John Williams' lovely and moving score for the sixth Star Wars film brings thirty years of collaborating on George Lucas' beyond-popular intergalactic franchise to a close. (Is this really the end of Star Wars? Can't Lucas and Williams work together on a prequel to these prequels? Let us hope so, and that Jar Jar Binks is nowhere near it.) As this music accompanies the most exciting Star Wars film in many a moon, the soundtrack itself is more fun, more evil, more nasty and bumpy. Many of the heroic, anthemic themes woven throughout Episode Three: Revenge of the Sith will necessarily be familiar to any fan of the series, from the "Imperial March" to the main theme. It's remarkable how stirring the latter can be, no matter how many times you've heard it, and even for those who do not have all their money invested in S.W. memorabilia. There is a lot of new music here, and the lush, extensive range of both Williams and the London Symphony Orchestra is on display, most notably in the menacing, percolating "General Grievous" and the rousing "New Hope" end theme. --Mike McGonigal

The bonus dvd with this soundtrack was the reason I purchased. I enjoy film soundtracks, and science fiction, but this dvd was a real highlight for me. I got the soundtrack cd out of the local library. The cd was missing from the case, but I found this wonderful dvd instead that I went out to purchase later.

With optional segments of dialog from Ian McDiarmid, this film is a stunning visual and musical overview of the full epic story of episodes I-VI of Star Wars. For those of us who felt that eps. IV-VI fell short of our expectations, this film presents them well as parts of the whole story. The Musical Journey also stands as a summary of the entire SW opus for someone who is not familiar with the Star Wars characters and plot. Highly recommended.

The Episode III soundtrack is very good. Not great, but very, very good. You can tell that Williams is getting old, but he still manages to weave together a very memorable score.

My favorite tracks are "Battle of the Heroes," "Anakin's Betrayal," Palpatine's teachings, "Anakin vs. Obi-Wan," and the "Immolation Scene."
The others are very good as well, but these are especially nice. "Battle of the Heroes" is Dual of the Fates for Revenge of the Sith. "Anakin's Betrayal" is a very sad track that is, in my opinion, one of William's most powerful pieces. "Palpatine's Teachings" is really, really neat. It's very dark and moody, a perfect piece for the evil emperor. The only weird thing is the end. "Anakin vs. Obi-Wan" is the action piece that plays during the battles of Anakin and Obi-Wan, and Yoda and the Emperor. Finally, "The Immolation Scene" is another sad piece, even more so than "Anakin's Betrayal."

Although I really like this CD, there are some things that are missing (as usual). First, the whole sequence where the droids are looking for Obi-Wan after he was shot. You see Obi-Wan in his ship with Senator Organa on the Hologram (or whatever it is), and Obi-Wan says that his clones turned on him. That was some pretty awesome music that OF COURSE was left out of the CD. Then there was Dual of the Fates in the movie, but completely absent from the CD. And probably the most annoying was that whole piece of music before Obi-Wan and Anakin fight. It was so touching and sad and I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY LEFT IT OUT! Absolutely amazing. Also, did anyone notice that some little bits were cut out? For example, in Anakin vs. Obi Wan, they cut out about a second or two of choir. What?! What the heck is with that? It's when Anakin is running on the long thing and jumps on the droid on the lava. Also, there was some pretty cool drumming when you see Yoda and the Emperor fighting, and you can see the whole stadium (the big room). There's also drumming in "Enter Lord Vader" that is muted in the soundtrack.

Oh well...if I'm going to collect movie scores, I'm going to have to get used to the fact that in almost all cases there's not going to be every bit of music. I've experienced this in both Pirates of the Caribbean, Jurassic Park I (there was very little left out on this score), and almost everything else. At the moment, I'm just waiting for the 22nd, for the Pirates of the Caribbean 3 soundtrack. It's gonna be amazing.

John Williams' finest work.......2007-04-20

There is little more I can say that hasn't already been said about the soundtrack to Episode 3, especially what Amazon contributor Dan Mohr wrote in his review of the soundtrack on 2/2/2006. His review captured almost all the thoughts, feelings, and emotions I had when I first listened to the soundtrack, and was, IMO, the best review of John Williams' greatest masterpiece.

