Hailing from Tampa, Florida, and wielding as many as three lead guitarists at a time, the Outlaws are perhaps one of the least likely bands to be deemed worthy of a major-label retrospective CD. Though supremely competent, the band is completely indistinguishable in both style and substance from earlier and better known acts of southern rock's golden age: Allman Brothers, Marshall Tucker, Lynyrd Skynyrd. Green Grass & High Tides culls 16 tracks from the five studio albums the Outlaws recorded between 1975 and 1980, including their two minor hits, "There Goes Another Love Song" and "(Ghost) Riders in the Sky." Recommended for southern-rock diehards only. --Roni Sarig

4 out of 5 stars Underrated Southern Rockers -- worth a listen.......2007-05-14

For those of you who aren't old enough to remember, the Outlaws were arguably more popular than Lynyrd Skynrd in the heydey of southern rock (1975 - 1980). Skynyrd's unfortunate demise led to them being canonized, though they certainly had several wonderful songs to justify it.

The Outlaws' first 3 Albums (Self-titled, Lady In Waiting, Hurry Sundown) were amazing LP's and this "Best of" CD captures most of their high notes. Its missing a few great tunes (Holiday from Hurry Sundown immediately comes to mind) but overall is a good survey of their music.

The quality of their music tailed off quickly after Hurry Sundown -- partially due to Henry Paul leaving, but probably due to burnout on several levels. Billy Jones was an amazing guitarist with a unique voice, on par with Neil Young. Its too bad he wasn't with us longer.

These guys were the 'metal band' of the Southern Rock area, so if you enjoy loud guitars and Skynrd-esque music, this CD is for you.

5 out of 5 stars heaven.......2007-02-28

This CD brings back such great memories,..I am almost in a different world when I hear "Green Grass & High Tides". This is some great stuff,..if you are into this kind of southern rock,..you'll love this. I have almost every Outlaws LP record,..but I can't play records in my car,.so I had to get this CD. Not disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars Short on quantity, despite quality that is present........2007-02-14

This CD is loaded with lots of Outlaw favorites. I happen to be one who has always found "Waterhole" and "Knoxville Girl" relatively unappreciated on the grand scale of Outlaw songs, and their presnce on this CD is a must. The same can be said about Outlaw anthems "Green Grass and High Tides; There Goes Another Love Song" and "Freeborn Man." But this collection has gone further in years to dig up other favorites. I was delighted to see "Take It Any Way You Want It; You Are The Show" and "Ghost Riders in the Sky" represented. But perhaps a more up to date collection is in order. Granted, the band see-sawed line-up wise in it's latter years, as did the subsequent music they produced. But "Hurry Sundown" alone is worthy of more representation on this CD. The late 70s saw the remaining bands of both southern rock and the California sound (Eagles/ Poco, etc.) hit their zenith in production and music produced. It's no coincidence to some degree, as "Hurry Sundown's" producer did the same for the Eagle's "Hotel California" resulting in more refined, streamlined music that had crossover appeal. And "Hurry Sundown's" "Holiday; So Afraid" and "Heavenly Blue" each are worthy of being present on a conmprehensive Outlaws collection, as are cuts from future CDs like "Los Hombres Malo" and "In The Eye of the Storm," though they may be fewer in number. But, this is a best of CD. And to accomplish what I feel is necessary, an anthology is in order. The Outlaws may not have ranked up there with the Allmans, the Skynards or the Tuckers in mass appeal. But they did have quite a run for what many consider a not as consequential southern rock band. And their life span is certainly worthy of an anthology to be a more truly comprehensive look at a band that left its mark.

5 out of 5 stars Southern Rock you wouldn't understand, Dr. Bombay !!.......2006-12-27

No New American from India should ever be allowed to review Southern Rock or any Rock CD...I saw the Outlaws and ZZ Top in Roanoke,VA in 1977 and they brought the house down with every song and actually commanded the same applause as that lil' ole band from Texas did later that night !! and outside of a few songs in five albums wrote all of their own material...The Outlaws were truly electric in more ways than one and the new digitally remastered songs sound better than ever !! only real radio stations play the deep cuts and " Ghost Riders in the Sky " fits the bill for high fidelity sound !! Yep , it's a Southern Rock thing , Dr. Bombay ,you wouldn't understand !!!

