Editorial Reviews
About the Artist
A key member of the infamous "Bromley contingent" which helped to redefine fashion and culture in seventies England, Steven Severin formed Siouxsie and The Banshees in 1976 with Siouxsie Sioux. Steven was featured on all 14 Banshees albums and 30 singles as co-lyricist, songwriter and bassist during their two decades long career. During their reign, Siouxsie and the Banshees established themselves as one of the foremost alternative artists and the only members of the London punk scene to continue to evolve and and succeed until their 90s breakup. Since the split of Siouxsie and The Banshees Steven Severin has been busy working on various solo projects and collaborations as well as continuing to produce artists and writing articles on the arts and areas of intrigue for English publications such as The Guardian, The Independent, and The Passion. His first published collection of erotic prose/poetry, The Twelve Revelations, is set for a fall, 2000 release.
After having spent 20 years working within the confines of major record company labels Steven has decided to eschew all of that. Steven's RE: label, which is totally Internet based, does not have to concern itself with the current obsessed pop-orientated singles market, allowing for greater artistic freedom and control. The RE: label intends to release material other than music, such as prose/poetry, spoken word and video. Future plans include developing multimedia work "solely" for "the Web".
Visions, written and produced by Steven Severin, marks a radical departure from his previous musical compositions and the first release from RE:. Originally commissioned to write the soundtrack to Nigel Wingrove's film Visions of Ecstasy Steven has completely RE:worked the soundtrack, originally 18 minutes long, into a 45 minute ambient instrumental album.
Maldoror is Steven's second solo instrumental endeavor and the first in the RE:play series. It is a dark, textural work which serves as the score to Os Satryos' theatrical experience, Chants de Maldoror. Those familiar with Siouxsie and the Banshees will recognize the further development of Steven's ability to provoke the subconscious and intricacies of human emotion in a completely new musical setting.
The Woman in the Dunes is Steven's third solo release and second in the RE:play series. Written as the score to controversial dancer/choreographer Shakti and the Vasanta Mala dance company's piece of the same name. It features the vocals of Jarboe on a remake of Screamin' Jay Hawkins' I Put a Spell on You and a collection of almost entirely improvised instrumental pieces.
In addition to Steven's musical craftings, the website serving as RE:'s home-base continues to develop. Visitors to www.stevenseverin.com can read articles on J.G. Ballard, Roman Polanski, Sarah Stockbridge, Nico, and an article on the art troupe the Dragon Ladies all written by Steven Severin and published in UK newspapers The Guardian and The Independent (RE:Bound). The site has pages devoted to all of Steven's works, past and present, including a rare opportunity to see the inspirations and meanings of his lyrics. Site explorers may also indulge in a hypertext fiction project, Interior Exterior, which allows contributors to intertwine their writing with Steven's.
Former collaborations have included co-writing and performing The Agony is The Ecstacy with Lydia Lunch; co-writing the single Torment for Marc Almond as well as forming The Glove with Robert Smith of The Cure and releasing an album entitled Blue Sunshine. Severin has also worked with the Merce Cunningham Dance Foundation to produce a tape loop of for the 80th birthday celebration version of John Cage's Rozart Mix. Recently, he has served as Executive Producer for the score to Holy Body Tattoo's dance piece, Circa, and has produced the Tiger Lillies' forthcoming album, entitled Circus Songs.

