...to a great movie. It's not as good as his soundtrack to "Afterglow" but a nice listen nonetheless. Without the great band members like Gary Burton & Charles Lloyd what can one expect?

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite film scores from Mark Isham.......2007-02-25

Mark Isham is quickly becoming one of my favorite composers. His work on the indie film "The Cooler" introduced me to his talents and I enjoyed what I heard. It wasn't until "Crash" did I really start taking notice of his work. Mark's work on "Crash" is a mix of ambient and classical with a glimmer of Middle Eastern (like on the song "Flames"). A lot of film composers have a terrible habit of creating loud, bombastic music that simply overwhelms the film and the person watching the film. Mark avoids the bombastic trappings of Hans Zimmer and John Williams by creating a more lush, haunting, minimal score that will leave a profound, moving effect on the filmgoer. One of the best songs on the album is "Flames" a gorgeous Middle Eastern-influenced track with ethereal female vocals that reminded me of Azam Ali and Lisa Gerrard of Dead Can Dance. My other favorite song on the cd is "In the Deep" by Bird York. The song is a lovely folk/pop/jazz song that captures the emotional turmoil that occurs through out the film. I wasn't too wild about The Stereophonics track. It kinda killed the intimate sound Mark Isham created. At least Bird York's song had that same lush, intimate, atmospheric sound. While "Crash" wasn't perfect by all means, the music itself is perfect in every sense of the word at least to me it is. Too bad I can't say the same for his recent work for "The Black Dahlia".

Although the album is a perfect piece of art and the music has a total efect on the whole movie, tha box that came the cd was broken inside.. the teeth that holds the cd were not there and the cd was loose ready to fall when i opened the box..
Thats very unfortunate but still hasn't happened in the past, I'm amazon oriented customer, have ordered lots of stuff from amazon never had problems in the past! My best regards, Alex

Every now and again a movie comes along that impacts you so personally and deeply, you cannot ignore, or ever forget what it meant to you. This is one of those movies.
Crash will take you down to your very soul then drag you back kicking and screaming to reality and wanting to run away and hide.
Dealing with society's inability to overcome prejudice on a very personal level, Crash exhibits the ability to make you examine not only yourself, but everyone around you. You ARE racist. Every thought you have tells you that, good or bad.
There is no one actor that stands out above the rest in this movie, all are treated by the director as being of the same importance, but the viewer WILL identify with at least one of them. All put in performances well above that expected. From Sandra Bullocks affluent life down to Matt Dillons survival in a dingy apartment, through Don Cheadles family dynamic to Jennifer Espisito's implicit Racism, you will see what ordinary America is really like. How we all interact with each other on a day-to-day basis, how the decisions we make effact not only ourselves, but others around us.
It would be impossible to give the plot in less than 5,000 words, but this film has gained 3 Oscars, 36 other awards and has 56 nominations, and it was worth more.
THE film of 2005, will be in the top 250 for all time movies.

This is the sort of rare CD that you can turn on, set "repeat CD" and not touch it for the day; or even for days! I have had this CD for many, many years... and it has never lost its appeal. PS: This is NOT "upbeat" jazzy ambient; but, mellow "calm you down" ambient. Each track is unique.

This is a marvelously moving album to experience. While all the artists are different the album flows together very nicely. It moves along at its own pace, far far different than the pace of much of the everyday world in which we live. It is mellow and is not something you actively listen to although over time the melodies become quite clear and, oddly enough, captivating even exciting, though on a different level.

Play it in the background or play it in the car and suddenly an entirely different ambience is created. It's a beautiful work. I never tire of it and it embraces whatever mood I'm in and allows it to unfold in a rhythm all its own. You won't regret it a bit.

As a Yoga instructor and artist I am constantly seaching for that special flow- that music that you consciously hear as you begin yoga or meditation, but has the ability to disappear into the recesses of your mind as your awareness attunes to a different level. Path invokes relaxation. It is fast enough to use in anything involving movement, yet not so fast you feel hurried in any way. I am not sure that it would be slow enough for pure meditation. Every musical creation on this CD is different, yet it flows seemlessly. I also bought YogaZone, Music for Yoga- it was good-a few shared artists- but nothing compared to Path. If you are looking for a complement to your yoga, or want some music to create a relaxed atomosphere this is it!

absolutely loved the score of the movie and so had to get the soundtrack. everytime I listen to it, I remember exactly which scene it was played in. the score also has a nice calming effect whenever I'm stressed which is great.

