Originally recorded in 1980, this assortment of dated electronic music was rereleased in 1989 when Yanni's career was just starting to catch fire. Recognize it for what it is: an historical document, an audio time capsule intended only for the most zealous of fans. It appears Yanni was in something of a Styx phase when he composed much of this music. It has its occasional charms, but they are sporadic. --Terry Wood

Customer Reviews:
This album has one of my favorite songs of all time.......2006-03-28
The whole album is really good. Some of his best work in my opinion. But Twilight stands above even the other tracks as an excellent song!
If you like his other albums, but think he is a bit on the light side, give this album a try. It's the most intense of his music.
Dated but for a reason.......2004-10-17
This was originally recorded in 1980 and reflects that time and technology. Also not mentioned anywhere in the liner notes is the fact that several of these pieces were originally parts of rock songs from the band Yanni was in called CHAMELEON.
If you come to this album after having heard Yanni's more recent material, this will seem odd and definitely not up to snuff sound-wise. But as a "document" of his early days and for any 1978-1984 Minnesota rock band or CHAMELEON fans out there, this will evoke some fond memories.
I do wish some of CHAMELEON's recordings were available on CD, particularly TECHNOCOLOR or the single of STRANDED.
Bad Yanni.......2003-05-14
How can there be BAD YANNI? Isn't that redundant? But, this album really does demonstrate that such a phenomenon exists. Truly impressive.
So why two, and not one, stars? The music here is hilarious. He is trying to play instrumental Styx. And, my god, it's almost worth owning this album for that humor value alone.
from a more dynamic time.......1998-12-02
Those who feel that Yanni is all new age fluff will be surprised by this album. Many of the cuts are very dynamic and moving. Almost Rick Wakeman inspired tracks. Sounding somewhat like sports show themes, the pieces are synthetic and dramatic.
Grand Introduction: Here comes the master.......1998-11-18
The first album by Yanni and much more than what I expected!! After listening to all of his other later albums, partly due to their greatness, I was ready to be disappointed when I decided to give this album a try. What a pleasant surprise! It was one the most brilliant Yanni albums and it contains sounds you cannot find in any other Yanni albums. To find out what I mean, be sure to check out "The Butterfly Dance" and "The Strings".

psygone is sick!.......2004-03-18
this album, optimystique, is the best example of powerful goa trance i have heard. its a perfect blend front to back. its one of those few albums that every song is great, and there is no filler. the best track is a tie between tasmania and spirit of the jungle, tasmania is one of those tracks to end all tracks, and all the elements come together in the end and it makes a beautiful layered effect. spirit of the jungle is a great track that starts out with an elephant sounding his trunk. the melodies in this album are awesome and stick in your head all day. i highly recommend this album to anyone looking for a complete goa exerience