Fantastic performances........2005-05-02
"Maldoror" is a unique concept, producer Michael Montes put text rom Comte de Lautreamont in front of Friedlander-- the master cellist read the text and improvised what he saw. The results are nothing short of breathtaking.
If you're not familiar with Friedlander's work with John Zorn and others, you're likely in for quite a pleasant surprise-- I can think of very few musicians I have had the pleasure of hearing who possess such a stunning command of their instrument as Friedlander does. His technique is overwhelming, particularly in pizzicato, and as an improviser, he is agile and inventive. These lead to the great strength of this record, namely that Friedlander can through his technique express something much more visceral than one would expect from any musical performance.
The improvisations are largely oriented on texture and space, whether arco or pizzicato-- each note counts, as does each lack of note. Friedlander may have an overwhelming technique, but what makes both him and this recording brilliant is his ability to make decisions about when to show it and when not to. "The Wind Groans", for example, is better served by long tones and understated delivery, to meet the mood of the piece he read, then it is by any show of powerful playing.
For fans of improvised music and virtuoso performance, this album is essential. Highly recommended.
Dark, Weird & Accessible.......2004-01-12
I bought this because I saw a piece on Erik and this record in the Wire, a magazine I really trust. And though it's not the kind of thing I usually pick up, I love Maldoror. It consists of dark and atmospheric cello scraping, bowing, plucking, and pulling -- all improvised. I know, I know, it sounds like it'd be really weird and inaccessible, but there's something about Friedlander's sense of melody, his technique, and his ability to compose on the fly that makes this a record a classy little thing. It makes me think of dark moments, French films, and John Coltrane's best work. Try it. You'll like it.

Engaging but a bit too structured for me........2005-05-11
A warning straight out before I go any further into this album-- Maldoror is a noise album (and what else would it be with Masami Akita/Merzbow as one of its two principles?). It sounds nothing like Faith No More, or Mr. Bungle, or even Fantomas.
What it is, however, is a great slice of noise-- if you're familiar with Merzbow, or with Patton's more out work (Weird Little Boy and Hemophiliac with John Zorn or "Adult Themes for Voice") and you like it, this will be right up your alley. Lots of distortion, noise, feedback, cartoon samples, screams, wails, moans, grunts, whispers, etc. The range of noise and sounds these two coax out is downright stunning. The only downside is that it feels a bit too well put together-- there's a really tight order and structure to this material that, while not obvious at first, takes away from the feeling of spontanaiety I like in music like this.
But still, if you like the really out/noise stuff, you'll probably like this, check it out. If you'll complain that there's no singing on here from Patton (and there isn't), skip this one.
dark spaceship of horrors.......2005-05-06
You are having a nightmare...but it's not too bad. You enter a spaceship and there are flashing lights everywhere...you are in dread as to what will happen...you fly through the air, through clouds and see lightning flashes and the occasional beauty of a planet...but the aliens you are with are schizophrenic and love to scream in your ears.
You have Patton's voice screams and warpings and Akita's electronic noise and chaos...yet it works.
NOTE: This is more of a noise recording (in the genre of noise) than any of Patton's regular works...because it's with Akita (from the famous Japanese noise outfit, Merzbow)...this is a duet of sorts...
There is a definite mood invoked here in each one of these songs. It just takes about 3 listens to notice something.
Here's the dilemma...this music must be focused upon and not used as background music...but some of the pitches of this album are so incredibly high, it will be hard for you to have the volume up at all...i mean physically, it will be hard for you to listen...but try to at whatever volume suits you. Be open to the atmospheres created...that's what this cd is doing...
it is mostly scary and dark I would say...but this is also this spaceship type atmosphere to it that you would hear as the soundtrack to a national geographic special on planets...mixed with Mike Patton's vocal terror.
NOTE: The artwork of this album is very explicit and can almost be shocking especially if you were not ready for it. It has very sexual imagery, but taken from the name of the project, it might make some sense...one thing to think about is how the artwork and the music go together...do they? and is that what they wanted?
You won't hear the same vocal focus as on patton's first solo album, and you won't hear the instrumentation of his second solo album...the only instruments here are voice (screams, laughs, etc.), elecrtronic noise, and some varied samples.
This cd is atmosphere, and there is obvious order amidst the disorder. But note: this might be one of the most challenging cds that you have ever listened to, if you are a mike patton fan.
enjoy the ride and watch your ears!
How do they justify it?.......2004-10-07
I am all for experimental adventures of a musical nature. But this is a poor excuse for creativity. I love Patton's stuff as a rule, but he seems to be getting further and further away from anything even remotely emotive or melodic. This is an annoying album that has noises on it that are quite simply unbearable at times. When you put this CD on with a quiality system, you literally have to leave the room. Funny the first time, but not when you have to do it every second track. And it's not just annoying noises... this is super sonic pitchings that made my Pit Bull terrier try to eat the speakers!!! How on earth is this good music or an interaction that you can take part in? I for one will no longer buy anything on the strength of Patton's involvement. I will listen first, as I feel that I could have made this album myself (seriously).
This was such a waste of money, I am considering throwing it out, such is how much it angered me!
Obscure classic hidden under a layer of noise.......2004-03-20
Much on the same caliber as the Mr. Bungle/John Zorn freakout WEIRD LITTLE BOY - Maldoror "She" is less an album of songs than a collection of sonic collages that tell an theme or express some kind of feeling. This is all old hat to the Mike Patton fans who have digested his Tzadik albums and collaborations but it might be a tad too experimental for some holdout Faith No More and more traditional music fans. Merzbow, who is as productive as Patton and Zorn, is in rare form - melding a collage of noise in which Patton paints with raging vocals, reverbing last moans, and drowning it all in a wall of scattered noise. Much like the aforementioned WEIRD LITTLE BOY, this is an unabashed sonic attack at parts, broken only by moments of silence and welcome sweet points of clarity & beauty, though it is missing the jazz interludes of the former that helped bring things to a calming center. I deeply enjoy this album, find it at the same time incredibly grating and beautiful, usually alternating and sometimes at once. Mike Patton and Merzbow are masters at creating soundscapes unlike those ever heard and this is another wonderful creation from the masters.