Having said that, I will say that few soundtracks have ever so perfectly captured the underlying emotional currents of their respective movie; in the case of ROTS, the contemporaneous tragedies of Anakin's fall to the Dark Side, the extermination of the Jedi, and the rise of the oppressive Empire. The listener is confronted with the depth and totality of the evil that has beset the entire galaxy to a degree that the film could not reach in only 2 hours.

Bravo, Dan Mohr, and BRAVO John Williams!

A Great Conclusion to the Prequel Trilogy.......2007-04-07

This is a great work of art. I rank it 4th among Star Wars soundtracks after A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and The Phantom Menace. I had a hard deciding which I thought was better, The Phantom Meance or Revenge of the Sith, but I decided that The Phantom Menace lays the foundation for so much that is in this soundtrack and is thus the more masterful work. But that doesn't mean that this score still isn't great. Every piece is a thrill to listen to and pace never lets up. "Battle of the Hereos" is an amazing piece and the rendition of the "Funeral Theme" from Episoded I captures the film's tragety magnificently. Also I do not think John Williams could have portrayed the Jedi's extinction more perfectly than he did in "Anakin's Betrayal". This is without a doubt the best score of 2005 and one of the best of the decade.

Williams is slumming it.......2007-04-01

Williams's score for Revenge of the Sith is almost entirely overbearing, lacking any emotional subtlety. The music is overcomplicated and even a bit confusing, especially in the tracks that correspond to action sequences in the movie. His overuse of choral tracks and vocals is too bombastic and irritating to be listened to without the explosions and laser blasts of the soundtrack to soften them. (Yes, this music is actually softened by the sounds of warfare.) Worst of all, much of the music has simply been lifted from earlier scores. At times his self-imitation was so blatant that I actually wondered whether the editor who had complied this score had made a mistake and I was listening to The Empire Strikes Back or A New Hope. Also suffers from not including the entire score, in some cases cutting out musical segues in obvious and awkward ways.

Finland's His Infernal Majesty (H.I.M.) has managed to release a solid, if not wholly overwhelming album. Listening to vocalist Ville Valo work his magic on the title tune, where he bridges the distance between Bono and Bowie, you almost believe you're listening to one of the great voices, maybe even great bands, of the age. The sharp, hook-laden tunes such as "Killing Loneliness," "Vampire Heart" and "Rip Out The Wings Of A Butterfly" only seem to confirm that initial spark of discovery. However, the brilliance evident at the beginning barely stretches to the halfway mark. "The Face Of God" and "Drunk On Shadows" are little more than hooks around which other things happen rather than the promising, fully realized material found at the album's start. this album is just different from the other albums. It is a transition that they wanted to do before making a heavy album like VENUS DOOM that is gonna be out in a coupple of months. HIM is one of the best rock bands out there...just go and buy all the cds!!!

Great record..........2007-04-16

Since HIM's incarnation, the band has released five studio album and countless singles, along with one greatest hits compilation and one album full of acoustic songs and remixes. However, up until the release of Dark Light, HIM was virtually unknown to the states, and when this record was released, it marked a new era for HIM and their stateside fans.
Since this was the first HIM record to be released in the states, new fans had this album, and only this album, to give them their daily dosage. However, long time fans of the band, from Finland and even some here in the states, threw the sell out label at HIM. Why?
Most people think it's because Ville Valo (vocals) cut his hair. His hair was short during the Razorblade Romance era, too.
Anyways, the album starts off with a bang with Vampire Heart. The chorus to this song is infectious, and the guitar riff and bass/drum collaboration work in perfect succession with one another, and of course the keyboard help to lend atmosphere to the mood of the song (and album) as a whole. Next up is the albums first single, Rip Out The Wings Of A Butterfly. The intro is catchy and is just a teaser for the chorus this is to follow. Under the Rose is a more mediocre track, not a bad one but not as catchy as its predecessors. Killing Loneliness is a moody Gothic anthem with a killer chorus and some great keyboard work. Dark Light is a beautiful song with great falsetto from Ville, and Behind The Crimson Door, followed by the astounding The Face Of God, are worth the price of admission alone. The last few tracks seem to lack the punch of the others but they're still good songs and can hold their own.
This album is amazing, and while fans of the band say it is sellout, I personally feel this to be some of the heaviest stuff the band had released yet. Sure, Vampire Heart is no Razorblade Kiss, but Razorblade Romance was six or seven years ago- let the band evolve.

