Customer Reviews:
Simply one of the most STUNNING albums, EVER!.......2007-07-12
Andreas Vollenweider, quite simply, is one of the most talented musicians that I have ever had the opportunity to listen to.
I first became familiar with him back in the 80's when Johnny Carson had him as a special guest on the Tonight Show. At the time, this album was about to be released, and he played several selections from it, and I was blown away, completely. If you are not familiar with Andreas, he plays the Electric Harp, and it is so haunting, eerie, almost percussive at moments....nothing like it!
I have always stayed "up" with his releases, and had all of them on vinyl, then cd, and now, on enhanced or remastered cd. Of all of them, this is simply the very best.
My favorite thing to do is to put this on my surround system, turn off all the lights, curl up on the couch in the dark in a fuzzy cover, and simply "drift" and "float", going wherever "the music takes me" on this particular journey! Never tireing, or repetative, like classical music, always the same, but also ever deepening. Click on some of the samples on here and give it a try...too bad they are so short, as you need to "live" in the selections on the album. Do trust me, and pick up this great classic album...I guarantee you will NEVER be sorry that you did, and hopefully, you'll thank me for convincing you to try this super talented musician's album! Enjoy! ~operabruin

Customer Reviews:
a blend of New age and traditional aboriginal music.......2005-07-08
I first bought this CD over 8 years ago and it remains one of my favorites.
The first track alone is worth buying the album for. Track 7 is also noteworthy. It contains a didgeridoo being played in a manner that imitates various things. (a common practice among didgeridoo playing) The imitations are a boomerang, blow fly, crickets, bullfrogs, a cave, crow, pigeon, kookaburras, an emu, raven, dingo, kangaroo, dog, and lizard.
The CD is out of print but is really worth listening to.
Didge Lovers- Listen Up!.......2002-08-09
If you like Didge and some traditional aboriginal sounding atmospheres, you will love this cd. Nice catchy rhythms and beats. The excellent and warm didge reminds me of Inlakesh. There are some (what I would describe as "African")voices singing behind the first 3 songs or so- I loved it. Very tribal and beautiful sounding- nice rhythmed songs. The solo didge is totally excellent on this cd also. I'll have to practice some of this on my own didge.. One of my favorites amongst my collection now. Get it.
Ok, I'll buy two..........2001-04-20
I haven't quit playing this cd since it arrived two weeks ago. Adam Plack has to be the most creative sound magicians I've ever heard. The percussion, didge and keyboards are so interwoven through some of the pieces that I don't even have time to sit there and tear it apart. "Initiation" can play all day, as far as I'm concerned. But wait - I want to hear "Underground, In the Air, On the Ground" just one more time...
Now I have to get one for my brother. He's going to go over the moon when he listens to this.
Do NOT buy this album!.......2000-03-14
I want to be the only one who has it or even KNOWS about it. People will think I am a god.
Brings out spirits and cast down demons!.......1998-10-28
I used to blast this over a 100 watt stereo in a warehouse with 15 inch woofers. The incredible chants and "primative" music would form standing waves in places as I walked around designing my electrical laser supplies late at night.
Some songs would dislodge huge sections of acoustic energy and create wind like effects. I often felt like beings were next to me or touching me. This is not like any music you have ever heard, yet it fascinates everyone who is exposed to it.
After playing Winds of Warning for several weeks I began to feel like some of my personal demons were being exorcised. They were. I quit that laser company and now have my own computer graphics studio where, yes, we still play this amazing album.
In fact, I'm here writing this for Amazon because an Intern liked the album so much she wanted to buy a copy.

Customer Reviews:
Art made sound.......2005-11-09
The most beauty-oriented album from awesome swiss harpist, multi-instrumental magician Andreas Vollenweider was made in 1984. The impeccable sounds and ambiences of this record transport you directly to a clean, healing atmosphere of wonder with a lot of world music references and a light-hearted feeling that spreads throughout the album. Sometimes optimistic, sometimes dramatic, but always really touching, the varied sounds and colours of this record are a complete help for the balance of the mind. The electro-acoustic harp always sounds clever, accurate and inspired and gives a personal touch to the maremagnum of different sounds that floats all over.
