A concept album about gigantic household appliances taking over the world? No such luck. As the images of Hank Williams, Bob Dylan and Sun-era Elvis floating in the background might indicate, this Nashville band is strictly old school, singing about unemployed riverboat workers, covering Woody Guthrie and plucking banjos like there was no tomorrow. Produced by David Rawlings, Big Iron World boasts the expected barnstormers ("Cocaine Habit") and late-night meditations ("God's Got It") alongside a handful of folkie sing-a-longs ("Down Home Girl") and a thoroughly unexpected reference to Karl Rove. And where else are you going to hear songstress Gillian Welch banging away on the drums? --Aidin Vaziri
Customer Reviews:
This aging fanboy..........2007-06-25
loves Old Crow Medicine Show, and this album is another winning entry! "I Hear Them All" is worth the price of admission by itself, but there are other choice bits; "Cocaine Habit" "Down Home Girl" and "My Good Gal" stand out, as well as the tongue-in-cheek (I think ;) "New Virginia Creeper".
Cool Beans.......2007-06-08
I really have enjoyed this CD. The music is invigorating and the lyrics are funny. I have just ordered another one to send to my son-in-law!
yowch.......2007-05-12
Good god, these guys are overrated. Hipster old time music at its worst. They sure would look good in a Details magazine spread, though...
love it.......2007-04-01
i love OCMS and there music keeps getting better and better. if you love their last album, buy this one.
It's been growing on me.......2007-02-21
Having only really listened to the most recent previous album, I didn't know what to think of Big Iron World at first; it seemed quite a bit more bluesy than O.C.M.S., and I wasn't sure the change was for the better. After a dozen or so times through, though, I've got to say, they've got an uncanny ability to bring even a reluctant audience around.
There are a few songs on the album that I still don't love: Down Home Girl has a pretty monotone, repetitive sound; Union Maid is too obviously a throw-back; and Bobcat Tracks is just hokey.
Now that I got my complaints out, though, what a great album. My Good Gal is reminiscent of my favorite Louvin Brothers song (Knoxville Girl); New Virginia Creeper demands dancing; and I Hear Them All is up there with the best of American folk political protest songs. Just a great time, great musicians, and I wish they'd come play live in New England.

A mixed collection of movie music.......2006-02-23
For the price, this CD is a great bargain. The musical selections, as you might expect, are mixed in quality ranging from extraordinary to so so, the balance being worthwhile and interesting. Sonically the CD is excellent.

Seemless union of Indigenous and Jazz music........2001-05-30
When the heart and mind open and express it's true feelings in no matter what country or culture, nothing but pure art flows out to a receptive one. That is the case here with some of the most Soulful music I have ever felt! One of the favorite cd's to play on The Blues Power show and Jazz show at 1490 KOTY AM Yakima Nation Radio in southcentral Washington state.
Excellent CD - one of my favorite Nakai CDs.......2000-01-14
A little while back I had the fortune of listening to the Carlos Nakai Quartet when they played outside under some trees at a native american art sale being held at the U of A. I was already a fan of Nakai's solo pieces... After they played a selection from this album (Crow Canyon) I knew I'd have to jump up and buy a copy of Big Medicine. I was not disappointed. Lots of great music on this Album - several favorites. I'm not sure if the short clips available for online play really show how good the music is on this album.
Jazz at its Native American Best.......1999-11-04
Being a large fan of R. Carlos Nakai, I am very familiar with much of his work. This is one fun and fine piece of work and shouldn't be missed.

