As the Man in Black celebrates his 70th birthday, he looks back on a career not only of legendary performances, but of remarkable songs that capture a bygone America, in vignettes of trains, rivers, rebels, street-corner shoeshine boys, and displaced lovers, moving on, never to return. To honor that contribution, now part of America's musical heritage, more than a dozen luminaries of country, rock, and folk--including Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, and Sheryl Crow--gather to interpret Cash's word portraits of the downtrodden and disenfranchised. Nearly every performance is a keeper, though some deliver a special thrill: Dylan introducing his rendition of "Train of Love" as a song he used to sing before he ever wrote songs himself; Little Richard turning "Get Rhythm" into even more of a rockabilly raver; and Cash's daughter, Rosanne, giving "I Still Miss Someone" a clean, sweet reading that underscores its poignant message. Yet it's Springsteen, in a cover of "Give My Love to Rose," who comes to own the project, laying bare the pain, hope, spirituality, love, and despair that Cash wove into the framework of almost all of his songs. An extraordinary set from, yes, kindred spirits all. --Alanna Nash
Customer Reviews:
Fabulous Tribute Album.......2006-08-01
I heard Emmylou Harris, Sheryl Crow and Mary Chapin Carpenter perform "Flesh and Blood" during a televised tribute to Johnny Cash. I became "obsessed" with finding this song. Unable to download the song any of the music services, I purchased the entire CD from Amazon. This is arguably one of the BEST tribute CDs I have ever heard. While maintaining the flavor of Johnny's music, each artist takes the song and makes it their own. This is not "Johnny Cash Karaoke." It is some of the best artists in country, pop, folk and blues honoring The Man In Black. Among my favorites (though I like all the songs) are Travis Tritts slow and emotional rendition of "I Walk the Line" and Dwight Yoakum's hillbilly rock on "Understand Your Man." I've never been a fan of Hank Williams, Jr. but LOVE his version of "Big River." I am thankful I wasn't able to just download "Flesh and Blood" or I would have missed what has become one of my absolute favorite CDs.
Little Richard Rocks!!!.......2006-07-07
This is a great album - a wonderful selection of Cash treasures and treasured artists, masterfully produced by Marty Stuart. He said he had to fight to get rock pioneer Little Richard into the studio. Well the fight was well worth it. Although Little Richard makes 'Get Rhythm' a rock 'n' roll track, it is a wonderful tribute to Cash as a songwriter. And if you like rock 'n' roll, this is the only track you'll be feeling. If you don't like to rock, then you may want to skip this track. But check it out, Little Richard hasn't missed a beat in over 50 years of recording!
What an Amazing Tribute to an Amazing Man.......2005-12-30
I saw the CMT Special on TV that was made when this album was being recorded and it was almost as good as the album. They interviewed the artists and Johnny & June Cash. Plus you see the artists sing their version of these songs live. Johnny Cash sure seemed to like them all. He said Keb' Mo's version of "Folsum Prison Blues" was great and he thought Travis Tritt's rendition of "I Walk The Line" was the best he ever heard. Seems to me he ought to know if anyone does and I must say I agree with Johnny. I love this album and every song on it. I also have them all sung by Johnny Cash, also GREAT. As to the whiners that complain about the different interpertations of these songs. Who would want to hear a Johnny Cash song sung by someone else if they were just trying to sound like Johnny Cash?(As if anyone could) Now that would suck! If you want to hear Johnny Cash singing Johhny Cash then buy a Johnny Cash album there are plenty out there and all of them are GREAT. Anyone who does not like the tracks on here dosen't know Jack about good music. This is a TRIBUTE to Johhny Cash by some of the best artists in country music singing the songs their way, making them their own and doing a great job of it. Oh by the way "Meet me in Heaven" is sung by Janette Carter, a member of the Carter Family who won many awards including a Grammy, not June Carter Cash Johnny's wife, with Johnny joining in. Janette's voice like Johnny's matured with the years. Take it for what it is a loving tribute to a Great Man. This album would be a bargin at twice the price.