Specially touching are the rhythmic and cheerful `The Glass Hall', the romantic and delicate `Phases of Three Moons' and the light-hearted, happy `Flight Feet & Root Hands', in which you almost can picture the musicians performing together with a smile on their face, for the nice and spontaneous feeling that flows throughout the song.
Every song in this album is danceable, probably because Andreas Vollenweider's albums are very art-oriented, which means there's a lot of references about dancing, painting, performing all over his music. His music, thematic and titles are full of images and atmospheres.
This album is the closing of a trilogy which comprehends it and his two first albums. In fact, the last title of it is a musical and nominal reference to the three of these albums with melodies from both three. The other great part of this trilogy is `Caverna Magica'. That one, along with `White Winds', the masterpiece `Down to the Moon' and `Dancing With the Lion' are the most recommended for beginners.
Seminal, singular and breathtakingly magical!.......2002-11-30
For me, this release and the other early work of Andreas Vollenweider defined New Age music. Artful, complex, imaginative and ever-changing, "White Winds" is the third (and my personal favorite) in a trio of complimentary recordings that bring to life the magic and mystery of our world through the eyes of an artist of rare depth and clarity. The first and third parts of the Trilogy are "...Behind the Gardens--Behind the Wall--Under the Tree..." and "White Winds". All feature Vollenweider's signature sound of dreamy, jazzy electroacoustic pedal harp and cheng accompanied by voice, synthesizer, a wide range of gentle percussion, and occasional contributions from other instruments. This is true music at its finest--playful, intricate compositions that are soulfully performed and ingeniously constructed, flowing one into another through an ever evolving succession of moods. Vollenweider has this to say about his art: "The making of music, dancing, painting--creativity--all of this has so much to do with the ongoing process of `finding oneself', or better, of searching for the things that give us such an individual, complex, and miraculous depth of emotions...ideas...dreams..." He calls his endeavors "wonderful adventures" and "seeker's journeys", and relishes "making this music and bringing it to its listening friends." And indeed, Vollenweider and his fellow musicians have found riches within and many friends without. In an era where the dumbing down of the New Age genre has resulted in a plethora of mindless dronings of ambient whitenoise, this album stands as a reminder of what meditative electroacoustic music can truly be. If you like this release, try its two companion works as well, either separately, or as packaged together in the two CD set "The Trilogy". To follow Vollenweider's continuing evolution as an artist, try the next albums he recorded: "Down from the Moon" and "Dancing with the Lion".
Still the best of "New Age" style?.......2002-10-26
I bought this when it first came out in 1985. I liked it. A lot. Somehow six or seven years later, I let my copy go. Last week I acquired another at a bargain price. I never forgot that I enjoyed this, but I had forgotten just how good it really is. Vollenweider is really something else. Lots of uptempo stuff here with a jazzy feel, abeit without the musical instruments one associates with jazz. There is a little chant, a classical sensibility, a smidgen of exotica/lounge attitude...the whole effort just works well, and gives much pleasure. I did not go on to become a huge Andreas fan...in fact, I don't think I ever purchased another release. That shouldn't be held against him...I have always had limited music budgets, and buy much more in the remainder and sale bins and at garage sales than from the full-price shelves. I also like jazz and folk better than "New Age" and spend more dough in those categories. But this one is a keeper. If you are new to the style, and haven't heard Andreas, start with "White Winds." You won't be disappointed.
White Winds.......2002-03-03
Vollenwieder - I worship the guy. His music is a source of peace, comfort, creativity and inspiration. For those unfamiliar, he plays a suped-up harp which takes center stage to the fullness of an instrumental backdrop. Underlying concepts, stories and sojourns add to the delightful experience of each of his works.
White Winds is one of several albums no home should be without!
(White Winds, Down to the Moon, Book of Roses, Behind the Garden would be a very nice starters collection!)
Like a good wine, it gets better with time!.......2002-02-08
Having heard this for the first time in 1985ish, I had forgotten how wonderful Andreas Vollenweider's music sounds. Being recently reacquainted with him and his music, I have now repurchased all but the first CD and it's coming soon.
When I say it has been a pleasure to refamiliarize myself with the man and his music, it is an understatement. For the test of music that has left an indelible impression upon your being, is when you still know the notes after having not heard them for almost 17 years; yet can hum along and not miss a beat. Now that/this is great music.

