5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Set!.......2007-07-01

I am a huge fan of Jerry Goldsmith. They did a great job preserving his vision. I can listen to this collection for hours. Great music!

5 out of 5 stars Elmer Bernstein Film Music Collection.......2006-11-03

This is compilation of hit film music from one of the greatest composers in motion pictures. What is surprising though is the music not included like the Ghost And The Darkness, the 13th Warrior, Rudy and others. To be sure, 4 discs are not enough for a composure of this stature. THe recording, however, is an "engineering masterpiece" which makes the music even more enjoyable than when you first heard it at the movies. When are we ging to get the music that was omittd from this compilaton?

4 out of 5 stars Overall a strong Goldsmith sampler.......2006-04-11

Okay, this is a CD review, so the focus is on music, but I've got to say this first: this has got to be a contender for the ugliest cover art ever. I mean, come on...instead of a tribute to the composer, the cover looks like someone spilled a glass of merlot over a NASA photo.

Fortunately, even an ugly cover will not ruin good music. And the good news is that I'd say about 75 percent of the music is good....and on a 4 cd set, that's a lot. Like other Silva compilations, the strength of this compilation is the variety. There are selections from the big releases (Star Trek, Omen, Rambo), but there is also a healthy dose of tracks from the smaller releases(Under Fire, Lionheart, The Swarm).

Two examples come to mind. Capricorn One and The Great Train Robbery are two movies that are not exactly household names today, but are dominated by two of Goldmith's finest main themes. The City of Prague Philharmonic come through with terrific renditions. And there are plenty of other strong performances...a few being concert versions conducted by Goldsmith himself. Suprisingly, "The Wind and the Lion" works, which is no small accomplishment given the ferentic original performance of "Raisuli Attacks".

It's not a complete success. A few of the performances fall flat, particularly some of the more inventive scores. Total Recall is just bad, mangling the performance with poor percussion and synthesizer choices to boot. Also a letdown is the Klingon Attack from the first Star Trek movie. The Prague Philhamonic attempt doesn't sound bad--it's just that once you've heard the original soundtrack's "blaster beam" with enough bass to rattle your teeth...well let's just say Silva's version is a little tinny in comparison.

But I shouldn't dwell on the negative. Overall, this is a strong sampler of Goldsmith's variety. There are plenty of quality performances here, and despite a few omissions (noticeably Planet of the Apes)this is a very good release from Silva.

4 out of 5 stars Jerry Goldsmith - 40 years of pleasure.......2006-02-22

It was wonderful to hear Mr. Goldsmith's music that went all the way back to The Man from UNCLE, The Waltons, Dr Kildare, etc. And then to hear his music up to the present. The man was a genius!

4 out of 5 stars Almost the perfect compilation.......2005-12-31

Age has its value.... This sweeping collection of compositions brings back so many great memories. This collection shows how significant Goldsmith was for both the movie screen and the small screen. With such a grand collection, every reader can be assured that at least one movie or TV program they like or remember had Goldsmith's contribution. It was an amazing life and the collection well worth having.

However, as sweepig as it is, there are a few holes in the selection. "First Contact", one of the sweetest and richest compositions from the Star Trek is absent. "The Ghost and the Darkness" is missing and the "Medicine Man" music should include the theme song. By dwelling on several selections from the Blue Max, these were squeezed out. Three full and important movie themes got the axe.

However, all but "The Ghost and the Darkness" are readily available and not overly expensive as is the "Ghost" CD. This is a must have for the TV and movie music fan.

Before there was Hans Solo there was Napolean Solo, before ER there was Dr. Kildare. Jerry Goldsmith IS Sci-Fi. "Resistance is futile.. you MUST assimilate this CD collection."

3 out of 5 stars THE VERY BEST -- Almost!.......2007-06-06

Firstly, somebody somewhere needs to compile a "true" BEST OF Anthology for the superbly talented (and oft "overlooked") DAVE MASON. I realize that there are possibly legal protections which only "restrict" and "hinder" such a worthy compilation - due to the fact that several recording companies might be in conflict to allow the sharing of rights (thanks to our great and fair "Legal System" ... which SUCKS!). Anyway, this CD is a very nice compilation, but what I really HATED was that the final 3 songs (the very BEST tracks that I really wanted more than most) were "dreaded" LIVE versions!!! That of course is my personal preference, because I always prefer UNEDITED STUDIO versions whenever possible. Also, a SECOND DISC could have offered this option -- a few LIVE versions included ... plus including few other hits which could have been added from albums such as LET IT FLOW, SPLIT COCONUT and MARIPOSA DE ORO. Overall, not a bad CD - but the VERY BEST ?? ... well, ALMOST.

