. . . Among odd rhythmic-configurations you do not only detect an obviously loving care for details, but also the masterly use of inserted vocal-fragments.
Product Description
"Paint" is the debut album of the Swedish duo Jan Vertsberg and Robert Bergqvist, supported with vocals at several tracks by Thomas Myrberg, Fredrik Möller, Mattias and Mia Wedin. Strange soundsculptures with unusual vocals alternate with rhythmic tracks, several might be even find its way into clubs. Jan Vertsberg and Mattias Wedin use their voices masterly at the limits between elemental cries and humor, mysterious lyrics appear at several tracks, and together with the unconventional instrumental parts the album presents a typical release of the FRANK MARK ARTS collection-- timeless away from the mainstream.

New Age diva Enya first became widely known when her 1988 album Watermark sold 4 million copies and launched the single "Orinoco Flow." Her follow-up, Shepherd Moons, was even more successful, selling over 10 million copies despite its slightly lower grade of ethereal enchantment. In 1997 she released Paint the Sky with Stars, an assortment of her best work from these two early albums plus gems from 1995's The Memory of Trees and the soundtrack to the BBC series The Celts. The most melodic and atmospheric examples of Enya's lovely Celtic-flavored songwriting shine on this disc. Those unfamiliar with the former Clannad member will find charm in such sweet lullabies as "Marble Halls" and "China Roses" while delighting in the more energetic "Book of Days," "Storms in Africa," and "Caribbean Blue." Overall, an outstanding collection from an artist who gives New Age a good name. --Karen Karleski

And love this album. Not many things can "take me away" and help me relax like listening to Paint the Sky with Stars.
Anyone who loves harmony will enjoy this album.
Serenity Now!.......2007-07-10
I've listened to this CD over and over and I never get tired of it. Enya's music is so wonderfully soothing and serene. I recommend listening to this one while driving to keep road rage at bay!
Real Ear-Candy.......2007-07-07
As a musician myself I'm always searching for the ultimate unique musical experience and Enya's music is timeless. This "best of collection" will deliver hours of listening please. Enya's multi-layered voice textures, that give her music its uniqueness, are soothing to the ears. Real ear-candy!

A Sound All Her Own !.......2007-07-06
Oh, Wow! This is a cd that will be liked by all who enjoy M E H D I, C E L T IC or even Loreena Mckinnett. It is the very essence of good new age. So tranquil, yet so spirited, this cd is a refreshing break from my well-worn collection, I just keep wanting to listen to it over and over again. I am amazed! It reminds me somewhat of Celtic Women, but still very unique. This is music to the soul. Absolutely relaxing, as well.
ALSO RECOMMENDED: M E H D I ~ Instrumental Paradise Volume 8..A True Gem.
Mood Music, some good, some bad.......2007-06-27
Enya's music is spacey with airy singing. Much of it is genuinely moving and touches emotions, but other tunes make the listener almost want to die. Definitely mood music. Good songs:
Orinoco Flow
Carribean Blue - very ethereal
Book of Days
Celts
Anywhere Is
Only If
The Celts
Paint the Sky with Stars - not a good song. I mention it as illustrative of my above comment. This is a real downer. Don't listen to it if you are struggling with suicidal thoughts in your life. I'm not just making a bad joke with this comment; it is truly mournful.
Overall the first half is more enjoyable. Album could have 5 stars if it had maintained that pace, but the 2nd half is much more depressing rather than emotive

