A concept album about the fantastic world of dreams, Eldorado may be the Electric Light Orchestra's most fully realized recording. Combining the grand, sweeping vision of founders Jeff Lynne and Roy Wood with the craftsmanship and outstanding production values that marked the megahit albums A New World Record and Out of the Blue, Eldorado is a near-perfect fusion of rock & roll with a full orchestra. While newcomers won't necessarily find much here in terms of standout tracks, true ELO fans will know that this merely demonstrates the quality of the album as a coherent whole. Digitally remastered, it sounds better than ever. --Robert Burrow
Customer Reviews:
One of my Top 5 all Time Favorites.......2007-06-28
I loved the MOVE and glided gracefully into ELO. This album in 1974 became "the" album of the seventies for me. I listened to it so often I own three vinyl copies. The first one I wore out, the second one I bought to take it's place and a third one I have is still sealed (Saw it on sale in the 80's at a cut rate price and bought it for a time when copy #2 got too noisey). If you ever liked even one ELO song you must own this CD. It is Jeff Lynn's ultimate work. His lyrics take this character from the real world back and forth to the dream world he would rather live in. I always thought that the character dies or commits suicide by the last song as he sings about not coming back to the real world. This is my interpetation not Jeff's.
Amazing!.......2007-05-16
This is a great one- possibly my favorite from ELO, even though I love "Face The Music", "Out Of The Blue" and "A New World Record". The title track is breathtaking and delightfully well-written - but then again, so are all the other tracks! Listen for The Beatles in "Mister Kingdom" - Jeff Lynne mentioned that this was his "Lennon track" - it sounds compellingly like "Across The Universe". The extra tracks are great and very revelatory. I wish "Dark City" were longer! A fantastic album from fantastic band, headed by a underrated and fantastic musician!
Dreams........2007-02-24
I grew up with ELO. Although 'Out of the Blue' may be their signature album, 'Eldorado' was their climax. If you just want to listen to fluff, pick something else. If you want to understand what this rock group was about, and 'feel' their music, pick this album. The music is filled with the magic of 'dreams.' Think, 'Phantom of the Opera' in ROCK!
Nice To Lsten To.......2007-01-27
This is such a nice album to listen to. It' sort of like a fantasy and Jeff Lynne wrote some wonderful music, but if you're expecting some "jump out of your seat" great-hook songs ( with the exception of "CAN'T GET IT OUT OF MY HEAD") that most people are used to hearing from ELO, you won't find it here. While this album is a good work of art by Lynne and the gang, just like it says on the title A SYMPHONY BY ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA, that pretty much sums it up and Lynne does a good job here. If you really like some orchestral music, in the realm of scores (which I do) then I highly recommend this, but if you the more cemented ELO sound, then I suggest FACE THE MUSIC as a good start.
Highlights: "ELDORADO OVERTURE","CAN'T GET IT OUT OF MY HEAD","POOR BOY GREENWOOD","ELDORADO" and "ELDORADO FINALE & INSTRUMENTAL MEDLEY"
Conquering the ^^^MOUNTAINS^^^ of my inner musical landscape ..........2006-11-23
Today from one of my favorite long-term look-outs ... HIGH ON A HILL, IN ELDORADO))))))))
Don't laugh, this is one of the most magic-filled, melodic & memorable albums of the 70's in my opinion ("I CAN'T get it out of my head", damn that song for being overly infectious). Music like this does repel evil! This guy has such an ear for bridges, choruses, hooks, tie-ins and hopelessly dreamy anthems that you are left at the end gazing at your ruby red slippers in an unshakeable golden-glow trance. What a perfect blending of the technology (i.e., lots of Moogs, etc.), instrumentation, emotion and songcraft of the era.
The (30 piece) atmospheric orchestra with resonating cellos and booming lower register contrasting with the electric guitars (I enjoy his focused, structured playing), violins and Lynne's oddly soothing singing (and falsetto choruses with 20 piece choir in spots) ... "THE LOVE OF AGES FILLS THE HEAD" (Overture). The tradition of great music craft is respectfully channeled, albeit more simply for the pop song structure. Eldorado WILL take you on a journey if you let it, and messages shared lyrically (yes they are included with notes from lynne on meaning) add depth and timelessness that can't be ignored:
"The city boys and the country boys, They come from miles around. To defy their King and country, Save the poor folks from the hand, Of thieving dukes and abbots, And the gentry of the land" (Poor Boy - One of my favorites by ELO).
