A wonderful album!.......2004-10-06
This is an essential new age album that you should not pass up. This was Patrick O'hearns best album before his new album surpassed it. This is probably Patricks most space oriented of his electronic albums to date. It's the dark electronic, rainy music that makes me love this album. Every song on here is a breakthrough for this extremely talented musician. Some songs I remember hearing when I was very young.
Rainmaker is a very haunting song with an intense misty atmosphere with some ceramic percussion. Sky Juice is a breathtaking song with very electronic synths and some jet sound effects with some thumping beats and a cool bass. However that is nothing like the next one. Cape Perpetual is beyond any word I can describe about this song. It's a very spooky track. It starts of with some strange breezy wind instruments and some thundering sounds in the distance. At about 30 seconds there are some synthesizer hums that fade in. The sound of the synth humming almost scared me at first listening. It then becomes a dark very space oriented song with ceramic percussion and thundering jet sound effects. I could close my eyes listening to this song and imagine myself traveling on the Orient Express through oriental space. This song alone makes this album a five star. Gentle Was The Night is a very beautiful song with just mostly synths. This is a great song. Fire Ritual is a very pop oriented song and some vocal doodling here and there. This is probably the brightest song on here. 87 Dreams Of A Lifetime lives up to the title. This is a very stunning and could rank as one of his best 80s tracks ever. It starts with just some ambient synths and the synths get louder and at about a minute into the song the real music begins. This is a haunting song with a catchy rhythm and a space jazzy stmosphere. This is my second favorite off this album. Dimension D is a very space oriented song with some haunting sound effects and a very dark ambient atmosphere. Forever The Optimistic is a pop oriented song with great electronic bass, a great hook and some synth tinklings throughout the song. I almost cryed when I first heard this song and today I consider this song a new age classic. Journey To Yoroba is another haunting song. It has lots of ceramic percussion and ambient synths. I love the drum loop to this song. The closing title track is great with more great synths and cool drums.
All in all I rank this album as one Mr. O'Hearns strongest masterpieces to date.
It's hard to really say how much I love this album because it really stimulates imagination in a way that none of his other albums can.
In fact this album for a time is almost like the soundtrack my high school years because it reflects lonely I feel sometimes. In fact I strongly recommend this album to all who love music to listen to while thinking. It's very intelligent music that should be enjoyed by all generations.
Well that's all I can say.
Bye!Bye!

Absolutely beautiful all the way.......2006-11-26
One of the most eclectic and proficient new age instrumentalists around, Patrick O'Hearn fuses elements of new-age and jazz into a unique, inimitable sound. "Homeward Bound" is a catchy, upbeat song that should do nothing but make you feel good. "Acadia", "Glory For Tomorrow", and "The Stroll" are all dreamy pieces of new age bliss, and the bouncy "April Fool" is oddly-titled but no less enjoyable.

Very happy new age stuff.......2003-11-12
This is one of the two only albums I own from this nice bassist and keyboardist. There is a feeling of joy and freshness in every track of the album. The quality of the sounds is amazing and the variety of percussions is probably the biggest I've found.
The first track, `Homeward Bound', is a very groovy and happy tune, with nice electric guitar and synths. The perfect beginning for an optimistic album, with a very airy and dynamic feel. It's like a joyful travel home...
`The Stroll' is a very clever, quieter tune, with predominant synths and bass, and some strong percussion crashes. Sounds like a very urban song, one of those ones that make you feel you've got lost in an unknown district and you enjoy discovering new places.
`Glory for Tomorrow' is one of the best tunes, including the very personal style from the guest trumpet player Mark Isham. A very nice guitar riff gets followed by the rest of the instruments, and Isham's mute trumpet draws a very quiet melody, with some nice ascending scales. Then comes a big part where a normal trumpet and the synths scream a very simple but effective melody.
I've always loved those synthesiser chords at the beginning of `Acadia'. It's like the drawing of a deep landscape after which comes the very driving rhythm of the song. This is another very happy song, with nice sounds and a very nice and simple melody on the `chorus'.
`Forgiveness' is a very melancholic, slow and deep song with nice synthesisers again and a very heartfelt fretless bass melody. It's a short song but works in balancing the mostly dynamic and rhythmic feel of the album.
`April Fool' is a very fast song with full percussion and strange synthesiser sounds. The whole song is crazy because it's full of strangeness and unexpected sounds, like the `Ooooh's' that seem to come from a tribe somewhere in the world.