I am 16 years old, and I just watched Life as a House. Ihaven't stopped watching since then! it is a great movie and the movie is made by the awesome pop/rock songs! Its too bad that soundtrack doesn't have em. You can't go wrong with Limp Bizkit, Marilyn Manson, Guster, and Default.

I saw the movie and it's one of my favourite ever, great story, great actors. But that's another story. When I read the previous reviews I was so sad none of the pop/rock songs of the movie were included in the Soundtrack. I then recorded these songs on my own and made an altrenative "Soundtrack". Both Sides Now, Rainy Day and the others: superb.
Anyway I took a chance to buy the Score CD through Amazon. Well, it is super as well. First of all, unlike the most of the movies' scores, the main title is not being repeated in all the tracks. There's a variety of melodies in this cd. Melodic, passional, funny, thoughtful, dramatic. The Orchestra support is magic as well, it gives the tracks a warm arrangement. I found it very good. Mark Isham really did a superb job. If you like relaxing music that's a great opportunity.

Mark Isham can do little wrong; the score for Life as a House is another winner, though I wonder if he can ever top the haunting music from Mrs. Soffel (from the Film Music CD). So many have asked about the song Both Sides Now. The version in the film is indeed Joni Mitchell. It can be found on the 2004 CD Dreamland and the 2000 CD Both Sides Now.

The emotions running through me right now are taking over my body. This movie. This picture of this family is so real. I loved Kline in this movie, he made this character come alive and you wanted more, you wanted him to live. This is up there with my all-time favorites. I'll never forget this film. It made me cry. It made me laugh and see the goodness of what people can be, what people are. And I loved the music, the bands. But most of all, I loved the score. It made me cry with every scene. There are just no words strong enough to say how much I loved this movie....

I basically love the movie, because it's poetic along with Montana wilderness and I am a fly-fisherman. I have just bought this CD as my background music while I am tying flies. And it works very very well. Each track reminds me of each moment of the movie, especially, tracks from Track 25 "Yes, Quite a Day" to Track 31 "Hauted by Waters" just make me poignant. An exclusive interview with the composer is also very unique and worth to hear about the background of the movie. "The Moment That Could Not Last" last only 1:24, how about in our real life? Is it gonna be like Paul's? I am hautend by this soundtrack.

Personally, this is one of the absolute BEST soundtracks I have ever listened to. The music is calming, soothing, and truly wonderful. The music is so well put together and nicely coordinated and I feel like I am watching the movie again...it also makes great to read the Laura Ingalls Wilder books too. Try it...you might be suprised how well it fits. :)

Mark Isham's score for the motion picture A River Runs Through It is one of the most memorable and emotionally captivating film scores of all time. The arrangements of strings, piano, woodwinds create a meditative and reflective range of music throughout the film capturing all the emotions of this powerful drama about an American family in rural Montana. It is at once deeply haunting, moving, nostalgic and sentimental and captures the innocence and beauty of nature and childhood, as well as darker themes of rebellion and tragedy. There is a profound sense of emotion that is embedded within the music that sweeps over me every time I hear it. A combination of happiness, sadness, excitement, and reflection. There is something simply sweeping and majestic within his music. I couldn't think of anything else that would better compliment the film. Highly recommended.

I am no expert on music; however, I believe that this soundtrack was a good one. I can listen to all 7 songs, I agree with the rest of you that there should be an 8th in the form of Aerosmith's "Dream On." I absolutely love this movie and the music to it. If you love the movie then you need to have this soundtrack.

I was all set to get the CD until I heard it and found out there was no "Dream On." What???!!! How could they? The best song in the movie, the one they used for the trailers and TV spots and in the credits, and they don't have it? That was the only reason I wanted the CD. Even though I like "Don't Fear the Reaper" by the BLue Oyster Cult. But I don't understand how they could not add "Dream On".

Even so, I still love the movie. Thank God I have the DVD to listen to "Dream On" in the credits all I want.

3 out of 5 stars Spectacular movie, but the soundtrack is somewhat bland..........2005-08-02

I was disappointed that this CD did not include the theme music played when the US tied Sweden (two staccato eigth notes, quarter rest, two staccato eighth notes, quarter rest, etc.).

Nevertheless...

Three notes. Over and over. And over. Mark Isham has made a good attempt at composing varations on a theme which consists of just three notes. During the earlier parts of the movie it works, as we are being introduced to the characters and the journey they're following. Isham was fantastic with the music he wrote for that ten minutes of tension and bedlam that occurred while the US was hanging on to their 4-3 lead.

