Long recognized as one the most acclaimed recording artists in the Orient, Kitaro has always taken his music far beyond the borders of his native Japan. He has reached millions of people on every continent with his stellar recordings.

Though his public presence has always been cloaked in the tradition and mysticism of the culture into which he was born, Kitaro's music does not yield to boundaries or national categories. His compositions weave `a boundless playworld of a thousand pictures and a web of gentleness and wonderment'.

This two disc set features the best of Kitaro from 1976-1986. It features music from his best selling albums during this period including Silk Road, Oasis, India, Millenia, Ki, Tunhuang and Silver Cloud.

Realize this original and universal soul who has become the master of the wordless lyric and experience the peace and harmony of this collection.

Writers have hinted at the healing properties of his `Sound Pictures' and Kitaro has acknowledged that his purpose is to calm the inner person: "the wars in the world don't come from outer space . . . people create them, people who have a war within themselves. I want to create music that eases that war within".

For a prolific and good composer like Kitaro, it may be difficult to provide a nice compliation that can satisfy everyone. But this one does a pretty good job on selection of tracks. However, the CDs seem to be a bit "short" - time-wise, and I am a bit upset about having to pay a 2 CD price and then get a 1.5 CD worth music. Granted, the selections will be to the liking of all Kitaro and most New age fans...a little bit of repitition in tunes and arrangements, but nothing annoying. Good CDs, not classic. Between this and Mozart/Bach, pick the latter.

I have always had a problem with the term new age as it applies to music. It encompasses artists like William Ackerman, George Winston, Ray Lynch, Enya and of course Japanese synthesizer player Kitaro. What do these artists have in common? For me it's the otherworldy quality of their music. It's music that conveys a sense of peace and calm--an almost spiritual quality. The music on these two discs are the soundtrack to the happiest days of your life. Listen and enjoy. [My only complaint is that both discs clock in at under fifty minutes.] RECOMMENDED

If music like this could be heard by more people around the world, there would be less spiritual void in the hearts of us all. This type of musical and spiritual fulfillment could bring many people part of the self awareness we all need to live a more peaceful, understanding, sharing, and a less destructive, materalistic life.

Unfortunately, the sound clips provided here on-line do not indicate that Kitaro will be both annoyingly repetitious and pretty much stuck in the upper registers of human hearing, almost completely ignoring what we call "bass." I was very much disappointed, having been permanently separated from my money. Perhaps I can trade it at a local pawn shop...

If an alien came down and asked me: "What is music?" I would give him Bach's "St.John Passion", a Mozart symphony, and Kitaro's "The Best of Ten". These are the works of a genius, a spiritual giant. There are selections in this collection that make me weep for joy. Buy this 2CD set and bathe in the glow of its magic.

I fýrst lýstened to thýs musýc ýn a documentary ýn Turkey called Sýlk Road. I really lýked the musýc but could not fýnd out who the artýst was. I fýnally found the musýc today. It ýs great to fýnd some calmýng and hypnotýsýng musýc. I recommend thýs album to anyone who lýkes relaxýng musýc.

Double CD-album...Soong Sisters track added bonus. Kitaro really feels what he plays, would love to hear him in concert! Favorite is the beautiful "KOI". Recommend this CD !!! Yes!!

A "Kitaro field" is when you are hit with music that is intensely tranquil, and beautiful. You just slow right down, and relax. This is Kitaro doing what he does best: beautiful, slow music. "Koi" is particularaly nice. "Dance of Sarasvati" has a kind of Carribean sound to it, and it moves for a Kitaro piece. "Lady of Dreams" ushers Kitaro into the world of rock. Jon Anderson's vocals blend seamlessly with Kitaro's instrumentation. The Soong Sisters soundtrack is Kitaro's first soundtrack. I would really like to see the movie now. You can really hear a movie in this music. The style is very reminiscent of James Horner's style, particularly "Braveheart" and "Dances with Wolves." Another good example of Kitaro flexing his abilities as a musician.

I've been a massage therapist for 3 years and I have tried other music, but I keep going back to this. My clients have told me that when they can't sleep they will think of my music and be able to begin the relaxing process. Silk Roads is my favorite song, and I say that almost every time (if I don't, my clients will remind me). That song touches my soul like no other!

In 1980, few people knew about the Japanese synthesizer player named Kitaro. He'd released a few albums in Japan, but Silk Road was the album that put Kitaro on the map. Originally recorded as the soundtrack to a Japanese TV series about the trade route between Europe and China, Kitaro subsequently released it as a double LP. This disc contains some of the best themes from that recording as well as some other songs, including 1996's "Flying Celestial Nymphs" and "Caravansary" featuring Yu-Xiao Guang's delicately expressive lines performed on a native Chinese violin called the huquin. The Best of Silk Road concludes with two new pieces, "Pray at Xian/Mercury," nearly 18 minutes in length. They feature Kitaro on Native flute playing over gentle arpeggiations. Although these pieces do become tiresome in their repetition, the Japanese composer's melodic trade-offs with To-san on Chinese pipa are a serenely austere respite from Kitaro's often overly lush orchestrations. --John Diliberto

This CD features a previously unreleased version of the `Theme for Silk Road' as well as `Pray at Xian/Mercury', which was recorded live in Xian, China during Kitaro's 2002 Silk Road tour.

A good album. If you like the theme from The Silk Road, you could also purchase the original video of The Silk Road produced by NHK TV Japan. Kitaro's music is soothing and an excellent accessory to meditation.

        I am so tired. I can hardly stay up. Am I in a sushi restaurant? I can't keep my eyes open. Have I been sedated? No, I am just listening to Kitaro the most boring artist around. No songs just wind chimes, delicate bells and synthesizers. He must be a real hoot live! This could be used as an alternative to anaesthesia.

        Hey, I'm listening to his best song, zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