Seems like only yesterday the Kronos Quartet stepped up their career as musical mavericks with a coveted, wide-open contract with Nonesuch Records. Now it's Nonesuch's turn to give Kronos the big-package nod, gathering key works recorded by the group--from younger composers and time-tested veterans alike--into this 10-CD box set. As one might expect, the set is stuffed with contrasts, from the first CD, with its 11-part, upstepping John Adams suite and then the far more solemn Missa Syllabica from Arvo Pärt. Nearly 20 of these pieces here were composed expressly for Kronos, pitched and sculpted for their easily-racked mixture of straightforward string quartet roles and intelligently restructured approaches to the even the simplest gestures. Perhaps most key here is George Crumb's Black Angels, in large part due to Crumb's role in inspiring David Harrington to form Kronos 25 years ago. Crumb's music spirals and chases through the air, engaging high pitches and fast pacings as if they were ends in themselves. Gone from this set are most of the short snippets that have filled some of Kronos's other fine single CD recordings. In abundance instead are some of the legendary works: Morton Feldman's long, endlessly patient Piano and String Quartet (with Aki Takahashi), Steve Reich's unnerving Different Trains, and Henryk Górecki's String Quartets Nos. 1 and 2. There are also some of the astounding Eastern European works from Night Prayers as well, including the stunning Quartet No. 4 from Sofia Gubaidulina. And of course there are the Kronos biggie pieces: Philip Glass's works fill one CD, and so do Terry Riley's. What's more, Riley's Cadenza on the Night Plain and "G Song" are presented here in entirely fresh, new recordings. What the listener gets is a huge block of music, full of shifting colors and textures but perfectly apt in giving a wide-angle vantage on what Kronos has done for contemporary music. --Andrew Bartlett
Customer Reviews:
A worthwhile investment.......2003-10-06
It would be an understatement to say that this is a fabulous box set. All 10 CDs are packed with some fabulous music that beautifull highlights the first 25 years of the Kronos Quartet, and the booklet included provides a great history of the group as well as nice blurbs on the composers and their pieces.
Equally nice about the box set is the inclusion of multiple new recordings, thus making this a worthwhile investment for fans. The Peter Sculthorpe Quartets are a particularly nice addition, as are the added Piazzolla, Part, and Riley compositions.
Along with this, the "classic" Kronos recordings are all here: "Black Angels" "Different Trains" "Salome Dances for Peace" (well, exceprts), and Feldman's Piano and String Quartet. Of particular note, I think is the inclusion of Gubaidulina's Quartet No 4, a fabulous recording that is otherwise hidden in Kronos' recording "Night Prayers."
Yes, this is quite an investment, but I firmly believe that it's worth it - longtime fans and newcomers alike have a lot to gain from this collection.
Excelent compilation!.......2001-09-09
I like more classic period, like Hayden, but Cronos does it very well, technicaly excelent. The ten sets are wonderful recordings and the selection is unique. It deserves the investment, If you buy it, youre going to have more than ten hours of joy.
Amazingly Now Retrospective.......2001-06-26
Since their youthful start in the NW back in the 70's, Kronos has collaborated with, commissioned, or just played such a breadth of musicians it almost seems that breadth - and especially non western world culture - is their mission. But, while this conservatively and esthetically designed 25-yr-retrospective box (with its increasingly sophisticated photo-portraits) belies the pulsation of social angst and conscience that underlies the bulk of the inclusions, the latter concern, its vitality and relevance - and not some stylish chasing after cultural breadth - is what overtakes the listener/reader, rather soon. I say reader, since the booklet is very helpful, especially to the relative novice, and well balanced in its coverage of composers, historical contexts, performers, individual texts, etc.
There are probably more non contemporaries performed by the Quartet over the years than this selection would indicate. That undercuts their ties with the sense of revolution in music throughout the ages, but it leaves more time for the present: and that is where one expects the group wishes to be, is most contributory and challenged, and is best and most fairly judged. Highly recommended, both for those who know Kronos's work well and wish a handsome tribute on their shelf, and for those who do not but are open and ready to be affected, whether impacted esthetically, reminded socio-morally, or whatever combination of both befits.