But when time finally ran out and the game officially won, we hear those same. Three. Notes. And it lacked meat. It sounded like a small chamber orchestra. It was very disappointing. By the time the movie is over, we feel like those three notes have been beaten into our skull with a broken hockey stick. A worthy effort, but an unsuccessful one.

Also disappointing was the fact that the "Miracle" track on this CD was "summarized." All we hear is the music for the goal scored by Buzz Schneider, then a Soviet goal, then the buildup of the final 10 minutes, then the ending. Again, where was Mark Johnson's tying goal (the same theme as when the US tied Sweden)?

Still, it's a must-own for anyone who is insanely addicted to the movie like I am. It's just too bad they weren't able to get John Williams for the score.

A great movie, with great music, and great script. Casting was superb.

I watch this with my 8 year old grandson who is empowered by its magic and miracle.

I just jumped on net to order soundtrack and found that Dream On is missing. What a tradegy to cheat the public of such a song that was the eternal identifier and the guts of the movie.

Somebody screwed up. Where are they working now?

Mark Isham's enduring 1983 solo debut captures his graduation from gifted trumpeter with groups like Rubisa Patrol, Group 87, and, most visibly, Van Morrison, to composer with a more versatile and ambitious body of work. This cd was the my first exposure to Mark Isham's music. How lucky we are to have such a talented man to write in a way that takes us away, to a special dream state. That's what this music does, and you can't sit still while you listen to it, even dancing in your car. Pure pleasure!

"On the Thresh hold of liberty" is a very dramatic song that has been commonly used in movies and tv. The rest of the cd is a snooze fest!

Mark Isham's 1983 Windham Hill debut has a reputation as a "new age" classic, but it transcends that oft-misused label. There is a wide variety of stylings and moods in this, from the comical "Mr. Moto's Penguin", to the sublimely minimalist "Sympathy and Acknowledgement", from the jazzy "Many Chinas" to the heroically inspiring "On the Threshold of Liberty". (The last was used a theme for the now nearly-forgotten Al Pacino film "Revolution"). The influences, from Steve Reich to Miles Davis, are readily apprarent, but Isham's creativity as a composer takes the music way beyond mere imitation - it still holds amazingly well over 20 years later. Isham has found a niche in Hollywood as a prolific film-score composer (and I for one believe his score for "Crash" should have been nominated for an Oscar - it was beautiful and very integral to the film). But this is a great way to introduce yourself to his earlier work, and it's one of the finest albums ever to be saddled with the "new age" tag. I highly recommend it to anyone with eclectic instrumental music tastes. If you like what you hear, then you also might like his other releases, especially "Tibet", "Castalia", and the aforementioned "Crash" soundtrack.

After 20 years this CD still stands up. Still a good listen. Still a good example of all it wanted to be, the integration of synths and accoustic in a kind of music that gets the best of both. If its weaknesses have become more apparent with time, so have its strengths. And Mark has moved on to other things (why should he do more of the same thing?). But Vapor Drawings is still there for us to enjoy. It has outlived the stigma of New Age. (And now you can get it cheap. So if you've been holding out all these years, now's the time.)

5 out of 5 stars Putstanding debut by a a Talent deserving Wider Recognition.......2002-11-15

Although this is on Windham Hill, I would have to say this is not a New Age recording, even in 1983 during the height of the New Age explosion. This is more ambient music than anything else. Mark is an inventive, composer arranger and instrumetalist. He goes from fusion to ambient and many other styles in between. He has the science of implication down. He creates soundscapes that stimulate the imagination, conjuring multiple images. This is more about the composer than the instrumentalist. Mark plays trumpet, keyboards and electronic percussion here to great effect. At the time, I felt this was the single strongest release that Windham Hill had. This was so far beyond anything they had released. Mark has gone on to distinguish himself in subsequent recordings as an outstanding trumpet player/reed accompanist/film composer/conceptualist. It's all evident here. The promise is here in this recording, so are many of the manifestations.

I own over 50 soundtracks and this one is without question the best. Track number 5 is my favorite. Mostly orchestral arragment with violin solos, absolutely beautiful. Hard to find, but worth the price.

Ever since 6th grade Ive seent this movie at least once a year, and I cry every time, its a beautiful story, and the soundtrack is just as bewitching, if not more. Coalwood, is my favorite song, and after each time I watch October sky, its in my head for weeks. This CD is well worth the money, trust me.

