I have Tesh's Sax by the Fire, Sax on the Beach and Monterey Nights; I was not sure what to expect with this release. I have to honestly say that I was so surprised at how qualitatively different this compilation is in terms of song selection and overall production.

The guitar takes the lead and is every bit as seductive and sultry as the model on the cover. Great albumn to listen to while winding down, on a long drive, or sipping some herb tea.

This is a timeless masterpiece of both uptempo and mellow guitar masters mixed with orchestration or not, electric and acoustic.
If this CD was a record album, then I would have worn out the grooves. Highest marks, even among my massive CD collection. Buy this album if you like guitar music.

5 out of 5 stars Not your typical John Tesh CD.......2002-05-07

My past experience with John Tesh CDs have been beautiful but painfully slow tunes with a super hyper praise song thrown in the middle. This CD is not like that -- the tempos keep you moving, yet the music can still remain in the background. It is a perfect CD for work or entertaining dinner guests!

Ok, I know that there are some that gag at the very thought of purchasing a John Tesh CD and while this particular disc has not turned me into a Tesh groupie, I must say it is very well done.
Like other reviewers, I was looking for a relaxing disc to listen to as background music in my office. I set out to find something that was in-between New Age and Classical, but that fell a little short of Smooth Jazz. Somehow, I stumbled upon this disc. I was, of course, somewhat skeptical in that I thought Tesh was a pianist or sax player or a wannabie on those instruments. I took a chance on one of the used CD's at about 6 bucks. To my surprise, the CD was just what I was looking for! It's melodic, well composed and Tesh's playing is, well, pretty darn good.
I find myself listening to it almost daily.
If you're looking for a CD for the quite moments, look no further. While it is not great or likely to become the new rage, it is worthy of a listen.

This album is a combination of some very popular songs you might know. It is arranged for the guitar and it is very inspirational. However, some songs are a little boring. I like the last song and the first songs. To bad there is know pianos in this album. :)

Janos Starker is undoubtedly on of the best cellists of our time, and his technique is effortless on all of these virtuoso selections. Not only is his execution flawless, he is one of a few artists who can make their individual styles come out beautifully in a recording. His tone is strong and compelling in all of the selections, never forced but also never obsessed with smoothing over every trace of an individual performance. As a result the recording has a wonderfully spontaneous and solid flavor. Highlights are David Popper's Hungarian Rhapsody and the Falla Danse Rituelle. Unfortunately, it is true that many of these virtuoso pieces simply do not hold the listener time and time again as do, for example, the Brahms cello sonatas or the Dvorak concerto. So though you may listen to this recording many times (and get to love Janos Starker's playing in the process) also buy his recording of the Dvorak.

The Idiot's Guide to Calssical Music is an awesome Cd for those people who want to have a tiny sample of all the great classical compositions. Track 61 and 63 are my favorite.

5 out of 5 stars Mega-Sampler! This really does have 99 tracks!.......2002-03-20

Yes, this CD really does have 99 tracks. How do they do it? Each is about a minuet long. Some are longer, some are shorter, but you get the micro-essential moments of the music.

If you like burning your own CDs, then this is a great source for intra-track fillers, along the lines of They Might Be Giants' "Apollo 18" album, which has all of those short tracks on the end. The idea is to put your CD player on shuffle, so the short tracks get mixed in with the bona fide songs. The result being a very unusual album.

The booklet gives an explanation of the track, where you heard it (i.e. the Warner Brother's Cartoons, or on famous films), and where you can get the full piece of music. So it's a mega sampler CD.

I can honestly say that this CD is a great gift for the friend who has everything.

Take it for what it is, a clever and useful GUIDE to classical music. No, it is NOT an uncut rendition of Beethoven's 9th symphony. It IS a cd that will jog your memory. You have heard many of the tunes presented here, but not always knowing what the work was. This is your chance to catch up with all the great classical music you have been exposed to. Cheap too.

This CD only contains 30-60 second long snippets of each of the pieces. It could be a teaching tool but is not something you can just put on to listen. It does contain reference to popular TV and Film works that contain the music.

Yngwie cuts loose on his first live album. Perfectly capturing the talented band at his disposal as well as the man himselfs guitar skills this is a good buy for the Yngwie fan - as is the live video of the same tour. A quick perusal of the set list shows that this material is heavily drawn from the Trilogy and Odyssey records with the instrumental staples of Black Star and Far Beyond the Sun thrown in from the debut.

