The bassist Tony Levin, widely known for his work with cultural luminaries such as King Crimson, Peter Gabriel, and John Lennon, maintains an active (though lower-profile) solo career. Waters of Eden, officially Levin's second solo outing, is assuredly his most mature. While the album can loosely be termed New Age, it meets with streams of art rock, eddies of jazz, and even tributaries of classical. But whether in the Gabrielesque intensity of "Bone & Flesh," the graceful title cut, or the sinister "Pillar of Fire," there's a coherence to the album imparted by Levin's characteristically dreamy, fluid bass lines--fat, lyrical sinews that twine the songs together. Levin makes frequent use of homophony, doubling the high and low parts for sonorous, trancelike effect. And while he's careful not to let the bass playing dominate the record, it's wonderful to hear Levin's unbridled spirit on cuts such as "Icarus" and "Boulevard of Dreams," a haunting duet with the pianist Warren Bernhardt. More homogenous than Levin's 1993 solo debut, World Diary, and less forced than From the Caves of the Iron Mountain (a fascinating collaboration with drummer Jerry Marotta and the flutist Steve Gorn), Waters of Eden is nothing if not whole--both seamless and complete--and it's undoubtedly the most personal statement in Levin's 30-plus-year recording career. --Michael Mikesell

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Different Levin album........2002-09-30

It's pleasant from Mr.Levin that he recorded such a kind of instrumental music, I'm pleased that it shows Tony's ability to be a different. "Waters Of Eden" more personal, sonorous, passionate and quiet, Mr. Levin's playing needs no dithyrambs, he is a man who deserved attention even of my eight years old daughter , with his deep melodic bass lines and cello playing. All compositions are beautiful to listen, a mellow album. Tony at it best.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully eclectic, beautifully melodic.......2002-06-18

A side of Mr.Levin you rarely hear who brings out the flowing sensitivity in the voice of a bass. Jazz and world music infused with melodic tapestries all his own, this album has not one bad track. From a drifting bittersweet journey in the title track "Water of Eden" to a more upbeat "Gecko Walk" there is beautiful imaging of sound and texture. No doubt, for those that appreciate musicianship and art in their music, this is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars "Waters of Eden" branches out to many tastes in music.......2002-06-13

Bass legend Tony Levin's 2000 release is a much more balanced and mellower disc compared to his newest 2002 release "Pieces of the Sun" which has a much harder progressive rock edge to it.
"Waters of Eden" is a mix of classical and world music.
Levin plays bass, upright bass and yes, cello. As usual Levin has many talented and great musicians contributing to this disc.
Stand out tracks are Icarus, Gecko Walk and my personal favorite "Belle" a track where Levin is accompanied by his brother, Pete on synth. The track is dedicated to their mother, Belle and is a beautifully recorded song.
It's a mesmerizing blend of many styles of music and again Levin triumphs. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Great, Melodic, different.......2002-02-17

This guy has played with everyone who is anyone in the music world. He can play anything. You don't even notice his playing half the time because it is so natural to the music. This album, is an unusual collection of melodies, each one crafted individually. Its the kind of music you can put on and listen to, and choose to either pay attention to it or not. Great stuff from a great player
