Healing Music - Piano
Editorial Reviews
About the Artist
Growing up I dearly wanted to make music my profession. Sadly for me, music was looked down upon and considered unsuitable as an avocation. So I more or less gave up on the idea and concentrated on my career.
Fast forward a couple of decades (Time goes by doesn't it). The years hadn't been kind. I was sick, frail and on permanent disability. Late 2001 I underwent surgery, and became so ill afterward I nearly died. That same year I was diagnosed with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS).
By 2003 I was so horribly ill I'd lost all desire to live. That winter, after three hospitalizations, I went home determined to never again see the inside of a hospital room ... irregardless of how ill I became. I told my friends and family I wanted to die at home. My health gradually eroded, until one fateful afternoon I was sure I was dying.
As luck would have it, dear friend happened to call while I was on my way out. He took it upon himself to drive 30 miles to my home, pick me physically up off the floor (I'm a really big girl), and carry me to his car. He drove me to his home, and resuscitated me when I went into respiratory arrest. Something he did two more times over the course of the next six months he took care of me.
Cameron's sister also suffers from MCS. He took me to the right doctors and helped me find ways of coping with the disease. He also encouraged me to get back into music, saying it would help to heal me. Amazingly, as I regained my ability to play the piano for extended periods of time, I started to recover.
Product Description
A calm & nurturing oasis of sound, offering healing tones for body, mind and soul.
This CD contains the first serious compositions I've written in decades. It also marks my return to grand piano, after 15 years absence. Much of the music was originally written at the request of Dr Yu Chen.
"Lament" was composed after the holocaust in Beslan, Russia. When I heard how many children had been killed I was so moved that I sat down and began playing. The music you hear is the end result.

In a recording career spanning over 20 years, Peter Kater has typically displayed his talents in duo or ensemble settings (smooth jazz, Native American, New Age, world), so it's a little surprising to note that Piano is only his third recording of piano solos. An additional, welcome surprise is the potency of his playing. A vibrant, even vigorous production, Piano offers a fresh view of Kater's creative instincts, revealing not just pastels and sunset hues, but bold swaths of color and a broad dynamic palette--all coalescing into an expressive blend of energy and elegance. Kater's compositions (some, from past ensemble recordings, recast here as solo works) are thoughtful and complex, and at times are so note-dense that you may yearn for more breathing space. ("Espresso," for instance, is aptly named.) Yet the effect, ultimately, is elevating, particularly on the disc's attractive first five pieces--tracks that succeed first as think-pieces, later as mood-setters. Kater even slips in a few bars of blues into "Anthem" and "Fool and the Hummingbird," sly winks to the reduced-saccharine ambitions of Piano. The result is an earnest, full-bodied release, one that earned Kater his second straight Grammy nomination (following 2003's Red Moon). --Terry Wood
Customer Reviews:
Peter Kater At His Best.......2006-11-13
Peter Kater's "Piano" album is vibrant, dynamic, and very aesthetically pleasing. I am impressed with his style and level of expertise. Not all artists in this genre can provide the depth and variety that Peter Kater can. Very powerful, touching, and enjoyable. It is no surprise that he was nominated for 2 Grammy awards, one for this album. He is that good. If you love the sound of a piano in talented hands, you must have this CD.
A superior performance........2006-07-12
This is an album of great solo "Piano" tunes. It is very relaxing to say the least. Having ordered several copies for relatives, it receives unanimous approval. I would recommend this to anyone that appreciates fine musicianship and enjoyable music.
Timeless.......2006-03-16
This music brought me back to the piano. After I ordered the CD I ordered the songbook for it from his website. Of course I cannot play as well as he does- but playing his music is as much an experience as listening to it. His playing is first rate, his emotional range and power are impressive. His technique is very strong and the performances are a joy to listen to and the pieces themselves are like musical stories.
from Solo Piano Publications.......2003-11-28
The simply-titled "Piano" is an extraordinary collection of Peter Kater's most-loved and most-requested piano solos recorded in a studio setting with a concert attitude. The music is alive and dynamic, and has the feeling of freedom and spontaneity usually found only in a live performance. Without letting flash overshadow the beauty of the music, Kater clearly demonstrates that he is one of the best contemporary pianists around. His passion and power communicate so strongly, and yet his tender moments are fragile and breathtaking. With thirty-eight recordings to his credit over the past twenty years, Kater is both a prolific and a compelling artist. Classical structure and jazz improvisation run through all of Kater's music, and rock elements sneak in from time to time as well. Excellent through and through, this is one of my top favorite recordings for 2003! "River" has long been one of my favorite Kater pieces, and this version is incredible. My favorite track, though, is "Trilogy." I can't find it listed on any of Kater's previous albums, so it might be a newer work. A 7 1/2 minute track, it opens with a very melancholy melody that draws you in; then the rhythm changes and becomes much more urgent as the passion builds; the third movement returns to an introspective and searching mood that again builds passion and energy, melting down to the quieter side once more. "Trilogy" is one of those pieces that makes my fingers absolutely itch, and I hear that there could be a songbook in the works with the music from this album - very good news, indeed! I also really like "Thanksgiving," which is much lighter and more optimistic. "Days Past" is a beautiful musical reflection, soulful with a sense of deep longing. The very jazzy "Espresso" ends the CD with a grin - another one that makes my fingers itch! Other titles include "Ascent," "Fool and the Hummingbird," "Spirit," and "Anthem." Excellent from start to finish, I give "Piano" my highest recommendation.
A great piano album.......2003-11-26
I've seen Peter Kater in concert many times and I have to say that owning this album is like having him in my living room or car. It's just amazing. I can tell that he really went for that "live" feel. Full of passion, hills and valleys, sensitive and powerful . . . this is a real journey. Plus the record has not only his "classic" songs (like "Spirit", "The Fool & The Hummingbird", "Ascent", "Thanksgiving", "Coming Home" and "Expresso") that he's been perfecting for years, but a couple new songs that are just wonderful (Trilogy, to be specific). I highly recommend this album to anyone that's ever bought a New Age piano album; and to any long time Peter Kater fan. It's one of his best for sure!!!