"No name city" is great!.......2007-03-29
My husband and I always enjoyed watching Paint Your Wagon. The CD is the musical soundtrack. If you liked the movie and the singing, you will definitely like this one!
Hand me down that can of beans!.......2007-02-27
Excellent music. Bad track transitions. Well worth it at under $10 despite the abrupt endings.
Hated the movie but love the soundtrack.......2006-07-19
I was not a fan of Paint Your Wagon. While watching the movie, the songs were dull and boring. All except "They Call the Wind Maria". I love Harve Presnell's (also of The Unsinkable Molly Brown) voice. It's so rich and strong and expressive. I bought the CD just for that song. Now I've started to listen to the full CD as I'm getting ready for my day and I've come to love more of the songs. Still not all, but they are fun and some of the voices are just beautiful. Give the soundtrack a chance even if the movie was a dissapointment for you.
"The Gospel Of No Name City"...Fabulous... Wanted More Of it!.......2006-04-20
This review refers to the "Paint Your Wagon" soundtrack, CD(MCA)
What's not to like? This music from "Paint Your Wagon" is as much a joy as the film itself. The story of a gold mining town, full of burly men who haven't see a woman in like forever, was one of the most fun, bawdy and raucous musicals of it's time. The men hoping to strike it rich("I'm On My Way"), the joy of seeing a woman, the lonely life("They Call The Wind Maria"), the lack of scruples("the Gospel of No Name City"), the friendships, the romance("I Talk To the Tress"), the hijacking of a wagon load of prostitutes to fill the town needs("There's A Coach Comin' In"), the lust for the gold ("Gold Fever"), and moving on("Wanderin Star"), all tell the story on this fabulous album.
The music is sung by the original cast and chorus. This includes the vocal stylings of Clint Eastwood("I Still See Elisa") and Lee Marvin(""The First Thing You Know"), making this album a treasure right there. But top that off with the rich tones of Harve Presnell("Maria"), the fun sound of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band("Hand Me Down That Can O' Beans"), Music by Loewe, Lerner and Previn, the wonderful orchestrations, and I repeat..What's not to like???
I love it. I usually play it twice through each time I take it out for a listen.Right from the opening Main Title Theme("I'm On My Way"), sung in all the different languages of the miners, it made me smile as it brought back memories of the film. Now I am no expert, but someone mentioned that "Wanderin' Star" was not done by Lee Marvin on this album, as it was in the film. It sure sounded like Marvin's deep voice to me. I put the DVD on(of course I got sidetracked watching the entire film again),to check it out, and it sounded identical to the CD. The leaflet that is included with the CD has the singers by the film character's names, and then has the cast list as well. "Wanderin Star" shows sung by Ben Rumson, and Ben Rumson was of course, Lee Marvin.
The final song, the "Finale" is a wonderful medley of all the songs in the film, including Jean Seberg's turn at the beautiful "A Million Miles Behind The Door"(also included on the CD).
A fabulous CD from a fabulous film. The only down side is that it could have been longer. Even if just more of the score. This musical film is around 2 hours and 45 minutes. The CD is a mere 46 minutes(14 tracks, see buying info for complete list).. So 4 and 1/2 stars, but a must have for lovers of this film. Sound Quality was Great too!

