Amazon.com essential recording
Brickman produced this compilation, which brings on board such luminaries as Anne Cochran, Michelle Wright, Janis Ian, Stephen Bishop, and of course Brickman himself. Essentially a collection of ballads on the title subject, Visions of Love doesn't have much variety, though Peabo Bryson's singing on "My Heart Belongs to You" does stand out. Pop-oriented and lyrically composed, the music relies on emotional resonance, which it achieves. --Genevieve Williams

The bad news is that this is Anonymous 4's final recording. The good news is that it's one of their best. Aside from a pair of brief 9th-century chants that flank the main program, the disc focuses on the music of Hildegard von Bingen, the 12th-century Benedictine nun whose liturgical works broke new ground in their visionary texts, rich imagery, and melodic range. The selections here relate to themes associated with the Holy Spirit--the fire of creation, wisdom, the life-giving spirit, and love. The imagery of Hildegard's visionary texts is replete with references to the basic elements--air, earth, fire, and water. The results are boldly original, at least within the restricted confines of chant, which offer compelling listening experiences as performed in the lustrous tones of Anonymous 4. The program includes a pair of Hildegard's most-rhapsodic extended visionary pieces, the consoling "O spirit of fire, bringer of comfort," and "I am the great and fiery power," whose soaring opening musical lines still can shock. Harmonia Mundi, as usual, captures the purity of Anonymous 4's singing in vivid sonics and provides deluxe production values, including a profusely illustrated booklet, with full texts and translations. --Dan Davis

Customer Reviews:
A Wonderful CD .......2007-04-29
I own 13 A-4 discs and this is my second favorite, after On Yoolis Night. The recording sounds a little muddy and they do, uncharacteristically take some liberties with the translations, but .... This was recorded in a real chapel (as were most of their later releases) and the extensive liner notes are, as usual, present. The presentation and delivery are among the best that A-4 have ever done. These 4 ladies each have wonderful voices that blend together magnificently. If you are an A-4 fan, you need to own this.
Great music; interesting group.......2007-01-05
The music of Hildegard Von Bingen is, without question, some of the most important we have from the Middle Ages. This album has a very capable set of performances by Anonymous 4, but the drawback is the very sameness of sound to each and every track. Yes, they sing well, but where is the variety of timbre? Where are the percussion instruments that have been used in other recordings and performances of these works? They could have used some help from some men's voices, too. Otherwise, it's perfectly recorded, but with repeat listenings becomes more trying.
My humble opinion............2005-12-28
I gave this CD an above average rating. I did so because this is the 3rd CD that I have purchased from Anonymous 4 and to be quite honest they all sound the same to me. I personally feel that the style of Hildegard is heavy, crisp, intentional and complicated. It is unique compared to other styles of anicent choral music. Anonymous 4 has a very light, airy almost contemporary feel to whatever they sing. In the CD insert Anonymous 4 goes on to express how they prepared to sing the medeival music in latin with a German accent because that is where Hildegard was from, and that this is how she would have sung her music. But honestly I don't think one can tell. Like I said, this is my third CD from them and they all sound the same. Don't get me wrong ladies. You 4 have gorgeous voices but I have found that the albums by Sequentia that sing in Hildegard's von Bingen tradition to be more authentic. I recommend to those interested to try Chanticles of Extasy by Sequentia or any of Sequentia's albums. You'll understand what I mean after you compare them for yourselves.
Completely beautiful.......2005-11-08
This musical is relaxing uplifting, simple yet complicated. A total mental experience filled with beauty.
The Origins of Fire: Music and Visions of Hildegard von Bingen.......2005-08-14
If you enjoy the music of Anonymous 4, you'll be thouroughly impressed with this presentation of Hildegard's music to God. Excellent is not enough praise for this interpretation.