The title of this project is aptly-named. Regina Carter, a Detroit-born, classically-trained jazz violinist, traveled to Genoa, Italy in December, 2001, and performed on Paganini's legendary Guarneri violin nicknamed "the Canon." After winning the hearts of the skeptical Italians, with armed gunmen surveying her every move, Carter played flawlessly, and became the first jazz musician and African-American to the play the instrument. The next year, Carter returned to Genoa, recorded on Paginini's violin and performed a pleasing program of crossover-friendly light classics, South American compositions, a movie tune, and original works. Produced and arranged by Jorge Calandrelli and Ettore Strata, and backed by a combo led by pianist Werner "Vana" Gierig, the selections, while not exactly groundbreaking, successfully show off Carter's impeccable and soulful playing, and the violin's rich and reverent tones. An 18-piece orchestra supports Carter on Ravel's "Pavane pour une infante defunte," Piazzolla's "Oblivion," and Ennio Morrricone's Cinema Paradiso theme. Borislav Strulev's cello co-stars on Luiz Bonfa's "Black Orpheus (Manha de Carnaval)" and Faure's "Apres un reve." For Debussy's "Reverie," Carter delivers some straight-ahead swing. In sum: She came, she saw, she conquered and, she swung. --Eugene Holley, Jr.
Customer Reviews:
I love love love Regina Carter.......2007-07-23
This is a great CD and I listen to it over and over again. She is so versatile and her sound is amazing as are all the performers on this disc.
Cocktail Music, or Meditation Music, Classical with swing.......2007-07-17
The most outstanding music I've heard in years. It was playing in a designer's home in Highlands, NC when we went to show it to real estate clients. And boy did it set the mood: Sophistication, High Culture and Joy.
After we left, we orderd 3 copies- one for each of us.
And we buy about 2 CD's year. That's how motivivated we were.
Still can't believe how bad it is.......2006-10-28
Terrible, terrible CD. I got it two day's ago and could not even listen through the whole CD. Regina plays the violin and the music with such bad taste. What a disgrace to the once Paganini's violin. I can't believe I spent my money on this. It should not even have 1 star.
Like a breeze, caressing you..........2006-08-21
Well, you know how there are some songs that work best in their original form and should not be remade / remixed / jazzed up by any musician at all? Regina Carter is the exception to that rule, for her touch is magic.
Save for Regina's own composition, every song on this album is given a contemporary jazzy twist. The sound is light, breezy and wistful. Regina possesses the inimitable ability to make a violin sing so tenderly, it breaks your heart just listening to her play. This lovingly produced album is the perfect companion for many things: a candle-lit dinner, appreciating a beautiful painting, retrospection, a drink in a bar, a ride in a car, gazing at scenery from afar... the possibilities are endless.
Generally, the problem with remaking well-known songs is that playing the tune, give and take some rephrasing or improvisation, is not enough. To impress, the arrangement, playing, and overall production has to be inspired and tight. In this respect, Regina delivers. It is unfortunate that there are some moments on this album which sound a tad "too easy" or, for lack of a better word, pedestrian. But given the overall substance of this album, those moments are easily overlooked.
For those familiar with the original classical works on this album, they would surely appreciate and marvel at how Regina manages to make songs that are tough to remake, sound so gloriously refreshing. Like a breeze, caressing and loving you, this album is a god-sent.
Regina Carter is Fantastic!.......2006-04-19
This is one of the most beautiful collections of classical jazz in the world. The music is beyond words. Every song speaks to my soul. It is one cd that everyone needs to add to their music collection.

