Loved it........2005-11-08
Wow, I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed this album. I had heard of doubleDrive when I bought their most recent album "Blue In The Face". I really loved that album a lot and it was worth the trip I took to purchase it. If you already have the new one and loved it, trust me, you need to get this cd right away before they disappear. Personally, I think the new one is just a bit better than "1000 yard stare" but it's still amazing. I cannot begin to tell you how good the cd really was. The whole cd is just plain well put togather and sounds good. Even the hidden track is cool. Here are my ratings of each track out of 10.
1. Belief System 10/10
2. Dressed In Light 10/10
3. 1000 yard stare 10/10
4. Hell 9.5/10
5. Smaller 6.5/10
6. Vamp 10/10
7. Sacrifice 9/10
8. Gone 10/10
9. Tattooed Bruise 9.5/10
10. Reason 9/10
11. Stand By 8.5/10
87. Mexican Radio(Hidden) 9/10
Overall: 92% A-
All in all its a excellent Cd and worth listening too. It will keep you interested all the way through. If you want I would rather recommend you get their most recent "Blue In The Face" as well because it's even better, if you can believe it!
It Just Plain Rocks!!!.......2005-06-10
I bought this CD on the strength of the song "1000 Yard Stare". If you like that song you will
love this album! The entire CD is very much in the same vein as that song. It just plain rocks!!
Great hard rock melodies, choruses, and vocals. If 1000 Yard Stare had been released in 2004/05
instead of 1999 I think it would have been much bigger. With bands like Crossfade, Shinedown,
Breaking Benjamin and Chevelle making hard rock more popular, this album would fit right into
that melodic hard rock genre.
Catchy, unique rock with cool and crazy bonus track.......2004-04-11
Like their sound , Doubledrive is a unique band in the genre of rock, which is a good thing, a fresh sounding band that blends new sounds with classic style rock. I like this album. I espically liked the cool track 87 song mexican radio. Its crazy in a cool way. at first i thought it was corny but it grew on me real fast. Hats off to a good new rock band. Hope to one day see you in concert
"doubleDrive Keeps The Show Alive".......2003-09-10

This Album [Is Great]!!!! (It's as simple as that).......2003-07-15
If you don't have this album in your CD collection then you don't have a CD collection. I first bought this disc in 2000. I even went to bat with the program director for a local rock station (I played softball with him and that helped) to get Doubledrive on their program list. The first time the disc hit my ears I new the band was different. BELIEF SYSTEM was catchy, fresh and had some of the best guitar riffs I have heard in ages. Just when I thought that was it, DRESSED IN LIGHT started and totally captivated me. And from there the band never let up. It was track after track of FRESH rock. It felt like the first time I bought Lick It Up by Kiss. The album was awesome from start to finish. Other key tracks I enjoyed were 1,000 YARD STARE, HELL, VAMP and REASON. It was so tough to single out any favorites cause the whole CD is that good. The most pleasant surprise came on like track 87 (hidden track) which I found a remake of Wall Of Vodoo's "Mexican Radio". It was one of my favorites in high school, but Doubledrive takes it and makes it their own. This song is 100% kickass as is this CD. I am looking forward to picking up the band's newest effort BLUE IN THE FACE. In my book this disc has been put off too long. It's too bad the band's old record lable didn't give 1,000 Yard Stare more of the push it deserved. This rates right up there with Gun's & Roses debut disc. Doubledrive are without a doubt one of the most underated rock bands of the present. They are very talented and I am sure will prove their worth and secure a spot in rock history. So if you are even thinking about buying this disc, [do it]!!! Your loss if you don't!!!