This makes me feel good!.......2005-12-04
This is a great CD. I just found it by chance. Looking for Bruce Springsteen singles online, I found he participated in this CD. I have everything by Bruce, and I like Johnny Cash, so I bought it. I have to say that the first time I listened to it I already liked it. There is not one single song I do not like. The contributions by Bob Dylan (introducing the song saying "hi" to Johnny and thank him for being there for him when he needed him), Little Richard, Bruce Springsteen (also thanking Johnny), Charlie Robinson, Emmylou Harris with Sheryl Crow, Steve Earle, Marty Stuart (who produces the record), and Janette Carter with June Carter and Johnny Cash himself are all of them among my favorites. Being a so diverse collection of artists, one may like these or those better, but not buying this CD just because somebody wrote that "Keb' Mo' sucks", should not be an argument. Some may like Keb' Mo', some may not. What a big deal, anyway! I agree 100% with some reviews here, about the purpose of a tribute. You do not have to cover the song exactly as it was released by the artist, but trying to sing it in your own way, and this is mostly what this CD is all about (including Keb' Mo', of course). I am not giving it 5 stars, since it is not an essential CD (let's put it that way), but it really is a fantastic CD worth buying it. Now that there is the movie "Walk the Line" out there maybe a lot of people would like to give this CD a try. The booklet design is very good too, although lyrics are not included, but you can always find them online. Johnny Cash writes in the booklet his own review: "An interesting collection of some of the best people in our business paying tribute to me. Boy, does this make me feel good!"
A wonderful tribute to Johnny Cash!.......2005-02-05
With the names on this CD performing Johnny Cash music, I was sure it would be entertaining. This is excellent! From Bruce Springsteen's soft ballad "Give My Love to Rose" to the rousing style of Little Richard with "Get Rhythm".
The entire collection is just that....a tribute! Some people object to others covering Johnny's songs, but that's what a tribute is all about....covering the song... You may like it and you may not, regardless the tribute is refreshing. Yes, and I can still go back and listen to Johnny if I want to.
There has been discussion of Keb Mo changing the lyrics to "Folsom Prison Blues"...as he sings in a bluesy tune.. "they say I shot a man in Reno.. but that was just a lie." According to a quote from "The Tennessean" newspaper, after the line was changed and sung, Marty Stuart replied. "Let me tell you about that line you just changed. That's one of the most sacred lines in country music." Suprisingly, Stuart allowed the change.
One style I didn't care for is Travis Tritt's "I Walk the Line". True, he does it great! But since that has been my all time favorite country song since whenever, I just can't appreciate the soothing ballad he turned it into. Just my opinion.
All in all, this is an excellent tribute with fine performers. And, to cap off the entire CD, how great the 20 or 30 second instrumental of that famous guitar sound to "I Walk The Line." .....MzRizz

Great CD for Anne fans!!.......2007-04-14
I bought this CD to listen to at work because I NEED music when I'm working and this CD gets me focused and puts me in a great mood.
Some of the tracks are pretty short, but all are sweet.
If you love the music score in the Anne of Green Gables movies, you will love this CD.
Beautiful!.......2007-01-10
While I'm at work and listening, I'm transported to my cozy livingroom watching Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea. I can connect the song with every scene in the movie! It's fabulous!

Customer Reviews:
Polished and Accurate.......2007-07-23
This is again Bill Watrous, the consumate proffesional performing too a brilliant standard. What a good band to compliment this performance. Track 2 the soloist was a little overpowered by the band at the start.
Don't miss out on this latest B.W. release.
Keeping up his high standards.......2007-01-08
Trombonist Bill Watrous has distinguished himself as one of the top players in jazz since his emergence as a solo artist in the early 1970s. He seems equally comfortable in any size ensemble, from quartet to big band to full orchestra. This recent session, released in 2005, was with Gary Urwin's big band, and Watrous shares the spotlight with tenor saxophonist Pete Christlieb, another outstanding player. The CD is satisfying on all levels: solos, ensemble work, quality of arrangements, and choice of material. An excellent choice for anyone who enjoys contemporary big band jazz. A one-time gathering of artists like this makes one hope that, at least in the jazz idiom, the album format will not be replaced any time soon by exclusive use of one-track-at-a-time music purchases.
All Around Wonderful.......2006-10-11
Just a wonderful CD that shows how delightful a big band can be.
I love the choice of songs, Danny Boy, Girl Talk, My Foolish Heart. And I will listen to (and usually love) anything with Bill Watrous. It may be a chiche to say someone sings on his instrument, but Watrous does.
Liner notes ignored a wonderful point on the last track, "I'll Be Seeing You". Pete Christlieb, as noted, was in Doc Severinsen's Tonight Show band for many years.