Folkies Robin and Linda Williams, longtime regulars on Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion radio show, have again teamed up with the program's illustrious host, this time to make one of the most engaging albums of their career. With Keillor producing and suggesting much of the classic country repertoire (Hank Williams, the Louvin Brothers, and Merle Haggard, for example), the Williamses run the emotional gamut of love here--from romantic, to maternal, to spiritual, and even to patriotic. Spare production and exceptional song selection add to the timelessness of the collection, but in places, Linda's understated elegance seems too civilized and pretty for such hard-edged themes as infidelity ("You're Running Wild") and marital bed death ("After the Fire Is Gone"). Yet the husband and wife team redeem themselves over and over, most notably with covers of Hank's "Ramblin' Man," rendered as spooky as a siren of death, and Bruce Springsteen's "If I Should Fall Behind," an astonishing song of unending devotion. Go ahead--give this to someone you love. --Alanna Nash
Customer Reviews:
A hearfelt CD.......2007-02-01
This couple is the real thing. Ramblin Man is the best I ever heard it.
Not all the tunes are blugrass and some are old fasioned American standard ballad. All very high quality.
Old Time at Its Best.......2002-02-28
If you like old time country music, you will surely want this CD in your collection. By "old time", I mean the pre-bluegrass, germinal style that emerged in the 1920's and 1930's.
One of the oldest among the tracks (pre Civil War), "I'll Twine 'Mid The Ringlets", from whose last line the CD title was taken, has special meaning to me. This tune was first recorded by the Carter Family as "Wildwood Flower" in 1928. I was raised in Weber City, Virginia, about 15 miles from the Carter Homestead and this song reminds me of growing up in Poor Valley, between Clinch Mountain and the Holston River. I remember my mother singing Wildwood Flower and playing it on her guitar but I also remember her saying she didn't understand the meaning of some of the words. (The Carter Family evidently recorded a version handed down through an "oral tradition"; in the Carter version, the descriptions of her hair and the flowers in the first verse defy explanation.) My High School band played this tune (and other Carter Family tunes) at pep rallies and football games in the early 70's. Robin and Linda sing the original version (or a version very close to it) of this ballad. The tempo of their arrangement is a little slower than the Carter arrangement, adding to the melancholy of the song, and the musical accompaniment is different, including Robin's harmonica and absent (Maybell's) autoharp. In the solo guitar break, there is no Carter "church lick", which is okay because this arrangement is already a significant departure from the Carter arrangement. Robin's stark, melancholy accompaniment with guitar, harmonica, and harmony vocals and Linda's plain and heartfelt enunciation of the lyrics, in addition to my personal connection with the song, place this track high on my list of favorites.
My favorite track is "If I Should Fall Behind", written in 1992 by Bruce Springsteen; it's a simple song with a great message about marriage and it has outstanding mandolin accompaniment by Peter Ostroushko.
The only track I could have done without is "After The Fire Is Gone", a Conway/Loretta tune that I call "1950's honky tonk" music; it's acoustic but I don't consider it to be appropriate for this collection. One bad track out of 13 ain't bad.
Just take it from this "Wandering Boy", a native of Poor Valley who grew up surrounded by old time country music and who longs to return to "My Clinch Mountain Home" before it's "Too Late", you won't regret buying this CD. I plan to buy a few more of them for gifts.
A Total Pleasure!.......2002-02-21
This latest CD from Robin and Linda Williams is truly wonderful! The variety of styles of music represented here keeps you jumping from country to folk to even bluesy. Their unique (and understandable) version of the Carter Family's classic "Wildwood Flower" is entrancing and beautiful. "Ramblin' Man" is Robin at his best. "Keep the Home Fires Burning" brings a simple and lovely taste of nostalgia, even to one who wasn't around to hear it the first time. This CD is a welcome addition to any collection.