A(lfano) to Z(andonai). Great Olivero--terrible sound.......2004-10-14
Source: This appears to be an RAI broadcast from Turin dating from October 22, 1971, coupled with hefty chunks of a "Francesca da Rimini" from Milan, June 4, 1959.
Sound: The sad news -- for a recording made in 1971, this is a disgrace. Even considering that it is taken from a live performance, it is still a disgrace. "Risurrezione" sounds as though it were recorded from a clapped-out AM radio for a second-rate eight-track machine. The live audience is well-disciplined and scatters only a few coughs. "Francesco da Rimini" is slightly better recorded--very slightly better. Whoever recorded F da R contrived the extraordinary feat of making Mario del Monaco's foghorn voice sound small and tentative.
Format: Disc 1, Acts I, II and III, 25 tracks, 67m:36s. Disc 2, Act III (conclusion) and Act IV, 18 tracks, plus "Francesca da Rimini," 7 tracks, 66m:38s.
Documentation: No libretto. Summary of the plot is confined to a single paragraph. Brief verbal sketches are provided for Alfano, the opera and Magda Olivero. The track lists identifies the characters who are singing and shows timings.
A single hearing of "Risurrezione" is sufficient to establish that Franco Alfano had the verismo style down cold. The opera is absolutely at home with "Cavalleria Rusticana," "Pagliacci," "Andrea Chenier" and "Tosca." But it is just a little late, just behind the crest of the verismo wave, so to speak. Alfano was a fine craftsman with every tool in the verismo kit, lacking only the ability to craft a hit tune.
"Risurrezione" is based on Tolstoy's 1900 novel, "Resurrection." Despite that blue-blooded literary ancestry, Alfano's version is chock-full of good, low-down, Italianate emotion. For once, Alfano managed to avoid the weak endings that plague "Turandot" and "Cyrano." The opera ends with full-throttle exchanges between the tenor and the soprano that surely would work up any audience.
The unquestioned star of this recording is that prima donna assoluta, Magda Olivero. Would that she were better recorded! Poor as the recording quality is, the youthful Olivero (she was only about sixty at the time) sounds wonderful.
The tenor, Giuseppe Gismondo was a real surprise to me. He sings with a big, powerful, dark voice. As far as I can gather, he sang extensively with the second-tier opera companies in the US during the 1960s. Why he is not better known puzzles me.
Disc 2 is filled out with about twenty minutes of duets from "Francesca da Rimini," featuring Olivero and del Monaco. Olivero, naturally, is terrific. Del Monaco was probably singing quite well, too, but the recording is singularly unflattering to his big voice.
This is a hard one to call. The opera is pretty good. Olivero is always a treat and Gismondo is a pleasing surprise. But the sound is truly wretched--three stars.
Too bad.
****
A Follow-up Note--September 2005.
This performance is available from Opera d'Oro in markedly better sound, although without the Zandonai excerpts.
Alfano's big hit..........2003-08-17
"Risurrezione" was a work of Alfano's youth. He was but 29 when the work premiered in 1904. It was a hit, and was soon being performed at opera houses around the world, becoming a staple of Mary Garden's repertoire in Paris and Chicago, and reaching it's 1000th Italian performance in 1951. "Risurrezione" contains only hints of the complex, impressionist style of Alfano's maturity. It is flooded with the style of Alfano's idol Puccini, though Tolstoy's story has a more spiritual angle to it than Puccini's operas tend to have.
The structure of the opera is splendidly balanced and concise, with offstage choruses, symphonic interludes, and beautiful arias aplenty. The arias deserve special recognition. The famous "Dio Pietoso", a favorite of Garden's, is beautiful and emotional, but it's the love music, along with the two arias sung by the male characters that impressed me the most. Dimitri's "Piangi, si, piangi", and Simonson's third act aria are both filled with not only beauty, but an earnest dignity, that can't help but move the heart.
The character of Katiusha was a great favorite of many verismo sopranos, because there's such a variety of characters in the one. In the first act, she's a naive girl, in the second a disallusioned outcast. By act III, she's become a degraded, souless prisoner, hard drinking and chain smoking. But in the final act she's had a rebirth...the "Resurrection" of the title, and is strong enough to choose service to humanity over marrying the prince of her dreams, heart breaking as it is for her, and for us.
This performance showcases an array of splendid singers--first and formost the legendary Magda Olivero, who was no spring chicken when this recording was made in 1971. But it was never sheer vocal beauty that set her apart, but rather her amazing dramatic instincts, which are always dead on. The Simonson is also really great. There's recently been a new recording of "Risurrezione" released on the Accord label, and available from Amazon's British sister site. It has the advantage of fat modern sound, which far better showcases Alfano's splendid orchestration. It also has a booklet with complete notes and libretto with translation, which this release lacks. But the singers suffer by comparison. Denia Mazzola has a more beautiful voice, but can't compare with Olivero in interpretation, and the new Simonson lacks the power and dignity of the one on the Gala set. My recommendation--buy both.
Now let's see recordings of other Alfano operas..."L'ombra di Don Giovanni", "Madonna Imperia", "Il Dottor Antonio", etc., etc. Even a modern recording of "Sakuntala" would be a blessing!