It was common knowledge that Johnny Carson's two favorite songs were "Here's That Rainy Day" and "I'll Be Seeing You". If this was a tribute to Pete's old boss, they did a great job on it.
No More Blues - 4.5 stars .......2006-04-24
That tune is not the title of the CD, but certainly could have been. For if you happen to be feeling the blues a bit these days, one listen to this fine big band recording will help to blow your blues away with power. The talented arranger Gary Urwin has an uncanny ability, like Bill Holman, to write arrangements that swing quite naturally and uplift the listener's spirits. Urwin's arrangements never lose sight of the tune's basic structure and never go too far out. Yet they also manage to avoid the obvious, and while instruments such as harp and English horn might be the kiss-of-death for many jazz arrangements, they are welcome additions on several tracks and never detract from the straight-ahead jazz feeling of the CD.
For "Kindred Spirits" Urwin had the idea to write arrangements for an all-star L.A. big band and to feature two soloists added especially for this occasion - superstar trombonist Bill Watrous and the powerful and distinctive tenor player Peter Christlieb. Watrous and Christlieb weave in and out of every arrangement making impressive and often moving solo statements and showing why they are among the finest soloists in jazz today. Watrous is featured on "Chinatown" and leads the `bones and solos on "Danny Boy". Christlieb's solo features are "Foolish Heart" and "My Ship." Other soloists in this excellent band include trumpeters Bobby Shew and Wayne Bergeron, and pianist Christian Jacob.
Every track here has much to recommend it, but some of the highlights include the swinging "Lester Leaps In"; the hard-driving "Beautiful Love"; a surprisingly up-tempo "Girl Talk"; an inventive arrangement of Miles' Davis' "E.S.P" with many intriguing voicings; the multi-tempoed "My Foolish Heart"; and the bluesy title piece.
The CD is marred only slightly by a somewhat unnatural, studio-bound recording quality. But otherwise "Kindred Spirits" is a swinging and very enjoyable big-band CD, and warmly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
A Soothing And Romantic Instrumental.......2005-04-28
The talented and creative Bradley Powell is the Candlelight Guitarist. His music is original and some of the most soul soothing I have ever heard. "Soul Mates and Kindred Spirits" is his second CD and is sure to receive the same warm reception as his first, "Music For Rest And Renewal." The original release had Mr. Powell playing solo on the acoustic guitar, accompanied by sounds from nature, including the ocean, birds, rainfall, a stream and waterfall, fireside and night sounds. This latest offering has more of a contemporary, romantic, smooth jazz sound, which is good, although I'm a nature person myself. I live in NYC and am really deprived of natural white noise.
Other musicians join Powell on the 16 new tracks offered here, adding a fuller instrumental sound to the mix. A few of my favorites include, "Gift of the Heart," backed by strings, as well as some of the sounds of nature I am so taken with. "Wild Ponies," with its percussion rhythm, is a track I particularly enjoy, as well as many of the cuts with flute accompaniment.
I often come home from work stressed-out to the max, put this CD on and after a while the tension just flows away to the strains of this easy-on-the-ears music. A perfect instrumental album to play during a cozy dinner for two, or on a rainy Sunday afternoon - just the right sound for kicking back and relaxing. Accompanying Powell here are kindred spirits, Joey Cataldo on drums; Perez D'Agostino, percussion; Gilberto Hildavio, alto, soprano and bass flutes, English horn, clarinets; Mark Massey, Rhodes piano (on cuts 3, 12, 14); Darius Channing, keyboards; Mark Adams, French horn; and David Siebels, conductor on tracks 2, 8, 16.
The artist features a quotation on his Website, by Ralph Waldo Emerson, which is extremely appropriate to the music he makes, "Never lose an opportunity of seeing anything that is beautiful; for beauty is God's handwriting -- a wayside sacrament. Welcome it in every fair face, in every fair sky, in every fair flower, and thank God for it as a cup of blessing." - Ralph Waldo Emerson
I highly recommend "Soul Mates and Kindred Spirits." It has quiet soul and is good for the heart.

A Place Where the Heart Finds Joy........2005-03-29
In 2001, Bradley Powell released a CD entitled "Music for Rest and Renewal" under the name The Candlelight Guitarist: stirred by that September's events, and as his contribution to the healing process that followed and that is still ongoing. Three years later, he returned with "Soul Mates & Kindred Spirits;" like the 2001 album a collection of gentle guitar melodies, but this time adding not only nature sounds, flutes and oboes but also other instruments, such as string bass, drums and percussion, keyboards, and French horn.