multi-talented.......2005-09-25
Windham Hill Records (Jim Brickman's label) asked Jim to put this compilation album together using various Windham Hill artists. Jim has a great talent for writing for piano and creating beautiful lyrics, but he also has a knack for putting songs and voices together beautifully as he has shown on many of his albums. On this album, Jim shows another of his many talents... the ability to pull together various talents to create a theme.
Jim had a vision for this album and an idea that love is experienced in many different ways. Visions of Love is exactly that... a look at the various types of love we may experience through our lives. Each song has a unique perspective of love as told by the artist. They're beautiful, lyrical, haunting or upbeat, happy or sad, and everything in between.
If you listen to this album with this in mind and you enjoy Windham Hill artists, then you'll enjoy owning Visions of Love. And you will hear Jim throughout. However, if you're looking for another Jim Brickman album full of his own piano and songs, then this won't fill your need.
Not one of his Better works.......2003-03-14
I am a huge fan of Jim Brickman. I have all of his cd's. I had all of them but this one and decided to buy it since I really like his others. I found this cd to be not as good as the others that I own. It seems to have something missing that the others have musically. I had listened to clips of the tracks on amazon and thought "maybe it will grow on me". Right now it is sitting on a shelf not being played. I am not really impressed with this one. I suggest you listen to it on amazon and you make your own decision.
Too much singing, not enough piano playing.......2002-12-29
I don't mind some singing on a Jim Brickman album, I even think that he can do a decent job himself, but all 12 selections having it is too much for me. 12 selections with 12 singers, too many of them even manage to drown out the music- #4 "Still in Love" by Larry Stewart does allow you to hear that piano which is what I want a Brickman album for.
Too Many Friends, Too Little Brickman.......2001-08-07
I quite enjoy Jim Brickman's piano work which generally has a light new age texture to it. But this CD unfortunately has little of his piano playing, no new age flavor, but for me is mostly bland, over mellow pop. I loved the Janis Ian and Partners In Crime, and after hearing them a few times, grew to enjoy Anne Cochran's "After All These Years," Larry Stewart's "Still In Love," Colin Raye & Susan Ashton's "The Gift", Peabo Bryson's "My Heart Belongs to You," and Stephen Bishop's "We Live For Love," but even with two outstanding cuts and five enjoyable ones, this CD just doesn't have enough of what I as a Jim Brickman fan am looking for.
The bottom line is that new age fans and fans of his earlier albums with more solo work are liable to be quite disappointed in this CD. Those who enjoy the particular artists represented will probably enjoy it.
Piano Fan.......2001-02-21
The duet on this CD with Dave Koz called "Partners In Crime" is by far my favorite. I also loved "The Gift" and "That's What I'm Here For", both are fantastic songs. This CD has a wonderful mix of instrumental and vocal compositions, I would definately recommend it to anyone.

Certainly not the best Fleming.......2007-02-02
I do not understand why this disc chooses to record the 'remote' Mozart arias, No. 1.
I do not understand why Ms. Fleming failed to impress listeners as a Mozartian in this disc, No. 2.
A singer of her reputation should be more discerning in her discography.
Not that the rarer or earlier Mozart is any less good than Cosi fan tutte or Don Giovanni.
But if you have listened to recordings of all Mozart's earlier opera (to which I have), you would be bound to admit that Ms. Fleming did not fare well in those pieces she had chosen here. And even in her Donna Elvira on this disc, she is not in best form.
Mozart, Mozart, Mozart!.......2006-05-22
'Visions of Love, Mozart Arias' sung by one of our leading operatic sopranos, Renee Fleming, is a nice listen more for the fact that it is Mozart than the fact that it is being done by Renee Fleming. But then, if you happen to be a Renee Fleming fan, you can have your cake and eat it too.
I confess I have been influenced in my overall rating by one of the other reviewers, who obviously has much more experience with recordings of Mozart arias. But from my point of view, someone who just likes to listen to female operatic and art song vocals, this is a great change from the recordings of French chansoms and German Lieder, which all start to sound like variations of Shubert's 'Ave Maria'.
Here, we get the orchestrations of that all time greatest master of the 18th century opera, the utterly incomparable Wolfgang, for those of us who don't have the patience to sit through, or even do garden weeding through a complete performance of Don Giovanni (although I am partial to complete recordings of Die Zauberflote, The Magic Flute).
This is probably not the best album with which to sample Fleming for the first time. As this is the first of her albums I have reviewed, I'll let you know as soon as I find it.
Meanwhile, if you can get this one at a good discount, you will enjoy the Mozart!
a pleasure.......2003-07-03
Her "turtledovish",creamy, slightly gruffy voice is perfect in Mozart. All are very lovey/dovey romantic songs. I Love the repetive nature of vocal lines in Mozart's music. It's very different from later Italian composers. This music is more charming and sometimes meant to be a little comical. Thay all have a certain rhythm pattern, typical of Mozart. After a while you start to pick up on it and get the gist of the style. Then you can hear an unknown piece and single it out as Mozart. She does an incredible effort at maintaining that creamy richness, roundness, and that beauty of tone that is so necessary in Mozart ,when she is singing at high tessitura or when she is singing in pure head voice or "in the mask". I think Mozart vocal music is the most difficult to do, but also the most fun.