Great promise then they faded.......2005-01-06
It seems like so many early 90s British bands grabbed a brief moment of glory then faded into the sunset. Although the Yardies released another album, it never lived up to expectations and they too were shown to the revolving door.
More like a collection of popular EPs, "Hands On" has some great tunes. Things get moving fast with "0-0 A.E.T." a melodic jangle of a tune. "Comeuppance" is terrific too. My favorite is definitely "Buttermouth" a glorious mix of drums and guitars.
If you like good music and want a break from the "Manchester" sounds, give the Yardies a listen.
Melodic pop-rock from the early nineties.......2004-01-06
This 1992 debut album from Thousand Yard Stare contains the best tracks from their earlier extended play singles like Comeuppance, Weatherwatching and Seasonstream. The music is a delightful blend of jangling guitars, catchy riffs and lovely melodies. Although firmly rooted in rock, their melodic songs have a strong pop appeal that makes them stick in the mind.
The closest comparisons in my opinion are the UK group James and early Tom Petty, although Thousand Yard Stare's overall sound is lighter and more bouncy than the latter. My favourite songs include the tuneful opening number O.0 a.e.t., Seasonstream with its rousing guitars, Nonplussed with its great harmonies and impressive guitar textures, Last Up First To Go with its nervous early nineties beat and Buttermouth with its hypnotic guitar lines.
Judging by the quality of the sound and the material on this album, I am surprised that Thousand Yard Stare did not achieve greater success. Hands On is a charming collection of tuneful pop-rock songs that linger in the mind long after the last notes have died down. It's more than ten years later but I'm pleased to have discovered this album.

Stare at this.......2005-06-18
Los Angeles indierock band Marjorie Fair will make their long-awaited domestic debut in July, after being only available as an import. But listeners can find out about their sound in the single for "Stare," one of the songs from "Self Help Serenade."
The title truck is a dark, brooding song, with Marjorie Fair's typical swirling guitars and anguished, lonely lyrics, sometimes sung in a detached robot voice. "I can never change/cause the pain just makes me want to stare/at the same things I saw before/thinking there's something more/god it's a lonely place!"
After that, there is another song from the full-length album, "How Can You Laugh?" It's a slower, sadder ballad that sadly asks a lover "how can you laugh?" Following it up are two extra songs: the quirky, blippy ballad "Science of Your Mind," and the pleasant if unexceptional trip-pop ballad "Timmy."
Marjorie Fair is one of those bands who may well take the world by storm, if the world just listens to their music. And the "Stare" EP is a good way to get to know their music -- it's soft, emotionally charged, and has a sound of brooding delicacy that rock music could use more of.
Evan Slamka's songwriting adds to that melancholy sound, whether he's murmuring over an undulating synth line, or recoiling with the hurt of an insensitive lover. And while his songwriting can be slightly repetitive -- see "How Can You Laugh?" -- it's always delivered with a heartfelt echo of pain.
In the weeks before "Self Help Serenade" gets a domestic release, listeners should check out Marjorie Fair's sound in the "Stare" EP, for a rich rock'n'roll sound with an eerie edge.

