With Peacemaker's Journey, Native American artist Joanne Shenandoah may well have made a recording that will appeal even to those who've previously been dismissive of the genre. Voted Best Female Artist in both 1998 and '99 at the Native American Music Awards, Shenandoah has even topped herself with this concept album that chronicles the Iroquois legend of the Peacemaker. Elements of the story, as written in the fine liner notes, correspond with Biblical tales of the Christ Child, Lazarus, and even Moses. Understated, graceful, and universal in appeal, the artist's magnificent vocals are married with a warm array of both Native American and classical instruments. Peacemaker's Journey is pure magic. --Paige La Grone

4 out of 5 stars Let your mind flow free.......2007-01-23

The melodic content of this CD is quite good, and Joanne's singing is superb, as usual. To fully appreciate this CD, one must follow the story she is singing...the creation of the Oneida world. One should read the story in the jacket, and keep it handy as the singing unfolds, so as to follow the moods.

5 out of 5 stars Hope and Peace.......2006-01-11

This legend of the peacemaker shares so many ideals of the greatest traditions of religion, democracy and society. Joanne Shenendoah honors her Iroquois traditions and enlightens our own.Her voice reaches a very sacred place.
This CD is a satisfying friend to accompany you on your own spiritual journey.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful & Peaceful.......2005-04-02

I agree with everyone else's reviews of this music, with one correction. The liner notes do include english translations of the lyrics. (One reviewer suggested they were missing). The booklet provides a beautiful rendition of the legend of the Peacemaker (written in English). Then, in the center of the booklet, the songs are listed individually & include both the Iroquois words and their English translations. There are just a few lyrics for each song, sung slowly & repetitively, like a mantra. Truly relaxing & gorgeous music.

5 out of 5 stars Haunting..........2001-11-02

Joanne Shenandoah was named Best Female Artist for both 98 and 99 by the Native American Music Awards. And, you can see why!

Shenandoah's voice is smooth and silken and almost haunting. This album was inspired by the legend of the Peacemaker who helped bring peace to the Haudenosaunee, known also as the Iroquois.

You will be drawn into this music. It is very relaxing and is perfect for the holiday season.

5 out of 5 stars This is just gorgeous.......2001-05-17

I picked this up while on vacation in Arizona recently. The whole CD is really beautiful, she writes great melodies and her voice is very pleasant. It's also very tastefully produced, using live instruments; I have bought other albums of Native American music and was disappointed to find them very heavy on the new-agey synthesizers -- don't worry about that with this one. All in all, a truly relaxing CD.