How Could You Not Listen?.......1998-12-19
My opinion pales when compared to this CD. Indeed the group's ingeniousness, its knowing and its balls are in full display here, hopefully to put to rest any lingering contention that there is little more to Kronos than form. To any person who accepts the merits of 20th-century music, this CD presents the genius of our culture and teaches that daring and ingenuity do not have to be sacrificed on the road to technical brilliance. My only regret is that the CD does not include Kronos's interpretation of Bartok. But, so what? Górecki's here, as are Part and Benshoof. Listen to this CD -- soar and struggle with it.
Good for help to know up-to-date contemporaly music.......1998-11-28
The Kronos Quartet has released many albums. There let us see what the quartet has tried new titles and arrenges in each period. But this is the best set for understand the quartet as summary of thier works. The CDs are distributed by each composers and we can see thier identities easily.Unfortunately this dose not include all but be enough to see what the quartet has been.I hope that every classical music fans(not only contemporaly music fans) listen this CDs.

High Winds White Sky.......2007-06-05
"One Day I Walk" was the first BC song I ever heard.
The Tom Rush verison it was though. I HAD to find out
about the writer of the song - incredible!
Back in the mid-1970's, it wasn't easy finding alot of
BC music until "DANCING IN THE DRAGON'S JAWS". I worte
to stores in Canada and had friends looking in Japan for
ANYTHING they could find from him. Slowly, the USA discovered
and stocked BC records and tapes. This album was one of the first
3 or 4 I found. Touching, mellow, heartfelt, great playing, great
words, in the best of the singer/song writer tradition!
Bruce showed us all here that there was alot more to come from him!
If you like early BC, this is his first - a great one to get.
Nothing Bad.......2005-01-20
This is Bruce's best recording. The extra tracks are okay but not anything to get overly excited about. Slight diffference in mix so that makes the extra money worth while.
His Second Album.......2004-12-16
(35.5 minutes)
Now if you ask me, and many a Canadian music aficionado takes the time to do so on a surprisingly regular basis, this sophomore effort by Bruce Cockburn always makes me think of Ward's Island when I see the cover. I guess that's mainly because that's where the photo was taken and bridge featured on the cover still stands there on that little island just outside downtown Toronto. Me and Mama went there to a party one Friday night while we were visiting kinfolk up in Canada (her side, not mine!) and the party happened to be in a house right around from that there bridge and when I seed it I hollered, "stop the car Mama!" (because she was driving and because I call my wife 'Mama'), "I reckon that there is the bridge from that High Winds White Sky album cover!" ..and sure enough it was and we stopped and had us a photo standing there next to it. I asked a kind Canadian feller who was passing by to take the photo while we stood there and smiled for the picture. That picture now hangs on the wall in the back room, right next to my gimme hat collection.
This was the second album of what turned out to be a sort of Cockburn Trilogy, comprised of his first three albums. They are like a trilogy because they all kind of fit together with the same sort of music and the same folkie spiritualism. At this stage he was clearly interested in spiritual things, but not yet professing Christianity. Now don't get me wrong, the music definitely progresses as time goes by and you can hear him growing musically and as a song writer with each album, but if you compare these here three with his other work, then these three are like peas in a pod. Now before you commence to thinking I am suggesting that this album is pretty much like the other two and therefore not worth spending money on, you're wrong. This one was my favorite Bruce Cockburn album of all time until another one came along and knocked it down in my personal rankings (and I'll tell you about that one in a another review).