"One thing I have learned through these years, Is that no man should be stricken with fear - It should be that he walks with no care in the world. So my friends that are gathered here today, HEAR THIS CLEAR, for I'll not further say, That NO MAN shall cause me to take up arms again" (Boy Blue, a catchy and brilliant song with a good message).
"...IN BETWEEN THEIR LIES, THE PLACE TO CLOSE YOUR EYES" (Instead of the North & South, a recent parallel presents itself??? We shall always dwell in Eldorado it seems, the Earth spins round @ and never slows down).
This was my first ELO album and helped ignite a lifelong musical love affair with prog-rock for me (I did love the Beatles, Moodies and Elton when I was younger, which leads naturally to ELO) and got me thinking more about picking up the guitar (after I bought the album myself in the mid 70's around 6th grade - I was soon to delve into YES a few months later which kicked it into higher gear), which has turned into an ongoing and permanent passion thankfully, as luck would have it.
The nice package on this 2001 remaster makes the time spent (about 48 min.) all the more worthwhile. The sound quality is beautiful to me and far better than my ancient record. You will be pleased I'm sure (Some good pictures, notes and two excellent extras to close the album with a welcome extra dose of swirling magic). Put aside all prejudices and go on a Laredo Tornado ride with Jeff Lynne & ELO (FEEL IT, DON'T ANALYZE IT) ... enjoy when the world closes in!

Customer Reviews:
Loses a star for the price.......2005-12-17
I love Neil Young. He is my all-time rock hero. But even our heroes let us down sometimes - and Neil sort of screwed all his fans outside of Japan and Germany by not releasing this ep elsewhere. Three of these songs would be included on the album "Freedom" (and the other reviewer here is way off: "On Broadway" and "El Dorado" are the EXACT same version; the third song, "Don't Cry," was edited down slightly from this longer version, but is basically the same track) Thus, only a true Neil Young fanatic like myself would be insane enough to pay more than 30 bucks for the two rarities on this ep:
"Cocaine Eyes" is a top-notch rocker, a real potboiler of a song with some great anti-drug lyrics. It's definitely a highlight and should have been made more widely available.
"Heavy Love" is only so-so. It's a decent Neil rocker, but the lyrics aren't that good and the riff is sort of plain.
Overall, this is a solid ep. But, more than half of it is inlcuded on "Freedom" and for this price, it is for hard-core fans only.
Cranked.......2005-10-11
Perplexingly enough, this little e.p. was released only in Germany & Japan in 1989. But herein lies one of least known & best recordings of Neil Young's ongoing career. This thing sounds like it was recorded live. Maybe it was, I don't know. Despite a low key release, it signaled the start of a pissed off period where the amp level was cranked up to 11. Nirvana was soon to be the rage, & Young caught "grandfather of grunge" laurels as of result, but he was ahead of his time & seemingly oblivious of all that when he cut this furious slice of bile.
Clocking in at around 20 minutes , Eldorado outdoes likes of Freedom, Arc, Weld or Ragged Glory. The sense of isolation, fury & disgust here has no equal outside of Tonight's The Night & On The Beach. But neither reached the battle torn shores of this sonic Normandy. Cocaine Eyes blasts things off & is an absolute classic. The chorus of Don't Cry is a desperate plea warbled in the eye of Like A Hurricane thrashings. Heavy Love ends with Young screaming himself raw. On Broadway is a caterwauling dirge-like howl take on the old, classic standard & blows it's Freedom counterpart away. Things mellow a bit at the end with the haunting Eldorado, that is until Young starts weilding his guitar like a sawed off .30 ought six.