More "light" than "dark"........2007-03-18

Dark Light is the album that is making me lose all respect and hope for this band. A huge let-down compared to the amount of time invested in it.

Let us begin with the positive aspects of the album. "Vampire Heart", the opening song, is a great opener that manages to raise your hopes for this one, and you can hear Valo's old vocal style at the end. "Under the Rose" is a great song that manages to carry one away also. The other hookers are... there aren't any... well, except for "Behind the Crimson Door" and parts of "Face of God".

Now, unto the weaknesses. Valo's new vocals, now that we know he chose to switch to, are still aggravating and could have been SO MUCH better, but then average at mediocre. "Wings of a Butterfly" is a good song, but it became so overrated that, it bores the living hell out of me, and its mood in the chorus is entirely different than the overall "let's rock" mood of the song. Another problem is the lack of atmosphere and the "cheerful", pop-ish direction some other songs have taken. You can sense a great potential in this album, which, if it had been left SIMPLER, would have turned into an actuality. As of now, the "let's push this riff a little more" approach results in catastrophe. The song "Dark Light" should be removed from the album, it is THAT bad. "Killing Loneliness" was blown out of proportion, as there are two better songs than that. Valo's way of putting out the chorus of "Face of God" is another example of this album's overall attitude of pushing things further than they are supposed to go.

Not a total failure, but could exist as a perfect EP rather than a mediocre-at-best LP. I wouldn't recommend it for non-HIM-fans, and the fans should consider themselves warned before jumping the gun on this one.

This band is named HIM not H.I.M

It doesn't stand for His Infernal Majesty, that's just there old name. Of course it hand an influence on their name, but Ville has said that one of the reasons they changed to HIM is because it was easy to pronounce in many languages, and His Infernal Majesty was getting them too many accusations on what there band's genre was, giving a false inpression.

The Best Covenant Album.......2007-07-15

Después de su marcada tendencia EBM, especialmente en sus primeras producciones como "Dreams of a Cryotank" y "Europa", Covenant nos ofrece su mejor trabajo hasta la fecha con temas al estilo del mejor Depeche Mode como "Bullet" y "We Stand Alone", sin dejar de lado el aire EBM de sus inicios, lo que lo convierte en uno de los mejores exponentes del synth pop en la actualidad. Yo le daría 4 estrellas y media, pero no se puede.

Northern Lights - Covenant album - best money spent ever.......2007-05-13

I loved this album. The best song in my opininon on the album is Bullet - great lyrics - followed by Call the Ships to Port. Great money, well worth waiting for it to arrive via import.

If you love this type of album then I'd also suggest VNV Nation and Apotygma Berzerk - particularly Kathy's Song (VNV Nation remix).

Outstanding words, sleepy music.......2007-01-03

Lyrically, it's a five star peace, but the pacing is a little bit slow for someone used the adrenaline-rush techno pace of Front 242 or Prodigy.

The best Covenant album to date for me .......2006-12-02

I listened to 'Northern Light' and was instantly impressed. 4 of the best Covenant songs feature on this album and they are 'Call The Ships to Port', 'Bullet', 'We Stand Alone' and 'We Want Revolution'. Not only do these songs have great lyrics and are sung greatly but they have a great dance to beat, techno and trance easy. The first song 'Monochrome' begins slow and slowly through the song, the beat builds in intensity and tone reaching a chorus. Released in 2002, 'Northern Light' gained Covenant more fanbase around the globe.

Two other promising songs that were experimental were 'Invisible&Silent' and 'Rising Sun'. Basically there is no bad song on this album. I have read previous reviewers and cannot understand some of the bad reviews levelled on this album. This was the first album, the talented trio signed with and many fans saw this has a traitorous move against the deep seated independent roots. Alas, Covenant have remained true to their beginnings and have only modernised their unique music sound that is changing with the times.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this album and this CD has become a popular listening CD for me and my friends. Well worth the purchase for any devout Covenant fan to add to his or her collection.

