Product Description
All compositions of this release have their origin in improvisations performed on nylon-string guitars. In the work from 1975 through 1984, modification of the pure timbre of the guitar is achieved through the use of amplifiers, analog effects boxes, and objects used to 'prepare' the instrument. These objects included a paper clip interleaved through the strings at the bridge, an 1887 silver dollar used in striking the strings, and in one case, an A440 tuning fork moved across the guitar top. Digital delay and 'tape loop' effects are also used in two pieces from 1984. Compositions dating from 1988 to 1997 are created with a nylon-string MIDI guitar as an instrumental basis, and make extensive use of computer-based electronic MIDI sequencing.
The most recent piece is produced by software which works with a knowledge-base of musical experience derived from its analysis of several guitar improvisations. The actual sounds in created by MIDI tone generators 'programmed' by the software itself.

The bustling cantata "Cotswold Romance" came into being as part of Ralph Vaughan Williams's attempt to script a major opera, one of national scope. Hugh the Drover, completed in 1914 and first performed in 1924, was deemed less than a success, in part because of a pivotal boxing scene. So Vaughan Williams extracted "Cotswold" as the 34-plus minute cantata, collected here with the incidental music for Maurice Maeterlinck's play Death of Tintagiles. Richard Hickox helps the cantata shine by drawing on the British folk song elements that Vaughan Williams invoked. The role of Mary is performed by soprano Rosa Mannion, and Hugh's character is sung by Matthew Brook. While both perform excellently, the crux of the cantata is the role of the voluble London Philarmonic Choir and the downright exuberant London Symphony Orchestra. Just as the original opera chronicled Hugh's travails, from love to pugilism to the stocks to freedom and, again, love, so too does the cantata. It's an altogether exciting piece of work, capturing so many elements of Vaughan Williams's oeuvre and still staying well outside the usual, what with the narrative progressions and the chorus's pivotally dramatic role. "The Death of Tintagiles" closes the CD with 14-plus minutes of far more foreboding music. --Andrew BartlettCustomer Reviews:
One of the best VW recordings on the market.......2005-10-02
Dew-kissed music.......2000-11-21
Well, the Chandos/Hickox recording is as resonant and full-bodied as one could want, and contains some of the best music in the opera, (adapted and slightly altered by Maurice Jacobson.) Highlights include the love scene, which moves from the most intimately lovely folksong, ("...in the night time, I have heard you calling, calling..."), to a climax that would do the Richard Strauss of "Four Last Songs" proud in its estatic harmonies. In the finale, "Freedom at Last," VW hurls one exhilarating chord after another in the duet, "Oh, the sky shall be our roof...."
What feel-good music. (Rosa Mannion and Thomas Randle sing radiantly.)
If one is feeling a litte too dew-kissed and moist after such a springtime affair, a silica gel package is included in the form of "Death of Tintagiles." Touching music, but a drier VW, similar to "Riders to the Sea."
