5 out of 5 stars This is the BEST.......2006-06-23

I've got every Terri Hendix CD, and with each one I think - Wow! This is the best ever! Playful, introspective, thoughtful, funny - with music and lyrics complimenting each other to a 'T'. This is one of my favoite CD's of all time - Can't wait for the next one!

3 out of 5 stars Some Very Good Songs on a Misfire Album.......2005-12-18

Like many folk and indie artists in the last few years, Terri Hendrix has been moved by the muse to craft a social/political album. And like many social/political albums in the last few years, this one has some very good songs, and clunks in between.

If you've heard tracks like "Breakdown" and "Monopoly," you know that Terri Hendrix has some sharp, incisive views. She has the ability to cut through the chatter and get right to the heart of what's wrong in our world today. But if you listen to the album cuts that haven't been released to radio and podcasts, tracks like "It's About Time" and "Judgement Day," the lyrical content becomes leaden and declarative. She feels the need to spell everything out, like she can't quite trust her audience to follow what she's saying and come to their own conclusions. It's as though she lapses into a professorial mentality, lecturing to students who are hunched over their composition books taking notes.

Sonically, this album is sterling. Hendrix doesn't abandon the guitar-driven Texas country sound that has characterized most of her music to date. But she does incorporate a little more of a peppy pop aspect that steers her ringing voice into more Mariah and less Loretta Lynn. Reading over what I've just written, I realize that could sound like an insult, but I don't mean it that way. Rather, Terri uses the mainstream like a buffet, picking and choosing what serves the very individual hybrid sound she's trying to create.

Late in the album, she slackens on the political drive, and a sturdier, more organic lyric crive comes through. I admit to not liking Luka Bloom's version "I Need Love" from a few years ago, but Terri Hendrix makes it her own, and it works well. "Quiet Me" and "Long Ride Home" were both written by other artists, but Hendrix makes them her own, adding a welcome dose of personal introspection at the end of the disc.

Fans of Terri Hendrix will find plenty to like about this CD. So will fans of indie folk and lo-fi country. Even the weaker political songs have good musical resonance, including some violin and cello, and supporting vocals from Ruthie Foster. This album isn't a future classic, and it isn't even going to be remembered as one of Hendrix's better efforts. But it is going to be heard and remembered, and that's what really matters.

5 out of 5 stars She's the nicest person in the world........2004-11-11

She has a dynamic voice, great songs, and a great personality. She is very witty, and her songs showcase her wit well. If you like a great variety of music, you'll likely enjoy this album -- her diverse interests shine through brightly. It's a great cd (as are all of her others). I even like her live cd's, which is entirely out-of-character for me. Hope to see you at another PA show!

5 out of 5 stars Totally engaging.......2004-10-20

This is my first Terri Hendrix album but it won't be my last. Every song is a winner. She's totally engaging with a voice that draws you in, first rate music, and lyrics that are deep and personal.

5 out of 5 stars Terri Rocks.......2004-10-13

This is a great CD. Every single song is incredible. Terri's songwriting skills are only eclipsed by the way she sings these songs. If you have a chance to see her live DO NOT MISS IT. She is even better live.

The first release in the Limitless Luxury Collection is a high-style collaboration between the lauded lifestyle-design magazine Wallpaper and the Seattle-based label Sweet Mother. Punctuated with surround-sound comfort and panache, Mach 1.5 promotes itself as "a compilation to play while getting dressed." Despite its prescribed listening conditions, the collection showcases some of the best trip-hop, acid jazz, and electro-lounge artists of the day, promising to warm any interior with sounds that rise to accompany the morning routine. With an aural shower of cascading rhythms, percolating melodies, and lustrous vocal treatments, virtually all tracks shimmer in a daybreak glow. Sampled embellishments add elements of funky bossa nova and raga influences to further the moods. Standout tracks by UFO, Thievery Corporation, Doris Day, and Jazzanova augment these diverse styles with elegance. Deviating from downtempo formulas, serene compositions by Air and Ryuichi Sakamoto round out the mix with tracks bordering on Muzak moments. But ultimately, Sakamoto's blissful orchestration adds the perfect finishing touch with simple melodies and graceful string arrangements. To relax in sophistication, these tunes can play on repeat long after donning the day's perfect wear. --Lucas Hilbert

5 out of 5 stars Perfect cafe music.......2005-10-16

When I originally bought this CD, it was on a whim, without a preview listen, and without too much thought. I soon came to love it, and then started realizing that it (or at least the tracks from it) were being played in all of my favorite cafes, coffee-shops and even Jazz bars/lounges.

Perfect music to have playing in the background while meeting someone new, enjoying a lazy Sunday afternoon with a coffee and a book, or even schmoozing with the beautiful people at a funky lounge bar with a martini.