4 out of 5 stars Dave Mason Magic.......2006-09-03

Some of the best rock/pop songs ever come from Dave Mason as a soloist or with the likes of Traffic*(*somewhat obscure on many playlists, unfortunately, but an inspired and required must have for song-writers and rock collections). One of the sweetest "break-up" songs ever written is "We Just Disagree". Even though there are a few of my favorite songs missing from rockin' "...Watchtower to the enigmatic "Misty Morning Stranger" , still this cd decently shows Dave Mason's range and immense talent.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet collection of Dave Mason.......2002-03-22

This is a great CD! If you're into great harmonies and melodies, this CD is for you. Very pre CS&N sounding! The pure blend of harmonies, rhythms, melodies, and production make this a super rare collection of hits and obscure/hard to find cuts. Some of the cuts are absolutely live , and that is the only way to hear them! (What a rarity in this day and age...... No overdubs, etc.)This goes to show you how tight Dave Mason's band really was! From Traffic to Mama Cass to Fleetwood Mac, he's been involved/played with the best! Enjoy!!!

4 out of 5 stars Seventies Rock Fanatic.......2002-01-09

I've been a great fan of Dave Mason from his early Traffic days.Incedently what a fantastic group the original Traffic were.I already own Dave's " Alone Together " album and am absolutely thrilled to have at last found this one.
All the tracks are great with tracks 1,4,8,17,18 & 19 especially blowing me away.
A great album from a very underated artist.Long live the likes of Dave Mason,Delaney & Bonnie,Screaming Trees & Cold Blood.

4 out of 5 stars Nice downtempo.......2006-03-09

Tina Dico is among my favorite female vocalists who do work in the downtempo electronica scene (she's known mainly for her work with Zero 7). Between this EP and her recently released CD "In the Red", I'd purchase this one for sure. 3/6 songs are gems, with my favorites being "Break of Day" and "Warm Sand" (the latter of which is on "In the Red"). Definitely worth checking out!

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, not great.......2005-09-01

As other reviewers have stated, I am also a huge Zero 7 fan and was excited to see that Tina had released a solo effort. I had high expectations for the album (more like an EP) based on her excellent vocal contributions on the last Zero 7 album. Unfortunately, not blown away. If you enjoyed the ladies of Zero 7, I'd recommend you track down Sia's solo album, Colour the Small One. I haven't seen a domestic US release yet, and the import is quite expensive off of Amazon. I was able to download the full album off of her label's download site(...) for the cost of an average cd.

4 out of 5 stars Want more?.......2005-08-30

As it has now been said, Tina has released 2 albums prior to "Far", "Fuel" & "Notes", and if anyone's interested [and want to avoid going through resellers, like the other reviewer](...)
They carry "Fuel", "Notes" & "In The Red"!

Loving her music! :-)

4 out of 5 stars This Dane Rocks.......2005-06-01

Scandinavian exports have been flooding the music scene recently. The latest addition is Danish ice-queen Tina Dico, who formerly handed her vocals to chill out gurus Zero 7. Dico is following SiA's footsteps post-smooth electronica and delving into her solo career. Her first effort is a little short for an album.
Far is more like a promotional EP than a full-length release. It has six tracks on it and it showcases a young and eager talent.
Dico revisits her lounge days with "Warm Sand" a track reminiscent of her collaborators. Yet on the closer, she managed to deliver a stark folk performance on the melancholy mesmerize of "Back Where We Started."
Her voice is not spectacular but it holds a tune. The sincerity on "Break Of Day" proves that.
She captures escapism on "Let's Get Lost" and sweet enigma on "Haunted." The gender lullaby "Boys And Girls" is also a treat after a couple of listens.
Far is a great effort for six tracks. It captures innocence is a slow-mo manner. She had managed to please, now is the time for a full album.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing talent..........2005-05-28

Like another reviewer on this site, I discovered Tina Dico quite by accident while flipping channels, and saw the end of the Jimmy Kimmel show. The fadeout song was 'Home' by Zero7, sung by a pretty blond with an intoxicating voice.

Of course, they didn't tell who the band was, so I had to scour the web trying to find out who they were. I promptly bought Zero7's 'When It Falls' CD and am quite happy with it.