Another too well kept secret on what is popularly regarded as a forgotten classic. Short, but far from sweet, there is a sense of catharisis reached here that wouldn't work on a full length L.P. If you've found yourself to be a newfound fan, do not hesitate to seek this out. Shame about the price, but it's worth every rusty, bloodstained penny.

Album Description
The Man From Eldorado is a masterpiece created by singer, songwriter and storyteller David Parry from the writings of Canadian poet Robert Service. Following a narrative shape inspired by Service himself, Parry leads us through the many phases of Robert Service's life, from the poignant and poetic to the outrageous and gregarious. The Northern stories for which Service is most famous are well represented here, along with work from his Paris bohemian days, World War I experiences and much else. Many of the poems are set to tunes for the first time, with melodies that echo turn of the century music hall and British folk traditions. Songs and poems are woven together into a seamless whole, for a wonderful theatrical and musical experience.
Also known from his work with the folk group "The Friends of Fiddler's Green" and from his innovative theatre work at the Canadian Museum of Civilization, David Parry brought his immense acting and musical talents to bear in what has to be his final recorded work. Borealis is proud to give this album the greater appreciation it deserves.

Billy Boy Arnold's 1993 album, Back Where I Belong, was a true event, for it not only marked the reemergence of a major figure from the first generation of Chicago blues artists but it also revealed that his talent hadn't diminished with the years; if anything, it had deepened and darkened with age. Now Arnold has built upon that comeback with Eldorado Cadillac, an even better release. Arnold, a singer and harmonica soloist who still reflects the influence of his original mentor, Sonny Boy Williamson, leads an all-star band that includes D.C. guitarist Bob Margolin, Chicago guitarist James Wheeler and New Orleans pianist Sonny Leyland. Together they forego the stomp rhythms of Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon for a bluesy, greasy swing that's pure pleasure. --Geoffrey Himes
Customer Reviews:
Lot's Of Fun!.......2002-04-13
Billy Boy Arnold can certainly be counted among the legends of Chicago blues. The former Bo Diddley sideman, can blow his harp with the best of them and his soulful vocals represent blues at it's finest. On this CD, Billy Boy is joined by former Muddy Water's guitarist Steady Rollin' Bob Margolin and the result is a delightful, upbeat, sometimes comical and always fun, blues CD. Check out "Loving Mother For You" a classic if there ever was one. The tune starts out with a beat similar to Muddy's "Mannish Boy" but then breaks into some clever and comical lyrics supported by pianist Carl "Sonny" Leyland and the guitars of Margolin and James Wheeler. Great stuff. If you haven't heard Billy Boy, this is a good place to start.
3 1/2* -- Good, But Not the Real Chicago Blues........2000-10-06
Hailed by the Chicago Tribune as a "blues legend," Billy Boy Arnold (and you got to like that name!), a veteran of the 50's blues scene and former bandmate of Bo Diddley, is a master harpist, reminiscent of Sonny Boy Williamson and James Cotton.
On the best of these tracks, such as "Sunday Morning Blues," the musical elements come together, achieving the controlled frenzy of a Muddy Waters: Arnold's ripsaw harmonica, the dissonant, rolling, slide guitar, and, especially, the brilliant punctuating riffs by pianist "Sonny" Leyland, recall Waters' seminal "Fathers and Sons."
Unfortunately, the harp and Otis Spann-style piano offer the only consistently satisfying sounds here. The guitars are mostly relegated to the background, and the bass and drums are competent but not especially invigorating. Most importantly, Billy Boy Arnold's vocals sound shallow: His timbre is thin, and he often sings with little conviction. Of course, no one can compare to Muddy Waters, but listen to "Fathers and Sons" (or any of his great albums) and you'll hear the voice of the real Chicago blues.
The jump blues pieces are fairly predictable; however, and the sax sometimes sounds too polished-more like the old SNL band in NYC than anything from Chicago. Finally, the closing "Loving Mother For You", aside from being juvenile, is WAY too long, a trait it shares with "Man of Considerable Taste."
Still, this is worth a listen, especially for the spine-tingling harp and piano. Includes brief notes and personnel list. While this CD is a mixed bag, kudos to Alligator Records for their continued support of the blues, and excellent sound quality.