`Reunion' seems to be a continuation of Acadia because it starts with the same synthesiser sound but describing a melody that's happy and melancholic at the same time. This song is a very positive one, with all those curious synthesiser sounds, and a funny melody from the bass.
`A Brief Repose' is similar to `Forgiveness' but even more static and almost silent. Isham's trumpet describes a really meditative state and the quality of it is outstanding... a very remarkable song.
`Subtle Persuation' sounds darker than the rest of the songs, but is very interesting as well. The electric guitar from Alex Acuña unfolds a very elegant and captivating melody... and at the end sound the opening melody of `Homeward Bound'...
The last song, `Portobello Docks' describes a very sunny and shiny place and at a whole it's a great end for the overall happy feeling of the album. Peaceful and serene, just like a morning after a stormy night, adds as well a certain nostalgic feel...
This is surely the best choice for getting into the music of Patrick O'Hearn... listen to it and if you like nice instrumental music this will light your day.
O'Hearn's daytime album.......2003-02-15
This 1988 opus from O'Hearn is a great follow-up to the extravagant "Between Two Worlds". Similar in sound and production, "River's Gonna Rise" is arguably O'Hearns more upbeat, brightest, and sunniest in mood, totally opposite in mood to "Indigo" and "Trust", this is probably the easiest album to get into. The album cover does kind of portray the mood of the album: daytime.
"Homeward Bound" starts the set with a very upbeat, sunny afternoon, and joyous sound and an eclectic blend of New Age, jazz, and some pop. It's probably the sunniest song that Patrick has ever recorded and a great one too. "The Stroll" is a mellower and less sunny in mood and more of a cloudy afternoon song. I often play this when it's cloudy on a summer afternoon. This is a very pleasant song. Kind of reminds me of "Life Along The River Vaal" from "Ancient Dreams". "Glory For Tomorrow" is a jazzier song with a gorgeous soaring climax with it's marching drums, synthesizers, and trumpet playing kind of like soaring above the landscape on a sunny afternoon. I love hearing the song mellow down during the last 50 seconds before finally ending. "Acadia" is a more upbeat, strongly electronic, New Age groove with a spacier atmosphere. "Forgiveness" is one of the darkest songs on the album but it's still a relatively daytime mood song in general although more of a cloudy late afternoon in mood. It starts with mesmerizing ghostly keyboards and builds into a serene jazzy song. "April Fool" is the most upbeat song on the entire album. The song starts with electronic jazz intro and becomes an exotic, upbeat, and semi-danceable song with an astounding blend of New Age, dance, jazz, and a little pop. The song even has a bit of a tropical feel to it too. "Reunion" is another standout song on the CD. It starts with a jazzy crescendo for about 1 and a half minutes before keyboards come in and the song becomes a jazzy and upbeat song with a sunny and joyous major note feel to it. I would even go far as to say that it could've even made a small dent on the pop charts. "A Brief Repose" is the darkest and most eerie song on the entire album. It's a mix of ambiences of guitars, haunting keyboards, and beautiful trumpet playing. I often think of walking through a path through the woods in a city when I listen to this gorgeous song as I think if this being a mix of urban and earthy all in one. "Subtle Persuasion" is an eerie New Age song with a slight spice of worldly xylophones against a backdrop of haunting ambient melody, slow rhythm, and electronic keyboards. This song has a very foggy daytime mood to it IMO. The closing track "Portobello Locks" is a calm sunshine afternoon song with a jazzy and mellow atmosphere almost like making it home after a long journey and the sun's rays shining through the windows.
From my knowledge, this album is sadly out-of-print in most places and is difficult to find. While it's not the best of what Patrick has offered, it's still a must-have just for the fact that it's now so difficult to find. This album is worth the hard search and is truly for the fans of the brighter side of O'Hearn's musical spectrum. It's completely opposite to the dark, desolation of his masterpiece "Indigo" and the electronic spacey feel of "Between Two Worlds" but "River's Gonna Rise" makes a wonderful compliment to the latter with similar sounds but contrasting atmosphere. Buy this album. Buy all of O'Hearn's albums. They are all worth it. :-)

Deep, dark, laid back New Age music.......2006-09-30
With an air of mystery, subtle menace and occasional majesty, "Indigo" is like the opening soundtrack to some dark-themed movie, portending any number of dire, heavy occurrence to come without actually ever reaching those points. There's no sweetness and light here. Those of you looking for friendly angel guides should look elsewhere; this music explores the opposite end of the spectrum. If these subdued, minimalistic, synthesizer-based compositions were designed for any sort of meditation, it would be a brooding, depressive meditation that I wouldn't recommend as being particularly healthy for long periods of time. But sometimes the cards just fall wrong, and you need a place to go to lick your wounds, re-gather your edge and your self-confidence, and mull over the possibilities such as they now stand. The world of "Indigo" is a good place to do that. Patrick O'Hearn's music is laid back enough to mellow you out, but cool enough--and with just enough percussion fading in and out throughout the album--to nourish your strength, renew your determination and encourage your spirit to rise again. A good retrospective of O'Hearn's work is "The Private Music of Patrick O'Hearn," and my favorite of his albums--similar to Indigo, but livelier and edgier, is "Ancient Dreams." Other synth-driven New Age music that often has a dark edge includes the work of Tangerine Dream, Llewellyn and Amethystium.

