This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

The Dale Warland Singers are my benchmark by which I judge all other choirs. The uniformity of sound, blend, and precise entrances, uniformity are incredible - almost inhuman. Excluding the all male Chanticleer from the roster, this was the finest choir in America. Now that they have broken up, buy all of their CD's you won't be disappointed!

A project like this one inevitably highlights the skill of arrangers, and Dale Warland has selected some of the most talented anywhere. Most of these selections will be familiar to listeners, but I doubt most people have heard, for example, "Red River Valley" in Carol Barnett's haunting version here, and ditto for her magnificent "Deep River."

The disc opens with a spectacular, panoramic "Shenandoah" that takes maximum advantage of the Dale Warland Singers' refined sound, and things only get better (if that's possible). Other favorites are a cheery, fizzing "Nelly Bly" and Mark Keller's strong reworking of Stephen Foster's "Hard Times Come Again No More."

Throughout the recording, the freshness of the arrangements is matched by the irresistible singing. This group is known for its outstanding performances and recordings, but this must be counted as one of their all-time best. The sound quality is terrific, capturing the gorgeous blend and precision of the group in a natural-sounding acoustic. Just stunning.

The Dale Warland Singers (DWS) are among the relatively few musical professionals, who by their aesthetic standards and demonstrated artistry, have taken the less traveled and narrow road to exemplary artistic excellence.

The sound quality and acoustics are excellently engineered in this 20-bit original recording. The most delicately blend and inflection of the singers' voice can be heard. This sheaf of choral works has once existed in real space and time in the kaleidoscopic folklife of past generations. In recording the "Blue Wheat", the 40-member DWS, the creme de la creme of professional choral ensembles, has elevated the common oral tradition of American folk music into a rarified choral art form a capella "in the style of the chapel."

If the soul of the DWS is a capella singing, then Warland and the arrangers are the wings of the same soul. Among the kapellmeisters whose arrangements have graced this folksong anthology are the late Norman Luboff and Roger Wagner. Also included in this album are contemporary arrangements by other esteemed composers: John Rutter (conductor of The Cambridge Singers), Carol Barnett (the DWS resident composer from 1992 to 2001), and Stephen Paulus.

Gertrude Stein is famous for saying of her childhood home, Oakland, California, "When you get there, there's no there there." Purportedly, Stein opined this city by the San Francisco Bay lacked a defining sense of place. Bel canto notwithstanding, the folk melodies of "Blue Wheat" invoke a longing for something no longer possible. The abyss between the America today and the its past is impossible to bridge. Already, we have yielded to the abstractness of political correctness. Our past is either neglected, actively destroyed, or selectively museumed. We do not live in an understood land and culture. There is no there here in the presence of this music. It is only the poignancy of the moment that these beautifully rendered tunes live in our mind. We have to accept this reality as part and parcel of our rootlessness.

If the Oakland Raiders do make it to and win the Superbowl in 2003, there is a there there for some in the football community, albeit fleeting.

Most CD recordings of choral music do not attract the attention of the population at large, and "Harvest Home" is clearly an exception. Word came to me about this remarkable album through a fellow faculty member at the Boston Conservatory. He was rightly proud of having written two of the arrangements, but prouder still of the fact that it had become a red-hot bestseller through the word-of-mouth network of choristers all over the country. Needless to say, I was curious but a bit skeptical. Generally, things that become that popular have an aesthetic downside. I ordered my copy from Amazon and got it just before I left to go to a concert with a couple of musician friends. We were frankly thrilled with the quality of the singing, the beautifully shaped nuances, and the richness of the several of the arrangements. It is clear that its popularity among choral singers has to do with the musical material, as with its execution. The arrangements are based on mostly religious American folk songs and show off the delicate intonational skills of Dale Warland's legendary group. It's just the kind of thing that church choir members can really appreciate, but unfortunately cannot stand up to repeated listing -- it has to be the work of great composers for me to hear recordings over and over again. Nevertheless, I played it for my choral group, and they jumped all over it. That's the market audience. Bravo, Mr. Warland.

I've been a fan of the Dale Warland Singers for a long time, and attended many of their concerts. This recording displays perfectly what the choir was capable of. I listen to it constantly. Many of these arrangements are the best I've heard of these songs. "Deep River" is better than that of Chanticleer or Cantus. "She'll be Comin Round the Mountain" is really fun. I got the chance to sing it a few years ago and will never forget it. You NEED to buy this CD. It's well worth the money.

I purchased this on a whim and it is been in my 5-disc player ever since. I have always loved choral settings of folk songs and hymns (with one exception - "The Water is Wide" should never ever ever be sung by a chorus - it doesn't work, but it is the only track I skip on this disc). The selections are all old favorites in often harmonically lush arrangements. Hawley's arrangement of "Not One Sparrow" is transcendent and has become my morning prayer, "Lay Me Low" my evening meditation. The singing is as near perfect as can be, musicality is stunning, and technical merits are high. I cannot recommend this disc enough.

