HURRICANE RITA....SORRY I MEAN CHITA.......2005-12-09

Bajour had most of all the ingredients for a successful show. Talented cast, colorful costumes, witty scenery, tuneful and lively songs, torrid choreography and the fantastic and uncannily thrilling dancing of Chita Rivera who single-handedly nearly caused a fire alarm from the sparks shooting from her heels. The problem which could not be solved was the book which was too convaluted and had a premise stretched beyond the breaking point. Nancy Dussault as Emily is a student who in order to obtain a degree in anthropology must write a thesis on the primitive customs of a tribe. She settles on a "tribe' of Gypsies in NYC and that was the stretch that stopped the show from becoming a hit and a shame it is to anyone who hears the delightful score. The cd is now out of print but worthwhile for theatre buffs if it becomes available again but unfortunatly the fiery dancing of Ms Rivera (on the numbers 'The Haggle' 'Mean' 'Bajour' and 'The Sew-up' the last not on the cd because it is a dance number only)can't be appreciated.

BAJOUR is a winner, maybe for all the wrong reasons........2004-10-31

First I had the piano score, then I had to get the vinyl, and then, thank goodness, the CD came out to preserve this relic of a simpler and more innocent time in musical theatre history. BAJOUR had a short life back in the days when a Broadway season had lots of shows to choose from and budgets weren't sky-high. So, what's the deal with this one? Well, listen to "Guarantees" and "Words, Words, Words," for starters. Just terrible....but in such a wonderful, Broadway sort of way, that you have to listen to the entire show. Then there's "Love Line," which as a piano solo is very pretty. And "Honest Man," a good, old-fashioned Broadway "show stopping" number. MY FAIR LADY it ain't, but good-bad Broadway it is, with Chita Rivera, Herschel Bernardi, et al, belting 'em out in the type of show that, alas, doesn't come along very often, but, in the 60's did, more often than not. (By the way, if you want another show that fits in this particular good-bad 60's mold, try I HAD A BALL, with Buddy Hackett and Richard Kiley.)

A very nice score........2003-01-20

The CD of Bajour is the perfect example of a "nice" Broadway show: Plesant score with a few nice songs such as "Words, Words, Words" and "Where is the Tribe for Me", but nothing groundbreaking or remarkable about it. Great performance by Chita Rivera, Nancy Dussault and, Herschel Bernardi also help. A good CD for Broadway fans.

THE perfect example of the minor broadway musical.......2000-01-26

a generation ago -- or two -- the broadway musical season would usually produce one blockbuster, several flops, and 2 or 3 "nice shows" that would play to theatre parties and tourists and show queens, and then after six months to a year, close at a modest profit or a modest loss.

BAJOUR is a classic of this type of show. it is replete with almost hilarious comedy songs, and almost lovely ballads. its ambitions were modest, but it accomplished them 100%. and there are some great performances here by broadway legend chita rivera, and the sadly ignored and underrated nancy dussault.

if you expect every show to be MY FAIR LADY, this album is not for you. but if you want to spend a thoroughly enjoyable hour listening to what the broadway musical once was, you cannot do better than BAJOUR!

Catchy tunes with two star turns........1998-11-23

Chita Rivera and Nancy Dussault are the stars of this show. The score isn't wonderful, but there are plenty of tunes to keep you humming. Two songs, "Mean" and "I Can," demonstrate why Ms Rivera has been a plus for any musical production

not to great.......2007-04-04

We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.

Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22

I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.

You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.

I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

This album is a wonderful collection of lesser heard Copland gems. The performances have the excitement one always expects from Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops, and it is ever a special treat to hear Sherrill Milnes. A very enjoyable CD.

I don't remember how I came across PJ, but wherever/whoever it was recommended it if you're into Beck.

To be sure, there are some Beck similarities, but PJ also has his own voice and sound, and is in no way a Beck clone. Some of the songs are quite soulful. As an example, recently, I had the ipod on "shuffle play", and had to do a double take on the menu display, as at first, I mistook "People" for a Chocolate Genius song.

There are a couple of throwaways here, but most of the record is mildly psychedelic, quite catchy, and very listenable over time.

Might Have Sounded Better In an Unplugged Version.......2002-01-12

I've been listening to this disk about once a day this month for some reason.