Mark Isham has outdone himself with this ingenious soundtrack. I owned this cd not too long after the movie was released on dvd. Unfortunately it was stolen out of my car along with other cds. Now you can't touch it for less than $45. The score truly depicts the era and location of the story. Having lived in West Virginia I can see the coal mines and the haunting mist that covers the mountains when I hear the opening score. If the cd becomes available to you, grab it fast! This one is well worth your money.

Mark Isham is a genious. This is a brillant composition with wonderful melodic contrast, inspired dynamic swells, and a wonderful performance by some equally inspired violin and woodwind players (mostly violin here).

This disk, if you can ever get one, is easily worth $45.

I had tried and tried ever since I saw the film (which is also awesome) for months on end to get a copy of the October Sky soundtrack, without, of course, paying $45 for a used copy on here. My parents finally bought it for me for Christmas, but I never really got around to listening to it until 7 months later. Man, I didn't realize how great this CD is! The hauntingly beautiful score (highlights: Coalwood, Sputnik, Auk 13, Miss Riley, October Sky) by Mark Isham is so moving it can put a lump in your throat; while the handful of 40's/50's songs add an element of fun to the soundtrack, even if they do sometimes come in at awkward moments in the album.
All in all, this is an awesome album which is probably in my top 7 favorite soundtracks (and I am some-what of a 13 year old connoisseur of good soundtracks [particularly scores]).
This CD is great for fans of scores, fans of the movie, or some one who just wants a break from their "Apollo 13" soundtrack.

    I've had this album for almost ten years now, and I'm not tired of it. Great soundtrack for a great film. "Romeo Alone" is my favorite, but the album can be played straight through with few interruptions in mood (the dream sequences, etc.).
    I highly recommend this album. It's consistently grown on me for the last ten years.

    Mark Isham has a gift for capturing, even setting, moods. His pieces evoke feelings and moods. Not quite background music but not quite music you actively listen to, his music allows parts of us to arise, giving us pause to reflect, to wander, to dream.

    This is the soundtrack for a great movie but the soundtrack stands on its own. It is exploratory and adventurous. There are several jazz/blues numbers on it but there is also some experimental music that is difficult to categorize. It is at once entrancing yet challening. That may sound a bit technical but the one word that describes the whole thing is 'cool', as in the jazz kind of cool.

    There aren't many like this one to find. That's what makes it so good. If you are looking for some creative and different music, this is a great place to wander.

    Title says it all. No doubt, Romeo is bleeding, will truly haunt you long after the cd is finished. The movie is absolutely fascinating and to this day, I have never heard a more appropriate soundtrack to a film.

    The best score ever written for film noir--which automatically makes it one of the best scores period. It's right there with score for "Alexander Nevsky" as comprising a variety of melodies and songs that express the varying action and emotions of the story. Beuatiful and haunting Miles-like trumpet predominates.

    By the mid-'90s, trumpeter Mark Isham didn't need to make another solo album. After all, his artistic reputation--and financial security--had already been assured by his work as a film and television composer. He had won Oscar, Grammy, and Emmy nominations for his scores, as well as ongoing critical." Somehow, though, it wasn't enough--he "wanted a vehicle where I could realize my own artistic vision." That vehicle is Blue Sun, Isham's first solo album in four years and the first straight-ahead, acoustic jazz album of his career. He recorded it with the jazz quintet he has led in Los Angeles in recent years (pianist David Goldblatt, saxophonist Steve Tavaglione, bassist Doug Lunn and drummer Kurt Wortman) and that's the band he brings to this project, which mirrors his lifelong admiration for Miles Davis. Isham's Blue Sun does have the understated romanticism of "Kind of Blue," especially in the leader's muted-trumpet smears and in pianist David Goldblatt's space-filled broken chords.     Very listenable jazz takes, on all titles. A super-strong suggestion of Miles Davis on much of the work, and sometimes it's hard to tell Isham from Davis, not that you want to. Despite the takeoff on Miles, Isham gets his own licks in, notably with his original compositions. The quality of
    Isham's playing is close to that of Davis and his search for the ultimate tone. For any fan of horn playing, this album is a must.

    I usually do not review profound jazz albums because the quality of analysis of other more qualified reviewers prevents me from adding anything more substantial, so i would just like to share my first impression.