Numan Excels Live.......2006-06-24

Gary's had many ups and downs in his career. Yet, through it all, his live albums tend to serve him well. This might be one of the best. Sound is very clear, the performance is solid with just enough loose and raw ambience to give it edge. The set list is really what makes this stand out though. This was recorded on the 'Sacrifice' tour, so that album is well represented. What recommends this, however, is focus on tracks that are rarely heard live. "Cars" and "Metal" are absent from this set. Instead you get b-sides, Tubeway Army and Numa tracks like 'Noise, Noise', 'Stormtrooper in Drag', 'The Hunter', 'Jo the Waiter' and 'I'm and Agent'.

LIVE,HEAVY AND DARK !!!!!!!!.......2006-04-04

Man what a return to form for the electric pioneer Gary Numan ! This live record is a milestone.Recorded during the Sacrifice tour,it features like 80% of that record played live and rabid.The tracklist is absolutely out of the ordinary including the most sombre songs of GN's career,with an emphasis on non-album singles and the earliest of songs (The Plan lp) performed in the new industrial style.Despite of the continuous volume variations,this is the most bottom-heavy cd I've ever owned ( kept clipping my amp's protection circuitry) and the midrange is a bit subdued but it's as good as live records get.The set transpires agression,drummer Beasley makes some of his trademark mistakes here and there and guitarrist Kipper is totally out of place with his Stevestevenesque style and soloing (but I like them both anyway)
At 110'this is very generous 2 cd set.Get it or rot !!!!!

I really like this live recording from 1994. The tracklisting features a good balance between his industrial Sacrifice stuff(which I love the drumming by Richard Beasley)and a bunch of old songs basically from Tubeway Army, Replicas and Telekon. Cars and other great numbers from The Pleasure Principle are absent here (I guess he became tired of them after 15 years!) but it can't bring this great concert under 5 stars. Favorite tracks : Question of Faith, Noise Noise, Listen to the Sirens, Stormtrooper in Drag, The Hunter, Are Friend's Electric, I'm an Agent... Great stuff!

The overall sound is pretty beefy when compared to his old studio stuff. I like it! His band is tight and professional, truly first class. I guess the audience at the Labatt Hammersmith Apollo had a great time that night!

Finally, a really good live album and an appropriated way to discover Numan. Go with The Pleasure Principle along with this one for a good view of the classic Numan stuff. And get away from his work between 1985 and 1992 if you like Dark Light! 5/5

Numan Shines LIVE!.......1999-09-22

Gary Numan's music is great, but hearing him live - it's magic. This album is from Gary's 1995 "Sacrifice" Tour. "Sacrifice" ranks among fans as Gary's return to musical form - the songs are powerful, thought provoking and inspired. Hearing this material live is a real treat. Standout songs from the "Sacrifice" tracks like "Bleed" and "Magic" were made to be played live. Other treats are the older songs like "I Die, You Die," "Are Friends Electric," the ever present "Cars" and a great rendition of "Jo the Waiter". This is a great album to introduce people to Gary's music.

Live performances have always been Numans strong point and he has always paid equal attention to both light and sound. It is for this very reason that his live audio recordings stand up by themselves! This is somewhat of a retrospective set managing to please and excite fans from all eras of his career. From the very first notes, the tension is created, then smoothly maintained right through to the finale. See him live...but if you cant then buy this cd, close your eyes, and imagine youre there! Its well worth the trip!!

The legend returns: Metal Church are scheduled to release their latest album, A Light In The Dark, reanimating the zeitgeist of their first two releases, Metal Church (1985) and The Dark (1986). "It's almost precisely twenty years ago that we shook up the international metal scene for the first time with those two recordings," recalls guitarist Kurdt Vanderhoof. "Just the right moment to bring that era to mind with a brand new album and the same sort of energy that we had back then". The current band line-up consists of Kurdt Vanderhoof (guitar), Ronny Munroe (vocals), Jay Reynolds (guitar), Steve Unger (bass) and new addition Jeff Plate (drums; ex-Savatage). "I've known Jeff since my solo tour with Savatage," Vanderhoof recalls. "And during the 2005 Metal Church tour, when he drummed with opening act Chris Caffery's band, we also got on really well. So it suggested itself to ask him whether he wanted to join Metal Church". Vanderhoof, who doubles as sound engineer and producer during the recordings, promises an offering featuring all the important trademarks of typical Metal Church tracks, including a new version of the classic We Watch The Children Pray as a tribute to vocalist David Wayne, who passed away in May 2005. "A Light In The Dark will represent what the name Metal Church has been standing for the last twenty years."