4 out of 5 stars Good memories.......2006-12-06

I saw the Outlaws live twice in the early eighties and had a great time at both shows. This album is just plain fun to listen to and brings back some very fond memories.

There are plenty of Celtic music compilations out there, but what makes Celtic Tides unusual is its sweeping inclusion of the obvious well-knowns: Clannad, the Chieftains, Altan, Capercaillie--even Scotland's Dougie MacLean and soloist Seamus Egan. In other words, this is a starter kit for sampling the most prominent creators of Celtic music, most of whom were celebrating the heritage before Celtic mania spread throughout the West in the mid-1990s. Certainly other collections feature more traditional, more acoustic Celtic music, but cuts like Old Blind Dogs' "The Birkin Tree" and Clannad's "An Gabhar Bán" satisfy that craving. Dougie Maclean's second cut, "Caledonia," is a smidge on the sentimental side, but this CD's variety is its strongest attraction, at once hushing with a soft lullaby from Mary Black to strutting the hip-hop beats of MacIsaac and Lamond's "Sleepy Maggie." For Celtic lovers already able to pull these artists' CDs from their shelves, this is a yawn; for those dipping toes into Irish Sea waters, a wee gift. --Karen Karleski

4 out of 5 stars Nice mix here........2006-04-21

Like most Putamayo collections, this is a good one. The artists included come from Ireland, Scotland, USA, and Canada and include some well known names including Clannad and the Chieftains. No artists from Galicia in Spain though and there are many fine artists to choose from there who are in this style. Like most other Putamayo CD's , the length here is only so-so- this one clocks in at 53 minutes , which is high for a Putamyao CD. If you go with a Rough Guide CD, you'll get a lot more songs and length. What is here is good Celtic music from a nice mix of artists, though.

5 out of 5 stars Real Celtic Music by Top Musicians.......2005-11-26

It's worth the price, just to hear Mary Black sing "Both Sides the Tweed"! Actually there's not one song by the numerous artists that I would give up. It's a great collection and the list of performers sounds like a Who's Who of celtic music (Altan, Capercaillie, Seamus Egan, Dougie MacLean, Clannad, The Chieftans, The Rankin Family, etc.)
I've not seen the video documentary that this comes from. Obviously I've missed a stellar session. A nifty, informative booklet accompanies the CD.
Highly recommended.

A wonderfull collection of music, and lyrics especially the Irish ones. For a summary of Irish Music, indepth knowledge, or just relaxation this CD is considered a good buy

5 out of 5 stars Celtic Tides.......2004-12-29

This is a great cd! I really love the collection of Celtic songs that Putumayo has gathered. This is music that will transport you to other places, all somewhere in the Celtic world. "An Gabhar Ban" is a particuarly lively song, as is "The Birkin Tree," but all of the songs are pure treasures that you will want to replay many, many times. Celtic Tides is definately worth both your time and money.

What started out as a high school band has turned into a well-oiled heavy metal machine. This CD is proof that five young men from Ohio can enter the professional heavy metal market. Josh Owen, on bass, excels on this CD. The ten songs include Leviathan which is a crowd favorite when performed live. In this genre of music, it's nice to hear the melody. Can't wait to hear what's next for this fresh, young, group!

Album Description

South's 2003 album showcases the band's evolution as musicians and songwriters and introduces a more mature sound. Produced by Dave Eriga (Idlewild, Ash, Manic Street Preachers). Kinetic.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Solid Album, Solid Group, Worth a Listen!.......2007-01-12

'South' is one of those artists that you are either going to like, or dislike. I would not liken it to the extent that 'Boards of Canada' can segregate music listeners, but there are definitely some bits of their music that may make you shy away.

'With The Tides' starts out with a bit of a slow touch and moves onto Tracks 03 and 04, which are quite strong. The albums flows well and is a very enjoyable listen for many occasions. 'Silver Sun' is also a strong track which brings a bit of a 'Beetles' feel to it.