Relaxing Healing.......2007-05-06
If relaxing is naturally healing to our bodies, minds, and spirits, this CD does exactly that.
Beautiful and soothing..........2007-04-11
... are two words that perfectly describe the music on this cd. Tom Barabas outdid himself on this one. I have a habit of playing good music before retiring to bed each night in order to calm myself and clear my head and this is now my current favorite. Can't say enough about the lovely piano renditions of classical favorites. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed!

Soothing music.......2007-07-17
I listen to this music before I fall asleep, it is so beautiful and calming after a long busy day, I fall asleep to the notes of the harp. I think my dreams are even affected in a good way. I recommend this for anyone who has trouble sleeping.
The selections are wonderful and the harpist is amazing.
SOMETHING TO HARP ABOUT!!!.......2000-10-27
Here's a quality potpourri waiting to be listened to. Romantic and modern. Unknown and immediately familiar. Sonatas. Sundries. Reductions of piano works. Something for everyone who loves music, a beautifully and cogently blended mix played with sublime grace and appeal by harpist Naoko Yoshino, supported by a warmly detailed sound image.
In her hands, repertoire staples, such as the Spohr and Rosetti, remain charming still and though one may cavil a bit at the inclusion of the requisite "Clair de lune" of Debussy (or, I suppose, it could have been "The Girl With the Flaxen Hair," instead), this, too, pleases. Newer delights include the beautiful Casella Sonata for Harp, Prokofiev's "Prelude," Renie's "Andante religioso," and Damase's "Sicilienne." Then, of course, there's the gorgeous Faure "Impromptu."
THE HEALING HARP. A better name for this gracious compilation doesn't exist, and it offers an immediate way to relax, unwind or merely contemplate. There's something so peaceful about the resonance of the harp, so therapeutic, so calming; it makes the worries of this modern day frenzy slough off.
Naoko Yoshino has the magic touch.
[Running time: 69:02]
THE MOST RELAXING HARP RECORDING EVER!.......1999-08-14
If you like relaxing classical music this is a must! Mrs Yoshino is a master of the Harp. I wish that more music from her were available.

A big thank you to the Gordon Brothers..........2007-08-05
...for another great musical experience!! I fell in love with the first of this series and have been waiting to hear the second in this series. This album is just as good as the first, if not better. I enjoy the long versions of the songs for yoga sessions and the shorter versions for a quick wind-down at the end of the day. If you end up enjoying this album as much as I do, check out another favorite of mine: Soothing Sanctuary.
Exceptional for Love-making.......2003-02-08
This is far and away both my wife and my favorite CD for making love. Incredibly romantic, gentle and soothing, it has the ability to really heighten and prolong our intimate encounters assisting to transport us to new heights of ecstacy. We have been Tantric practitioners for over 10 years and this blissfully relaxing musical adventure consistantly accompanies our most passionate times together. Thank you again David & Steve Gordon for continuing to deliver inspired, fresh, heartfelt music that exhalts the soul.
Relaxing.......2000-02-11
I am a fan of the Gordon's and find their music inspiring, moving, and relaxing. Their drum music is far the best score that they play, although this CD is on a different plane, it is still worth the purchase. Enjoy it!
excellent for peace of mind.......1999-10-01
This CD is excellent for calming you at the end of a hectic day!!! VERY relaxing, especially if you enjoy nature noises, in particular waterfalls.