The only reason I bought this album was because I could get it new for $11 and decided that was worth the risk. I have every MC album except for "Weight of the World". The self titled album is great and "The Dark" and "Blessing" were pretty good. The "Human Factor" had great music on some tracks and forgetable music on others. I didn't like how prominent Mike Howe was on that one. Everything after was okay at best.

Metal Church lives on. That is good news because they are one of the few bands that played consistent no frills heavy metal (more from a late 70s, early 80s Hard Rock perspective). It's tough to describe the MC sound, but it is somewhere between Deep Purple, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Motorhead, and Saxon. The band has always been under Kurt Vanderhoofs direction and guidance. For this reason they remained relatively consistent despite internal struggles.

Every thing about this album exceeded my expectations. The riffs are great, solos are good, really catchy, the drumming is good and not overbearing, and I love Ronny Munroe's vocals. I get the feeling by reading some of the other reviews, people hate Munroe and like Wayne and Howe better. I loved Wayne (especially in Reverend) but didn't like Howe that much. Munroe's vocals are great. The range is pretty varied and they're high but still forceful.

If you're looking for that classic traditional heavy metal release as of late...here it is.

Excellent stuff. The current line up isn't as good as the original one but they are still very good. A Light In The Dark is a good solid metal album.

Stunning return to form........2006-10-22

I've always been a fan of Metal Church, since hearing tracks from 'The Dark' played on the radio 20 or so years ago. I really like this album, they have retained the Metal Church signature sound despite the fact that Kurdt Vanderhoof is the only original member left in the band.
This is a collection of great songs that deserves to be successful, and its a nice touch to re-record Let The Children Pray as a tribute to David Wayne.
I also like the production on this CD. Like a previous reviewer I have also 'dumped' $10k or so on my sound system, but I don't have a problem with the production at all.
I thoroughly recommend this album to anyone who likes heavy metal, as in heavy metal, not emo, etc.

As one of the leaders of an exciting new generation of countertenors, Brian Asawa benefits not only from his distinctive voice, but also from his record label's publicity machine, which has made his name and his first two recordings strongly recognized by critics and listeners. Asawa's success at the Metropolitan Opera Auditions in 1991 and his many opera performances in the United States and abroad certainly haven't hurt his career. The voice we hear is unquestionably pretty and technically refined, but its throaty, dark timbre sounds more like the efforts of a man trying to sound like a woman. He just doesn't have that uniquely male countertenor quality exemplified by three of Asawa's more engaging colleagues--Andreas Scholl, David Daniels, and Daniel Taylor. That's not to say that these performances of some of the 16th century's loveliest songs are not eminently listenable and occasionally sublime. Asawa's agile voice projects a strong character coupled with an effortless delivery that will appeal to many listeners. He has an annoying habit, however, of singing slightly behind the beat and gradually leaning into longer-held notes. --David Vernier

I've really tried to like Brian Osawa but when I hear this CD, it sounds to me like he's faking his way through the songs, though I doubt he in fact is. It's passionless.Thankfully I bought this CD used for only $9.99 CDN. Regretably, I will likely be selling it back to the used CD store from which it came. Daniel Taylor and James Bowman's Love Bade me Welcome would be a much better selection, i bought it new and its worth every cent!

Sorry, but this self-involved, primping prissy, gen-x "amerrican" version of lute song is a far cry from what I would have hoped to have heard from this supposed "promising" artist. The only promise we can hope for is that he stops inflicting this pap on us. If this is the future of opera, get me outta here.

Pretty voice sings pretty songs, but it's pretty mediocre..........1999-07-04

This album of 16th century songs was VERY highly recommended to me by a store clerk at my local music retailer. I did not preview the album before buying it, but was intrigued by the seeming popular nature of the albums production and promotion. As a 20th centuruy composer and performer, I have dealt extensively with the human voice, in all it's many guises and forms. Asawa's voice has a sweet and fairly clean alto character, but the desired strenth and passion of the counter tenor labeling is obviously lacking. I do not doubt that future albums, perhaps featuring a more complex instrumentation and format will show that Mr. Asawa's voice can be something more than a young alto with an overindulgent rubato complex. The album is not the worst I have heard utilizing "non-traditional" male voices, but the clarity of line and sensitivity needed to convey emotion in these songs is something that perhaps is better left to a more tenured voice. I am ooking forward to seeing what the future brings us from Mr. Asawa, but I do hope he will be braver with the timbres and colors in his voice. It is truly a shame not to let the emotive quality of the counter tenor voice lead the way over "technical" purity.