Slide right on in and enjoy.

    1 out of 5 stars Mach 1.5 (Wallpaper).......2001-05-17

Its very subjective. As a web designer, I find the music like backgrd loops in a shockwave movie. If u are not into funk or hip tunes, try avoid it.

    5 out of 5 stars Smooth.......2000-06-09

This album is 100% hip. A compilation of covers and comtemporary tunes, Limitless Luxury takes you on the groove train to Funksville. Whether you're sitting back in some trippy purple velvet lounge chair, or up and shmoozing with friends over way too, elegantly dressed cocktails, you'll be equally entertained. The phenomenal list of artist reads like a who's who of modern tunes, there's bound to be something that will satisfy all groovy funksters out in music land. Put it on and see where it takes you!

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Collection.......1999-11-30

Just amazing -- it's a superb compilation of several similar genres, and more. It's chic, lively, stylish. It puts in so much 'luxury' into the electronic genre.
If you're a fan of the wallpaper magazine you'll know what I mean, it's a perfect reflection of and complement to it.
Even if you're not into this type of music, but are a open-minded music fan looking to expand your collection, this is a must. It's perfect for both active listening and background tunes.

    5 out of 5 stars limitless wonder.......1999-09-26

This CD is wonderful. If you can bypass -- or buypass -- the ad-copy aesthetics of the magazine, the CD stands by itself as a very cool compilation of mellow, lush songs.

5 out of 5 stars "Sunshine" for the soul!.......2005-04-26

This CD is liquid sunshine. It made me feel so good to listen to it. It reminds me of '60's music, kind of like Donovan (do you remember him??) . It is innocent, sparkling, iridescent, and refreshing, like sunlight on water. It is like a very needed breath of fresh air!!! I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Superb Pop Album.......2005-03-04

Wallpaper For The Soul is an incredible album of pop music that delivers a great collection of songs that feature catchy melodies and intelligent lyrics that resonate with a wide range of emotions. For example, a song like "Happy End" starts slowly with a piano accompanying the lyrics, followed by a beautiful guitar melody. A sad mood defines the first half of the song as Xavier Boyer sings "I know how the story ends, we are so predictable, but each time, your love for me, dies a little more". The song picks up near the end with a more upbeat outlook and ends with the words, "cause I know you understand, that we all deserve, just a happy end". Another favorite line is from the song "Open Book", "It makes you wish you were lost and never found, but your eyes are like an open book".

Other songs feature violins, flutes, and horn sections that help create upbeat or airy moods. There is a wide range of songs that can easily relate to how you're feeling, whether you're a bit down because of a romantic breakup or happy on a sunny day. Each listener will find a song that makes a personal connection. I highly recommend this album to any fan of smooth, relaxing pop music.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificient Piece of Work--*pure excellence*.......2004-12-15

If I was traveling in my convertible on the coast with the summer breeze blowing through this is one of the albums (and maybe the only)I would bring. This is not pop, but acoustic excellence. A refreshing sound from a talented supergroup.

Check out their other works also.

I enjoyed about 80% of the music-which is exceptional for me.

5 out of 5 stars Warm and Wonderful.......2004-11-10

I bought this CD based on the reviews here and I am so glad I did. This is a rare and wonderful complilation of music that simply makes you feel good. It is experimental in the same way the classic Beach Boys' Pet Sessions were - innovative and refreshing and nothing like you've ever heard before. Xavier Boyer's vocals are amazing - like audio sunshine for your soul. My favorite tracks are the pop-masterpiece "1,000 Times" and the lovely "Fun Fair" - I could play them over and over until the CD wears out and still not tire of them.

I can't wait for Tahiti 80's next CD to come out.

    5 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY AMAZING.......2004-02-13

Ok, I'm going to keep this short because if you want the LONG VERSION, check out another review (there's a novel-length review on the site here somewhere).

I love this album. It's a new sound, it's got a refreshing tone, and it transcends the lines of genre nicely. The songs have a refreshing pop sensibility with a touch of almost techno sound to them at times. They also have intelligent and interesting lyrics.

This and all the other Tahiti 80 Albums are things that I really do enjoy, but I can admit that they're not for everyone. I have numerous friends who don't like how mellow this album is, but I'd have to say that usually, it's the least open-minded people I know with regards to music, and/or the ones who have tastes that make me want to vomit.

I guess you could say that if you're into the music that you regularly hear on the "rock" stations, you should look somewhere else. Comparitively, this is a somewhat experimental pop album, but when i mean pop, I'm talking about high quality, poppy music, not the generic "lovey-dovey n'sync/brittney spears/New kids on the block/I think I just puked on my shoes" pop. Really, this music to some extent invokes the Beatles to me in that it's experimental, not like much of anything else before it, and just fantastically written and performed.