I guess it all depends on your view of live albums - they rarely convert the non believer but for Yngwie fans this is probably essential. Both Malmsteen and Joe Lynn Turner sound great in their respective roles and the tunes form a pretty strong set. Of course this isn't the whole gig, Yngwie at the time bemoaning his record companys decision to only release a single disc, rather than a double.

There are no massive overdubs on this release, the crowd noise is at acceptable volumes and lastly Yngwie should be congratulated for going to the effort of touring what was still the USSR back then. A whole bunch of bureaucratic obstacles were overcome to get the tour happening and being given permission to record and film in Leningrad at the time can't of been easy. Apparently the tour ended up playing to over 250,000 people all up.

A great buy for fans, a strong live set played with passion.

It's the Eighties, so be prepared to have fun listening to some excessive axework in this great live record. Yngwie plays here with the intensity you expect from a guitar hero of his magnitude, up to burning his guitar out. His performance is passionate and brilliant, even when he missed out some notes here and there - but I love that: he didn't hide his errors in order to retain the actual "taste" of the live show, and I think that's a very honest attitude.

The guy unarguably is one of the greatest guitar players of all times - yes, he is; in spite of any critic, any rumor (or fact) about his ego, any repetitive playing or anything else. :-) This album demonstrates how good he actually is, as Yngwie proudly shows all his abilities off, from the purely neoclassic shredding in "Black Star" and "Trilogy Suite", to the explicit quotes to Paganini, Bach, Beethoven and the likes all the way along, to the frantic riffing in any of his own songs with vocals, to the bluesly soloing in the Hendrix's song "Spanish Castle Magic" and in "Spacebo Blues" - at whose end he also amuses the crowd with some great feedback and guitar effects.

Furthermore, the choice of sung pieces is great. This CD contains many of the best vocal tracks of Yngwie's early solo career - mainly from "Trilogy" and "Odyssey". Joe Lynn Turner's mellow vocals seamlessly fit into Yngwie's style, yet doing far better than Mark Boals when singing those songs from the "Trilogy" album. The production honors his voice, and that's fair to his amazing performance.

Lynn is a great songwriter too. "Odyssey" (the studio album to whose tour this gig belongs to) includes a bunch of amazing material. That material is showcased in "Trial by fire" in a clean manner. I still think that the Yngwie/Lynn combination was a killer one from the songwriting point of view - just tell me: do you *really* believe that those cheesy and ridiculous love lyrics are specially worst than those others lyrics about warriors, dragons, knights, swords and kings? C'mon! :-)

By the way, going back to Joe Lynn Turner, I'd want to point out some few things about him in this review. This vocalist has been widely criticized because he aims commercialism too much, because he's mellow, because he's not aggressive enough, because he doesn't like wailing, etc. Maybe all that is true, but he has one of the greatest, cleanest, most perfectly tuned and most melodic voices ever heard in the rock genre. He also has a superb tone and a truly wide vocal range - listen carefully to his interpretation of "Liar". Isn't it GREAT? In addition, he is a master of dynamics - the enormous load of feeling that he delivers in "Dreaming" says it all! And he doesn't miss a single note in this album! This album witnesses that he can perform live as a genuine vocal god. Honestly, I believe he deserves much more recognizance for the flawlessly job he does here and in every band where he has performed (including Rainbow and Deep Purple).

Back to "Trial by Fire", this album contains an excellent choice of Yngwie Malsmteen's "hits" (if so can be said) and astonishing guitar pyrotechnics complemented with vocals of the highest quality. I strongly recommend this CD even for Yngwie newbies. Hard rockers will appreciate it too. So, go for it NOW, put it into your CD player, fasten your seatbelts and enjoy! The trip will pay off, I guarantee you that.

What you'll find about Yngwie J. Malmsteen is, that what he says is true: when he gets in front of a sold out crowd, watch out! His playing is more intensified live than in the studio, if you can belive that. The shining moment on this live set is, of course, the guitar solo, with the trilogy suite in there. By the time you get to the end of his solo and hear what sounds like Satan dishing out some massive melodic feedback, you just shake your head and wonder how he does it. Incredible live performance of his earlier stuff here. Don't let this one get by you. And you'll definitely give it up for the cover of Jimi Hendrix's, Spanish Castle Magic: killer job on that cover. 5 STAR MALMSTEEN RATING FROM SCRAGGY'S TOMB OF POWER METAL, USA.

