from that, there are quite a few killers on this collection. pick it up!
Quite a Well-Rounded compilation........2000-07-10
Disc one, opening up with "Crystal Method's Comin' Back" an excellent track! Although, I must admit it gets repetitive after a while. Its hardly one of the highlights of this compilation. The next two tracks are kewl within themselves. You have to listen to them for a while to "catch on" Propellerheads remix of Velvet Pants track four, isn't really impressive... Still its a good track for the compilation. I think the original is like 10x better though. Frankie hits you constantly with claps on the fifth track, I dont recommend that one for pleasurable listening. If you like headaches, well... the rest of disc one besides "GFS's Creep" which seems to be a form of D&B, I kinda like to listen to it while im chilling out, and "Deep Sky's Legend" If you are a fan of dreamy trance. This song kicks you have to hear it, it's on my favorites list!
Disc two is definitely the better of the two! It opens up with some happy techno music I dont even really want to analyze... I guess if your in a really trippy mood... Anyways, Track Two *Another highlight of this compilation* Roni Size keeps you moving with this track, its a killer! From the beginning he starts out relatively slow.....building you up for this total lapse into tha kewlest beat! Its definitely going to make you move! The Third track, a remix by the chemical brothers (I find it to be apparent) They just have a way of twisting the beat into their own sound. Its a very likable track, a little selective but listen to it a few times you will start to love it. Now, the fourth track is a Dance killer. From the beginning the beats seem to be sending earthquakes right through the floor! Turn this shi0t up because the track is going to level you! The Mantronik Track *highlight of the compilation*, has some of the coolest vocals you will ever hear, this track definitely did "blow my mind" Its VERY addictive. Even if you dont buy this compilation, hear this track because its worth your attention! Cirrus track, on a mission... not very kewl... its a little too cluttery sounding for me. Expansion Union! Playing with lightning! This track, omg talk about building the sound, throwing you all over the place! Another *highlight of the compilation*. Juan Atkin's skyway is a chill out track...play it low and stay layed back... Well, we made it to the absolute *best track of the compilation* Transeau's Godspeed. This guy does trance like nobody else, besides maybe van Dyk. BT's trance is a little less traditional but nonetheless very enjoyable! Listen for the climatic sound building.... The highlight of all trance tracks. That drum roll prelude, you know? The next two tracks are pretty kewl but not worth noting, the last track of the compilation, Dont stop by the freestylers... Pretty uplifting I would say! It sounds like it could be a cheerleader music or something but its worth a listen!
Well you've heard my direct opinion on this compilation. Go ahead. Buy it. I have bought lots of music and I recommend this compilation to you. It has those tracks that "keep it active in your cd player" Peace all.....
Excellent CD.......2000-04-15
"Aftermath" features the next step from "Digital Empire-Electronica's Best". Released in the same year, this cd features more selections from the previous cd's artists. The fatboy slim "big beat" edits are definitly my favorite on all the "Digital Empire" cd's. On this cd, BT's "Godspeed" definitly gets my attention as well as "Florr.i.d.a", "Deep Sky" and definitly Crystal Methods "Coming Back". If you like the first DE cd, you'll like this cd. Check it out! Bi Bi from BoBo
11 OUT OF 10!.......1999-12-23
This compilation gets bonus points from me. The previous compilation was a "best of" set, giving new electronica fans a wide variety to listen to. Meanwhile DE II takes it a step further, exploring smoother and harder sounds than before.
All the returning artists did well with their second contributions, except for Rabbit in the Moon. "Floori.d.a" lacked the consistency of their previous releases on "Digital Empire" and "Urbal Beats" (another great comp). It wasn't what I expected to hear from past comps, but was okay.
Roni Size's "It's Jazzy" did excellent with its fast moving drum loops and sharp cuts into the sound.
But the highlight of it all was probably the contrast between neighboring songs "Playing With Lightning" by Expansion Union and "Skyway" by Infiniti. It goes from the hardest sound to the smoothest sound on the album and they (strangely enough) fit together in the lineup like key to lock.
And finally, I received a nice little surprise inside the 2 CD set--a CD sampler titled "In The Mix," which covered more of the club scene that DE II didn't really cover.
So, considering the total package deal, I give it an 11 out of 10 with a bonus point for it's depth and value.
A wonderful CD With GOOD music for your money!.......1999-07-13
This double CD really pleased me when I bought it for 13$ and It was a even bigger suprise when I got the 3rd CD for free! Buy these CDs!

Digital Prophecy, Indeed!!.......2003-11-13
Warning! . . .
I'm frontloading this review with a perspective that is idiosyncratic, heavy-handed, and probably unsustainable. Nevertheless, I proceed, not without trepidation.
A little background. I am a historic orthodox Christian. I stake out this ground because I believe Christianity is true. That is, I believe that Jesus of Nazareth was who he claimed to be, the Messiah of God, the one sent to fulfill the covenant promises of his God, YHWH, to Israel, and, consequently, to all of humankind.
My mentors in this are N. T. Wright, Ben Meyer, and Ed Sanders (the latter somewhat unwittingly). Secondary sources include Bernard Lonergan, Jean-Luc Marion, and Rene Girard. Whether or not one affirms this approach, this is a position sustainable at the highest levels of intellectual integrity and inquiry.
What on earth and in heaven (if you are not a died-in-the-wool atheist), you might ask, bearing does such a perspective have on a popular world-jazz disc such as the one under consideration?
Everything.
You see, ever since the founding of Israel, world attention has been focused on Islam, the events of 9/11 simply serving to magnify the scope and stakes involved in the struggle between the West and the world of the Prophet.