I highly recommend this album for those that like ambient music and indie (hard to use this word with them) with a bit of a post-rock feel.

Favorite Tracks: Track 03, Track 04, Track 06, Track 09

4 out of 5 stars (four and a half stars) Listen and appreciate.......2006-12-27

It's quite difficult to classify South -- perhaps similar in some ways to the shoegazer genre of Ride and Catherine Wheel, or maybe more like the Britpop of the Stone Roses and Charlatans UK. No matter who they're compared to however, one thing's for certain, South is a terrific band, and, to this reviewer, "With the Tides" is even better than their debut "From Here On In," which was very good indeed. Complex textured instrumentation with soaring vocals and choruses -- almost every song on "Tides" is a winner.

The first three songs set the stage for everything that follows and provides the listener with the range of the band. "Colours in Waves," might be my second favorite South song -- just behind "Paint the Silence" from "Here On In." "Natural Disasters," has an almost Beatlesque feel (think a more pop version of "Strawberry Fields Forever"). Like the Beatles, South isn't afraid to experiment with sound not normally associated with a rock and roll. Check out the harp in "Nine Lives," or the harpsichord in "Loosen Your Hold." "Same Old Story" could have been South's break-out song, as it's perhaps more "hit" oriented than the others, but the the essence of the band isn't compromised at all.

Songs 8 through 11 take the listener down gently with a more mellow approach, but the closer, "Threadbare," has a harder edge, almost reminiscent of Radiohead, as if South's telling us not to get too comfortable.

"With the Tides" has no weak songs and is quite incredible in its consistency. I would have awarded the album five stars if "Paint the Silence" was included on it rather than the prior album; but, even without this song, it just misses the top rating in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent from start to finish!.......2006-10-11

I was awe-struck the first time I heard this album. This was my introduction to South, and I was blown away. If you are new to this one, this is a great starting point. The whole disc is a masterpiece.
The best way to listen to this album is on a cool, end of summer night's drive with the windows down, and the sound UP!
Have I mentioned this album is great?? It is! buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant stuff!.......2006-05-09

I'd say With the Tides and Parachutes are my favourite records since OK Computer.
Isn't that enough?

5 out of 5 stars Better than Coldplay, don't miss this record!.......2006-02-25

Heard about South 2 years ago, but didn't purchase this album until a few months ago. Was unimpressed with Coldplay's "X & Y" album, with its rather overpolished feel and sound, and the word across the internet was that South, who many compared to Coldplay, had a better album out. There's an understatement! Lyrically and instrumentally, I found South more expansive, creative and willing to take more chances with the melodies. Simply beautiful to listen to, this album is something I put on and play all the way through - a rarity for me. While the band members are still quite young - and it sometimes shows - the obvious talent they show in this album makes me not just a fan but really looking forward to see what they produce in the future.

5 out of 5 stars a great soundtrack.......2004-10-24

If you love music scores, you definitely should pick up a copy of "Prince of Tides". The music score is excellent, particularly the main theme and the instrumental version of "For All We Know" (very romantic and sexy). This is perfect for weddings and anniversary parties, or for brides to walk down the aisle to. The two bonus songs by Barbara Streisand are great and don't break the flow established by the preceding score since both songs use music from the score, and the lyrics perfectly sum up the themes in the film. Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Tuneful and romantic film score........2003-06-10

I would actually give this lush score three-and-a-half stars. The majority of this soundtrack to Barbra's second film as a director (which was a box office smash, by the way) consists of James Newton Howard's Oscar-nominated score, which is lovely and romantic, if a little too lightweight at times. However, the main attraction to this disc are the two newly recorded vocal tracks by Barbra - both are excellent and neither were used in the film. Barbra takes on the jazz standard "For All We Know" (an instrumental of which is heard in the film), and her lovely take just may be the definitive rendition of the song yet.