Me imagino que originalmente salió en LP de 12" pero yo lo llegué
a conocer ya en CD. Por ser una grabación al aire libre se pierde un poco de fuerza. Es un buen trabajo si se considera que fue grabado en Leningrado, territorio de la exURSS.

    This soundtrack was an education in the blues for Warming By The Devil's Fire, a movie where a 12-year old sent down to Mississippi to be baptized by one uncle, is instead picked up by his fun-loving Uncle Buddy, who educates him in the blues and takes him around, showing him what he is supposed to be saved from. The majority of songs here carry through the theme in the movie that gospel and blues were separate, one being more divine, the other seen as the devil's music. That changed when artists like Ray Charles and Sam Cooke made soul music as a combination of the two. Highlights:

    Among the earliest tracks on here is "See See Rider" from the Mother of the Blues herself, Ma Rainey, the power in her voice apparent despite the scratching on this early recording. Louis Armstrong's on trumpet here.

    Son House's rough guitar style is in evidence in "Death Letter" about a man receiving news of his love's death and seeing her on the cooling floor and lowered into the earth.

    A small snatch of Billie Holiday's "I'm A Fool To Want You" was used in the movie, this being taken from her final album Lady In Satin. The lush string arrangements make this number a bit of an anomaly amidst the country and electric blues predominating this compilation.

    Mississippi John Hurt's soft voice and wandering folky guitar make "Big Leg Blues" one of the standout cuts here. The Memphis Jug Band's harmony vocals in "K.C. Moan" is yet another flavour of blues due to the instrumentation, which includes a kazoo.

    And then the potent voice of the Empress of the Blues. Bessie Smith's "Muddy Water" was the song Junior, the 12-year old in the movie, is dancing with a grown woman, while his Uncle Buddy has another sweet thing slow-dancing with him. A prime example of city blues, with its piano, wind, and brass. That's Fletcher Henderson on piano and Coleman Hawkins on clarinet.

    "Cross My Heart" by Sonny Boy Williamson (Rice Miller) tells the message that if you cross your heart to someone, you're not supposed to tell a lie. Willie Dixon's on bass and Otis Spann on piano.

    Muddy Waters' "You Can't Lose What You Ain't Never Had" and his trademark sound is the song that introduced every episode of the Blues series. He gets help from Willie Dixon on bass and pianist Otis Spann.

    Robert Johnson's represented twice here, "Sweet Home Chicago" while Elmore James does a blistering electric version of "Dust My Broom."

    A ragtime-like piano runs through W.C. Handy's "Beale Street Blues," which is a tribute to the street that was home to Memphis, TN's blues scenes, sung here in an Irish-like brogue.

    Despite the assumed separation between gospel and blues, Sister Rosetta Tharpe didn't hesitate to get into a boogie-woogie type of music in "Up Above My Head." This song is also on the Red White & Blues soundtrack, also in the series.

    Mildred Jones' risque "Mr. Thrill" is made more boisterous by the Pluma Davis band. When she sings "my daddy has a long long cadillac" and "and when he puts it in my garage/rides so easy cause he keeps his battery charged," she's definitely not talking auto mechanics. Very hot song for 1954. So this is what they mean by the devil's fire! Whew!

    John Lee Hooker's stark and fatalistic "I'll Never Get Out Of These Blues Alive" closes the album. Muddy Waters helps out on guitar and Otis Spann on piano.

    In terms of the soundtrack being consistent with the songs featured in the movie, there must've been a chock full of songs in the movie for at least another full CD. Songs by Mamie Smith, Ida Cox, and the naughty Lucille Bogan, as well as others, are conspicuous by their absence. This focuses more on earlier and original material rather than new renditions specially made, and as such, has a richer flavour than some of the others in the series.

    A great soundtrack to accompany a great series on the blues! Out of the seven, I consider this one to be particularly good due to the range and scope of artists and songs included!

    Including Sister Rosetta Tharpe makes this an extra special treat!

    If you're a blues fan, I'd highly recommend this release!
