3 out of 5 stars Pleasant Enough.......2007-02-19

A pleasant score. Fine singing, especially the wonderful Liz Callaway. The score, however, doesn't have those one or two numbers that stand out and stop you in your tracks. I haven't seen the show, and perhaps when integrated with the text.....

5 out of 5 stars Pure joy.......2005-03-08

I have bought this CD with Wild party and each of them was amazing. Fist I have heard Wild party and after that I haven't thought that I would enjoy the second one but Brownstone was simply so amazing. I didn't skip songs, because all of them are beautiful sung by actors who's singing voice are pure, strong and wonderful.
As you can see, I'm a true Brian D'arcy James fan but each singer amazed me, really.
Buy this Cd if you want to hear a fantastic musical.

4 out of 5 stars A Different Type of Musical.......2004-03-09

I bought BROWNSTONE at the recommendation of a friend and have mixed feelings. I know this show has quite a history as far as transfer from off-Broadway to Broadway and the controversy surrounding its revamping for its journey to the Great White Way. I think the songs are catchy and clever, I just am sort of turned off by the orchestrations. The instruments sound like they are coming from a computer built in 1990. They sound too fake and I think there could be better orchestration, though the melodies are nice. Some songs are just corny like The Cell Phone Song, added only recently. Certain songs are great like The opening, Fiction Writer, Camouflage, and Babies on the Brain.

I would say that if you are looking for a musical CD to add to your collection that is a little different from what you're used to, BROWNSTONE is for you. And also, it features an amazing cast of seasoned veterans and new comers as well.

All in all, a nice CD.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This CD is a classic.......2005-03-10

I've listened to this CD a number of times now and one has to wonder why Neal Morse isn't a household name. But, this is the tragedy of the age of Brocolli Spears and boy bands. Anyway, cuts like ALL THE YOUNG GIRLS CRY and THE CHANGE are great. Morse's voice is so unique. The music on this CD is impeccable. This is a recommended buy.

5 out of 5 stars So What if it's Not Prog?.......2002-11-22

First off, I don't think anyone has complained lately about having too much Neal Morse around.

Now, this album is really good, even without having any "The Great Nothing"s, "The Doorway"s or "The Water"s. This is an album that both you and your girlfriend can enjoy. The entire album is filled with the writing skills and musicianship that we have all come to love from a one Mr. Neal Morse.

The idea behind this solo effort was to create as live of a studio performance as possible. This was done by recording the vocals, piano and drums (played by none other than NDV) live from the same room. It allows for Neal and Nick to play off each other, as done superbly in "The Wind and the Rain." The listener almost feels like they could be in the room watching these two jam.

As expected, this album also hosts songs from Neal's pre-Spock's Beard life. The most stirring example, and I think the highlight of the album, is "I am Your Father," which Neal recorded for this album with old bandmates from the 80s. This song is quite possibly one of the best NM songs out there. This should be the reason to get this album!

Overall, there are 13 really good songs here. They aren't all happy songs, but they are all very emotional. You can tell how much these songs mean to Neal. And that just makes the whole album fun. It's a good easy listen. It's easy to get into. And it's perfectly safe for any family car trip. And until we hear from Neal Morse again, this album will stay high in my CD rotation.

3 out of 5 stars fine and definitely not prog.......2002-08-15

Fans of Spock's Beard rushing to buy this album may be slightly disappointed that this album lacks the musical noodling that marks them out as prog rock leaders, the rest of us will simply be relieved. This is an album of solid songs well sung. It has the rough, live feel that Morse was clearly looking for - particularly the drumming and the songs benfit from that. Some of the album is a bit aor and the quality dips by the end where some of the songs are a bit too long but overall an enjoyable album.

3 out of 5 stars Electric Scotto.......2002-09-25

I like much of Scotto's artistry, but this is just not her cup of tea. Her high notes sound like they are plugged into an electric socket! AHHHHH!!!... Even her usual, wonderful word painting is not there. Her Vien's at the end of the garden scene are worse than the most mushy mouthed Sutherland (who could at least produce beautiful sounds). Get the Sony arias disc with Renata Scotto, which, oddly enough, shows her in much better and firmer voice, even though it was recorded later.

Ghiaurov is magnificent, as always and Kraus provides more elegant support than many of his later recordings.
If you want a verismo-like performance, get the recording with Freni (awesome......the largest voiced Margie on record). Domingo is dramatic, beautiful, if without a great high C. The final trio is SO dramatic. Hmmmm, what to buy?

5 out of 5 stars Unique Kraus in exceptional Faust.......2000-06-22

One of the aspects that made of Alfredo Kraus an exceptional singer was the care with which he chose the roles that resulted most adequate to his voice and temper. Faust was one of these paradigmatic roles, but unfortunatelly he never made a studio recording of this opera. The Tokio live recording of 1973 is thus an exceptional substitute and probably the only chance to enjoy the master's full Faust. By the time of this recording, he was at the highest point of his carreer, and we may appreciate here his precise technique, the delicacy of this style and the adequacy of his voice for the French repertoire. His 'Salut, demeure ... ' is a masterclass of singing. Ghiaurov follows the tradition of the Russian and Bulgarian basses and composes an overacted but vocally splendid Mephistophèles. He was also at the highest point of his carreer. Renata Scotto was an irregular soprano, but her Margheritte is excellent (probably only surpassed on records by Victoria de los Angeles in this role). Ethuin's direction is agile, perhaps too rapid in the choirs. The quality of the sound is good, and the price is astonishingly low. The complete recording of the Tokio version is rare and very difficult to get, so this selection of highlights is an alternative to consider seriously. Given the low price of this CD, it is a must for any opera lover and Kraus fan.

        Album Description

A fine collection of songs about loss and renewal, somewhere between Don Henley and Ben Folds, this more piano oriented album moves, inspires and is generally very nice on the ears. Featuring Nick D'Virgilio on the drums. Mixed by Terry Christian. Radiant Records. 2001.