A little more web research led me to Tina Dico's homepage (Tina Dickow in her home country), which led me to 'Far', Tina's only album that I can find in the states.

I highly recommend 'Far'. After a couple of listens my wife and I became avid fans. Her lyrics are introspective and practical at once. Her delivery is fluid and soothing. The album gets played over and over at our house. It is a little on the short side, so we're hoping for more from Tina soon.

I hope she goes far with her career.

4 out of 5 stars Complete Overtures (plus Cox and Box).......2005-08-12

Trial by Jury doesn't have an overture - being a little one act "opener", and for some reason neither does Utopia Limited - just a short little orchestral prelude. When Utopia is performed, in fact, Sullivan's "Imperial March" is often added to the prelude, to flesh out something like a proper overture.

So this recording does actually include all the overtures - or at least an overture to all the Gilbert and Sullivan Operettas that HAD overtures as such. The undistinguished overture to Cox and Box is thrown in for good measure.

These works, it must be said, are very uneven in quality. Most of them were not actually written by Sullivan - but cobbled together by someone else out of the tunes from the operetta, often at the very last minute. The performances treat the overtures as music in their own right - and at least some of them deserve it. The overtures Sullivan DID write himself (especially the "Yoemen" overture) are fine pieces - as is the overture to "Patience" (written by a very young Eugene d'Albert) and the "Ruddigore" overture (in this case the later one by Toye rather than Clarke's original - but I actually prefer this!)

Several of the others are really very ordinary - although keen G&S fans will at least enjoy the quotations of the famous melodies.

All in all a very pleasant recording - even if you already have all (or most) of the works in question complete.

4 out of 5 stars Lovely recording of lovely music.......2001-11-04

I recommend this recording for all G&S fans. The overtures, including all of the well known ones and a few that are obscure, are very nicely played and nicely recorded.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Splendid!.......2001-07-08

One could not hope for a better collection of Gilbert & Sullivan overtures than these as performed by Andrew Penny and the Royal Ballet Sinfonia. With modern digital sound and spirited ensemble playing, one is left yearning for more. The overtures, though not the complete set, nicely cover many of the most popular G & S operettas. So tuneful are they, you can't help but sing along with the familiar melodies. More installments from this group would be very welcomed indeed. This disc has put a smile on my face and left me in a good mood each time I've played it, which has been often. I particularly enjoy the version of "The Gondolier's" contained on this disc because it includes additional music from the operetta not found on other recordings that I own. This collection is one that you will treasure, and can be recommended whole heartitly!

4 out of 5 stars First Rate G & S.......1999-08-27

Like any true "Savoyard",you will be singing along with the overtures found on this disc.Andrew Penny is a fine conductor and treats the music with the right touch of wit and romance. The "Cox and Box" overture (not a true G & S piece)is a great opener to the disc and putting the overtures in historical order lets the listener follow Sullivan's progression from a follower of Liszt and Mendelsohn to a composer with truly his own voice. My only complaint, and it's a very minor one,is that Penny and Naxos couldn't find room for Sullivan's best concert work, the "Overture DiBallo" on the disc. However the inclusion of the last and rarely performed G & S opera "The Grand Duke" more than makes up for it.I would recomend this to anyone just starting their G & S collection.Great price too!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie Scores and Great Music!!!.......2007-07-14

I love movie theme music, especially action movies. The music on this CD is exactly like the music I heard in the theater. Wonderfully scored and mastered. You will love it!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Possibly better than the original recordings........2005-01-16

Let me start by saying that this is a great CD. If you have lowered your expectations at the sight of seeing "Pops Orchestra" on the cover, I beg you to reconsider. This isn't some thrown-together congregation of neophyte musicians, this is a glorious symphonic sound. I will go as far to say that most of the performed tracks on this CD are better than the original movie recordings. Also, Telarc, as I am learning more and more, seems to have mastered the art of recording and mastering the orchestra, as the quality of this CD is stellar, not to mention in surround sound!! This CD should be owned by anyone who is a fan of the symphonic film score.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for People who can't afford all these soundtracks.......2000-06-26

I have to say I was a little skeptical about a Cd that claimed to have all these great soundtracks on one CD. After listening to it though i was amazed at how close it was to actually having each sound track. I was thankful that I had not bought all of these soundtracks. This is a must have.