    Im 42 yo and this is the first time I hear an album of Mark Isham, this is music to relax and to think, not the type of relax you expect from new-age or that type of music..this is the music to watch Edward Hopper paintings and ponder on the subtle levity of existence

    Mark Isham's "Blue Sun" is infused with a sensibility that is refined and cool-cool in the jazz idiom. Mr. Isham wrote seven of the songs here, and he plays these modern jazz arrangements with confidence and skill. I suppose that any discussion of a trumpet-led jazz ensemble has to acknowledge Miles Davis, so let it be said that Mr. Isham does not imbue his music with the sneer that marred some of Mr. Davis' later works and that this session echoes his work form the latter part of the 1950s.

    Mr. Isham moves through the jazz landscape deftly, adding some flourishes here and there that are clearly modern, but the overall sound is that of a classic jazz quintet drawing on electric bass, acoustic and electric piano, drums, and tenor sax to coax and compel listeners to keep their ears open. It would be a mistake to relegate this recording to the role of background music, for it should not be considered part of the "lite" or triple-z jazz (as in snoozzze) that infests FM radio and department stores. "Blue Sun" rewards the attention to details that comes from really listening.

    5 out of 5 stars On the Really Short List of FAVORITE Jazz CDs. . . ........2002-10-01

    I hate to make Miles Davis comparisons, and I won't even attempt to critique his technique--I'll let the experts and the brass players do that. I will simply say that, as years have gone by, when I am in the mood for a trumpet CD, I reach for SKETCHES OF SPAIN or BLUE SUN. I don't know what that says for Miles or Isham, but I love both. BLUE SUN is such a wonderful blend of sounds, melodies, and harmonies that I just don't get tired of hearing it. From the opening percussive notes of "Barcelona," right through the subtle keyboard and sax intro to "That Beautiful Sadness," the more restless feel of "Trapeze" and the melancholy "Lazy Afternoon," Isham has me in his grasp. I love the sax harmony and interplay on "Blue Sun," the sorrow of "In More Than Love," and the tip of the hat to both Miles Davis and Robert Frost (I'm a high school English teacher, so I really appreciate the Frost reference) on "And Miles To Go . . . Before He Sleeps." I love just the hint of electric on the closing tune, "Tour de Chance," as well--it closes everything nicely.

    Where he really slays me, though, is on "In a Sentimental Mood," track 8. I don't think anyone, living or dead, could wring any more emotion and "sentiment" out of a melody than Isham does on this piece. Ohhhh. It's almost exhausting to listen to, but somehow I don't feel exhausted when it's done--I feel refreshed and invigorated. He's done all the work--I just need to slow down and listen. . . . Really nice keyboard work underneath and behind the melody--very understated and appropriate. I don't know how a person could listen to Isham on this track and not run out and buy the CD. Even if you hated the rest, which would be virtually impossible, it would be worth the asking price for this 7+ minute experience.

    Bottom Line: Whether or not he's the next coming of Miles or just another chump blowing on a trumpet, Mark Isham has captured something very special on this CD. It isn't on his earlier ones, and I haven't heard it on his more recent ones, although I love those, as well. He is garnering some attention as a film scorer, which is great--his scores are excellent--but he can't capture this . . . essence . . . in a film score. This is a very intimate, personal, understated, and reflective effort from Isham. Everyone deserves to experience this hour. . . .

    Mark Isham's music straddles that no-man's land between Jazz, New Age and filmscores, which is a shame because record companies often don't know which area to put his albums in! This album is all Jazz, not New Age or Jazz-lite.

    It's is an overlooked classic! Great lyrical, meditative music, warm and laid back. There is a warm tone to it, I would call it "Red Sun" or "Orange Sun" I think if I had named it, the name "Blue Sun" sounds a little too cool, unless it's an oblique reference to Miles Davis "Kind of Blue".

    Usually this music sounds improvisational, but occasionally it sounds a little scripted, but that's a minor criticism, the overall effect is pleasant and laid back. He has the tone down perfectly, with the Harmon mute. As is stated below, the sound is often quite reminiscent of Miles Davis pre-1965 period. Listen to "Round Midnight" by Davis, then listen to this!

    I consider this a great find, I find myself returning to listen over and over late at night. Don't miss this one.

    Well recorded. Five stars for recording, 4 1/2 for performance, if it were a better seller, it would deserve 5 stars under my tough grading system!

    Improves with repeated listening. Highly recommended. Buy this album.