Alan and Marilyn Bergman contribute lyrics to Howard's main theme for the soundtrack's other song, and the result is the lovely "Places That Belong To You." Barbra's beautifully restrained performance complements the thoughtful lyrics and wistful melody perfectly, and "Places" easily stands as one of her best understated single recordings. While the two vocal tracks alone make this disc enough for fans, the soundtrack receives such a high rating because the entire album (the score in addition to the two songs) is consistently lush and entertaining.

2 out of 5 stars Too depressing after the movie.......2003-03-08

The music on this CD is fabulous in the movie, which plays out with a different sort of plot than NUTS, yet similarly dramatic. POT, the music enhances the movie's drama without being overbearing. However, on it's own, if you've seen the movie first, or went through the rooting for Barbra to finally find love in real life (POT was produced before she met James Brolin), the music, while including a couple passionate pieces, is too depressing to stand out as a best. Well done, but grabsomething instrumentally funny or you might end up under some heavy violins for a while.Might have felt differently about this one if I didn't see the movie first.

5 out of 5 stars Romance at its best........2001-10-23

This is one of the most moving musical selections I haved ever come across. Being a Barbra fan is what pushed me to buy this soundtrack. It has a wonderful score which is presented in the 1st track "Main Title". The score is then duplicated throughout the album in different keys and tones to create a completly different feeling or emotion. The final track on the album entitled "The Places that Belong to You" is a wonderful vocal by Barbra. In that song they take the score and add lyrics from the point of view of the two main characters of the movie. I, myself, think that the most notable track on the album is "For All We Know" the Barbra Streisand version. It is a jazz/blues remake of the original Bille Holiday version. Barbra soars through it with intense, pure vocals. The last two songs on the album ("The Places that Belong to You" and "For All We Know") are not featured in the movie but were recorded especially for the soundtrack. Anyone who enjoys Barbra music, clasical music, or just the movie will very much enjoy this soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL MUSIC.......2000-08-08

This is one movie sound track I cannot get enough of. James Newton Howard has really done some amazing work here. He has done other soundtracks including "DYING YOUNG" and several others. I can hear his sound and know it is him before I even look at the writer of music. This music sets the mood for relaxing the morning away. As I sit and read on a Sunday morning this has become my favorite music to read to...a perfect way to start a sunday..........I have been listening to this since the day it came out......GREAT

5 out of 5 stars ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY REVIEW.......2002-10-26

The leader of Centro-matic and South San Gabriel delivers his first solo effort after navigating his bands through the release of seven records. Recorded in a barn near his home in Denton, TX - this record offers a somber, sparse, and often fragile batch of songs that are as beautiful as they are sad. Johnson's distinctive voice skillfully goes from athemic wail to broken-down troubadour at the drop of a hat. A timeless and epic record.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2002-04-23

WIll Johnson is the singer/songwriter for the Denton, TX band centro-matic. This guy is a songwriting machine. I saw them open for Tripping Daisy in Little Rock in 1999 and they blew me away. They've released around 6 or 7 cd's in just 4 years! This cd is really beautiful. Also, do yourself a huge favor and buy centro-matic "navigational". In my opinion, it is a masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars soft yet powerful album.......2002-04-10

Will Johnson has crafted a soft yet powerful album that is a perfect soundtrack for a rainy night. It's mostly just him and his guitar but you get bursts of fiddle, weird sampled strings, and warbly keyboard sounds against a backdrop of powerful lyrics. Also check out the other bands he fronts; South San Gabriel and Centro-matic.

1 out of 5 stars Wow, this is crap........2007-07-11

This is one of the worst of the cookie-cutter metalcore bands that surfaced after the explosion of the genre's popularity. Boring and simple riffing, totally predictable song structures, breakdowns thrown in for the hell of it, and horrid vocals both clean and screaming. Everything is lacking. This is even worse than Atreyu in some ways, and that's pretty sad. I mean seriously, metalcore is one of the easiest genres to master, and this is a sad excuse for a metalcore album. If you simply MUST listen to some Metalcore, go for All That Remains, Still Remains, Neaera, Killswitch Engage, Diecast, Anterior, Dead to Fall, or any of the dozens of these types of bands that do it better on all levels.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2005-05-13

This CD gets no respect. Granted Atreyu is sick, but AOR blends melody and screaming like no other. All I have to say is that I have never met anybody who knows who these guys are and it is one of my favorite CDs. Atreyu is blowing up and this is equivolent quality. I guess my point is buy this CD.