Soothing Sounds for the Stressed-Out.......2004-06-13
On the back of this CD it states this music is by "pioneer sound healers". I'm aware of the therapeutic effects that music can possess but I've never heard of "sound healers" before. I won't argue, I'll take their word for it. One thing I do know - this is incredibly beautiful and effective music for meditating, relaxing and falling asleep.
Some numbers contain the serene bliss of nature sounds right up front combined with soothing melodies while others keep the ocean, wind and whatever else softly layered in the background. A few more numbers are accompanied by whispery female vocals. All the tracks flow together nicely without any abrupt changes in mood.
On a few occasions I've listened to this CD while working on the computer - right now is a good example - and have noticed less tension in my neck and shoulders and my breathing slower and deeper. Anything that succeeds at the demanding task of coaxing my twitchy little brain into an even partial state of tranquility truly deserves my highest recommendation.
Musical Healing is Profoundly Powerful.......2002-11-05
As an energetic healer for over 15 years I am quite aware of the profound influence that subtle energies can have in terms of providing general healing effects. This release from Sequoia Records contains an extraordinary compilation of the most soothing and meditative tracks from the very best of their label artists, perfectly sequenced into a beautifully fluid and peaceful journey that uplifts and nourishes the soul. When I put this on for my client's sessions the music really assists in melting their tensions away and creates a wonderful sound environment within which to do my healing work. I especially like the two new tracks from the Gordon brothers, Healing Passage and Healing Ocean and was delighted to find Sophia's Sweet Surrender contained on the release. The CD is rounded out well with fantastic tracks from Gary Stadler (one of my favorite Sequoia artists), Zingaia and Solaria. All in all Musical Healing is an incredibly harmonious, gorgeously balanced and profoundly powerful album. Take two tracks and forget about needing to call your doctor.
Musical Healing is a Journey to the Healing Heart.......2002-01-08
This compilation album from the folks at Sequoia Records comes with several unexpected gifts, chief among them that the exquisitely sensuous singer Sophia has joined the Sequoia family. Her "Sweet Surrender" remains a particular favorite, and I'm delighted that it appears on Musical Healing. Other gifts include three previously unreleased tracks "Twin Souls" by Solaria, and "Healing Passage" and Healing Ocean" by David and Steve Gordon.
Many of the tracks on Musical Healing include lushly textured nature sounds with bird songs, waves, and running water weaving in and out. Gary Stadler, Stephannie, Zingaia and Deborah Martin all have tracks on the album, making Musical Healing a great introduction to the softer side of Sequoia Records. Flute, harp, piano, guitar and angelic vocals join the nature sounds, creating a stress-free atmosphere conducive to massage, meditation, yoga, Reiki, and other healing modalities. Profoundly relaxing and spiritually uplifting, Musical Healing is a journey to the healing heart.

River Dawn: Piano Meditations.......2007-07-13
Delightful arrangement. Soothing music for massage. Volume of this copy very poor. I must turn my CD volume control high in order to hear it.
Modern-day Satie .......2006-12-17
I have been scouring for music to use during healing imagery sessions. I wanted something quiet, clear and fresh. Music that could stand on its own but not overwhelm or bore. This album is perfect. It is lyrical, uncomplicated, and fills an hour without breaks in between. I also find myself listening to it at other times. With candlight, sets a calming mood.
Great!.......2006-04-26
I listen to this CD all the time, especially when I've had a stressful day.
Nice, but not quite right for bodywork sessions.......2006-03-20
This is a sweet, quiet album, however, it doesn't quite work for a massage therapy or other bodywork sessions. While the music itself is not intrusive, there are occasional "bum" and off notes that filter in through the hour-long piece that can be distracting in a quiet bodywork session. While this would not be a problem if the music is just serving as background sound as you do other things, in a massage, a client's mind looks to the music for calm and focus. For many, music is an essential component of the relaxation response during a massage. I used this with a number of my regular clients and they each were distracted or jarred when an off note tumbled by. I certainly understand that one can't be perfect over an hour-long performance, but I find this unsuitable for massage for that reason.
Masterpiece!.......2006-03-19
River Dawn moves me. I often play it while working, while relaxing, while dining, and many other occasions. This disc is passionate, romantic, and soothing. This disc would fit nicely in anyone's collection....check it out.