Musically it's uptempo and hovers somewhere between catchy and annoying. The Beck influence looms large, productionwise. The songwriting is decent, not particularly accomplished but the appealing personality of the performer comes through, making the album sort of charming, albeit in a modern sort of Hollywood-decadent way.

The instrumentation is gimicky and distracting. The songs are written for a dude and an acoustic guitar and then jazzed up with various studio stuff: clap tracks, strings, piano, sitar, backwards-spinning drum track, semi-distracting samples etc.

Thematically it tends toward jaded-though-hopeful love songs. The sexual imagery and orientation proclaimed here and there in the lyrics (so matter-of-factly!) is perhaps the most modern thing about this work. I found that aspect inspirational/challenging. A few of the lyrics have a twist or irony to them and make you laugh when you realize what he's actually saying. I liked the lyrics of sideburn-agenda, park benches, God speaks your name to me through rock songs (!), and also the dream about Josef Stalin.

Words For Living is good, competent, sometimes charming, possibly offensive singer-songwriter stuff that will either connect with you or not. I put it down for a few months, a bit disappointed in the purchase, but, having come back to it now, find it kind of catchy. Several songs on it will sound great on any mix tape you make, especially Good Dream, I Am the Sun, and Visine.

A Must Listen For Any Music Fan.......2001-10-16

I first heard of PJ through my newspaper saying he'd be on Letterman (local boy makes good) one night. I watched it, of course, and was very impressed but I never got around to buying the CD. Then, a week ago I was trying to figure out what music to buy so I figured I'd give a fellow Yooper a try. I was very impressed. These songs are all deeply layered and intriguing, and I'd recommend this CD to anyone who really appreciates pop-music by it's actual definition, not by the Britney-Christina-Backstreet definition. I'd also recommend this CD to Beck fans, especially those who think Odelay is his greatest album.

post millenium geek pop.......2000-10-31

Critics are calling PJ's blend of pop rock post millenium, pushing rock n roll in new directions which is true. His mix of standard guitar, bass and drums overlapped with electronic sequencing fails, however, at truely engaging the listener with any emotion. In addition, its very difficult to get over PJ's geeky vocal delivery and his lyrics leave much to be desired. Peace, love and understanding is a noble pursuit however PJ's music does nothing to keep the listener wanting to hear more. Rather it provides a bouncy, upbeat soundtrack that annoys rather than intrigues. Noble effort, better luck next time.

I heard him 6 years ago.......2000-07-07

Just saw PJ and his band perform at Bimbo's in SF 7/6, and they were awesome. Even with a sparce crowd of industry type people, by the end of the gig everyone was on their feet. I met PJ 6 years ago through a friend of his and have followed his work. He is not only an amazing singer but is also the creative force behind the music. His musical ability is at genious level. He is a rising star of the next century and will define a new an awesome genre in a space that is begging for fresh talent. GO PJ!

This eighty-five year old retired teacher, played a record of PETER AND THE WOLF for many Third Graders. One of those little boys became a music teacher in the Denver Public Schools and later traveled to visit the homes of many composers in foreign lands.

Knut Nystedt was born in 1915, and is still alive and active in 2003 to my knowledge. He has been knighted by HM King Olav V of his native Norway for his contribution to music. He also has numerous other awards for his work, inclucing a Distinguished Service Citation from the Augsburg College in Minneapolis for his contributions to US musical life. He specialises in choral music and started "The Norwegian Soloists Choir", who have premiered a great many of his original compositions, but he has also composed orchestral music. His works are performed all over the world. He studied with Aaron Copeland, amongst others, and his style is unmistakably modern. His compositions vary in intensity from ppp to fff, use a modern tonal language and choral effects like hovering chords. He is usually excellent at the balancing act between creativity and unlistenability - most of the works I know are just very interesting.

It's a shame only this recoring of his choral music is available on Amamzon, because several others exist.

If you like choral music by Britten, Kodaly or Pärt, you should definitely give this a try!

This CD is worth the price. The music is hauntingly beautiful, the immortal Bach track makes your spine tingle in that familiar way (music-lovers will understand...). The singing is fantastic - overtones are present with the impecable intonation. All in all a good buy with hours of repeated listening provided.