i want my mommy..........2006-10-18
C93 at present sounds so different compared to their early works. This is not to say more recent works aren't any good. As far as I'm concern, all C93 releases are superb! Live at Bar Maldoror is the soundtrack for conjuring up red bloody evil spirits stinking in yellow sulfur, this album along with "Dogs Blood Rising", "Dogs Blood Order" and "Dawn" seem to have a lot in common, the harsh electronic soundscapes slowly builds up alongside Tibet's echoing vocals writhing in pain, agony, angry, brooding it's a nightmarish listening experience. Try listening to all four albums one after the other late at night, lights off but one black candle lit and wait for the foul spirit to appear behind you, naked, scaly, grinning ear to ear. Oh yes, I assure you, it will show up.

Album Description
New Era Viral Order shows a marked change in direction; the music is cutting-edge, truly original post (black) metal. To name only a few influences would be impossible, maybe because they have so many, or perhaps because they have none; these nine songs consist of industrial and dark ambient elements combined, with almost dance-like segments and extreme vocals. This is coupled with industrial/black metal crossover drumming, EBM bass and cold, calculated riffage courtesy of the guitars. Code 666. 2005.

Product Description
Italian Death-rock titans Chants of Maldoror have descended. The masters of the balance of sinister elegance and demanding dissonance have returned with their long awaited 2nd album entitled "Every Mask Tells The Truth" which promises to shatter the face of art/deathrock into pieces.
No singer knows to voice both cool sovereignty in the tradition of young Peter Murphy in glorious Bauhaus-times as well as suffering passion in the vein of Rozz Williams in his early phase such as Adolphe; no band enwinds these unique vocals and their inspired lyrics as skillfully as Lotens whining yet powerful death-rock guitars, David's thundering bass und Echo's sometimes jangly and atmospheric, sometimes stern and attacking keyboards.
Like noone else, Chants of Maldoror stand for style, decadence and the nervous drama that is the maelstrom between flesh and spirit. The 12 songs of their unexpectedly versatile new album oscillate between harmonic peace and swirling torment, and document a significant new step in the band's impressive musical evolution.