One Day I Walk is a tune catchy enough that it has been recorded by many others, most recently by k d lang on her Hymns of the 49th Parallel. That particular song is kind of like a Neil Young song from that era in that after a few years it stops sounding dated and starts sounding timeless... kind of like a hymn. The re-issue contains two tunes not originally on the vinyl; Totem Pole and It's An Elephants World. Now, I never look a gift horse in the mouth, at least not in an obvious fashion, but these two songs are not nearly as comfortably placed on the re-issue CD as the extra tunes placed on some of the other re-issues in the Cockburn catalogue. This is mainly for two reasons; first, the original album was pretty much a complete unit with songs planned to fit nicely together from beginning to end and the new songs feel like they were just tacked on to the end of the album as a special bonus for collectors, second, the two additional songs were recorded on a cassette player with one microphone and they sound like it. I happen to enjoy having the two additional tunes to listen to because when me and Junior have our annual Cockburn A to Z weekend in which we program the CD player to go through every single Cockburn tune in alphabetical order we have two additional ditties to include in the list. However, some folk might be a little disappointed in the two songs because they aren't up to the standard of everything else on the album when one considers aural quality and musical ambiance. I reckon I'll let you decide what you think and make a purchase according to your own wishes. The price of the version with the extra songs as compared to that without ain't much different, so you might could make your decision on strictly aesthetic grounds.
Great!.......2004-06-14
This is a great CD. The early Bruce was fascinating. I recommend to all Cockburn fans to take a listen to this disc.
The melodies are captivating and nothing less than wonderful. ALmost every song has something to say...and is powerful. Incredible piano during Serpent Blues.
An Early Zen Sense.......2003-11-21
informs this CD from the very beginnging of Cockburn's recording career. The music is acoustically driven, and the lyrics more charged by observations of life in Toronto/Ottawa than on a larger world stage. His attentions tend to look and consider the interior spiritual plain as well. As the cover illustrates, this is a winter type of album, to be listened to fireside.
Musically the guitar work is just so sublime and amazing! The songs are essentially just Bruce, with occasional accompaniement, such as the complex and yet deeply spiritual pace of "Ting/The Cauldron." It was this early display of his absolutely spiritual commitment to his craft that let anyone who was on to Bruce early know that they were being taken into the confidence of a man with something very deep to convey about Music itself. And the songs include some truly masterful efforts: "One Day I Walk," "Love Song,", "You Point To the Sky."
A word about the remastering: it is as sparkling as it can be. Of course, that was the case with the original vinyl and the ESD CD from the 80's. Goes to show what care True North and Bernie Finkelstein put into ensuring and endorsing the quality inherent in Bruce's work. The fact that this was first released in 1971 gives you a sense of the commitment that both artist and management have made to the music.
Refreshing, eh?

Customer Reviews:
My other original music cd is "Songs For A Dreamer".......2003-08-13
Hi folks and thank you very much for your kind comments regarding, "Winds Across The Water".
My follow up cd is, "Songs For A Dreamer", which is available here at Amazon.com.
If you enjoy this release, I think you'll also like my, "Songs For A Dreamer", release as well. It's an updated take and a further evolution, exploring and developing the sounds and ideas I used for, "Winds Across The Water". Another step in the journey...
Here in Hawaii, "Songs For A Dreamer", has been the featured in-house music of the IMAX Theater, Waikiki and has won numerous top ten radio awards, both nationally and internationally.
btw, I'm currently working on a new cd. It's the first one done at my new home studio.
Having your own recording studio means having unlimited studio time! As a result, the guitar performances I'm getting are, I think, the best I've ever put on tape, (or in this case, to disk)!
I hope to have it out sometime in '04 and of course, it will be available here at Amazon.com.
Aloha, Peace and Dream On!

GREAT for massage! never get tired of it........1999-08-03
This is a great cd! I am a massage therapist and I am always looking for new music. I have been listening to this for a year and never get tired of it!
Very beautiful music great for unwinding........1998-09-27
This CD is a beautiful blend of a variety of guitars, flutes, and other instruments. I'm trying to find more of their music!
More Please...........1998-04-21
If I've got this right, White is one guy and Eisenstein is the other. Whatever...on this CD (which is the only one I've been able to find), they use a variety of wind and native island instruments. This album is not "New Age" junk--it's just very soothing and well thought out real music. Good for romance or unwinding. I want more from them.

This Makes You Want MORE MOZART!.......2006-08-13
This is excellent for
a) people whom haven't really heard much Mozart and
b) those whom are "easing back into" his music.
I fit into the latter category. I recently watched Amadeus for the first time and was STAGGERED by the movie...as fictional as it may well be.
I just HAD to have more than my modest collection of his piano works, and this 2-disc set is PERFECT!
Also, I was never too much into Opera, and THIS collection helped cure me of that as well! Just enough highlights to intrigue...
