Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
For all that Native American music (and art, and culture, ad nauseum) is all the rage these days, it's still pretty unusual to come across a recording that at least tries to incorporate elements of that music without destroying it. At first, one would hesitate to bet on Blue Chip Orchestra, an Austrian group that likes to play with electronics. But Red Sky Beat works surprisingly well, with a light touch on the synthesizers and much attention paid to musicality. A synth bass pairs off with a sung melody; electronic sounds, bubbly as a glass of champagne, complement a flute; there are acoustic and electronic drums and percussion and natural sounds that might or might not be computer-generated. That two such apparently disparate forms of music are even brought together on one recording places Red Sky Beat in a select group; that for the most part the result is successful places the CD in a class by itself. --Genevieve Williams

4 out of 5 stars A bargain collection of showtunes.......2005-08-19

This bargain collection of showtunes is highlighted by the composition of Kurt Weill and the uniquely rolling tongue of Colette Lyons. I have a complaint about this compilation. It includes "Ol' Man River", but it excludes Al Jolson's rendition of "Ol' Man River." Otherwise, this collection gives you ample bang for your buck.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This is very nice music.......2006-11-30

I can't claim to know much about the "mechanics"of writing and actually making music, but I really enjoy this CD.It transports me to another "world",beyond our modern confusing babbel of daily noises in this fast-tracking life in which we find ourselves!

5 out of 5 stars For those who truly appreciate Native American culture..........2006-03-23

First of all, this entire CD tells a Dakota myth of creation - every track is part of the story...with that in mind, it makes perfect sense to have tracks that contain elements such as winds and fire crackling. If you are looking for something that is strictly music, don't buy this CD - there is plenty of other new age electronica to choose from.

If you enjoy going to pow-wows, and other Native American events, you will appreciate the detail put into this album. This isn't just a CD you pop into your car for background noise - this is a journey you become a part of.

I loved this album so much, when my son was being delivered into this world, we had this CD playing...I think track#6 was playing when he actually made his appearance...anyway, if you are trying to expose your children to different cultures and music, this is a good album to start with. My son is only 7 mos old now, but he loves listening to every track.

I have yet to find another album I enjoy as much as this one, for this particular genre.

3 out of 5 stars Great music - annoying sound effects.......2004-05-28

This CD starts off so well (tracks 1 - 6). The music is smooth and well-put together with a blend of Native American voices, flutes and modern intrumentation. Deterioration is a good word to use when it comes to the last half of the album. Tracks 7, 8 and 9 are nothing but noise - no music at all. I haven't even entirely made it through them because they are irritating at best. The last track, #10 is great (except for a few sound effects). Again, it's music and it's good.
Listening to the first part of this album I get the impression that Blue Chip Orchestra is talented and capable of putting out some great music. Why the noise? I have to wonder. Did they run out of musical ideas? I have been waiting for a (improved )second album but so far there isn't one. Too bad. Blue Chip Orchestra has so much potential.

5 out of 5 stars THIS CD IS AS GOOD AS SACRED SPIRIT I &2.......2002-12-09

IF YOU LIKE TRIBAL INDIAN/NEW AGE MUSIC THIS CD MUST BE PART OF YOUR COLLECTION

3 out of 5 stars Memorable music deteriorates into annoying sound effects.......2002-11-03

This CD fares better than "Sacred Spirt" in attaining a blend of Native American chants with contemporary music. While the early tracks are excellent, the synthesis is not sustained over the entire CD. Sound effects of an entirely too crackling fire and later a extremely harsh whistle from a winter wind signal the deterioration.