4 out of 5 stars 4.......2005-02-02

I would have given this album a full five, if not for the clean vocals. I don't mind clean vocals, Trivium is one of my favorite bands and he sings quite regularly throughout the album. But these vocals, are awfully generic sounding, and only get in the way of the music. Greta album, if you like melody in your metal.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2004-12-31

This is, by far, one of the best albums I have bought with such good music. I reccomend Age of Ruin to any of you who already have an interest in bands from Eulogy (http://www.eulogyrecordings.com/).

5 out of 5 stars Melodic metal at its best!.......2004-11-14

I saw Age of Ruin live, and the show was outstanding! I bought this cd from the band, and have not been disappointed. The guitars blend perfectly with each other and the solos are all quite melodic, and when meshed with the singer's clean screaming and singing vocals and the drummer's double bass drum (done with only one pedal), it makes great music. Yes, that's right. Believe it or not, this metal band actually makes music, a quality not too many of this genre have accomplished. This album is definitely one worth buying.

4 out of 5 stars One of the Greatest EP's Ever ****.......2006-04-03

Most great EPs are put out by the big-boys; Alice in Chains "Jar of Flies," Radiohead "Airbag/How am I Driving," etc. The only unknown band I can think of that's released an EP worthy to be on that level is Cave In. "Tides of Tomorrow" is that EP. I'll admit; first and foremost I am a pop fan. Not a screamo or metal fan, so I'm not an old fan. My first exposure to the group was "Antenna," which is now one of my favorite 25 or so albums of all-time (and I listen to a lot of music). I liked "Antenna" so much that I bought "Jupiter," loved that, and finally found and bought this. I had heard the most popular song on it beforehand, "Dark Driving," so I had high hopes for the rest. It did not disappoint.

"Come Into Your Own" is a great album opener, and catchy throwaway that isn't a throwaway at all. How did these songs not make a regular album? A couple songs like "The Calypso" start off slow, but have a chorus that suck you in. The only song that doesn't rise to the challenge is the title track. With it's faux 1950s tin pan alley pop, it seems to strain to squeeze out any emotion. But the album closes with a great one-two punch "The Callus" and one of the greatest closing tracks since "Would?" closed AIC's "Dirt" in 1992-- "Everest"-- so the one slip-up isn't too upsetting. I hope that now Cave In is returning to Hydra Head Records, it won't mean they are giving up the "American Radiohead" moniker. Well, at least pop fans will still have "Tides of Tomorrow."

Overall: 8 out of 10.

4 out of 5 stars If you like Antenna, check this out!.......2003-07-22

After I fell in love with their Antenna album, I picked up the Tides of Tomorrow EP. If you thought Antenna was great, you'll love this. The first four songs are incredible, and the last 2 are pretty good too. Oh and don't forget to catch them live, they're awesome!

4 out of 5 stars Compared to most bands: Essential. Just not Cave In's best........2003-05-20

While this is indeed an extraordinary EP, it lacks the cohesion of Cave In's full lengths and the songs are a tad more draining, almost as if they were relegated to this EP rather than "Antenna" for a reason. Of course, it IS Cave in, so it still rocks like nobody's business. You've got two of their Failure-esque power ballads, a quasi-stolen Zepplin guitar strum (compare "Everest" and "The Battle of Evermore"), a more melodic Hum ("Calypso), and a breezy, beachfront song that's worth the price of admission by itself (the title song). Yet another adventure in creative rock and roll brought to us by Cave In.