This was the first PO cd I bought. I liked it right from the beginning and don't seem to get tired of it. A classic and must have for PO fans.
Five Star Timeless.......2006-02-06
I listened to it again, today, 13 years on. It never tires, it never becomes too familiar. It is dark, moody and more consistent than Trust, the complete opposite of Eldorado. It sits alongside TD's Rubycon and KS's Timewind as electronic masterworks that leave you thinking about the music long after it is back in its case. It's brilliance, is that it does not need 20 minutes plus per track to leave you with the sense that the whole album is one whole, each track evolves from the darkness and despair of Devil's Lake to the dreaminess and sadness of Espana.
Timeless and transcending classic work of art! .......2004-10-06
This is one of P.O.'s most brilliant magical landmark albums to date. This is a complete departure from the sunny daytime feel of El Dorado and Rivers Gonna Rise. This is a very dark and more midievel sounding recoed that shatters new grounds in his music and is one of his strongest albums to date.
Devils Lake is a very scary sounding song with echoing pianos and a very ominous sound. At 3:56 some electronic percussion and some rhythm comes in giving a feel of traveling through space towards a glowing cluster of stars. Sacrifice is a haunting track with very dark tingling synths for about the first 3 and a half minutes. At about 2:40 drums come in and real add on to the song. The horns are beatiful. When I close my eyes when listening to this song I could imagine being out in the forest in the dead of night and then all of a sudden a green glowing, wide-eyed warrior ghost on a chariot coming out of the background being pulled by horses. Coba is beyond what words can say alone. It's a very frightening song with echoing drums and very nighttime synths. I love the intense bridge with strong synths from 2:18 to 3:00. It then ends with the ambient synths continuing. This is my favorite song on this album. Upon The Wings Of Night is what the title says. It's a most ambient song with trumpets but they really sound great.Sacret Heart is another beautiful but a tad bit brighter but still dark and spacey. The Beauty Within is another beatiful but with echoing pianos but at the last 30 seconds the pianos give away to pulsating synths and fade out. What an amazing song. Desire is absolutely magical. It starts out with dazzling synths. Then some drums come in. This is one of the best songs on this album. Ringmasters Dream is very unique. It starts off as an ambient track but then later it gradually morphs into a sort of orchestraesque song and then fades into carnival sounds at the ending. Espana is a truly magical closing track to this CD. It a very peaceful with a truly melancholy feel. A great closer to this CD.
This is one of Mr. O'Hearns strongest albums to date. It's so much different from his earlier works and paved the way for his more midievel sounding material works afterwards. This is an essential recoeding for fans of Patrick O'Hearn and all New Age lovers.
Still listen to it time and again, after 11 years.......2004-04-13
O'Hearn is a magical composer. I don't know music well enough to give you technical keywords, but I can tell you that it is nothing short of brilliant, and nearly timeless. The tune of in 'Espana', especially, has haunted me over the years, combining elements of nostalgia, solitude, and taking you away from the present happenings... it slows you down to freeze on a larger perspective; In 'Coba', 'Sacred Heart', and 'Upon the wings..' you will find a tremendouly up-beat swing, a strong rhythmic pulse with enchanting tunes. I fell in love with this album at once.

