4 out of 5 stars jangly guitars and upbeat pop with a twist of country twang........1999-01-07

This album combines the vocals of Sam Prekop from the Sea and Cake with twangy country style guitars and even a banjo, with a grounded but jaunty rhythm section. A great goofy listen for those days when you have the blues and blues is not what you're looking for... a reminder that life should be enjoyed.

5 out of 5 stars great work!!.......2005-10-19

I've been following Paco de Lucia since i was 11 years old, but i haven't had acces to his early work 60's and 70's and this record was an excellent example of how his work started to grew up.

5 out of 5 stars An essential and ground-breaking recording.......1999-12-04

This is what I call Paco's "break away" album. Paco was already recognized as the most technically accomplished Flamenco guitarist ever, the "rising star" of Flamenco, before this album's release. However, until "El Duende Flamenco," Paco had not fully developed his own, distinctive "toque"; i.e., a unique style and, most important, a full set of unique creations.

It is difficult to impart the impact this album had on Flamenco in general and on Flamenco guitarists in particular these more than three decades later. I will never forget the first time I heard it, lying on the floor of a small apartment in Madrid in 1972, the year the album was released. The first cut, a zapateado, was one of four cuts on the album where Paco plays with an orchestra. Arranged by the knowledgeable and very talented Jose Torregrosa, it instantly revealed Paco's musicianship and musicality, which were of such a degree as to place him head and shoulders above any other Flamenco guitarist, past or present.

Two times before an attempt was made to place Flamenco guitar with an orchestra, both of which were musical failures. One was by Sabicas, who was a great guitarist and innovator, the other by Carlos Montoya, a fraud when presented to the public as a virtuoso. In both cases, however, they played what they always played while a composer sought to build an orchestration around them. In contrast, Paco plays here WITH the orchestra, and his compositions (in addition to the zapateado, a farruca, a guajira and a rondeña/canastera) are just that: Complete musical compositions. With a few notable exceptions, until Paco the majority of Flamenco guitarists just strung together a collection of falsetas ("riffs"), but here Paco created themes to which he constantly returned in multiple variations. (His inspiration for this "compositional" style of flamenco were those "few notable exceptions": Sabicas, Mario Escudero and, most notably, Esteban Sanlucar.) Particularly at that time, the overall effect was startling.

The next cut was an alegria uniquely played in a minor mode, and it was a revelation. Again, an entire composition rather than a string of falsetas, major seventh cords which had rarely before been used in Flamenco, and other innovations. To anyone with a depth of knowledge about Flamenco, "genius," in the truest sense of the word, came to mind.

By the third cut, a rondeña, there were tears in my eyes. The rondeña was made into a guitar piece by Ramon Montoya several decades before, who made the innovation of tuning two strings differently (the base E down to D, the G a half-step down). Until this recording, every rondeña played by any guitarist was essentially a variation of Ramon's original creation. Paco's rondeña changed all the rules, and once again added a depth of musicianship that had for the most part been missing from Flamenco.

Every single cut on this album was revolutionary for its time, and with it Paco almost single handedly raised the Flamenco guitar to world-class - and the musicianship necessary to play it.

One other thing should be noted: Paco was only 24 when he made this recording. "Genius" is, indeed, the word.

Having revolutionized the small world of Flamenco artists and aficionados, the next year Paco would catapult beyond those small confines and achieve true national popularity in Spain with "Fuente y Caudal" (pieces of which have been re-released under many different names, such as "Entre Dos Aguas," named for the most famous cut on that album). And it was all due to a caprice: When he finished that album in 1973, there were a few minutes left, and Jose Torregrosa, Paco's regular producer at Phillips, suggested that he play a rumba Paco had been experimenting with, using bongos and an electric base (neither of which had ever been used before in purist Flamenco recordings). Paco obliged, and Torregrosa, always with a nose for what might sell, made it the first cut on the album. That one cut, Entre Dos Aguas, created another revolution beyond the bounds of Flamenco, of which Ottmar Liebert and his minions are a direct result - much to Paco's and all other aficionados' chagrin. But that's another story.

Bottom line: This album is a "must have" for any serious collection of Flamenco recordings. It can arguably be called the first recording of "new" Flamenco.

5 out of 5 stars This CD is about the Flamenco Muisic, not about technique.......1999-09-08

Every track on this CD is a superb musical masterpiece - most have orchestral arrangements in the best modern classical taste. The pieces themselves are the best examples of the "golden" era of Paco's compositions. This is not flamenco dance music - the whole CD is more "classical flamenco" (there is no singing at all - just pure Music). I would say this CD stands out among all of Paco's CDs.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but no Siroco.......1999-02-19

The last 4 tracks on this disc are great. The others are less of a showcase of Paco's immense talent. All things considered, it's worth picking up.

Maybe someone didn't like his music or his style.

But no doubt, Esteban (Stephen Paul) is really a man with real great guitar skill and he play with feeling. Need not to mention he's a student of Andres Segovia.

I've bought other albums but not yet arrive, can't tell you other is bad or not. But I've listen to Duende for years, it's recording and performance is WORTH buy it within 0.1s without hesistate, miss this album will be your greatest regret if you really love guitar music.

5 out of 5 stars One of his best!.......2005-08-21

Duende is one of my two favorite Esteban CD's. (The other is Enter The Heart.) Esteban's exceptional skill as a guitar virtuouso and composer are amply demonstrated on this CD. A mosaic of world music, "Lotus Wind" evokes images of India, while "Duende," Romanza Andaluz," and "Valse Criollo" paint pictures of Spain. "Mesopotamia" and "River of Man" weave fascinating textures. Duende is an wonderful CD that showcases Esteban's amazing talents!