5 out of 5 stars Another great work from Cave In.......2003-03-02

I bought this album at an Isis show a couple weeks before the actual release. I remember seeing it at the Hydrahead table and being so excited. I think that's all I talked about aside from actually seeing Isis for the first time that night. When I got home, I tore open the cd and put it in. Of course, me being obsessed with Cave In and all, I loved the album on the first listen. I was a little confused by the almost tropical feel to Tides of Tomorrow and the Calypso, but once I listened to it more I really grew to love the entire album. Tides of Tomorrow has one of the best guitar solos Cave In has done to date. Everest is a powerful closer, that they claim is a very good take off of The Battle of Evermore by Led Zeppelin. The Giants Chair cover is probably the most rocking song on the album, but it's nice to see Cave In really rock out, b/c they can do it with the best of them. Dark Driving is possibly my favorite song on the album, mainly for the really dark, almost creepy guitar riff that is employed in the chorus. That thing gets stuck in your head and just doesn't leave. This album isn't as good as Jupiter and it sees the band progress more into the focused space rock of bands like Failure, but it's certainly still better than just about anything else out there and of course, it's still a great album.

5 out of 5 stars From the air to sea.......2003-02-28

A mix of Failure and Led Zeppelin, a modern day Pink Floyd-Yes, it's difficult to describe the unique, rocking sound of this Boston quartet, but to their true fans, they are simply known as "Space-Rock". Cave In is the first in what may be the next biggest trend in music. They have been inspiring bands for years, and will continue to do so with their major label on RCA Records (out March 18th) titled Antenna. This cd is another Cave In space rock success. From the rocking title track "Tides of Tomorrow" to the complex "Dark Driving", Cave In demonstrates how easily they can transpire from one musical category to the next. Singer and guitarist Stephen Brodsky leads the band with choruses that inspire, and he soothes your soul at other times with his serene vocals and impressive lyrics. His harmonies can be compared to such legends as the Beatles, Pink Floyd, and Rush-but don't let that fool you. This band is by far not like anything you have heard before. Personal favorites include the rockin' "Come Into Your Own" and "Everest" which both have beautifl choruses. And that's just 2 songs off this AMAZING Space Rock full length that will leave you wanting more!!! Fans of Pink Floyd, Rush, Failure, The Strokes, Foo Fighters, Sparta, Led Zeppelin, and At The Drive In (to name a few) will LOVE this band.

5 out of 5 stars Best TD album in this guitarist's opinion.......2005-11-29

I LOVE this CD by Tangerine Dream. There is so much great guitar work. The acoustic and electric guitar work on Twilight Brigade, the flamenco guitar work on galley slave's horizon and firetongues. Great synth work and keyboard playing as well. This CD rocks, it may seem like smooth jazz in some places, but it is great music. One of my favorite instrumental rock albums period, up there with Steve Vai and Joe Satriani. Jerome Froese and Zlatko Perica did some spectacular work on this CD. There are great guitar solos on nearly every track. Some other Tangerine Dream CDs from this period are Tyranny of Beauty and Rockoon, but this one is by far the best of the bunch. This was a time when Edgar Froese was experimenting with the sound. The previous album Melrose was the first release with son Jerome involved, there was some great guitar work on a couple of tracks but it was predominantly keyboard and sax oriented. In the time between the release of Melrose and Turn of the Tides, Paul Haslinger left the band and "guest musicians" guitarist Zlatko Perica joined the band, along with saxophonist Linda Spa who had played for live shows in the early 90s. This CD is much more guitar oriented than its predecessors, but the keyboards/synth still shine.

Fans of rock music are going to love this CD. Fans of new age might not appreciate this. If you are into guitar music, or music without vocals, this CD is for you. And at Two bucks a pop for a used copy, what are you watiing for?

The only thing that could make this CD better would be the use of an actual drum kit and not the drum machine.

Other TD releases you may like: Rockoon, Tyranny of Beauty, Atlantic Bridges, Atlantic Walls.

5 out of 5 stars Tides & Tyranny.......2003-09-12

I like this one a lot. I used to listen to it driving to and from work several times a week. This one or Tyranny of Beauty. Have not listened much since both carried me round trip from Dallas, Texas to Kalispel, Montana via Garden of The Gods where this music belongs. TD can be wonderful in a listening room, but carries the day when the land looms large. Pick your spots.