A retrospective of Patrick O'Hearn's deliciously dark New Age music.......2006-09-30
This compilation features selections from five of Patrick O'Hearn's albums released by the Private Music label. There are three tracks from "Indigo," one from "Between Two Worlds," four from "River's Gonna Rise," one from "Eldorado," and two from my all-time favorite of his albums: "Ancient Dreams." Also included are three bonus tracks, previously unreleased ("Irene," "Step," and the intensely cool "Down Hill Racer"). O'Hearn's dark, edgy synthesizer music is sometimes driving, sometimes funky, reflective, sometimes spacey, but always interesting--a unique and timeless personal vision well-suited to a label called "Private Music." Give this retrospective a try and decide which album you like best! If Patrick O'Hearn's music appeals to you, you should also enjoy that of Tangerine Dream. Try "Optical Race" or "Melrose." For synthesizer music on the brighter side, but equally original, sample the work of Mannheim Steamroller (aka Chip Davis) on the two disc set "Twenty Five Year Celebration of Mannheim Steamroller."
A gratifying compilation.......2006-09-03
Patrick O'Hearn's first five full-length albums are represented on this 1992 compilation--The Private Music of Patrick O'Hearn. Of the 14 tracks, three of them--"Downhill Racer," "Irene," and "Step"--were recorded especially for this compilation. The albums that are represented are Ancient Dreams (1985), Between Two Worlds (1987), Rivers Gonna Rise (1988), Eldorado (1989), and Indigo (1991). Ancient Dreams is represented by "Beauty in Darkness" and "Ancient Dreams." "Forever the Optimist" represents Between Two Worlds. Rivers Gonna Rise is represented by "April Fool," "A Brief Repose," "Homeward Bound," and "Portobello Locks." "Black Delilah" represents Eldorado, while Indigo is represented by "Sacred Heart," "The Ringmaster's Dream," and "The Beauty Within." The compositions are not in chronological order. Also, the material's sound quality is pleasing. The pieces that I consider to be my favorites are "Beauty in Darkness," "The Ringmaster's Dream," and "Step." The mysterious "Beauty in Darkness" exhibits an attractive, stately keyboard line and engaging percussion. The well-written "The Ringmaster's Dream" is an interesting, regal composition. "Step," one of my favorite instrumentals (in general), features captivating, pretty bass guitar work. As for the CD insert, an essay is not included, but a black-and-white illustration of O'Hearn is displayed. The disc is almost 68 minutes. Actually, I rate this album 3.5 stars. O'Hearn is an accomplished artist, and this compilation is a gratifying example of his output.
One my favorite New Age artist's.......2006-03-23
His music is very soothing, relaxing and uplifting. Four of the songs on this CD aired on The Weather Channel's Local forecast back in 1993. "Ancient Dreams" is one of my favorites, I mean Top 5 all time favorite. That songs always, sends me soaring when I listen to it. I feel Like I am at the top of the world... Very much strongly recommended
If you only one Patrick O'Hearn CD, this should be it........2004-11-30
This CD is a must for the Patrick O'Hearn fan who must have *everything* recorded by him since it contains 3 songs not released on any other CDs ("Down Hill Racer", "Irene", and "Step"). These new cuts will not offer any surprises for people who have any of his other releases (with the exception of "Mix-Up"). Having to buy a whole CD for only 3 new but average songs is a little annoying -- an effort, no doubt, to get established fans to come back to the well. On the other hand if you're new to O'Hearn, or feel that one CD of his style of music is enough, this is an excellent representative sampling of his work. There are 2 cuts included from "Ancient Dreams", one from "Eldorado", one from "Between Two Worlds", 3 from "Indigo", and finally 4 from "Rivers Gonna Rise". Actually the cut "Scared Heart" appears on 3 CDs if you count the original soundtrack for the movie "White Sands".
If you like this music, beware of "Mix-Up" which are re-mixes of Patrick's work. It is my favorite O'Hearn CD, but it is not at all like the others, disappointing many of his fans.
A wonderful CD compilation!.......2004-03-26
I first heard the song "Irene" when it was used on The Weather Channel's Local Forecast back in 1993. When I heard it, I loved it. When I bought the CD, "Irene" and all the other songs were outstanding! I started buying all of O'Hearn's albums at that time. I'm very glad I did. Because now the majority of the albums released on Private Music are out of print. I will always treasure "The Private Music of Patrick O'Hearn!"

Movie Soundtrack?.......2006-12-08
When I heard this i always thought this had to be a soundtrack to an adventure film. it had all the earmarks from start to finish. The adventure begins has a few sidetrips to various places around the globe and ends where the adventurer finds himself and what it was all about and that the adventure was better than it end result. Listen to each song, again, as i did and you to will see what i mean.
A new style takes form on here........2004-11-25
This is different from most of his earlier masterworks Ancient Dreams, Between Two Worlds and Rivers Gonna Rise. While this album has a lot of the trademark sound of the previous ones this album incorporates Middle Eastern and Mayan instruments to create a masterpiece in the world music category.