The advent of stereo brought forth two competing Gilbert and Sullivan cycles that retain their classic status in divergent ways. Seasoned Savoyards lean towards Decca's D'Oyly Carte recordings, where the use of singing actors and inclusion of dialogue add up to a palpable theatrical experience. By contrast, EMI's competing cycle featured some of Britain's finest operatic singers of the 1950s and '60s, who largely command both music and text on equal terms. The nine operettas in this series conducted by Sir Malcolm Sargent--Trial by Jury, HMS Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, Patience, Iolanthe, The Mikado, Ruddigore, The Yeomen of the Guard, and The Gondoliers--are repackaged in a budget-priced, space-saving box. True, some might contend that Sargent's stoutly moderate tempos downplay the authors' irreverent bite, but at least you can make out every blasted word. And that's important, since EMI includes no librettos, just a synopsis of each work. As a bonus, Sullivan's orchestral forays outside comic opera fill out the discs, including incidental music to The Tempest and The Merchant of Venice, the touching Overture in C ("In Memoriam"), an attractively tuneful Symphony in E, and a fascinating reconstruction of a Cello Concerto, whose autograph and parts perished in a 1964 fire. You simply cannot find a more comprehensive Gilbert and Sullivan bargain than this highly enticing set. Grab it while you can. --Jed Distler

4 out of 5 stars The complete Sargent G&S.......2005-07-08

Actually, its not! But it is a complete edition of the last recordings he ever made of the operettas in question.

The evidence of pre-war Sargent recordings (for instance his earlier "Princess Ida") shows that when he was a little younger he appoached these works with vigour and a stong sense of musical humour. As he mellowed (or got older, anyway) his interpretation of G&S definitely became more personal and reverent (or, if you like, slower). Whether you like this or not is absolutely a matter of taste. There are times when those of us more used to other productions may find a mellow geniality in the music rather than the razor sharp wit we are used to. On balance it has to be said that Sullivan comes off better than Gilbert when you slow things down a bit.

My own personal opinion is that if you only want one performance of each operetta I would look elsewhere. If you love G&S enough to want several recordings of each one - then get these - if only to enjoy a "different" slant on the music.

5 out of 5 stars Nice collection...but you can get a better price........2005-01-20

This boxset is really a gem for Gilber & Sullivan fans and all operetta lovers. I am not going to add more good words on its excellent performance and nice recording, 'cos it has already got enough of them.
I am not complaining about the price of Amazon, but I purchased this boxset in Hong Kong at an extremely attractive price of HK$218, ie US$28. This price is not only for this boxset, but for all EMI boxsets with the same packing, no matter how many CDs are in one box (from 6pcs to 16pcs). I can't understand how this astounding price gap comes into being. Maybe Amazon should contact EMI for a better promotional price.

4 out of 5 stars An operatic approach to G&S.......2004-01-31

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, as soon as the copyright on Gilbert's lyrics expired, EMI began to issue what could have been the complete series of Gilbert & Sullivan collaborations but never quite finished. Of the 14 operettas from "Thespis" to "The Grand Duke," only 9 found their way into the EMI series. In order of composition rather than recordings, they were "Trial by Jury," "HMS Pinafore," "The Pirates of Penzance," "Patience," "Iolanthe," "The Mikado," "Ruddigore," "The Yeomen of the Guard," and "The Gondoliers."

They are all played by the Pro Arte Orchestra under the baton of veteran G&S conductor Sir Malcolm Sargent (who conducted most of the RCA Victor/HMV electric recordings) and feature the soloists and chorus of the Glyndebourne Festival. The only voice familiar to devotees of the earlier recordings is that of George Baker, who had assumed most of the comic roles on many an acoustic and electric recording, although he himself had never appeared in any of those roles on a stage.

Once the days of the mono LP were over, the Decca (overseas) and London (over here) labels were busily issuing stereo versions with D'Oyly Carte casts while EMI was giving them stiff competition with their Glyndebourne people. While the D'Oyly Carte singers were not quite up to their rivals vocally, several of their recordings included the dialogue, which was a bane to some, a blessing to others. However, now that both companies have reissued their complete Gilbert & Sullivan sets in a budget format, you can judge for yourselves which is superior. But it is of the EMI set that I wish to comment here.