Rare and well-known Mozart.......2003-06-24
Renee Fleming's Mozart CD is a collection of beautiful arias, gorgeously sung. Rare Mozart gems are presented along with more popular arias from FIGARO, DON GIOVANNI, DIE ENTFUHRUNG, and DIE ZAUBERFLOTE -- a wise programming choice on Fleming's part, since EVERYONE sings the popular arias. Fleming's lush yet agile tone is perfect for the long lines of "L'amero, saro costante" from IL RE PASTORE and the similar "Geme la torturelle" from LA FINTA GIARDINIERA. She has the coloratura flexibility for "Ach, ich leibte" from DIE ENTUHURUNG and the amazing "Lievi son," an aria Mozart wrote when he was only sixteen years old! It is also interesting to hear Fleming give an outstanding performance of Donna Elvira's "Mi Tradi," since her more usual role in DON GIOVANNI is Donna Anna. But my favorite track is the first one, "Deh vieni, non tardar" from FIGARO; I believe this is one of the very finest pieces of singing Fleming has ever recorded.

Beautiful album by excellent musicians........2006-03-11
I had not heard of Richard Stoltzman (Clarinet) but this is a generous (66+ minutes)and wonderful CD. The musicians such as guitarist Gene Bertoncini and the English Chamber Orchestra are
excellent. "Sleepless in Seattle" is an upbeat tune and "Out of Africa" is simply beautiful. An excellent variety and treatment of these movie themes. Highly recommended. P.S. - The above
album title shows artist as "Eddie Gomez" - he does play on the album but Mr. Stoltzman is the "headliner."
This CD is My TREASURY!! .......2006-01-08
First tune "The piano" made me get stuck.
And, I was moved to tears.
All the other tunes impress me,too.
This item made Richard Stoltzman to became My Most Favorite Artist of the world.
Now,10years have passed after I boght it.
But it never fades.

Customer Reviews:
brilliant performances, but not quite perfect.......2002-03-22
There is a wealth of great music on this disc, and all at an unbelievable price. The set does not start brilliantly, with a sonata set that sounds as though it has been recorded in his front room. Some of the playing is a bit woolly, but you can tell that his heart is there, especially in the 6th sonata, where the sparks positively fly. For my taste, the 8th starts off way too slow, and the exciting close of the first movement is too fast with way too much pedal, losing all detail. His antipathy towards the 1st sonata is obvious from the sleeve notes, and he plays it rather aggressively.
The sonata recordings come from the beginning of his recording career, and it becomes evident that his control has improved over time. The next disc, entitled `early fame' has an absolutely stonking `suggestion diabolique', the best I have heard on record, and his `toccata' is electric. His `sarcasms' are truly frightening, and the `juvenilia' provide a fascinating insight into the development of Prokofiev's piano music. There is a disc of violin and piano music in this set, and this is good, although I find myself wishing that Pierre Amoyal's tone were not so thin.
The pricing of this set confuses me, in the UK, these discs are available individually at full price, yet I bought the whole set at super budget price, and it is advertised as a super budget set. I was not initially pleased with this set, but I am now so glad that I bought it; it has opened my ears to so much wonderful piano music. I would have liked the inclusion of the fragment of the 10th sonata, though.