On Harvest Home, the Dale Warland Singers delve into the rich legacy of mostly American sacred and folk music. With the lush vocal orchestrations and thoughtful arrangements, many of these familiar songs take on new life and emotional depth.

As a boy, I grew up in the Mennonite church tradition and one of the distinctive things about our church services was the a cappella 4-part harmony. As I got older, I thought this was a bit odd and wished we used instruments in church like most people. In looking back now, I am thankful for that tradition and what it taught me about music and harmony.

Throughout high school I was involved with choral groups, doing several programs each year. The first year after high school I spent a few months at a religious school that had a long-standing tradition of chorale music. I well remember the hours of rehearsal to get the song just right, practicing enunciation and dynamics and expression.

So when I hear a group like the Dale Warland Singers, I have a small insight into the dedication it takes to do choral music at the level of this recording. These are singers and a director at the top of their game, with attention to detail everywhere, creativity in the arrangements and technical brilliance. And what a vocal range, with "how low can they go" bass and sopranos that my normal laptop headphones have trouble reproducing without distortion.

I've long been a fan of spirituals; they are at times moving to hear, at times playful and fun (and can be even more fun to sing). This album features a couple of my favorites: "Shall We Gather At The River" and "Deep River". Upon first hearing this rendition of the latter, I was nearly moved to tears by the stark beauty and emotional depth of this arrangement. It's a prime example of the power of music to take us places emotionally and connect us with the deeper feelings and longings of the soul.

In addition to several spirituals, there is a unique variety of other religious pieces pulled from the traditions of Quakers and Baptists among others. The album also mines some rich treasures from the Shaker tradition, including the comforting "Not One Sparrow Is Forgotten" and the poignant tenderness of "Lay Me Low', with the simple text of

Lay me low where the Lord can find me, where the Lord can own me, where the Lord can bless me

Not everything leans towards the serious or sacred though. A fun, light-hearted arrangement of "She'll Be Comin' Round The Mountain" (arr. by Emma Lou Diemer) features bouncing bass lines and lots of syncopation and sibilance to keep things interesting. And the traditional Dixie folk song "Cindy" tells the story of a heartsick man with tongue-in-cheek lyrics that playfully bounce from part to part.

The liner notes are exceptional, with lots of helpful historic and musical notes on the various selections. This is one of the final albums from The Dale Warland Singers after 31 years. The group disbanded in May 2004 so that the founder Dale Warland could focus more on teaching, consulting and guest conducting. He certainly has left his mark on the choral landscape and this recording is no exception. Highly recommended if you appreciate choral music, especially traditional folk and sacred selections.

Deep Purple was the first band to note that heavy metal and classical music share a certain deluded grandeur and attempted to combine the two. While what resulted--specifically, their Concerto for Group and Orchestra--was pretty fearful stuff, it did, for better or for worse, pave the way for a generation of classically influenced heavy-rock bands: King Crimson, Yes, and Queen, among others. The concerto on this live CD appears alongside a bunch of the Purple's more genteel songs they played at the Royal Albert Hall, a show that celebrated their 30th anniversary of their first appearance there. Even if you are not a Deep Purple fan this one is worth the investment. Whilst a little of the visual could be improved it's all there and the audio is of good quality. Butterfly Ball is a real hoot and if you don't enjoy that then you don't like music!
I reall contrast to the 1969 version of the Concertos where the conductor atually enjoys the whole experience.
Go for it!

The Amazon reviewer was right: the first several songs on CD 1 was very laid back, reminding me of Division-Bell-Era Pink Floyd. (Boring!) Didn't hear drums until the third or fourth track, then it was ANYTHING but rock beats. What made S & M so great is that Metallica didn't write BALLADS or NOVELTY SONGS for their production: they rocked on with what they had on hand. Deep Purple wrote some of the hardest rocking songs in the R&R/Heavy Metal library (Mandrake Root, Space Truckin, Child in Time), and so it's MHO that they should have employed them as orchestra pieces: overall, they should have rocked the whole time.

Of course, Steve Morse was an odd substitute for Richie Blackmore, but stalwarts Ian Gillian and Jon Lord was in good form that night. The record doesn't start consistently rocking until WRING THAT NECK at the end of CD 1. (Kind of thinking about it, I would have liked to wring the necks of those who made the decisions to program and preserve this somewhat idiotic concert...ha, just kidding.)