Must I Paint You a Picture is a generous, two-disc, 40-track survey of Bragg's career to date. The tracklisting was apparently assembled with the help of Bragg's fans, who were asked to vote for their favourites on Bragg's website, but this democratic initiative has only been taken so far: while "Little Time Bomb", for example, was a more popular choice than, say, "The Boy Done Good", the latter is included and the former isn't. It would, of course, be uncharitable to suggest that this is reflective of the authoritarian instincts that lurk inside most socialists.
At any rate, though Bragg has always been chiefly characterised as a political songwriter, his best work has always been that which deals with the politics of the personal: there are few more acute summations of the eternal failure of the male and female to make sense to each other than his "How can you lie there and think of England when you don't even know who's in the team?" Bragg's superb love songs and love-gone-wrong songs are well represented here, from the angry, naive scratchings of "The Milkman of Human Kindness" to such older, if no wiser, musings as "Moving the Goalposts" and "Sulk". Curiously, his older, politically motivated songs now feel like they've reacquired an urgency they lacked during a 1990s largely devoid of stark ideological boundaries, when they sounded rather like quaint period pieces. The so-called war on terror and the increasing discomfort about global trade both have ready made soundtracks in "Between the Wars" and "There is Power in a Union". --Andrew Mueller
Customer Reviews:
The best of Billy Bragg is pretty good!.......2006-08-23
I love Billy Bragg's lefty politics, his rough, un-taught voice and his tremendous guitar playing, but most I just love his courage. He's a good, at times clever song writer - "Walk Away Renee" was a nice surprise, and you just should have him in your catalog.
A welcome mat for everyone.......2006-06-19
Now there's a way for people unfmailiar with Billy get an overview of his music from above. I've loved his lyrical abilities and evocative music that fuses both a folkie sensibility and a gritty modern edge for a long time. Very few other present day bands can do this well. Outgrabe is one of the most successful, and they've clearly been influenced by Billy, the grand old man of this genre. I wish Billy all the luck in the world, and I'm sure this CD will draw new fans into his musical space.
A POOR MAN's WOODY GUTHRIE........2006-04-18
Billy Bragg thinks he's a modern day Woody Guthrie, championing the poor working class. Unfortunately he is not.Not only is he a hypocrite by writing for the right wing press when it suits him, but i find his 'right on' attitude rather nauseating. This is a man that supports a certain Mr Blair and is proud to do so. Therefore i fine his music rather patronising to people that (unlike him) are really struggling. Mr Bragg wouldn't know real suffering if it crawled up and bit him. At least Steve Earle walks it like he talks it! Beware of songwriters who claim to be working class they invariably aren't!
Essential in deed - a truly great English songwriter.......2005-12-06
Listening to Billy Bragg is a very English thing to do. Perhaps British, but definitely English. His Essex consonants, largely unreconstructed by the passing years, his wonderfully vernacular use of the language (he even mentions Marmite, food of the gods, on "England, Half English"), songs about God-bothering footballers, unrequited boyhood lust at the school disco, and best of all, his withering political polemics laced with laugh out loud humour ("trapped in a hairstyle he no longer believes in").
Politics is what most people associate Billy with, and for sure he did his share in the eighties ("I was doing about 300 gigs a year and only got paid for half of them - why should I be nostalgic for the eighties?") and still cares now. He still backs fair unions against bad bosses, supports hospices and fair trade campaigns, and believes that a better world is actually possible - only some kind of idiot thinks that is a bad thing, surely.
But let's not forget that Billy has written some great songs about love and life as real people live it. "St Swithins" day is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard, aching in its sense of loss and grimy ordinariness. "Tank Park Salute" is a gorgeous and brave song about Billy's relationship with his father. There are many more in his canon. Like Dylan, like Guthrie, Bragg is not a "protest" singer to the exclusion of all else.
Perhaps "New England", written early in his career, still sums up a lot of what Billy is about. It's a cracking tune, with a great chorus, which cheerfully pokes gentle English fun at his own political interests ("I'm not looking for a new England, I'm just looking for another girl") whilst being ostensibly a break-up song, and still manages to deliver one of the funniest lines in rock music - "I saw two shooting stars last night / I wished on them, but they were only satellites / Is it wrong to wish on space hardware?".
A great English songwriter, who is increasingly a great contributor to modern debates on the nature of Englishness and the future of our nation. A national treasure in fact.
Long may he reign.
And another thing: in concert he is very good and very, very funny. He has an apparently bottomless fund of great stories and witty one-liners, fuelled by his ever present cup of tea, and even manages to make political discourses a laugh.
An excellent compilation, as well as three excellent independent discs........2005-11-07
Based upon the fact that I only knew two songs ("New England" and "To Have and Have Not"), buying these CD's was a huge gamble. Not only did I find out upon purchasing it that I like Billy Bragg, but I discovered I LOVE Billy Bragg. This collection is not only a comprehensive and fairly complete sampling of his work, it is also a set of three albums, astounding unto themselves.
The first disc is more bare-bones than the other two (and my favorite) featuring Bragg's characteristically clever songwriting and sparse musical accompaniment. This is of course, not without exception, most notable the fuller sounding "Great Leap Forwards", among several others.
The second disc is a slight departure from the aforementioned sound, without deviating completely from Bragg's traditional style. More instruments, more production. My personal favorite from this one is "Way Over Yonder In the Minor Key", which features backing vocals from a woman who sounds uncannily like Natalie Merchant to me...however, I could easily be mistaken.
The third disc is the shortest, however, nonetheless amazing as well.
I constantly find myself reaching for this cd, and the only disappointment I have is that Billy Bragg is such an underrated artist here in America.

Product Description
You might not immediately recognize the name Ken Nordine, but we bet youd recognize the voice. Hes done literally thousands of commercials, including Tasters Choice, Levis, the Chicago Blackhawks, Fuller Paint, and tons of others. He is a frequent contributor to NPR, and has guest-starred on the Hal Willner Disney tribute album, Stay Awake.
But the thing he is probably best loved for is a series of albums released in the late Fifties on Dot Records called Word Jazz. The four albums, recorded between 1957 and 1960, have been anthologized several times over the course of their history (including a vinyl collection on Blue Thumb and a CD on Rhino), but they have never before been made available on CD in their entirety.
Youre Getting Better: The Word Jazz Dot Masters contains all 49 tracks from the original albums, plus the bonus track from the Blue Thumb compilation, plus five previously unreleased tracks newly discovered in the vaults, on two compact discs. In all, 27 tracks make their CD debut.
Not only was Nordine involved with the project at every step, he also invited some of his celebrated friends to contribute; both Laurie Anderson and Tom Waits have authored notes for the release, as has Nordines long-time engineer, engineer, Jim Cunningham. Needless to say, Ken has also written some notes, and has provided some rare photos for the set.
Painstakingly remastered in 2005 from the original master tapes, Youre Getting Better also contains all of the notes from the highly collectable and extremely rare original vinyl releases.