I first found out about this band surfing the web and I got more and more interested into this band. They are a very good melodic death metal band. I highly recommend ordering this album even though it is not avaiable through Amazon. If you like Arch Enemy, Children of Bodom, Amon Amarth, (just a few names), this is a definate buy!

half-broken music box from outer space.......2007-06-16
With warbling synths and drums that somehow skip beats and hit extra ones, but without messing with the rhythm, Freescha's new album sounds like tunes from a half-functioning outer-space music box that astronauts have recovered, which originally captured listeners in a trance so powerful they couldn't escape and their civilization crumbled. Or something like that.
Highly recommended for those who want ambient music with a beat, but something out of the ordinary, hackneyed vein of lounge-y tunes. I still prefer Freescha's "What's Come Inside of You" (2003), which is one of my all-time favorite electronic albums. "Come Inside" has memorable songs, whereas on "Head Warlock," the tracks all blur together.
A psychedelic soundtrack of blissed out porportions........2006-10-26
This plays like a lost water logged 8 track soundtrack to a 70's sci-fi movie that has been warped, mangled, processed through filters and then slowed down and sped up with random beats skipping out of time. That's not a bad thing. It takes awhile to grow on you but when it does, it's some of the most dreamy, ethereal, haunting and danceable music to grace your ears. If you're a fan of Freescha or if you loved Whats Come Inside You, don't hesitate to rush out now and buy this disc. It's a bit darker than WCIY at first listen and the pornographic moans and groans of WCIY are (thankfully) gone but Freescha still manages to give us what we expect from them.
Head Warlock Double Stare does indeed play like a soundtrack, even the inside CD casing looks like a movie poster. It has an image of an A Clockwork Orange looking guy tearing through the paper with the caption "Creaming is just the beginning . . ." underneath, whatever that means, and the liner notes are setup like the credit information you would see at the bottom of a movie poster. As with a soundtrack, some songs are disappointingly short like the dreamy goosebump inducing 43 seconds long Secret Admirer. It's as if someone gave you a delicious ice cream cone and then yanked it away after your first lick. However, where that song disappoints in its length others are fulfilling and hits the spot. Galacticus grooves along with gorgeous melodies, a fat warped beat and indiscernible background vocals. Humping For Dummies has heavy dance beats and Freescha's trademark ambiguous vocoder vocals. And is he saying "You are so down for me ... you are so cool ... you got the moves baby ... I got the tools"? Who knows, but its great stuff. Moving has a similar feel to Boogy Foot from Slower Than Church Music, starts off slow and mellow and then BAM! a great crunchy beat kicks in that's so random and unexpected but totally cool. Shiver Me Timbers crunches and squishes along with an eerily beautiful melody. The things these guys do with manipulating sound is amazing. Each track on Head Warlock Double Stare flows beautifully and flawlessly into the next creating a conceptually cohesive listen from beginning to end
If you're new to Freescha and don't know what I'm referring to then shame on you! You need to get out and buy some Freescha now. They are one the most consistently brilliant, talented hidden gems of electronica. Don't fall for the Boards of Canada comparisons though. With the exception of the Lift EP, their first release, nothing else of theirs sounds remotely like BoC. However, their music is totally blissed out and has the ability to evoke weird and lost childhood memories like BoC but the comparisons should end there. Freescha stand on their own.
If you are a Freescha fan, Head Warlock Double Stare will have you pulling out your other Freescha discs and having a Freescha-fest. This by far is the best release I have bought all year.

After 10 years, still one of my favorites.......2002-07-19
This has been consistently one of my favorite albums for a decade now. I'd describe the music as Metallica (circa Master of Puppets) crossed with Pink Floyd and pumped through a piano. And I do mean pumped -- there is some really intense piano-playing here. (As an aside, to actually see Michael Halaas play is an experience in itself.) I bought several more of his albums after this, but none of them felt as solid and natural. This is music that seems to come out of nowhere, it has a shape and sound all its own and (for me at least) it just works.
timeless.......1999-12-12
I've had this CD for 3 years and I still listen to it regularly. Since no one has posted any reviews, I thought I'd add my $.02. I would hate to draw a direct comparison to George Winston, because this is very different from that, yet invokes similar emotions. Perhaps a bit darker. I am not a musician so I can't comment on the playing. But this CD moves me. I don't just listen to it, I feel it. Even after what must be hundreds of listenings.

Album Description
Startlingly raw, the songs on "brokenworld" stare down the barrel of smoking subjects as the power dynamics of a love affair, the brutal beating that led to the death of Private Barry Winchell, and the events of September 11th. The music here is stressed at the hinges: the guitar explosive one minute, demure the next, the voice reaching for the edge be it high or low. Music we like to call Folk-Monk (as in Thelonius Monk). This is living art.