On CD 2, I thought the concerto was pretty well executed (esp. the first movement) and the last couple songs on the album (esp Ted the Mechanic and Smoke on the Water) were well orchestrated and played. I guess I would give this album 4 stars if they only released CD2 and lowered the price.

the reviewers below dont know what would they say,......this cd is a remake of concerto for group orchestra what the band did in 1969. the place took in the royal albert hall london 1999. I saw the performance in germany 2000 with the george enescu orchestra.
The result is amazing,...buy the cd!

This is NOT Deep Purple nor was the experience I had listening to them in concert (Summer 2002) -Nashville. This is a watered- down version of one of the best bands to ever grace the planet.Dio is a great vocalist and "smoked" them live in Nashville. Steve Morse is a great guitarist but his bluesy rendition of the poweful rhythm guitar parts in Smoke On the Water were a joke! ... your instrumental that was a question mark for the new album was the best thing I heard that night!! ... Dio and the Scorpions were great!

not worth the money! just because your a fan of steve morse,dosn't mean that your also a fan of d p. here they jumped on the trendy band wagon like yngwie,kansas scorpion,etc.i paid twice the amount as the regular cd for stress fest xtra tracks only to here i xtra song,thatwasn't even written by steve.here,it's almost the same situation.the only true s m .song,is t i o a t p.how many times does he have to re-record this and play it exactly like in 1978.i wish that s m would go back to doing solo work.his music was as interessting as george lynch,satch,vai,etc.i gave this 2 stars because i like steve,but that dosn't necessarilly mean that i like orchestra music,or deep purple.

The idiot from Virginia thought it a bit strange that an American black man would give the communists a chance. Looking back from modern perspective is easier than what he had to go on in the thirtes. Gee, I wonder why a black man would do that after all that southern hospitality, segregation, and steady work you gave the "black folk". Not to mention all those nighttime campfires you had going in their honor.
While I might be from New York I certainly would not be called a bleeding heart liberal but I can certainly understand why the poor soul was looking elsewhere. You are either ignorant of history and its influences on people or you are a totally unsympathetic jackass!!

I own several Robeson recordings and purchased this one with high hopes as it has a great selection of tracks. Unfortunately given the excellent recording quality of "Songs for Free Men" and "The Paul Robeson Oddyssey", the remasters from what I assume are 78's and possibly radio are a let down and mar what could have been an excellent album.

This 2 CD set of Paul Robeson is the definitive collection providing a decent overview of his work in 50 tracks all wonderfully restored from 78s as usual for ASV, with spirituals, show tunes, Shakespeare-like readings, and more done with a trademark bass voice and orchestration that backs up Paul perfectly and he would later be one of the first civil rights activists. The first disc is a reissue of the single disc "Ol' Man River-His 25 Greatest" on ASV containing "Ol' Man River," "Mighty Like a Rose," "Joshua Fit De Battle Ob Jericho," "Carry Me Back To Green Pastures," "Lazy Bones," and many more classics which is also available here at Amazon for those who only want a single disc of Paul's work and the 2nd disc contains 25 more classics including "Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen," "The Old Folks At Home," "My Old Kentucky Home," "Wagon Wheels," "Git On Board, Little Children," and many more. In other words, all 50 of these tracks are essential to any early pop, folk, gospel, blues, etc. music fan and this is the set to introduce yourself to his work in a convenient 2 CD package with the usual great liner notes and details on the original 78s ASV provides with each CD released in their Living Era series.

This is probably the one CD in my collection that has mesmerized me the most. It is just a shame this band got almost no airplay in the US. The are probably the most under-rated band of all time.

It was 1990 in Mesa, Arizona I was working at Tower records. The sales rep from the major record label droped off some Cd's to play in the store as demos. I played this one and from the first time I heard this CD I was completely drawn to it. Everytime I played it in the store I sold a copy.

"Highway 5" is hauntingly beautiful, one of the most brilliant songs ever.

"Denial" is my second fave on the album. "although my throat is parched and dry, it's gonna sing you home" is the BEST line ever! The acoustic guitar and his voice in this was just awesome.

"Delta Rain" is a lovely balled, my 3rd fave. The Perry sister who sang with him has the voice of an angel.

William Topley's voice is so sexy, so raw and pure. This is one of the best albums EVER made.

I also own a follow up album "Locust's and wild honey" which was also good but not near as good as POTDW. This band broke up shortly thereafter.

I was in England in 1997 and heard "Highway 5" on a British radio station and was so excited!

Here's a funny story. One day a few years ago I was laying out at my parents pool, I had this CD blasting. Their neighbor, who I had never met, popped his head over the fence and asked me what band it was, he really was digging the tunes!

This album is pure perfection, a work or art, a masterpiece.