opening titles music?.......2006-02-08
Hi.
Does anyone know what is the music from the opening titles of the movie? It is before the song Omiya starts. It is not included in the CD and i'd like to know the title.
Great Indian Mystery, well-done.......2005-07-16
This is a very nice album for esoteric enthusiasts to add to their Indian mix.
I love Indian Music.......2005-07-05
I love the movie Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love. Indira Varhma and Sarita Chowdery are very, very beautiful women. And the music in the movie was hott! Especially the song at Princess Tara's wedding where everyone is dancing and Maya is serving the guests in her beautiful red sari. It had a cool beat and I felt like dancing, Indian style!
Kama Sutra = Beautiful Movie, Beautiful Music.......2005-06-27
Love the movie...cinematography is wonderful, a truely beautiful movie, everything is a feast for the eyes. The soundtrack is just as good, perfect blend of exotic music that can be enjoyed lounging around or even bellydanced to.
Captivating!!!!.......2003-09-05
The songs are sensual, calming, meditative and spiritual. If you appreciate different cultures, this album is for you. Whenever i play this album i turn all the lights out, and light candles, burn incense and meditate. I highly recommend this album with monsoon wedding soundtrack. Everyone i know loves this album. Get it.

Angèle Dubeau is a remarkable violinist, and here, she and her all-woman, 12-strong (including herself) group, La Pieta, tackle some of the showiest---and most interesting---virtuoso pieces composed or transposed for solo violin and strings, in various combinations, and occasionally featuring a piano. The violin tone at the start of Saint-Saens' Danse Macabre has a warmth which stays with us throughout the disc, despite the fact that so many of the pieces are razzle-dazzle. Hearing the delicious can-can from the overture to Orpheus in the Underworld so thrillingly played, with as much emphasis on the piano as the violin, is a treat, and the "Fire dance" from El amor brujo positively throbs. There's great skill---even daring---in the Tartini "Devil's Trill" sonata and a Boccherini Sonata, but the string tone never turns strident. And as a complete surprise, Dubeau and her group offer an arrangement of The Rolling Stones' "Paint it Black" which teases and riffs before getting into the melody, then plays it in the lower reaches of the instrument, and is then joined by the piano, allowing it to reach upwards and jazzily improvise---and then she throws in a moment or two of "Sympathy for the Devil" (!) before it concludes with the original melody. There are other joys on this CD as well---this is not your everyday violin bon-bon recital. It's all highly recommended. --Robert Levine
Album Description
This mischievious recital celebrates works inspired by the Devil: from Tartini's Devil's Trill, written after the composer dreamt that he had sold his soul to the Devil, to the infernal whirlwinds of Saint-Saën's Danse Macabre and Dompierre's Les Beautés du diable, composed specifically for La Pietà. It also pays homage to Paganini, the famed violinist who once confided to a friend that the Devil led him by the hand. This program shows an impish sense of humor as well... it features a unique arrangement of The Rolling Stones' Paint it Black and Sympathy for the Devil! Angèle Dubeau is one of Canada's most prominent recording artists. belonging to the exclusive group of Canadian classical soloists who can boast of having attained "gold" sales status. She is also the founder and director La Pietá. This CD is packaged with a bonus DVD featuring video clips and live concert excerpts.

FABULOUS!.......2007-02-15
I ADORE this CD. I first heard it on the local classical music station and my ears picked right up. "What IS that?" It was so alive, so vibrant. The station only plays it about once a year, but each time it catches my attention. "Ah, that's Angele Dubeau." The selections are a mix of new and old. Two of the new pieces are by Francois Dompierre; his "Le Diable matou" is one of my favorites. I play this CD over and over and over...
I disagree with the reviewer who said you must love violin music to enjoy this. I do enjoy the violin, but I think the CD's power and reach go far beyond violin lovers.
The CD also includes a DVD of concert excerpts.
Give this CD a try. I'm so glad I did.

