Yolanda and Enrique offer us this true Latin American musical embrace. Although I knew of Enrique Coria's masterful guitar style, this lyrical duo with Yolanda Aranda really exceeded everything I expected. The trained voice of Yolanda takes us through zambas and huapangos with passion and subtleties. My favorite tunes are La Malagüeña (where Yolanda shows the real pitch of her voice) and La Canción Mixteca. Chava Flores' Mi México de Ayer is also really moving. In La Pucha con el Hombre (a great escondido in the tradition of Los Carabajal), Yolanda may not compete with my paisana Mercedes Sosa, yet her voice really shines. In summary, this is one of the best Latin American musical partnerships I heard in the last years: an homage to the everlasting Latin American musical tradition.

What a treat this is. Weingarten is perhaps best known for his skills on the dobro (acoustic slide guitar played on the lap), he has a startling depth to his musical vision as well. The entire album feels like a mysterious and supernatural story being told (without words). It's moody, engaging, and well-balanced. It's atmospheric, melodic, and percussive. It's as much electric as it is acoustic. Djam Karet fans will know Weingarten's name from their "Collaborator" album, and will find "The Acoustic Shadow" is equally as well done. Kit Watkins guests on three tracks, including the cerebral title track. Weingarten's performance goes way beyond the dobro here, into sequencing, tape effects, electric guitars, synths, and even vibes. Deep, emotional, varied, and passionate. Highly recommended, and surely one of the ten best releases that will be heard this year.

Of all the Galli-Curci CD reissues, I put this one first. Romophone seems to have reissued her complete recorded output, in superb Ward Marston productions, but this set, comprising her 1916-1920 recordings, shows her best qualities. Don't be deterred by the early dates. Galli-Curci's voice was recorded by the acoustic process more successfully than almost any other singer of her era. She continued making records until 1930 but by then her glory days had passed.

On one day in 1917 she made three recordings, two of which are her greatest. They are the arias from "Il Barbiere di Siviglia" (Track 16) and "La Sonnambula" (Track 18). Also included in this reissue is her participation in the "Rigoletto" Quartet and the "Lucia di Lammermoor" Sextet (two takes) with an ensemble including Caruso, with whom she sang only two performances in stage, and several duets with the baritone Giuseppe de Luca, a frequent partner at the Met.

So what are "her best qualities", referred to above, and do they merit the considerable outlay necessary to buy this 2 CD set? Vocal agility is the most remarkable. A bird-like trill is executed beautifully and easily, in both an upper and lower register. All sounds fall easily on the ear. Galli-Curci was one of the great gramophone coloraturas. Here are 43 of her recordings, cleanly and faultlessly projected, available at merely a fraction of their original purchase price.

        No problems with the music on this album but, geez, the song titles are different on the CD booklet and on the back of the case. What's "De Blues?" Well, it's "De Kalb Blues," but someone was too lazy to listen to the song. How about "Borrow Love And Go?" It's actually "Bottle Up And Go," at least the way Leadbelly and countless others have sung it. Anyway, ignore the shoddy packaging, and enjoy this inconsistent but listenable Leadbelly tidbit.