Powell picked up his first guitar at age ten and later had the opportunity to study, inter alia, with jazz guitarist Joe Pass, Dr. Ronald Purcell (including one master class taught by Andres Segovia), and David Rose of "Little House on the Prairie" fame. It is that latter influence, and his work with studio composer Mike Post, that shines through here more than on "Music for Rest and Renewal:" Whereas on his first CD, his guitars are soothing voices speaking to all those looking for a few moments of peace and quiet, many of the pieces on "Soul Mates and Kindred Spirits" indicate a composer visualizing his topics as well as hearing them: There are those little horses' fast hooves in "Wild Ponies," there is the multi-voiced interaction of a group of friends in "The Buddy System," as well as the progress, but also the harmony of the seasons in "Summer, Winter, Spring and Fall," you do see those "Two Pairs of Old Soft Shoes" sauntering and gallivanting about, and you can picture some of those Soul Mates "Giving [each other] Wings" to help each other fly, as the closing piece's subtitle suggests. Most of the pieces are upbeat and, generally, faster than those on "Music for Rest and Renewal," but there are also a few slower, reflective tracks reminiscent of the first CD's general mood (e.g. "Gift of the Heart," "Listening," "Forgive, Forget," and "Just Being There"). Powell's fingerstyle technique is clear and a particular joy to listen to on the pieces that, like the better part of his first CD, put his guitars front and center: "Listening," "Forgive, Forget," "In the Moment" (inspired, as the subtitle suggests, by the astronomical snapshot of Earth and Mars at 2:51 AM during the night of August 27, 2003; and thus again reflecting a visual stimulation), as well as "Just Being There" and "Air for Soul Mates."
Contacted by email, Mr. Powell was reluctant to give specifics as to the types of guitars and strings used in the recording, but kindly confirmed that most of the pieces are played in standard tuning, with the guitar tuned down to D for only one track ("You Inspire Me"). He also mentioned the place that both guitars featured on this CD have in his life: one, his everyday companion; the other, a guitar that has been in his possession since college and has been fine-tuned by the hands of luthier Jose Oribe.
With his music, Bradley Powell wants to take you to a place "where tension is cast off, simplicity is embraced, the physical body is most relaxed, and the inner spirit is lifted up," he writes on his website; and he continues: "You don't really *think* in this place (does a bird *think* about flying?) ... you fully participate in the moment. It's a peaceful place, where the heart finds joy." In that, Powell succeeds admirably.
Gorgeous music.......2005-02-07
Have you ever had one of those days? You wake up on the wrong side of the bed. You stub your toe getting out of bed. You burn your toast. Miss the bus. Late in to work and the boss yells at you. You miss a deadline, you miss lunch, and then you miss the bus again. You pay an exorbitant fee for a taxi home, and when you get there you find that there's nothing for dinner. Well,...you're not alone. That is when you need a Soul Mate & Kindred Spirit. Pop this cd into your stereo and let these gorgeous sounds relax and restore you. The only thing it cannot do is stop the grumbling in your belly...so go get some food. Food and this cd...YEP...you'll go to bed feeling restored...guaranteed. :)
Plays the Guitar Like a Man In Love.......2005-01-29
Bradley Powell, playing as the `Candelight Guitarist' has composed a lovely and enjoyable CD in SOUL MATES & KINDRED SPIRITS that one can at once sense his affinity for the instrument as he loves, caresses and plays it as one would their lover. He plays it moodily, playfully and imbues his audience with both a sense of peace (tracks Kindred Spirits, Giving Wings) and playfulness (Two Pairs of Old Soft Shoes) along with plenty of other tracks that were also wonderfully produced and played.
I found this to be a sensitive and very relaxing CD that would be a perfect companion on a long drive or just kicking back with your significant other or a fabulous book! AND not to make light of the music but I not only found the music delightful but I thought that the original cover art of the album was also most excellent and right in tune with the tunes!
A relaxing instrumental album with an upbeat feel.......2005-01-28
Candlelight Guitarist Bradley Powell does a nice job of combining his soothing guitar melodies with other instruments--including bass, drums, flutes, woodwinds, horns, piano, and keyboards--as well as some soft ocean sounds. The result is a sort-of upbeat, pleasant background soundtrack which works well to set a relaxing mood at home, work, or in the car. Personally, I favor Powell's previous album, Music for Rest & Renewal, which I found to be a bit simplier: soft and slower with less instruments and more nature. However, those who prefer their instrumental music to be a bit more lively are likely to enjoy this CD.