It comes in a box of 16 CDs, arranged in the order of composition, except for "Trial by Jury" which follows rather than precedes "Pinafore" as part of the same set. My only quarrel with the series as a whole is the lack of a good basso profundo, especially for the role of Pooh-Bah. Using opera star Geraint Evans as Ko-Ko, Jack Point, and the Duke of Plaza-Toro was not a good idea, since he does not have that lightness of voice and sparkle the roles require. But George Baker takes over in the other comic leads; and it is difficult to believe that this man had made a "Mikado" recording back in 1917 and was still going strong. Oh, of course, now and then the patter songs take their toll. But Baker is a G&S legend and I am one of the thousands who love him.

The leading tenor (in 7 of the 9 recordings) is Richard Lewis, whose voice may not be as characterful as some of the D'Oyly Carte tenors of old but is beautiful to hear. The leading soprano is Elsie Morison, who can tackle the coloratura of Josephine ("Pinafore") and Mabel ("Pirates") with no trouble. Sounding a little too mature, perhaps, for some of the other roles, her vocalizing more than makes up for it. Now remember that most of these singers have long operatic backgrounds and approach Sullivan's music in that mode.

When the EMI LPs were transferred to CDs, the extra time each disc could carry called for several "fillers" or what is now called "bonus" tracks. So as an added inducement to purchase this set, you will also hear Sullivan's symphonic alone in his overtures to three of the works not included, "Overture in C," "Symphony in E," "Overture di Ballo," incidental music to "The Tempest" and to "The Merchant of Venice," and the "Cello Concerto in D." They are taken from more recent recordings with different orchestras and conductors.

The booklet gives all the casts and tracking, along with synopses cued to the tracks. However, newcomers are advised to find a good edition of the plays so they can follow the words and perhaps pause between songs to read the equally clever dialogue as a group entertainment.

So even if you own other recordings of these immensely popular works, I am sure you will enjoy this EMI set very much indeed. And yes, some of the sets are still available separately in their individual jewel cases.

    5 out of 5 stars A gem!.......2003-08-13

This may not be a complete discography of their works, but what a pleasure it is to have. Forget about the librettos since they're public domain and can be easily found on the web. By the time you've finished listening to a few of these masterpieces, wonderfully conducted by Malcolm Sargent, you'll be like me; whistling and humming 'till you drop over with euphoria. Enjoy it!

3 out of 5 stars Great Value and Some Unusual Items - OK performances.......2003-07-15

I give this set somewhat mixed reviews. On the positive side, it is a great value, is well-recorded (especially given that some of the recordings go back to the 50s) , and includes come unusual orchestral works, in addition to 9 operettas. On the negative side, I just don't think these are the best performances of the operettas, in that Sargent really does adopt tempos that often just too slow and the singers sometimes sound just a bit too serious for the roles. My favorite G&S are the recent Telarc performances (Pirates, Pinafore, Mikado, Trial by Jury, and Yeoman) -- great sound, fine singing, and very lively performances.

5 out of 5 stars Don't underestimate those "unknown" Operettas!!.......2005-07-07

This is, as far as I know - the only way of buying the "official" recordings of "The Grand Duke" and "Utopia" - which seem to be otherwise out of print!! Several of the others are not that easy to get either.

In any case - most people getting this set will already have the Mikado, and very probably Pirates and Pinafore for that matter, so you're really getting it for the others.

So just for the record - someone has to say this!

The Mikado is (of course) a wonderful piece, but it enjoys its long running status as the most successful of all the G&S operettas very largely for "extra-musical" reasons. It is visually so wonderful, with all those great authentic costumes, and the whole idea of satirising English institutions by pretending they are Japanese is of course brilliantly funny.

Again, Pirates and Pinafore enjoy a lot of their acclaim simply because we have heard them so often. And at least part of the initial success of these (admittedly very funny and entertaining) pieces was the vogue for "nautical drama" on the popular Victorian stage.

Iolanthe, Ruddigore, and Yoemen are all MUCH stronger musically than any of what another reviewer here keeps calling the "trilogy". Patience, Princess Ida, and the Gondoliers all excel either "nautical" operetta, at least musically, although not, perhaps, the Mikado. And I have had a lot of fun listening to my recording of the Sorcerer - although I think most at least of the other G&S operettas are even more interesting.

As for "Trial by Jury" it is really another thing altogether - but in its kind the most perfect thing either Gilbert or Sullivan had anything to do with!

This leaves Utopia and the Grand Duke.

