Extremely Inspirational Music.......2006-04-24

I bought this CD while I was stationed in Hawaii in 1991. Being a Nikon professional, I was captured by the CD Cover. However, the biggest suprise was the quality of the music. as usual the rothchildern have produced a masterpiece, I have not heard a song I did not love. this album is a true joy to behold. do yourself a favor and embark on a musical journey, into the souls, of two of the finest musical minds of our time. few people play music with more heart and love.

World Music with Local Flavor.......2005-07-07

I was fortunate to catch the CD release party for this album in Santa Fe, NM. The band has a ton of instruments and 2 tons of talent. They are students of world music with amazing energy and respect for the cultures, songs and rhythms from around the globe.

This album focuses that talent, knowledge and respect, and combines it with personal experiences and loves to create a truly unique listen. Highly recommended.

Round Mountain turned me onto folk........2005-07-06

I have made exactly two purchases of folk music in the last five years. Both of them were of this debut album by Round Mountain. I think I need to buy a third copy now because I keep giving mine away to friends that I am certain will love this eclectic, crisp, honest and emotional collection of songs.

Songs like "Unknowing" and "You Cannot Wait" are likely to leave you breathless, unable to continue typing or sweeping or cleaning or whatever it was you were doing before you put on this album. The intimacy and sweetness in these songs leaves your heart wide open. And suddenly some bagpipes or a hurdy gurdy or 30-stringed African coke bottle melodaphone will drop in and you are laughing out loud. (I'm not sure about the Afro-melodaphone, but the liner notes do say that this pair of brothers play no less than 25 different instruments on the album.)

And when "Raised Eyes" comes on, I *dare* you not to jump up from your seat and start dancing your own sort of pan-ethnic Celtic-Middle-East-Tennessee jig. It's impressive that these songs combine influences from so many different cultures, but what is even more special is how the music blends from one mood into the next. This album moves through moments of transcendence to choruses of irreverent, free-flowing fun with an unforced ease that can only come from a true life-long love and mastery of music.

I saw Joe Craven play at DjangoFest San Francisco in 2004. A truly wonderful musician who seems to be a master of any instrument he touches. On this CD he takes tunes written or made famous by Django, and interprets each in a different latin style. His choice for musicians is absolutely beyond reproach and they breath a whole new life into gypsy jazz standards. I think you'll enjoy this as a gypsy, jazz, or even a bluegrass fan.

Amidst the sudden blizzard of Django Reinhardt copy bands, Joe Craven's cd, Django Latino, is a fresh and sunny day.

With guitar heard on only 3 tracks and never aiming to sound like Django, Craven gives a new twist, sweet, vivid and deep, to 16 compositions by the great Gypsy guitarist. The recording gives all the tribute with none of the imitation.

Joe, shining bright on violin, mandolin and percussion, brings along several of his compadres from the David Grisman band and a choice selection of lively friends and fine players. I'm biased because this is my album. It has it's flaws but it's still pretty good. Don't take my word for it, though,

"You know the stuff you rub out of your eyes when you wake up? It's the stuff of sleep and dreams, and that's what Slowpoke is made of. Lucas Van Lenten, who has played in several groups, most notably in Duchess with his wife and sister, has apparently been sneaking this stuff in small doses, because this is his first solo outing.

Recorded in studios and bedrooms in Austin and Brooklyn, it's a superb collection of half-remembered landscapes, lazy hopes and lingering pop melodies. Van Lenten sets the game plan with opener "S.O.S.": high, wavering vocals, pulsing bass and gently crackling guitars. His vocal stylings cop from both Phoenix and Quasi, taking the former's phrasing and the latter's desperation. The song starts out slow, but kickstarts about halfway in, moving from a stroll to a stride. Like much of the album, it doesn't seem concerned about the destination so much as the getting there. "Picture Show" drifts into your ear like a secret, then lodges in whatever part of your brain is responsible for earworms. Quietly bleeping synths, gently strummed acoustic guitar and Van Lenten's sweet croon turn into something moving and ineffable when they merge. There's only one disappointment: the song ends far too soon.

Of course, this wouldn't be a bedroom album if there weren't a few sonic experiments. "Missing" ably covers that base with misplaced tones and disturbing moodiness; there's a sense that you're descending into previously unknown depths. Elsewhere, "The Acid Gang", "Loot" and "Mutiny On The Bountiful" sound like The Soft Bulletin as remixed by The Books. Of course, like most analogies, it breaks down if you listen too closely, but on these three songs the open-layered feel that has become The Books' calling card mixes easily with the quavering vocals and hopeful attitude commonly associated with the Flaming Lips' recent classic.

This is a damn beautiful album. Material that should be hazy, sleepy and ephemeral has been made tangible, livable, repeatable through Van Lenten's work. If you've ever wanted to relive the moment when you've just woken up and everything, however briefly, makes sense, Slowpoke is here to help".

"Brooklyn-based (by way of Austin, Texas) Lucas Van Lenten does a nice quiet bleepy thing mixing acoustic guitars and atmosperic electronics. Check out his cut "Picture Show" from his 2004 release Slowpoke over at his MySpace teepee. There's also a pretty nice dub number called "Ghost Ship Dub" that will wrap steely slide guitars around the inside of your skull... worth spending some time with."

"Brooklyn's Lucas Van Lenten is recording music that's a compelling mix of bedroom pop and clicking spacey electronics. While there's quite a lot of people swimming these days in the same tank as the Flaming Lips or Grandaddy, I like the dryness Van Lenten brings to his songs - things never get too drenched in sound. The songs are given space to quietly breathe, even as the psych clouds rise. There are a few songs available at the Flash-filled website for his label, and a few more at Van Lenten's MySpace page. It's at the latter that you can download the highlight: "Blacktop" is light-footed and starry eyed, caught somewhere between the Beta Band and The Notwist, pretty and shy".