Album Description
A champion in a rising generation of Scottish fiddlers, Bonnie is called "the piping fiddler" for her evocative renditions of Highland bagpipe music. Here she returns to her roots in a celebration of the women of Scotland. With ancient Gaelic airs, strathspeys and reels of today's Scotland, performed on Scottish fiddle & viola with Highland bagpipe, uilleann pipes, wire-strung Celtic harp, guitar, cittern, cello, bodhran, snare & bass drum. Praised by the Washington Post who said,""Both a classically-trained violinist and three-time US National Fiddle Champion, Rideout uses these twin disciplines to combine an impeccable sense of intonation, timbre and phrasing with the imagination to spin variations on repeating folk themes...She has used these linked skills to tackle not only the fiddle tradition of Scottish music but the pipe tradition as well...She forgoes the heated flamboyance of popular fiddlers in favor of a cooler, more meditative approach...Rideout brings the elegant severity of chamber music to the repertoire, eschewing frilly embellishments for strong, clean lines."

Richly expressive.......1999-05-01
I can't put this album on and just let it play because there are some tracks on it that I actively dislike. But ones I like are so very good that I nevertheless consider this a five-star CD. Bonnie Rideout is perhaps the leading exponent of the Scottish fiddle tradition these days, with five albums published in the last five years. She does not import ideas from other genres. Yet she succeeds (sometimes) against the biggest challenge in the tradition - she makes it sound fresh.
Rich Celtic Tapestry.......1998-05-28
This CD departs from some of the traditional approaches of reel and jig sets. Tunes blend into one another and instrument voices spiral around central themes - There are many emotions and perspectives on this recording, from the joyous assertions of life's energy to somewhat sad introspection. Bonnie Rideout weaves a collection of simple tunes related to Scottish Women into a very rich tapestry of living music.

Music and Medicine... what a way to heal!!!.......2001-08-09
I heard some of the cuts on this CD over a year ago in the home of a friend..I had no idea it was my host singing and performing. It was truly amazing.
They say music heals the soul. This is an RX that anyone who has a broken heart, lost a loved one or just in need of some uplifting should certain get filled.
Doc...you are a gifted individual and a wonderful human being! Not only do you have the ability to heal medically, but spiritually as well. I have often heard that drummers are very passionate individuals and I know that to be true firsthand. However, the passion from which this CD was born, certainly makes you a "kindred spirit" in kind.
I look forward to more...... Congrats!!! A grammy in the making!
Kindred Spirits ~Doc City.......2001-06-07
This CD is simply fantastic. Seldom does one find a CD where all of the selections are excellent. There is an outstanding mixture of music that should appeal to all music lovers. I purchased the CD and have found myself playing it over and over again while driving to and from work. When I get home, I take the CD in the house to play in the evening. I'm now ordering a second one because occasionally I will walk out and forget to put it back in the car or my wife and children want to listen to it or share it with their friends during the day. I'm looking forward to the next release from this artist.
Really good sounds.......2001-05-12
I love this CD - including its intriguing artwork on the packaging and the story behind each song. Seldom do I find that I enjoy every track on a CD, but I do in this case. It has sounds of jazz, R&B, Pop, and blues on the same CD. It's music for different ages. I'm in my 50's, and my kids and their friends who are twentyish enjoy the CD, as well. I love the theme of living in joy, love, peace and harmony("Meskerem"); the message in "Ego You" and "Be There for You" and "No Goodbye." I love the cello and saxophone addition to the beautifully haunting and spiritual vocals in "Be There for You." I love the romantic Nancy Wilson sound of "Come Love Me," and the great instrumental sounds in "1257" and "Creaking." Kindred Spirits has brought me endless listening pleasure - a great CD!
All Day Play.......2001-05-03
Every once in a while, I come across a CD that's so mellow, I find myself unconsciously pushing the repeat button on my stereo. "Kindred Spirits" is one. A stirring compilation of provoking lyrics and rhythmic arrangements that reaches beyond traditional categories to embrace an interesting mix of each, speaking to the universal connectivity of music. Showcasing some outstanding artists based in northeast Ohio whose talents, energy and enthusiasm is individually distinct on this innovative project.