I believe it was 1991, and we were living in St. Louis. I was in a low paying job, and my wife was not working, as she had just had our child a couple of months earlier. We had very little money, and weren't going to concerts at the time, something we both missed very much. One of the local radio stations came on with an ad that said they were hosting a FREE concert by some group called "The Blessing" at our favorite local concert venue/club. Even though I had not heard of the group the FREE part got my attention. I surprised my wife with tickets and we went. It turned out to be one of the best concerts we've ever been to. The songs were fantastic and the playing was first-rate. What made this show stand out, though, was William Topley. His voice was probably the best live voice I have ever heard. What was most amazing of all was that I have seen other singers who sang their lungs out and raised the roof - and when they were done, they looked like they had spent eight hours swinging an axe! Not Topley! He sang with this powerful voice, and when the show was done, he looked like he wasn't even breaking a sweat! Amazing! We now live in another part of the country, but I keep looking for when he might come this way in concert. We will go in a heartbeat, and now, we can even afford the tickets!!!

This band were rated by Dire Straits as one of the best bands ever. The singer William Topley was described by Aretha Franklin's producer as "the best vocal I have ever heard"
Hurricane room is a work of genius. Shame the record company that dropped this band had no idea what they really had. An absolutely magnificient peice of work.

Was around 1990 when I worked at a recording studio in New York called The Power Station. a producer name Niel Dorfsman (Dire Straits, Sting, Springsteen etc) was working on some project (cant remember what it was) in studio A, after they wrapped for the day Niel threaded a tape of a guy called Little William (that was the project name at the time). I remember as we were breaking down the studio we all ended up making our way into the control room and listening, thinking this guy had an insturment and would be huge someday. Then again we saw so many great bands come thru and never heard anything from them afterwards, and so much crap that was huge. When Dorfsman is involved with a project it always sounds awesome like this album does so many years later, and your expecting to hear about it. Unfortunately almost nobody knows who The Blessing were. Of all the people that Ive told to buy this album, Ive never heard anyone complain. Ive even told people that I would pay for their wasted money if they didnt like it. Everyone knows of a band that never got the attention they deserved: this one tops my list.

After hearing Delta Rain for the first time, I was haunted by it; that, as well as the fact that I couldn't find out who the artist was. Time past, and I find myself having dinner with some friends in England, with a particularly nice tape playing in the other room. I was involved in Conversation, and, didn't mention the music until Delta Rain came on, and, I just about jumped out of my chair. My hosts told me all about it. Then, they asked me to pick up the CD in the States for them. To this point, I thought the artist was American, due to the atmosphere that the music set for me. Needless to say, it was almost totally unavailable, aside from an import that went for around $45. I passed. Give it two more years. I am in a thrift store in Colorado Springs, digging through a pile of used tapes, when I come across a brand new cassette, still in the plastic. It was like provedence, finding this tape. Talk about a diamond hiding Among the rough. I never found the CD for my pals in the UK, but, I am on my 2nd tape, and, have just ordered the CD for myself. This jewel will last a lifetime. Wm. Topley is definitely an unsung master.

      This appears to have been an attempt to pull together something that would look like a "Greatest Hits" package after the band's long dry spell was broken by the very minor hit song "Knockin' At Your Back Door", which had some mildly clever PG/R-rated lyrical twists and a bit of a melody.

      But this album is more of a "bait and switch" than a "Greatest Hits" album.

      If you're looking for the version of "Hush" that's usually played on
      the radio, this isn't it. It's not even the same vocalist.

      And if you're looking for the version of "Smoke On The Water" that's
      usually played on the radio, this isn't it, either.

      "Dead Or Alive" is energetic, and the lead guitar and keyboard hearken back to the best of the band's earlier work, but overall this song is more of an attempt to be loud than to be good. Similarly, "Wasted Sunsets" has some nice lead guitar work, but I never find myself bothering to pull it off the shelf and put it into the CD player.

      "Mitzi Dupree" is annoying, and I just skip over "Strangeways".

      The live version of "Woman From Tokyo" fizzles out, as though both the
      band and the recording engineer lost interest in finishing the song.

      If you've heard a few Deep Purple songs (e.g. "Smoke On The Water") on the radio, and you think you might get interested in the band, I'd start with the album "Machine Head" -- and I'd never get far enough down the list to reach this album.

      This is a good album of Deep Purple. I like it when he says "I've been drunk since nine o'clock in the morning to nine o'clock in the morning" in "Smoke on the Water".

      The tracks on this disc are lifted from 3 albums: 1984's "Perfect Strangers", 1987's "The House Of Blue Light", and the live album "Nobody's Perfect" from 1988.

      The track selection is fair, but there's already a number of other compilations on the market focusing on those very same 3 albums (e.g. "Child In Time", "Knocking At Your Back Door", "Under The Gun", "Rock Giants" and "Progression")

      And this one is the shortest! If you're interested in a "best of" for those albums, I suggest "Under The Gun" (79 minutes), and it also includes the track "Perfect Strangers"...