When you start the CD and sit back you will literally think you have died and gone to heaven! Brian Asawa is heaven on Earth!

If you have not heard anything from Brian, you are in for an extraordinary treat. Brian's voice is an incredible gift that every person should be exposed to. "The Dark is My Delight" is a wonderful display of Brian's range and vocal gifts. A collection of mostly 14th Century lute songs, it is a perfect subject for Brian's unique voice. "Come Again, Sweet Love" is a perfect opening song as it gives you his full range and style. In the beginning you cannot believe that this sweet, melodious voice can be coming from a human, muchless a male. You'll be thinking that throughout this wonderful CD.

There are few CDs that are so extraordinary but then again this is Brian's first CD. EVERYONE should listen and expose themselves to Brian Asawa's talents. He can only be looked upon as a rising countertenor star soon to be at the same level as the "great tenors!" I am not exaggerating. FIVE STARS and TWO THUMBS UP!!! There is nothing more I can say!

Brian Asawa is simply heaven on Earth! Nothing else can describe that wonderous voice of his. You literally feel like you have died and are hearing the angels welcome you to their kingdom. When you listen to the CD you'll understand!

The compilation of songs here are an excellent line-up for Brian. It allows him to, in a sense, tell you stories with excellent lute accompaniment. "Come Again, Sweet Love" was an excellent choice to lead off the CD as it showcases the extraordinary abilities of Brian. His sweet and melodic voice almost transports you back to the late 1500s when this song was written. In fact, you will probably get that feeling with every song on this CD but it is to Brian's abilities that we credit this.

There are very few CDs that I can/do recommend so highly. Brian Asawa is a rising star of countertenors to the same level as the "great tenors." I do not exaggerate when I say this. He has a vocal gift that must be shared with the world and the more people that hear him the better THEY are for it. FIVE STARS and TWO THUMBS UP!!! What more can I say!!!

BUY this CD. I've had it for several years now and it I still listen to it. I've just pulled it out and it sounds fresh as ever. I won't go into detail, you can read the other reviews for that, but I think this album will go down as one of the finest chill out/mood albums of our time.

Some interesting tonalities, but . . . .......2006-09-09

Every track but one has a simple, thumping percussion line, an artifact of modern music which I increasingly find tedious. No doubt it is easier to appeal to the brain stem rather than the prefrontal lobes. Unobjectionable as background music, but not actually worth listening to. Perhaps best described as music which one may hopefully, in time, grow out of.

I think this album is timeless... the moods, melodies, harmony and textures are second to none. A great mixture of ambient to dance. Up there with the likes of Ulrich Schnauss and Manual. Contact Note is a good album, but Opalescent blows it away. A great buy.

Funny how after buying this album I realised much of it is played in Sex and the City, as well as a few other movies... Still great music none the less. :)

Best album I've ever heard.......2003-10-23

One of the tracks from Opalescent was included on a new age sampler CD attached to the front of Nature and Health magazine, which is where I first heard it. The more I listened to the track, the more I wanted the album, but trying to locate Opalescent in Australia was quite difficult. Luckily I managed to find it - finally! - and it has proved to be the best purchase I've ever made, music-wise. This guy is phenomenal, especially considering his age (21). My music collection includes a huge amount of Vangelis, Jarre, Tangerine Dream and most of the heavies of chillout, electronic and ambient music, but I think I wound up listening to tracks from Opalescent at least once or twice a day for literally months - more than anything I've ever owned. Hopkins' music is utterly mesmerizing. It creates an ambient atmosphere unlike anything I've ever heard before. Everything flows together. This will sound cliched, but if you only ever buy one chillout album, let this one be it. I cannot recommend it highly enough, it is one of those one-in-a-million perennially listenable albums that I'm sure I will never tire of.