2 out of 5 stars Week-old reheated dinner.......2002-01-18

Recorded in December 1993 / January 1994, "Turn of the Tides" is a sibling recording to the previous studio album, "Rockoon". It shows some improvement over that release, if only because father and son felt more in tune with each other, and with their new genre of music. This said, I would be insincere if I said that "Turn of the Tides" offers anything new. Froese family just continued composing tracks in the same vein as they did on "Rockoon", only slightly better performed. Be it as it may, the progress was stalled.

The album opens with 'Pictures at an Exhibition', a cover of Modest Mussorgsky's timeless classic. Executed very well, yes, this track has nothing to do with the rest of the album. What was the reason for its inclusion other than that of showing off that Jerome can replay Mussorgsky on synthesizers? As a pupil in musical school on an examination, he replayed it errror-free, but without imagination. The same composition was once included in Emerson, Lake and Palmer's programme back in 1971. ELP was a progressive band whose music even if difficult, was completely new and unique. No one played like them. And when they performed 'Pictures at an Exhibition', you felt your blood circulate faster in your veins. That was something. Froese adaptation leaves you lukewarm at most.

The next track, 'Firetongues', is the best one on the album. Quite sophisticated - it at least offers something new. At last. Spanish and electric guitars played by a guest musician, Zlatko Perica accompany many changes of mood during the track's over 6 minutes. The composition is very good. It's a pity that the band copied this track to several of their future albums, replayed it over and over again, remixing, mixing and messing with the idea. After ten years of listening to 'Firetongues' in several forms, I am tired to death.

'Galley Slave's Horizon' is a boiled-again version of 'Firetongues', with a beautiful pearl of a melody built in. Indeed, it would be sufficient to do away with the track's 7 minutes of repetitive bim-bam-bom, and make the track three times shorter, with the pearl exposed for us to admire. Much in the vein of the pop bands of the 1980s, 'Galley Slave's Horizon's main theme is incredibly touching. If you would like to listen to more of this type of music, consider the albums of Kombi and Foreigner.

After that, the album enters shallow waters. Incredibly boring 'Death of a Nightingale', 'Twilight Brigade', and 'Jungle Journey' stretch for over twenty minutes. All of these tracks were subjected to mangling in future years. Once you delve deeper into their output of the 90s, you will realize, to your horror, that "Turn of the Tides", a not-bad album on its own, was copied and muted again and again and again. Enough already! We have 2002 and I will not tolerate any remanglings of "Turn of the Tides". Not any more.

The album ends with two long tracks of much lighter texture. One of them is nicely entitled, 'Midwinter Night', however that's all good I can say about this heartless kitsch of a song. The last one, 'Turn of the Tides', begins with polka drumming, to deliver a happy-go-merry tune known from "Lily on the Beach". Lord have mercy.

4 out of 5 stars Tired of the comparisons to the "old TD".......2001-01-31

I am really tired of reading reviews that lament how "awesome" the previous incarnations of TD were compared to the current TD. Old TD? Try 11 minutes of animal noises played over a looping synth crawl. Perhaps cutting edge in 1973 but it's great to know that they aren't still turning out stuff that sounds like they're trying to stay rooted in the early 70's. In my book, it's acceptable for any musician or group to explore different areas, even if these areas aren't considered cutting edge or faithful to previous directions.

I have listened to Turn of the Tides many times over the past 6 years -- it hasn't exactly improved with age, but it also hasn't lost any of the beauty I heard when I first enjoyed it.

"Galley Slave's Horizon" is my favorite track -- I enjoy the tension in it -- moving from sudden leaps and quick rythms to nearly silent pauses as though suspended in flight.

I don't care for the "story" accompanying the concept -- just didn't add anythign to my experience of the music. Otherwise, Turn of the Tides remains one of those CDs I can count on to provide an hour or two of pleasure -- reason enough for me to recommend it.

2 out of 5 stars Save your money........2000-11-28

I have to agree with those who find this work to be, shall we say, "lacking."

My Stars go to Fire Tongues; the rest I could do without and in fact feel foolish that I ever paid to hear them. It's a very monotonous collection, and that's about all I can say of it. When people talk about the "drought" Tangerine Dream had during the mid 90's, this is the kind of work they're talking about.