Both of these were produced after the long running friendship between G&S had soured, and they have been sadly neglected ever since. Utopia is none the less both musically beautiful and very funny, and well worth taking an effort to come to grips with. The main point of the satire (which many commentators and reviewers seem to miss) is the way that the English language and British (especially English) institutions were being adopted, often rather uncritically, by countries around the world (most, but not all, of them members of the British Empire, of course). India is perhaps the country Gilbert had most in mind, but you could set it in any of a dozen other countries. The residual problems this has left in the post-colonial world ensure that this work is still far from dated. In some ways this operetta is about globalisation! What could possibly be LESS dated than that!

The Grand Duke, on the other hand, is a bit of an odd man out - I suppose you still have to say it is the weakest of all the G&S efforts. It's the ONLY one that didn't score a very respectable run on its first outing. Surprisingly, however, if an attempt is made to duplicate the musical and (especially) dialogue cuts that G&S would have done themselves if they had not by this time been at each other's throats all the time, a very entertaining piece can be made of it. I was very agreeably surprised by the Ohio Light Opera recording, which does just that - and I am coming round to the idea that the only thing really wrong with the Duke is that it is too long.

    ANYWAY:

For all people (especially callow youth) who remain convinced that G&S only wrote three operettas worth listening to - all I can say is, buy this set, and give the lesser known ones a chance. Make sure you have a libretto in your hands as you listen, of course. It may even just need a single hearing in some cases, but otherwise, be patient. In the meantime, you really cannot have any conception of what you are missing.

    5 out of 5 stars A few details.......2004-03-28

This 24-CD album consists of 12 plastic cases, each with a thin booklet giving background and plot summaries for the works on its 2 enclosed CD's. Most of the album consists of 15 operettas, 2 of which (Cox and Box, The Zoo) have texts not by Gilbert and 7 of which (The Sorcerer, Princess Ida, The Mikado, Ruddigore, Yeomen of the Guard, Utopia Limited, The Grand Duke) omit most of the spoken dialogue. Before listening to any of these operettas that you don't know well, you'll want to obtain a copy of its text so you can read along and not miss any of the words or the wit.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful set, if a little inconsistent at times........2003-07-07

If you thought that the Sargent set of G&S opera recordings was gargantum enough, then this D'Oyly Carte cycle is even more gargantum. Although it is more expensive (because of the four extra operas that the Sargent cycle did not include), this complete 24-CD set is like a joy to behold. There is a debate as to whether this is better than the Sargent cycle, but I like to think that this is a delight from first disc to last, because of the idiomatic sense of polish that these recordings seem to have, and are given a life that makes them able to breathe well. This is all thanks to Isidore Godfrey and Royston Nash's conducting. I know that the performances may not be entirely consistent (this is evident when you compare the performance and recording quality of Mikado and Pirates with those of Gondoliers and Pinafore), but this is only a matter of personal preference. The 1960s performances were given more sumptuous and well-detailed recordings than the 1970s recordings, made when the performing style was not so fresh. But anyway, I still think that this is definitely a good buy for anyone who loves G&S. Even with the consistency of Sargent's cheaper EMI set, I would still say: do go ahead to invest in the set because of the liveliness and style in this complete G&S cycle that Sargent never (hardly ever) tackles. The only thing is: I would also like to suggest complementing it with the 1957 Decca D'Oyly Carte recordings of Mikado and Pirates, recently released by the Sounds on CD label, so that these recordings can do justice to the enormous spirit of these operas.

5 out of 5 stars Mormon Tabernacle and Vocal Majority.......2006-11-10

This has got to be one of the most incredible musical presentations that I've ever experienced. These two groups together in concert effect more joy, sorrow, remorse, nostalgia, victory, hope and power in 30 minutes that most of us experience in years. Amazing!

    5 out of 5 stars Great Music.......2001-01-19

With the incredible proliferation of rock, and now rap music, this album is a great example of what music can me - simply beautiful. The MTC is, as always, splendid, and the Vocal Majority is truly wonderful. This a great album of sacred and secular songs, beautifully performed, and a genuine pleasure to hear.

4 out of 5 stars two excellent choral ensembles strut their stuff.......1999-02-16

This CD features two renowned groups in some of their best work. The MTC, of course [of chorus], is known around the world. Vocal Majority is less global in its familiarity but equal in its skill. For my part, I prefer the sound of an all-male ensemble. This is not to gainsay the MTC, however: only a preference. If you want to hear two great groups performing a popular array of songs, this choice will not disappoint.