This is just good music and worth checking out.

The great thing about being part of a musical collective is that not only can you draw from the work of your peers for inspiration, you can rely on your peers themselves. As part of Elephant 6, the Apples in Stereo are involved in a symbiotic relationship with such like-minded bands as Olivia Tremor Control and Neutral Milk Hotel. For example, Apples frontman Robert Schneider produced a previous OTC album and OTC controller William Cullen Hart designed the artwork for the Apples' new record, Her Wallpaper Reverie. So it's no surprise that Wallpaper sounds like a more cohesive sequel to OTC's mind-bending Black Foliage. What is surprising is just how vast an improvement it is over the Apples' last sugary pop disc, Tone Soul Evolution. A psychedelic excursion threaded together with chiming, repetitive interludes, the album blends the styles of Revolver-era Beatles with those of Smile-era Beach Boys, resulting in a shimmering pop cocktail that's both crafty and infectious. Only two flaws: the interludes become a tad annoying and the album is only 27 minutes long, leaving the listener begging for more. Fortunately, most CDs have a repeat-play button. --Jon Wiederhorn

    Album Description

1999 album, the follow-up their successful '97 album, 'Tone Soul Evolution'. A return to the fuzzy rock sound of their earlier releases while taking giant steps forward, it contains 15 tracks.

    5 out of 5 stars Imagine!.......2007-05-05

Imagine what it would have sounded like if the Beatles finished recording Sgt. Pepper and then decided to record an album with members of the Beach Boys. No, wait! You don't have to imagine it. Just listen to "Her Wallpaper Reverie"!!! This is a joyful collection of neo-psychedelic tunes that is bouncy, fun and clever from end-to-end.

    5 out of 5 stars great CD.......2007-01-21

this is a great CD, I bought it for my husband who is a huge beatles fan and he loved it!

4 out of 5 stars A very good psychedelic pop EP with three great songs - most should like it - 4.5 stars.......2006-01-09

"Her Wallpaper Reverie" may be a pretty short EP, but it's definitely worth it. The EP has three great psychedelic pop songs ("The Shiney Sea", "Strawberryfire" and "Ruby"), and while the rest aren't as great they're still very good. It's just a very interesting and creative EP. I wouldn't call it a "classic", but genre fans will definitely love every minute of it. The lyrics tend to be pretty pointless, although they can be interesting at times (and catchy - see "Ruby"). The musicianship is very 60's-ish - it could've easily come out in that decade. Indie pop fans will love this, and everyone else will probably like the first three "real" songs on here (the roman numeraled songs are psychedelic experimental instrumentals). For $10.00, though, I don't think it has enough songs on it to warrant a "5". All in all, this is highly recommended!

    Highlights include:
    the entire EP!

3 out of 5 stars Good songs but too few.......2004-10-02

I got this Cd because I liked the two Cds "Fun Trick Noisemaker" and "tone soul evolution" and that I had heard the songs on it were the best so far. When I listened to the Cd I was disappointed, the songs that were there were indeed very good, but there were too few and the Cd was too brief. The Apples attempt to sound like Olivia Tremor Control with the artistic sounds didnt work for such a short EP, and the fact that they all sounded the same. But the songs that are there are very good, heavily influenced by the Kinks and the Beatles. A good Cd but shouldnt be priced over $5.

3 out of 5 stars Too much noodling, not enough songcraft.......2004-06-28

Her Wallpaper Reverie is simultaneously one of the best and worst CDs I've listened to in a long time. How can it be both at once, you're asking? Well, it's rather like this...

On one hand, you have the Apples' trademark ability to synthesize 60s pop down to absolutely brilliant and tasty pop nuggets. "The Shiney Sea" floats by like a lone cloud on a sunny day, "Ruby" almost effortlessly manages to sound both like early Beatles and create a song as catchy as anything the Beatles did in their early days, and there's, of course, the brilliant "Strawberryfire," which almost manages to outdo Lennon's psychadelic sound experiments like "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds."

However, with every brilliant song such as this, there is the horrendous filler. I rather like psychadelia, but the stopgap tracks between songs are pure directionless noodling. None of them start anywhere and most of them end nowhere, leaving you to scratch your head. And that says nothing about the concept of this CD either. Who in their right mind would actually RECORD a CD about what happens when you take a few too many bonghits and stare at the wallpaper for a while?

If The Apples in Stereo had managed to cut the terrible filler tracks, we'd have a lovely 7 song EP as opposed to the bloated 15 track one they released instead. As such, you're going to have to take the good with the bad on this one if you're going to buy it. Otherwise, check out some of the Apples' other CDs first.