Customer Reviews:
Difficult Indeed.......2001-06-15
Dr. Strangely Strange is another of those remarkably unique bands that never seems to find a significant audience. Their earlier recordings were full of humor and a lot of their laughter made it onto the vinyl. Both "Kip of the Serenes" and "Heavy Petting" were solidly in the folk genre, covering the ground largely staked out by The Incredible String Band at one end and Fairport Convention at the other. In fact, Dave Mattacks contributed some outstanding drumming on "Heavy Petting", and the Doctors did some work with ISB. Unlike ISB, the Stranglies did not seem to be bothered with the pretensions of creating high art. They were having a good time, and the feelings come straight through each song. Appropriately subtitled "The Difficult Third Album", "Alternative Medicine" is their first release in almost 30 years. It preserves the humor and charm of their earlier recordings as well as their remarkable ability to write and play beautiful melodies. Not many bands bother with melody any more, but these guys do, and do so better than most. Many of the tunes, especially "Darksome Burn", are not as easy to classify as their earlier songs, and are all the more appealing for it. More mature writing and high production values also set this release apart from the earlier work. It is great to hear them still writing, still playing after all this time. In an industry obsessed with target marketing and classification, Dr. Strangely Strange continues to dance to their own tunes. Buy this CD and you're buying something distinctive. Then learn to love this music. You'll be better for it.
It's different, but it's strangely strange alright !.......1999-02-15
Dr. Strangely Strange first came to my attention by means of the Incredible String Band records - to several of those records the Strangelies have contributed. A Strangely song ("Strings in the earth and Air") was even included on Williamson's "Myrrh" ! The first record I bought was "Heavy Petting", and later I found the cd-version of "Kip of the Serenes". I even had a chance to see them play live when they performed at the Incredible String Band Convention in Leeds (1995) and talk a bit to Ivan Pawle, who said to me that the cd version of "Kip" was no good: it's at a lower speed than the original. Hope the record company will amend that.
As I've seen them live in 1995, I already knew that their music had changed considerably: much less "naive" and a much more electric approach, like a regular rock band. Nevertheless, I was a little bit disappointed when I heard this record for the first time, just hoping for songs like those on "Kip". But, as time passed, I began to like and even to love this gentle and modest record, which has a lot of real goodies on it. The initial disappointment has definitely gone, and I would recommend this record to anybody !
There are some lovely instrumentals on this album (like "Lilty's") and some really great songs ("Darksome Burn" especially). As the songs are written by different band members the mood swings from one end to another, but it's a pleasing whole. Interesting detail is the appearance of Gary Moore, who, when very young, already played a part in the making of "Heavy Petting" (most notably on the gentle and beautiful "Sign on my mind").
I've played this record to peope who didn't know the band and who are not even remotely interested in the hippie era, and their reactions have been quite favourable - it seems that Dr. Strangely Strange has emerged as strange as they were, but ready for a new era.

Slightly harder to find recordings, Doc sounds great!.......2003-09-21
As usual, Doc sounds beautiful on this album, and also manages to cover a wide range of music, ranging from rock/poppish material to big band jazz to classical. This shows what a versatile player Doc is. These recordings are mostly from the 1970's so there is a bit of funk, but also a lot of orchestral playing and that influence is quite apparent throughout the album. He really tears through "Brass Roots" with some very accurate pinpoint playing. The tune is funky, and has some really nice trumpet work. "Good Medicine" is a GREAT latin tune, and Doc tears through it on his solo, there is also great organ work and percussion throughout. However, the highlight of this album is without question in my opinion J.S. Bach's "Come Sweet Death", with an amazing solo from Doc. There is also a fugue near the end followed by an astounding cadenza by Doc. I was speechless by the end.
However, sadly to say, after those first three songs, this album starts to lose steam, aside from a tasty "Godfather Theme". The "Rhapsody For Now" is very well-played but is not exactly my cup of tea. Neither is "Liberia". However, this is still a very good record from one of the world's greatest trumpet players. Recommended for all fans of trumpet, but you should check out some of Doc's other recordings first.
Incredible!.......1999-01-10
This CD could be Doc's best work ever. The combination of his incredible skills and the amount of music packed in this CD attest to Good Medicine's greatness! Good Medicine has every kind of music there is- from fast to slow, jazz to classical. If you are looking for a Doc Sevreinsen CD, this one is a must-buy!
Wow!!!.......1998-08-07
A combination of three recordings released in the early 70's, this set shows why Severinsen is considered to be at the pinnacle of his profession.
The first four tunes are from the original Brass Roots album. Brass Roots is real 'in your face' playing which demonstrates this trumpeter's outstanding tone, range and technique. Other tunes are less amazing but always played with the highest degree of sensitivity and musicality.