Amazon Waltz is a jazzy song with Brazilian wind instruments and percussion plus some chants as well. Nepalese Tango is similar to the previous one but not quite as fast and has some worldly bells and drums. I could play this one when driving through the jungle with mountains nearby on a misty day. Black Delilah is a unique track that incorporates stunning cello performances as well as a violin to create a masterwork. Chattahoochie Field day is a very daytime song with bouncy rhythms and a very jazzy vibe to it. The Illuminator is a very electronic song with beautiful synths and some plucky instruments. At the middle of the song the synths sounds very much like the pluck instruments from Enyas Orinoco Flow. This is my favorite song. One Eyed Jacks is another typical jazzy O'Hearn song but still great. Hear Our Prayer is a song with Middle Eastern drums and chants. Delicate is a dark track with the trademark synthesizers but has beautiful haunting chants. The title track is a very intense with thundering rain sound effects and bells. One standout track in this album. There's Always Tomorrow is a somber yet happy track at the same track. It's a nice jazzy closer to this album.
This is probably Mr. O'Hearns last daytime sounding album. This album is a definate masterpiece. It's totally different from the dark, chilling, frightning masterwork Indigo and all latter material that would follow. Definate buy this one.
Brilliant !.......2004-08-13
The perfect blend of rhythms, synths and orchestrations. Relaxation is not complete without this CD playing.

Dark, mysterious, and a study in contrasts!.......2006-09-30
"Ancient Dreams," released in 1985, is the first "dark" New Age album I ever acquired, and it's still one of my favorites--juicy, complex and predominantly electronic. While filled with percussive textures, this is not mindlessly beat-driven club music; it's a fascinating, ever-changing and very intelligently crafted journey through mood and sound. One of the things I love about it is how seamlessly and elegantly Patrick O'Hearn manages to combine apparent opposites--heat and chill, denseness and light, drama and funk. It's truly a unique and deliciously striking brew of musical nuances--simultaneously relaxing and stimulating. In the liner notes, commentator Freff writes "Music wears a thousand masks, and exists for a million reasons. It reaches our heads, hearts, and our bodies. It can be gentle, pleading, angry, demanding, healing: as fierce as fire and as cold and dangerous as thin ice. It is so many things because we are so many things, inside. The most special music reflects our private selves." This is a perfect description of Patrick O'Hearn's keyboard and synth-driven compositions. For more electronic explorations of the dark and mysterious, try also the work of Tangerine Dream, Enigma and Amethystium.
Short, new age ambient album.......2005-07-27
This is Patrick O'Hearn's first solo CD. It comes from 1985. It is only 32 minutes long. The sound quality is excellent.
This is one of those new age albums from the mid-eighties that took advantage of the new digital and CD technologies. It has a great dynamic range and beautiful sonic quatity.
Like most of the early new age work, this is all about the sonic qualities and making beautiful sounds. It is not about the compositions. Like many new age albums, this is just repeated sounds; very beautiful sounds; but no cohesive composition. I find it to be repetitive and boring.
There are some interesting parts to the CD, and track 6 is very good throughout. This whole CD might be OK as background music.
Patrick O'Hearn got his start with playing bass for Frank Zappa. He was then in Group 87 with Mark Isham (who plays trumpet on this CD). After that, he struck it big with Missing Persons, featuring 3 other musicians who used to play for Zappa.
the alchemist.......2005-02-11
extremely well structured album, perfectly rounded, not your typical cheesy new age!!! The texture of sounds and melodies are purely mesmerizing (malevolent landscape...), the recording, wich is fairly old, is truly state of the art... True passionates of textural music, don't miss that cd...

Why so many used for so cheap? Your chance to snag a bargain........2006-08-18
I'm a Patrick O'Hearn fan and I love this CD. But I'm pretty sure I'm in the minority. Patrick O'Hearn's other releases are pretty consistent in the style and tone. I'd describe his usual work as moody, sometimes dark, new age. This CD is radically different, because it is his music re-mixed by others. Hip-hop beats, environmental sounds, snippets of dialogue. You can imagine that the typical new age fan listened to this and said what the *&*@#$ is this noise! Too bad, because this is really wonderful stuff. If you like music from folks like "The Art of Noise", "William Orbit", and "David Van Tiegham", you should check this out.
I think there was a big stink from his usual fans about this release, because the one that followed (which was back to his traditional style and format) was entitled "Trust". :-)