The sound is tight and fresh. But take heed--only a person who love`s violin works would enjoy this c-d.And i would be one of those persons.ESP.Hot Women with violins!!!
Unique and pleasant........2006-12-23
It is refreshing to hear something new. The tracks are old favorites but the sound is new. Different. And in a good way.
Not the same old interpretations sped up or slowed down. But a genuine new groove down a familiar road.
She is a great violinist and has a knack for interplay with the rest of the band. It's not a flashy highly technical performance like you may expect from Perlman or Mutter. But not on the emotional ragged edge like Sonnenberg. But something in between with a new twist.
Emotional, Powerful, Fizzy.......2005-05-19
Long a stodgy devotee of baroque music, with the first few notes of this strong stuff I became an addict. Over and over again I play this CD, never quite anticipating the power and emotional bang of the music as it plays - even though I know the notes by now. If you ever studied Walter Piston's "harmony" the structures and transitions are back-of-the-book stuff, but the push is all elemental, basic, built-in, the familiar 1-4-5 with musical sequins, trampolines, backflips, and gelginite. Wow. And then some.
I'm so besotted, I had a couple of 13-year old boys (my son and a friend) listen to it in the car one day. They were bug-eyed after a couple of cuts, and not with horror. Now they ask for it, and yell with glee when the musical tension breaks over their heads in crashing chords.
Can I add a few more stars?
Infernal Violins.......2004-04-12
This music is fantastic. Because the violin she uses is a Stradovarius, the music pours like liquid velvet out of it. The choices of compositions are fantastic also. I think her interpretation of them along with the violin and her back-up group are what make this album so outstanding.

Tony Bavaar Award.......2005-01-01
According to IMDB.com, what Tony Bavaar won was the 1952 Theatre World Award for his work in Paint Your Wagon.
Enjoyable but somewhat neglected Lerner & Loewe score.......2004-03-02
Even though the show was not a huge hit on stage, the original cast recording helped popularize the songs and RCA has kept it in circulation without interruption since 1951.
The leads do not posess the most musical voices but they sound so right for the characters. The mens chorus gets to sing quite a bit and they sond properly robust. The recording has been laid out to include some bits of dialogue and these segments help give the disc some theatricality.
The CD transfer has very good sound and comes with good background notes and a detailed synopsis.
The boom for PAINT YOUR WAGON was the main problem which is why it has never been revived, but since the score contains such gems as "I Talk to the Trees"; "They Call the Wind Maria" and "Wand'rin' Star" it would seem an ideal candidate for Encores or some other group that specializes in concert stagings of forgotten shows.
Paint Your Wagon Score.......2003-12-03
I love the music in this film and just received my CD with the songs...it is great...received timely and nice listening and singing along pleasure...
A True "Gold Rush" Sound.......2002-10-09
Even if you own the video and 'track of the movie version of "PYW," you should get this CD of the original Broadway incarnation just for purposes of comparison. Several good songs that appear on it ("I'm On My Way," "What's Goin' On Here?," "How Can I Wait?," "In Between," "Carina Mia," "Another Autumn," "All For Him") were sacrificed to the necessities of the altered plot in the latter. There's also a nice liner pamphlet that tells the history of the play and gives a synopsis of the story.
The best thing about this music is that it really *sounds* as if it took place during the Days of '49. Olga San Juan (Jennifer Rumson) has a raw, country-sounding voice that's nevertheless flexible and true, and Tony Bavar as her lover Julio sounds smooth and sophisticated. There's banjo and guitar in the orchestrations as well as traditional accompaniment. And, like all good show music, it spans the spectrum from the wistful ("I Still See Elisa") to the humorous ("Hand Me Down That Can o'Beans," "In Between") to the thrilling (the classic "They Call the Wind Maria"). This is a show disc that deserves to be better known.
A forgotten gem, but a gem nonetheless.......2002-09-11
Although Lerner and Loewe's "Paint Your Wagon" will forever stand in the imposing shadows of the other L&L works, "Brigadoon," "My Fair Lady," "Gigi," and "Camelot," I can't understand why this one has just been left by the wayside. This recording is pretty generous, with 15 cuts. Although there were time restrictions (albums were still being released on 78RPM in 1951, in addition to LPs), Paint Your Wagon does not sound truncated or sped up by any means. Sound quality is generally excellent throughout, even though in monaural. Great cast, beautiful score, great sound, what can I say? A worthy addition to your L&L collection.