This set tells you why Jussi Bjorling is a perennial entrant in the "Tenor of the Century" sweepstakes. Even as the voice darkens from the light lyric to the full, darker instrument of the later recordings, we hear a singer whose elegant style, lovely timbre and innate musicality touch the heart. Many of the selections are sung in Swedish, less of a liability than you might suppose. In whatever language, Bjorling's molten gold flows lavishly. He eschews the sobs and sentimentality that disfigure so much verismo repertory, making his points with stylish vocalism. He's been called a "cool" singer, but try his Puccini and Verdi arias on Disc One and you'll find more than enough vocal and emotional heat. The selections include many neglected Scandinavian songs, sung, like the arias, with a naturalness that disarms criticism. -- Dan Davis
Amazon.com
Swedish tenor Jussi Björling gets many votes for the distinction of greatest all-time tenor. Up to the end, the voice projected a boyish vulnerability, though he also had enough stentorian power to sing the heavy Puccini roles and was ready to take on Lohengrin when he died. He was so deeply musical he eschewed the usual tenor vulgarity without ever slighting the music's theatricality. Even these four well-filled discs of arias and songs can't fully encompass the vocal riches he left behind, but there's a lot here, much of it from his earliest years and (hope you don't mind) sung in a Swedish translation. --David Patrick Stearns
Customer Reviews:
Superb!.......2001-07-29
This is an wonderful compilation of one of the most incredible voices on record. Whether you are a new or old Bjorling fan -- and who could hear that voice and not be enthralled by it -- this is a fine CD to have. The quality of the recording is excellent, and the range in years, from 1930 to 1959, gives a splendid overview of his dazzling talent. In addition to many of the arias one might expect, there are also lieder and songs in Swedish, as well as some charming duets with Jussi's wife, Anna-Lisa. I have quite a few other Bjorling CDs, and this is one of the best in terms of quality and scope. It is a most worthy addition to any Bjorling collection, regardless of its size.
Beatiful singing - but where are the Swedish texts?.......2001-06-22
This is an excellent collection, the best available overview of a great tenor.
This would get 4 stars but has been marked down for only supplying token texts and translations in the large booklet. It is understandable (sort of) that the Italian opera excerpts don't merit texts and translations as (apart from the Callas recitals series) EMI generally doesn't provide texts with historical issues. However the tempting inclusion of a dozen or so texts to the Italian and Swedish songs makes one all the more aware of the miserliness of not providing all the texts.
if you like bjorling this is the best thing you can get!.......2000-06-26
this is so awesome, i love his voice, this is good for anyone, the professional or just someone who wants to hear the greatest tenor of all times! this is so great
The ULTIMATE Collection.......1999-11-02
When starting my Bjorling collection, I saw MANY CDs, with his early recordings. I was in a quandry as to what to buy, UNTIL I found this set. TRULY remarkable in many levels.FIRST and foremost, the voice. Captured in all levels, from the earliest to the latest. Truly wonderful, and the Swedish versions are a real treat to hear, don't worry, the Italian versions are here too!!Secondly, the remastering process. This set was remastered at Abbey Studios in London. For the first time I've heard, they actually pressed NEW 78s from the metal plates, and THEN remastered the new discs!!! Inspired, and the results--incredible.I find myself listening to Disc 3 the most. Very interesting, as it is the Swedish one. When the songs are terrific, along with the "standard" tenor arias, and it all comes together, it is PURE MAGIC!! I will admit that due to time limitations of recordings of this era, the opera house Bjorling is not fully conveyed. There are other CDs for that. Most notably "Romeo and Juliet", and for a REAL thrill, his ATLANTA concert, in STEREO, so much so, that the piano is even divided; left hand left, right hand right. Wait a minute, am I playing TWISTER??:-)) But if you want to skip all those unknown labels, you couldn't have a MORE complete set. ALL wit the great remastering I spoke of. Bjorling--His voice will NEVER die, at least in MY house!!!
Definitive survey of one of the finest singers on record.......1998-09-25
Jussi Bjoerling was one of the greatest singers of the century. His voice is pure, effortless and yet thrilling. Even better than the quality of the voice is his style. He never scoops up to a note nor does he ever whoop down from one, instead, he uses perfect legato and faultless intonation to deliver the cleanest sound you'll ever hear from a tenor.
This collection, from the large set of EMI recordings, provides a wonderful survey of Bjoerling's career. He was a straight 'spinto' tenor, that is, between a lyrical tenor (like Pavarotti) and a dramatic tenor (like Domingo). Most of the Puccini roles demand a spinto and those are the roles that Bjoerling was unbeatable in (particularly Des Grieux in Manon Lescaut). However, I think I most prize this collection for the songs sung in English on the last disc. I had some of them on a cassette I wore out in the car and others on a vinyl disc I wore out at home. For shear beauty of voice, the Berceuse by Jocelyn is stunning. For perfect diction, intonation and style, Love but a Day is breathtaking. Buy this set and I guarantee you'll fall in love with what many think is the finest voice on record.