1 out of 5 stars Very Bad CD.......2004-12-22

STOP! Hey before you buy this cd, let me tell you something: This is not a Spanish Guitar player, not even a Spanish like one. This guy is just a begginer-like player, he's harmonically and technicaly handicapped. Somebody has to stop this guy. Tell him the truth: You can't play! I don't know what did he do to get his contract, but when i heard this cd, this came to me: He's the William Hung of the Guitar, that maybe learned to play with the AKORDES tuition software. Not even him would buy this cd! I repeat, DO NOT BUY THIS TRASH! PS: if you dont know who william hung is, visit his site: http://www.williamhung.net .

4 out of 5 stars DUENDE IS HIS BEST!.......2001-04-11

Esteban (Stephan Paul) is at his best on Duende. Despite what is said in the info for this album. It was released in 1989 NOT 1969. Anyway, this is his shining debut and by far the best recorded album he has made to date.

Conjuring the aroma of jasmine, wafting on a warm southern breeze or moonlight on the sandy beach of a gently rippling ocean, these arrangements of well-known favorites evoke feelings subtle, sensual... suave. Supported by an ensemble including latin percussion, piano, sax, flute, sitar and fretless bass. Mr. Arizaga's impeccable fingerwork on the guitar greates a performance soulful and seductive. Reminiscent of a balmy summer evening.

With the dizzying array of recordings on the market claiming to be flamenco, it's hard for someone looking to discover the music to figure out what the music is, let alone which of the thousands of records available are worth the price. For both novices and those wishing to expand their knowledge of this Afro-Andalusian-Gypsy music, this three-CD set with a detailed and entertaining book is a must. From the deepest, most heart-stomping roots to the slickest pop crossovers, this set has endeavored to distill centuries of evolution into a few hours, and actually succeeds rather nicely. Whether your taste is for the simple guitar and palmas accompanying the raw, wrenching voice of Terremoto de Jerez, the Afro-Spanish explorations of Toumani Diabate, or the youthful exuberance of Pata Negra's flamenco rock, this set has it covered. Important artists are given a wider listening (the Paco de Lucia tracks offers a traditional bulerias instead of the jazz fusions he is well-known for). The whole set would be worth its price just to hear the gorgeous tones of La Niña de los Peines, whose voice was one of the wonders of the flamenco world. Her 1930s recording included in this set is priceless. --Louis Gibson

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Consider buying the second disc, "Magic," separately.......2000-02-12

This is an excellent collection of flamenco music. There are three discs; one comprises mainly singers, another artists who are stretching the genre into new areas, and one, called "Magic," is dedicated to guitarists. This last one is the only one I listen to. Granted, I am a guitarist with an interest in playing and listening to guitar-centered flamenco. However, I would guess that many associate flamenco with dazzling guitar playing. And that is what this CD offers with most tracks having a level of recording clarity often absent in flamenco compilations. The tracks, particularly the more recently recorded ones on the front half of the CD, are all truly amazing. This is easily stands out as my favorite flamenco compilation. If what you like about flamenco is the flashy guitar playing, consider buying this CD by itself - they are all sold separately.

2 out of 5 stars Please don't call it flamenco.......2005-04-14

It's interesting and pretty music, but it ain't flamenco. Sorry. Neither is Oscar Lopez, Jesse Cook, Armik, etc. I'm not putting them down as guitarists, nor as artists. I'm not putting them down. The trouble is that companies like Narade will put out CD's that juxtapose true flamenco artists like Tomatito, El Viejin, Morente, etc, and mix them with this new age guitar stuff. Unfortunately, the flamenco artists agree to the distribution because they need the money, and these new age guitarists agree to it for probably the same reason. I say save your money and get a Vicente Amigo CD and be prepared to be blown away.

4 out of 5 stars absolutely exotic.......2003-05-27

This selection will take you to a far way land. I have found myself driving 80 miles an hour down I-95 listening to #5 Asturias XXI. This is my second purchase by Encinas and I am waiting for AURORA to arrive any day. Beauty is said to be in the eye of the beholder......music is no different. You must hear in order to appreciate this album's beauty.

1 out of 5 stars Unsure of what he want to be........2003-02-15

I cannot understand what Jose is trying to do. He is unable to find a style that represents him. He seems talented, but does not represent his talent very well with his selection of weak songs that fail to exude the passion he claims to be trying to communicate.

2 out of 5 stars Too manufactured for my tastes.......2001-08-01

How do I say it? It just lacks soul, and I'm sorry I can't give you a more sophisticated description than that. I'm not a flamenco purist, but I stilld don't care for the artificial sounds of New Age music.

I gave this album a good try but couldn't get over the heavy bass and other synthetic sounds in the arrangement that performed more like a computer than a musician. On its own the guitar work was pleasant.

However, if your tastes tend toward New Age music and innovative sound mixtures, then this might be for you.

5 out of 5 stars The most sensual ever.......2001-06-14

The artist never proclaims to be pure flamenco, but the flamenco guitar is the basis for all of the tracks. I found this to be the most sensual and hauntingly beautiful CD I've ever owned. If the first four tracks don't get you in the mood for love...well, then, you have other problems. I write romantic novels and Senor Encinas certainly provides the right mood.