It only gets better.......2005-11-04
I've had this cd for about 7 years now and every now and then pull it out for a listen and each time I leave with a new song that I feel is the best and a need to search out a few cds from the artist who cover them . The last time was about a month ago and it hasn't been out of my car since. "You Can't Always Get What You Want"...brilliant. "Sway"...unforgettable. "Beast of Burdon"...outstanding. This last time has been "Ventilator Blues" by the late Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown.
I don't like to say that these guys did the Rolling Stones better than Mick and the gang, but on these songs...they did.
On the Cover of the Rolling Stones!.......2004-04-11
On this CD premier blues men like Luther Allison, Junior Wells, Johnny Copeland, Holmes Brothers and Taj Mahal cover some of the Best Rolling Stones Classics and adds it a twist of Blues. The first song on the CD seems to be the absolute best and the most refreshing - Luther Allisons version of the 1969 hit "You Can't Always Get What You Want". Sadly this version came to be Luthers Last studio recording ever, recorded short before his sudden death i 1997 - But truely at the Peak of his career.
An Overall great CD, worth buying for Luther Allison it self!
Umm....yeah!!!.......2003-11-01
Ok. Just think about this....
Stones? Blues? Rock 'n' Roll? What else do you need? Exactly, a nice beer and you are set. Enjoy this cd forever. It makes the blues and rock and country come together like never before. "You Can't Always Get What You Want" is simply the best rendition of any song that I have ever heard. Unfortunatly I only have enough money to buy 1 for a present or else I would buy a thousand to give to everyone. It's perfect. As a Music Educator, a Music Theorist, and a Composer, this is the finest CD that one could ever buy. Enjoy!
gots to have it.......2003-05-11
Some of the songs are done better than the originals (Sway, Moonlight Mile, Ventilator Blues). This cd is a must have for a Stones fan. Albert Collins? Johnny Copeland, Gatemouth Brown? It don't get no better! The Stones must have been truly flattered.
Dim bulbs please take note.......2002-06-03
This is just a note for all the Stones fans who don't get the blues, or even the Stones, for that matter. Love in Vain IS a blues song, written by Robert Johnson. The Stones covered it (briliantly I might add), but they didn't write it. And the artists on this album already have well developed styles of their own. Real artists take something from someone else and make it their own, exactly as the Stones did with blues tunes. The complaints below might sound more valid if they were also complaining that the Stones cover of Love in Vain didn't sound the way Robert Johnson did it.

Classic[al] Stones.......2007-07-10
As both a huge Rolling Stones fan and a lover of classical music, I have to say this is one of the most enjoyable and interesting discs I own. Here are 11 of the Stones' best songs, as you have never heard them before. This cd is certainly a tribute to the melodic and lyrical genius of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and crew, but the impeccable London Symphony Orchestra and guest vocalists transform these catchy rock tunes into incredibly haunting and powerful musical sagas. The versions of "Ruby Tuesday" and "As Tears Go By" are really amazing and even tragic. "Sympathy for the Devil" has an operatic feel to it. The child-like innocence of "Dandelion" is really quite entertaining. Considering the Stones were really a blues band at heart, one wouldn't think initially that their repertoire would translate well into a symphonic format. But it does. There is only one way to enjoy this rare musical treat-buy this cd now!
Best CD I own........2003-11-04
I've had this CD for what seems like a lifetime now, and I still can't put it away. By far the most timeless CD I own.
Classical classics.......2002-11-12
The lively levi clad rebel music of the Stones is traded in for high brow tuxedo's and an orchestral sound with mixed results. Through the years I've played this disc for a different rendering of the familiar rock anthems. As stated by another reviewer you must not compare because one is rock and one is a classical treatment of a rock song. The problem is that it is hard to seperate comparisons. Beginning with "Street Fighting Man" the Stones anthem that was banned because of the resulting violence it incited, the disc is a subdued and barely recognized shell of the original Richards and Jagger penned number. The translations work at times like the interesting versions of "Paint It Black"and the hauntingly beautifully dark "Symphony For the Devil" that sounds like a theme from play. For the most part the pure musical numbers are better than the others where vocals exist becuse of the inevitable vioce comparisons. An exception might be Marianne Fathfull's rendering of "Ruby Tuesday." Mick Jagger is featured on one song, "Angie," for a slightly different vocal interpretation that is slower and more dramatic. The London Symphony Orchestra produces a lush backdrop for the familiar songs associated with guitar and rock and roll. Taken alone it is a nice sampling of the Stones music but it is very hard to not make comparisons. They are two different genres and should be treated as such. Nonetheless I prefer the original versions but find these songs to be more soothing and sophisticated. As alternatives to the originals it sounds good but not great.
Excellent choice.......2002-08-27
If you enjoy Classical versions of rock music, this is one that you must get. I love it. They have excellent version of the songs. This album is THE album that turned me on with Classical version of Rock music.
Forget the original Stones stuff--just enjoy for itself.......1999-07-23
Interesting form of Stones music--definitely not for the Stones purist, but not bad if just taken as music to enjoy by itself.
