About the Artist
Ronald Houston, violinist and violist, is a classically trained musician who has performed on stages all over the world as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral performer. In his diverse career, Ronald has performed on the stage with such immortals ranging from Itzhak Perlman to Led Zeppelin. It is this background which drew Ronald to the idea of producing music which breaks the barrier between classical music and popular music. I have a strong desire to make the worlds most beautiful music accessible to all people throughout the world, regardless of their backgrounds or knowledge of any type of music. I believe that music should have qualities that are easy to listen to and satisfying, said Ronald in a recent interview. Ronalds performing style is one that blends warmth, humor and virtuosity.

John Landefeld is also a classically trained musician of the highest level. As a cellist, John attended the world-renowned Eastman School of Music in New York. John has performed as a cellist with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, the Dallas Opera and the New World Symphony. But Johns talents do not remain strictly in the classical field. He soon ventured out and toured as the guitarist in the rock band, The Apathetics. John is interested in the production of music as well as the performance side of the art. His talents include those of arrangements and recording production. His merits include the engineering and production of Ronald Houstons latest release, Conversations. It was through this project that Ronald and John formed the group, Houston and Landefeld.

Both Ronald and John felt a calling to bring great music to people everywhere. Their long time association with each other, both as colleagues and good friends, allowed them to bond instantly together musically. Their similar mission has brought joy and strength to their projects and performances.

A performance by Houston and Landefeld is truly an event, both musically and spiritually. Ronald and John do everything in their power to bring joy to the audience. Their performances are filled with captivating music, stories and visuals. Their music speaks to people of all ages. The music that they perform is timeless. The passion they display is unequaled, and the dedication to their art is immeasurable.

This is a great collection of works from 19th and 20th century women composers. Keep in mind, it is only a small sample of what's available, but an excellent place to start. It is also a good choice if you are a teacher wanting to introduce women composers to your class and do not want to invest in dozens of CDs. There are no large-scale works on this CD, so it is ideal as a sampler (or for use with kids in a classroom setting). I highly recommend this CD.

A top-notch sampling of mainly 20th-century music by women composers, including Lili Boulanger and Pulitzer Prize-winners Ellen Taaffe Zwilich and Shulamit Ran, this cd proves that the music has been excellent all along. What we have needed are good recordings of superior performances. The samples often are brief--e.g., a single movement from Clarke's cello sonata--yet do provide jumping off points for more concentrated pursuit of favorite composers. Those uninitiated in women's works will become familiar here with some of the best of the last 150 years: Clara Schumann, Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, Thea Musgrave, and on and on. I hope every author of a text on music since 1840 will come to know and adore this cd, then include the music in their discussions of music history. It's about time!

    Album Description

    Neva Pilgrim is known throughout the country for her extensive work with composers, many of whom have written for her. She appears regularly in recital and as soloist with orchestras, having performed with the Chicago Symphony, New York Philharmonic, Brooklyn Philharmonic, Syracuse Symphony and Clarion Concerts. She has concertized in Japan, Canada and Europe and appeared at such festivals as Tanglewood, Marlboro, Chautauqua, Monadnock, and Saratoga Baroque.

    Edward Smith , is known throughout the USA and Europe as a soloist and ensemble performer. H received his Bachelor of Music from Lawrence University, studied composition with Luigi Dallapiccola in Italy, and was a student of Ralph Kirkpatrick at Yale. Mr. Smith was a member of the famed New York Pro Musica from l964-69, was a founding member of the Philidor Trio, and has been a regular performer with the New York Consort of Viols and the Waverly Consort. He presently resides in Verona, Italy.

    Steven Heyman studied at Juilliard and the Hochschule für Müsik in Vienna. He has performed throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe and has received prizes in competitions including the Beethoven Competition in Vienna, the Gina Bachauer, Southern International Competition, the Portland [Maine] Competition and the American Music Scholarship Competition. He was the top American and fourth Laureate in the prestigious Palm Beach Invitational International Piano Competition. Mr. Heyman teaches at Syracuse University and Hamilton College in upstate New York.

    Pilgrim's voice is without expression or feeling, and unfortunately, is with excessive and unstable vibrato. The selections are wide-ranged and interesting. The program has great potential as a comprehensive resource, but it's vocal performance lacks talent, technique, and interpretation.

            these songs are interesting...particularly because i never knew the oboe could be played so well...what would we do without oscar? i don't know who the oboist was on the recording, but they should really think about a future playng with one of the violinists who was also incredible. i wonder if they were classically trained under nec tutelage???

              I cannot heap enough praise on THOUGH LOVE BE A DAY. Soprano Diana Guhin Wooley and pianist Richard Steinbach, calling themselves the American Celebration Duo, perform ten songs and song sets by as many composers. The music on this disc has been culled from over 100 songs submitted to the duo in response to a call for scores. All of the songs are very good; several are outstanding. The great work in this collection is Antonio Carlos Defeo's "Sonnet 23"--poem by Elizabeth Barrett Browning. I spent the better portion of one recent morning listening to it repeatedly and weeping like a baby through much of it. Of course, Browning's text is magical, and Defeo's exquisite lyrical gift and a wonderful harmonic and rhythmic sense heighten the poem magnificently. This beautiful song rates among the best new ones I've heard in years. Several other songs merit special recognition also. Gwyneth Walker's fine setting of EE Cumming's quirky texts are captivating and enjoyable, and John Luebke's lithe "Barn Swallow Suite" should become a classic. The performances are heartfelt and the sound quality is excellent. I rarely recommend song recordings to all, but I love this disc and believe that every music lover will want to own it.

              The American Celebration Duo has given us a window into the world of the composer of our day. Nothing scary here -- no serialism, atonality, or academicism. Just ravishing melody. From Gywnneth Walker's set "though love be a day" to Howard Helvey's remarkable setting of Christina Rosetti's "Another Spring," there isn't a clunker in the lot. And, the performances are fabulous; Diana Wooley's warm voice beautifully complements Richard Steinbach's exquisite pianism. Highly recommended for anybody, especially those who fear the music written in the past century.