Some more context. A brilliant expatriate Arab, Fouad Ajami, resident scholar at Johns Hopkins University, frequent commentator on network American television re things Islamic, has written a luminous book, The Dream Palace of the Arabs, succinctly summarizing the Islamic dilemma as it relates to the religion of the Prophet at the dawning of the third millennium. His thesis is rather simple: the efforts of liberal democratic Arabs to create an Islam that was conversant with and open to the insights of Western liberal democracy ended in failure.
But must it remain so? Is there not a way in which Islam can drag itself into the 21st century, become a dialogic partner in the great issues separating East and West--namely, questions regarding origins, societal organization, and religious truth?
And that's where this remarkable, nay, transcendent, disc comes in. What we have here (along with, to a lesser extent, Tabla Beat Science and other East/West amalgams) is nothing less that a grass-roots effort to drag the religion of the Prophet into the present.
Does it work? Yes, spectacularly--at least, from a purely musical standpoint (the religious issues I leave to the scholars). What we have here is luminous oud-playing mapped onto some kind of glorious ambient-jazz-totally-hip-yet-sans-fawning aesthetic: the sly electronics of Eivind Aarset, the too-cool pianisms and electronic effects of that bold pioneer, Bugge Wesseltoft, the mesmeric bansuri flute of Ronu Majumdar, the healing(?) percussion and programming of Rune Arensen, the "additional production" of Steve Arguelles. Combine that with what to me is the defining oud style of all contemporary players (it sounds as if Dhafer employs a gut-string rather than metal-string approach, lending a marvelously earthy and organic sound to his instrument), plus a spellbinding vocal approach, and you have the makings of an authentic musical marriage of East and West.
What distinguishes this disc from any other I've heard is its ability to remain true to its Arabic roots (see the quotation from the artist on the jewel box notes: "The last breath I take will still be in Arabic") while authentically encountering Western musics in an open-minded fashion.
Could this possibly be a template for future East/West reconcillation? Could this type of approach provide the basis for a lasting rapprochement between the Arabic world and Christendom? I don't know. What I do know is that that this disc transcends politics, religion, and society with its beauty, soul, and generosity.
In any case, if you have the slightest interest in the grave issues facing East and West, as well as even the faintest glimmering of curiosity about what's happening in progressive Arabic musical circles, you will want to rush out an procure a copy of the transcendent disc.
Kneeling as a supplicant...........2003-11-11
I guess that you are just going to love this whole CD, there is a song for every mood, a symphony to entertain our Cosmic Brains. Thanks Dhafer.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent album from the new Acura spokesman.......2005-03-12
I guess violent anarchist revolution is out of fashion with 'The Kids' these days and Germany's most outspoken mother's boy is at the forefront of the new materialism (I'm talking about the car advert in case it wasn't obvious).
Approaching 40 and with no sign of receiving the beating he so richly deserves Alec Empire can churn this stuff out indefinitely.
Which is a good thing as far as I'm concerned and all irony aside this album rocks harder than almost anything else out there despite the fact that sarcastic middle-aged, middle-class ex-student lefties like me are probably a sizable part of this album's audience.
Smartest album yet.......2005-01-17
I have always found that Alec's solo stuff seemws smarter and much more interesting (cranial) than his more anarchist ATR stuff. that sounds more like pissed off late teen music. What I don't understand is the comparisons to ATR here , specially since "destroyer" sounds more ATR than this by far.
The first disk IMHO seems to be the real meat of this collection, in fact I was under the impression that the second disk was a bonus. At first listen I though it was more of the same Loud distorted hardcore we have grown to expect recently from alec, but something with this album actually clicked with me. the layers and the noise really flow from one point to the next at a much smoother pace. it "fits" the rage and the mood that alec goes for without the jagged edges that do usually stick out and make you overdose really fast. the broken or unfinished song structures that plague earlier albums are not found here. the songs flow from one to the next without trainwreaking. giving all this noise and distortion (and huge beats) more room to relax.
I wasn't expecting more than another great album thats great for high speeds and high volumes, what I got was one of the most intelligent albums of the year
Half of this is good.......2003-08-26
I don't own the CD because as far as I'm concerned CD 1 is an absolute mess. But then bear in mind I wouldn't class myself as an Alec Empire fan because there are those CDs ( like CD1 ) which really do nothing but cause migraines and headaches. Saying this however will make people look down on me and have this superior attitude towards me because they'll think " I just don't understand art " or some[thing] like that. All I will say is that to my ears it's a bloody racket and that's that! Still go ahead if you want to be feeling like you could puke up blood and have a wiry taste in your mouth
CD2 however I got taped from my girlfriend is much better ( incidentally she hates that CD but prefers CD1 - well we always have our differences ;) ) and I found this to be much better. The music is much better and although at times it lapses into "abstract freeform" ( just random noodles without any beat ) the music is much more to my liking.
Then again I suppose this is the charm of listening to Alec Empire and his schizophrenic back catalogue. You never know what you're going to get ( touch of the Forrest Gump there ). It's only a matter of taste to see which side you like the most. I come out on CD2 but there are many people who wouldn't agree with me. I put it down to my dislike for anything resembling current rock music and since CD1 shows that along with fusing it with gabba and industrial.....it only serves to make that headache worse
Well I don't know if this review will win over any friends but this is my own personal opinion
absolutely awesome.......2003-07-05
it's hard to pay this album out because its from a guy who was no less than IN atari teenage riot. it's similar to ATR but better in some respects while still managing to be fresh and clever. alec is an amazing producer parralleled only by trent reznor.
definately get this.
eclectic.......2003-02-03
People need to respect Alec's eclecticism. He has made an album that is of better quality than any of atari teenage riot's work. but I like Slayer, so what do I know?
